Hold the Line
A ragged shriek tore through the midnight quiet, echoing across the dark borderlands before a single watchman could reach the warning horn.
Valera was already in motion. She never waited to be told what to do, and tonight was no exception.
Her heavy boots hammered up the stone steps of the northern rampart as freezing night air burned down her throat. Every sense snapped into razor focus, pulling in the sudden shift on the wind. The breeze reeked of spilled blood, decay, and pure feral fury.
Rogues were at the border. It wasn't a stray pair testing the boundary lines, either—dozens of them were pouring out of the pines like living shadows. Starved and rabid, their glowing eyes burned with madness as they charged in jagged, uncoordinated waves. These weren't desperate outcasts looking for territory; they had come to butcher everything in their path.
Valera braced her boots against the walkway stones, taking in the entire perimeter in one quick sweep. All along the wall, patrol guards were rushing to their posts, half of them still buckling leather straps while others white-knuckled their blades with visibly shaking hands.
“What's the call?” a guard yelled over the rising din. “Where is the Alpha?”
Valera didn't miss a beat, already gauging closing distances, enemy numbers, and gaps in their line. “Give me the deployment orders!” she barked, catching a young fighter by the shoulder to steady him. “Where is Alpha Kaelen?”
Everyone on that wall knew she was the deadliest fighter in Scarlet Maw, yet Kaelen had refused to promote her for years. He had denied her a Delta badge and withheld every title she had bled to earn, leaving her ranked as a common foot soldier. Still, Valera never wasted breath complaining about it; titles meant nothing when the border was breaking and her parents needed to be kept alive.
“We're holding the outer perimeter,” the breathless guard stammered back. “The Deltas have the second ring, and the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma are anchoring the core. The Luna already led the non-combatants down into the shelter.”
That last part hit her hard. “Every single one of them?” Valera pressed, tightening her grip on his arm. “My mother and father included?”
A warm, steady presence brushed against the edge of her consciousness. 'They are out of harm's way,' Aethra assured her, calm and unwavering. 'Both of them are locked inside the shelter.'
Valera blew out a tight breath, planting her feet. 'Good.'
Without another second of hesitation, she shut down the open pack channels in her head, cutting off the wash of raw terror and confusion from the lower ranks until only the command links and Aethra remained. She needed absolute clarity.
'Aethra,' Valera sent silently, her gaze tracking the front wave of beasts crossing the clearing, 'we still have to keep your presence under wraps tonight, don't we?'
'We do,' her wolf answered. 'I will feed you what strength I can under the surface. Still, if our backs are pushed to the wall… keeping Mom, Dad, and these people alive comes before any secret.'
Valera set her teeth as the lead beasts cleared the treeline, ragged snarls ripping from their throats. 'They're on us,' Aethra warned.
“BRACE THE LINE!” Valera bellowed.
Her voice thundered across the rampart, cutting straight through the panic and snapping the scattered guards into a tight shield wall. Nobody second-guessed her command out here in the mud. On the border, every soldier knew that following Valera's lead was the only way to survive until sunrise.
Steel scraped clear of leather scabbards as claws extended along the wall, and the night erupted into sheer violence.
The lead rogue launched himself straight over the parapet, jaws wide. Valera stepped right into his path, fighting in her human skin as she always did, though Aethra's power hummed beneath her muscles to sharpen her speed and striking weight. Ducking clean under the beast's snapping teeth, she rammed the point of her elbow straight into his windpipe and wrenched her forearm sideways.
Crushed cartilage gave out instantly, and the heavy body dropped dead to the stones.
Three more scrambled up behind him. Valera moved through the press like a pale blade in the dark, her silver-forged steel cutting clean through matted fur, muscle, and bone without a single wasted motion. She didn't pause or second-guess a single swing; every step was measured to kill.
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught six heavy rogues peeling away from the main crush to sprint toward the weaker eastern gate.
“East gate—drop back and close ranks!” Valera roared over the clash of steel. “Form up on me!”
She vaulted clean over the timber parapet, hitting the muddy earth below in a tight shoulder roll before coming up with her blades ready. Behind her boots, the dirt churned as she tore straight into the flanking group, matching every ragged breath to a lethal cut.
In the tight press, a massive rogue slipped past her guard and raked his filthy claws deep across her left shoulder.
White-hot pain tore through her flesh, drawing a low, furious snarl from Valera's throat.
'Enough of this,' Aethra growled deep in her chest.
For a split second, the pale light catching her skin flared brighter—subtle enough that no panicked soldier in the dark would notice, yet more than enough to flood her veins with raw strength.
Moving with sudden, explosive force, Valera wrenched a lunging attacker's arm until the joint gave way, drove the heel of her boot through a second rogue's kneecap with a loud crack like splitting timber, and launched a third beast backward into the pine trunks with a heavy open-palmed strike.
Seeing her hold the gap alone, the wavering border guards surged forward to lock shields at her flanks. Her presence always steadied them; the younger wolves matched her footwork without thinking, trusting her to drag them through the slaughter alive.
'That is how a true guardian holds a border,' Aethra murmured inside her mind.
The brutal melee ground on for hours until the eastern horizon bruised with violet and pale gold. Mangled rogue carcasses choked the trampled mud along the walls, and the few mangy survivors finally broke off, limping back into the deep timber with ragged howls of defeat.
Heavy quiet settled over the torn earth, broken only by the ragged gasps of exhausted fighters.
Valera stood planted at the front of the line, her stained blade pointed toward the dirt as her chest rose and fell in deep, even pulls. Thick blood—both her own and the enemy's—soaked through her leather tunic, and her torn shoulder throbbed fiercely, yet she kept her feet square.
Then, a faint whisper brushed across her mind.
'Valera!'
Her mother and father's voices flickered against her consciousness—and cut out in the same heartbeat.
The family bond snapped shut.
Her breath caught hard in her throat. 'Mom?' she reached out frantically, throwing her thoughts toward the pack house. 'Dad?'
Dead silence answered her.
Cold dread flooded her veins as she shoved harder against the mental space where they had always been, finding only a hollow, echoing blankness. 'Mom! Dad!'
Spinning on her heel, she broke into a dead sprint. Valera tore down the dirt trail through the pines toward the main compound, her boots skidding over wet roots as her lungs burned for air and terror drowned out the ache in her torn muscles.
Please let it be the shielding. Please let me be wrong.
She burst out of the treeline into the central lawn and skidded to a halt.
Alpha Kaelen, Beta Torin, and Gamma Jarek stood together on the torn grass, forming a tight half-circle around several still shapes on the ground. As their heads turned toward her, heavy, unmistakable pity shadowed their faces.
“No,” Valera breathed, her voice barely a sound.
'Their scent is on the wind,' Aethra choked out, her ancient voice fracturing into a raw, agonizing wail of grief that shook Valera to the bone.
“No!” Valera screamed, lunging forward across the grass. “What are they doing out here? They were locked in the bunker! HOW ARE THEY OUT HERE?”
None of the three men spoke a word.
Valera hit the bloody turf on her knees between her parents, dragging her mother's limp, cooling frame up against her chest and pressing her brow to the torn fabric of her shirt as a shattered, animal cry ripped straight from her lungs. “Mom! Dad!”
The raw howl of agony tore across the quiet compound, carrying such bottomless grief that the battered warriors emerging from the trees froze in their tracks.
“How did this happen?” she choked out through broken sobs, jerking her tear-streaked face up toward the three commanders standing above her. “They were supposed to be locked down underground! Safe! HOW?”
Kaelen and his officers stood mute, unable to meet her eyes.
More border guards filed into the clearing behind her, staring in stunned silence at the bodies on the lawn. Valera's parents were gone—butchered in the grass by a rogue that had somehow ghosted past every single defensive ring on the territory.
How had a rabid beast walked right past the wall guards, the Deltas, and the top three commanders of Scarlet Maw? How had her parents ended up slaughtered in the open when the Luna herself had marched the non-combatants down into the vault?
Not a single wolf in the clearing made a sound as the brutal truth settled over the lawn. Valera—the deadliest shield this pack possessed—had bled on the front wall all night long to keep everyone else breathing, only to lose the two people who meant the world to her.
