Severed Ties
The intricately carved oak doors of the top-floor suite loomed ahead, shadowed by the bleeding crimson and indigo light of dusk.
Valera paused on the expensive runner rug, her knuckles brushing against her thighs to ground herself in the texture of her weathered combat trousers. This sprawling office used to be a command center where they mapped out pack survival. Tonight, it reeked of an impending tribunal.
She rapped her knuckles against the wood.
"Enter," Kaelen called out.
Valera turned the brass handle and stepped inside.
The massive room felt suffocatingly thick, heavy with bruised egos, forced authority, and an unspoken, arrogant judgment. Kaelen sat rigidly behind his massive mahogany desk, his posture screaming a desperate need for control. Beta Torin flanked his right, his hand hovering dangerously close to the hilt of his weapon. Gamma Jarek lingered near the far wall, his eyes narrowed in deep suspicion. Beside the Alpha’s chair stood Luna Lorelai, looking down her nose with an air of untouchable, sneering arrogance.
They were projecting a united, highly intimidating front designed to crush dissent.
Valera stood dead center in the middle of the plush rug, her spine as straight as a forged steel blade. She did not lower her cold gaze. She absolutely did not bare her neck in the required display of submission.
"Alpha," she said, her voice entirely flat. "You sent for me."
Kaelen gave a stiff, formal nod. "Take a seat. We have to address your status on the defensive line."
Valera remained firmly rooted to the floor.
"With respect, Kaelen," she replied coolly, deliberately dropping his title. "There is no status to discuss. I handed in my resignation this morning."
Kaelen’s jaw clamped tight, his hands flattening against the desk. "I am aware of what you attempted. And I explicitly refused to accept it."
"My departure wasn't a gentle suggestion for you to ponder." A cold, humorless smirk touched her mouth. "I am finished here."
"You are the most lethal asset we possess on the front lines," Kaelen argued, adopting a condescending tone as if reprimanding a disobedient child. "The newest recruits rely on you. You represent absolute endurance to them."
"And what exactly did that endurance earn me?" Valera asked, her voice dropping to a freezing register that easily sliced through the massive room. "Complete betrayal by the people I bled for."
"Nobody betrayed you, Valera," Kaelen insisted, raising his voice to command the space.
She let out a single, sharp exhale that mirrored a hollow laugh. "That takes nerve to say aloud."
The heavy accusation hung in the dead air. He had been the architect of her very first rejection. The moment she turned eighteen without a wolf, he had discarded her worth instantly, treating her like a defective burden.
"I forged myself into your best fighter because you left me zero alternatives," Valera said, taking a deliberate step forward. "You declared me a broken human. A liability. So I trained until my joints gave out. I fought barehanded against things that should have torn me apart."
She flexed her scarred hands. "I did it to protect this territory. But mostly, I did it to keep my family breathing."
"If it were just me," she added, her tone utterly detached, "I would have walked off this land five years ago."
The absolute silence in the office was deafening.
"Now," Valera continued, sweeping her cold, final gaze across the four leaders, "I have absolutely nothing keeping me here. The only two people who mattered are dead. So you can drop the illusion that I care whether you authorize my exit."
Luna Lorelai scoffed loudly from the window. "Your arrogance is absolutely staggering."
Valera shifted her attention, locking onto the aristocratic woman. "Was I addressing you?"
Lorelai’s lips curled into a vicious sneer.
Beta Torin stepped aggressively forward, his boots thudding against the floorboards. "Alpha, an insubordinate fighter is a massive danger to the ranks, regardless of their skill. I strongly suggest you let her go."
"Your Beta is right," Valera agreed smoothly. "But my resigning is not a negotiation. It is an absolute ultimatum. You will either officially recognize my resignation right now... or you will formally exile me."
A restless shift rippled through the armed enforcers.
"Because I swear to the Goddess," Valera promised, her voice laced with heavy iron, "I will never shed another drop of blood for cowards who set up their own people."
"I will not tolerate these baseless accusations!" Kaelen barked, his face flushing with panic as he attempted to deflect. "There was no setup!"
"Then explain the logistics to me," Valera countered, closing the distance to his mahogany desk. She planted her palms flat on the polished wood. "Why were my parents the only two people left entirely exposed outside the reinforced bunker?"
The enforcers exchanged uneasy glances, but no one spoke.
"Why just them?" she pressed aggressively. "When I hit the tree line to intercept the ambush, command told me the civilian evacuation was complete. They said everyone was secured."
She stared down the blustering Alpha. "I focused on the perimeter. I broke necks and took claws to the ribs. And then I heard my parents screaming for me through the mind link."
"I had blocked out every channel except command because I trusted you," Valera said, her voice turning razor-sharp. "I believed they were safe inside. Do you have the slightest concept of what that realization felt like?"
Gamma Jarek shifted his weight, refusing to meet her gaze. "We honestly do not know why they failed to make it inside, Valera. The Luna reported they never arrived when the sirens sounded."
Valera’s head snapped toward him. "You actually buy that? My parents never broke a single rule in their miserable lives. A low-tier guard and a kitchen worker. They lived and breathed pack compliance."
She pushed off the desk, standing perfectly straight.
"I will not lift a finger for this territory until the person responsible is held accountable," Valera stated.
"How are we supposed to charge someone with treason without a shred of concrete, physical evidence?" Kaelen demanded defensively.
Valera’s cold, entirely dead gaze slid smoothly past the Alpha and locked directly onto Lorelai.
"You put your mate in absolute, unquestioned control of the civilian evacuation," Valera noted. "It was her explicit duty to secure the perimeter and account for every single pack member."
Lorelai stiffened, her aristocratic posture turning completely rigid.
"Are you attempting to blame me for this?" the Luna hissed.
"Yes," Valera answered instantly.
The suffocating tension in the massive room cranked to an explosive level.
"If it wasn't a deliberate act of treason," Valera said, her words slicing through the heated air like a highly serrated blade, "then it was your profound, inexcusable, and pathetic incompetence that got my parents brutally killed."
Lorelai completely lost her mind. Pure, unadulterated rage twisted her beautiful features into a mask of feral, monstrous ugliness. Sharp claws erupted from her manicured fingertips with a vicious, guttural snarl.
"Luna," Valera said, completely unfazed by the display. "Are you seriously going to try this?"
Valera didn't yield an inch. "You have zero genetic hold over me. Which means..."
She met the woman’s furious glare. "I am allowed to strike back."
The air cracked with impending violence. Valera finally stopped asking for basic respect. She was daring them to try and force it out of her.
Lorelai unleashed the full, crushing weight of her Luna aura, projecting an overwhelming psychic pressure intended to force the lower-ranked warrior to her knees in agonizing, paralyzing submission. It was a genetic command designed to crush windpipes and snap wills. Kaelen deliberately remained silent, maliciously allowing his mate to physically discipline the insubordinate fighter.
But Valera did not drop to the hardwood floor in gasping agony. She did not even blink.
Instead, something immense, ancient, and terrifyingly powerful uncoiled in the absolute deepest chambers of her chest.
*So... this is what passes for dominance these days?* a voice echoed through the sprawling architecture of her mind.
Valera took a slow, measured breath. *Aethra.*
The long-dormant wolf did not snap or snarl. She simply awakened in the absolute forefront of Valera's mind, projecting a presence so incredibly vast and calm that Lorelai’s aggressive aura felt like a pathetic, unnoticeable breeze against a solid stone mountain.
*I am fully awake,* her ancient wolf murmured, calm and infinitely dangerous. *But this physical altercation belongs to you.*
"You dare accuse me and threaten defiance in my own territory?" Lorelai shrieked.
"You were never my Luna," Valera replied evenly.
Lorelai lunged forward.
The room erupted into sheer chaos. The physical attack was incredibly fast, fueled by wild, untamed fury. But Valera had spent years surviving at the very bottom of the food chain, fighting strictly as a human. Her combat geometry was mathematically precise.
As the Luna’s claws swiped brutally toward her face, Valera fluidly and effortlessly slipped off the centerline. The clumsy, rage-fueled strike carved through empty air.
Valera stepped aggressively inside the Luna’s wide guard. She drove a devastating, bone-jarring palm strike directly into Lorelai’s elbow joint, instantly neutralizing the attacking arm with a loud, sickening pop.
Before the Luna could process the pain, Valera swept her heavy combat boot behind Lorelai’s supporting leg, tearing her foundation out from under her.
Valera used the woman's own aggressive momentum entirely against her, grabbing Lorelai by her expensive tunic and violently slamming her into the heavy wooden paneling of the office wall.
The expensive wood cracked under the sheer force of the impact.
Valera pressed her reinforced forearm ruthlessly against the Luna’s fragile throat. The iron-clad grip pinned the genetically superior, untouchable female securely in place, rendering her entirely helpless in less than three seconds.
Lorelai gasped for air, her wide, terrified eyes staring up at the warrior as she clawed weakly at Valera's arm.
*Her stance was entirely unbalanced,* Aethra noted dismissively in her mind. *End this.*
"You had one job," Valera told the struggling woman, her voice lacking any trace of heat. "You were supposed to check the manifest. You were supposed to protect my parents."
Tears of genuine terror spilled over Lorelai’s cheeks. "I didn't—I wasn't trying—"
"Your intentions do not resurrect the dead," Valera cut her off.
She released the pressure and tossed the Luna aside like a piece of worthless, discarded trash. Lorelai collapsed to the floor, coughing violently.
The silence that slammed into the office was absolute.
Beta Torin and Gamma Jarek were perfectly frozen in sheer disbelief. Their hands remained locked on their weapons, completely paralyzed by the impossible reality of an unranked human dismantling a fully shifted Luna's aura without shifting.
Alpha Kaelen pushed himself up shakily from his desk. His unquestioned authority was irreparably and publicly fractured. He stared at the warrior he had spent years dismissing, his face pale with a terrifying mixture of awe and dawning terror.
"What exactly are you?" he asked, his voice breathless.
Valera turned to face him. The subtle, unnatural resonance of two overlapping vocal cords bled into her tone—her human voice unified perfectly with Aethra’s guttural, ancient pitch.
"I am exactly what you rejected," Valera answered evenly. "Because I did not have a wolf you could easily control and break."
She took a slow, predatory step closer to the desk.
"I survived by tearing my own muscles and breaking my own bones," Valera stated. "I became the strongest fighter on this land without a second skin to rely on. I did it solely to keep my family safe."
She didn't look down at the bruised Luna on the floor.
"You should be incredibly thankful, Alpha," Valera promised softly, the temperature in the room dropping to a freezing chill, "that my parents’ deaths were born of her pathetic incompetence."
"Because if I step off this territory and discover even a shred of evidence proving this was a deliberate, orchestrated conspiracy..." She leaned forward slightly. "I will inevitably return. And I will personally, violently burn this entire pack house, and every single corrupt leader inside it, directly to the ground, salting the bloody earth so nothing ever grows again."
Kaelen’s jaw clamped shut. He recognized it wasn't a threat. It was an absolute promise.
"Now," Valera demanded, her posture perfect, delivering her choice for the final time. "Accept my resignation. Or officially exile me. Do it now. Because either way—I walk out of this room, and this territory, tonight, a free woman."
His immense, fragile pride violently warring with the undeniable reality of the lethal monster standing in his office, Kaelen finally exhaled a shaky, defeated breath.
"Your resignation is officially accepted," Kaelen choked out reluctantly, every word tasting like ash. "You are formally relieved of all pack duties and blood oaths."
Valera gave a single, curt nod. "Good."
She turned on her heel and headed for the exit.
"Valera," Kaelen called out quietly, his voice a pathetic, cowardly attempt at reconciliation. "For what it's worth... I was wrong about you."
Valera didn't bother granting him the respect of looking back over her shoulder. "I stopped needing your validation a very, very long time ago."
She walked out into the corridor.
The heavy, ornate oak door clicked shut securely behind her with a profound, resonant finality, severing her abusive ties forever.
The cool, limitless, and highly dangerous night welcomed her as she walked purposefully down the grand, sweeping marble steps of the pack house for the absolute last time. The crisp, unburdened air filled her expanding lungs.
*Where will we stay for the night?* Aethra asked gently, acknowledging practically that the cramped warrior quarters were no longer a viable option.
Valera lifted her bruised face to the glowing silver moon, a profound, overwhelming sense of absolute peace washing over the raw edges of her grief.
*We will hike to our parents' small cabin at the edge of the deep woods,* Valera decided with unwavering certainty. *It is the only physical thing we have left of them. And the absolute only place that truly feels like home.*
For the first time in her entire, grueling life, the suffocating iron chains of blind duty and rigid pack hierarchy were completely gone.
She was finally, truly free.
