Ashes of Betrayal

Thick woodsmoke and the copper taint of blood smothered the sacred clearing beneath a pitch-black canopy.

Valera anchored herself in the front row, an ice-carved statue staring down the crackling funeral pyres. Sleep and food had not touched her in a day. Her armor was supposedly clean, yet she still felt the phantom slickness clinging to her skin. Her fingernails dug violently into her palms.

Two wrapped figures rested on the elevated timber. Her mother and father. They were kind, fiercely loyal people with zero pack ranking, folks who foolishly trusted a magically reinforced bunker to shield them from a massacre.

She had torn her own flesh holding the northern perimeter against a feral horde. She bought their safety with her bare hands, and none of it had mattered.

Alpha Kaelen occupied the space across the fire, dressed in pristine black. He recited a painfully rehearsed eulogy about noble sacrifices and the unavoidable tragedies of warfare. Luna Lorelai chimed in with equally hollow platitudes about the Goddess. Valera tuned out every meaningless syllable.

The leadership eventually shut up. The snapping flames became the only noise as Valera stepped across the boundary line.

"My parents were gentle people without titles," Valera projected, her raspy tone slicing through the murmuring crowd. "They never demanded protection. They just trusted the system."

"They taught me true strength means bleeding for what matters," she continued, locking her dead gaze on the burning wood. "So I fought at the front. I covered the elites when they faltered. And while I held that line, someone deliberately slipped past."

The collective breath left the clearing.

"I walked the perimeter before the sun came up," Valera said with clinical detachment, turning her head to lock eyes with the leadership platform. "The northern breach was a distraction."

Kaelen shifted his weight, his posture going rigid.

"Whoever butchered them bypassed the primary wards without a sound," she stated. "They ignored the patrol routes, walked right through the tripwires, and completely bypassed easier targets to hit the exact two wolves left exposed outside the bunker."

Dead silence reigned.

"I have no idea who wrote the contract," Valera promised into the quiet darkness. "But somebody on the inside paved the way."

The flames engulfed the timber. Valera remained rooted to the dirt until the fire burned out entirely.

For three excruciating days, Valera barricaded herself inside the deafening quiet of her childhood home. She sat rigidly in the living room, staring at a half-finished mug of chamomile tea and her father's scattered woodcarving tools.

'You are shattering,' Aethra noted, the massive wolf pacing restlessly in the back of her mind.

'I know,' Valera answered the empty room.

'We do not have to endure this isolation.'

'We already are.'

Dawn broke on the fourth day. Valera marched straight onto the gravel of the main training grounds, ignoring the sudden halt of sparring warriors around her. She closed the distance to Kaelen, Torin, and Jarek.

"I am resigning from the roster," Valera announced.

Kaelen’s head snapped around, embarrassment and anger warring on his face. "Excuse me? You cannot be serious."

"I am."

"You are the foundation of our defense," Torin interjected, stepping aggressively into her space. "The recruits need—"

"They will manage," Valera interrupted flatly. "They always do."

Kaelen squared his shoulders, attempting to force his dominant aura onto her. "Walking away in our darkest hour is not what your parents would have wanted."

The control snapped. Valera’s irises ignited with a blinding, luminescent silver.

"Do not," Valera snarled, a guttural, inhuman sound that forced the heavily muscled Alpha into an involuntary half-step backward. "You do not get to weaponize their memory to cover your catastrophic failures."

Nobody dared to breathe.

"I surrendered my life to this territory," Valera said loudly, ensuring the entire yard heard her. "And yet my family was miraculously the only members left out of an impenetrable bunker. I absolutely refuse to bleed for a pack that set us up."

Kaelen opened his mouth, then snapped it shut.

Valera reached up and unclasped the heavy silver insignia from her tactical jacket. She let the metal catch the morning light before dropping it directly onto the dirt next to Kaelen’s boots.

She turned her back on the Alpha—a blatant, punishable offense—and walked toward the perimeter.

'This isn't the finish line,' Aethra rumbled deeply.

'No,' Valera agreed, her mental tone pure ice. 'It's the start.'

Far beyond the safety of the pack borders, a damp, subterranean cavern reeked of mold and wet stone. A bloodstained rogue dropped heavily to one knee before a towering, shadowed figure.

Heavy gold coins hit the rock floor with a sharp clink.

"The specific targets are dealt with," the rogue confirmed in a gravelly tone.

"Perfect," the obscured figure replied.

Miles away, Valera kept walking into the tree line, oblivious to the ancient, sprawling conspiracy she had just stepped into.
