Shattered Pride
The solid oak barrier clicked shut, sealing the Alpha’s office in a suffocating quiet. Silver energy still buzzed violently against the plaster, leaving a metallic tang in the air. Ruined mahogany and shredded documents littered the carpet, marking the exact trajectory of Luna Lorelai’s violent impact.
She remained sprawled amidst the wreckage. A deep, throbbing heat radiated from the fresh bruises coloring her ribs, yet the physical damage paled beside the absolute mortification choking her throat. She forced her palms flat against the cracked floorboards and pushed her battered frame upward.
Beta Torin kept his stare locked dead ahead.
Gamma Jarek attempted to avert his eyes, but failed.
The sitting Luna of the Scarlet Maw had just been rag-dolled into a wall.
By an unranked warrior who flat-out refused to submit.
Lorelai stood fully, hastily brushing the debris from her torn tunic. She retracted her extended claws, burying her bare, vulnerable hands into the fabric as she forced her spine straight. She directed a scorching glare at Kaelen. The Alpha remained planted behind the remnants of his desk, his broad hands gripping the splintered edge. He stared blankly at the closed exit.
"You just let her leave." Her voice came out thin, struggling to fill the heavy silence.
Kaelen offered nothing.
Lorelai let out a harsh, brittle sound. "She laid hands on me in your domain. She openly threatened this territory. And you did absolutely nothing."
Kaelen slowly shifted his focus to her. "That is enough."
The flat delivery hit her like a physical strike.
"Enough?" she threw the word back at him. "Is that the extent of your reaction to what she just did to your mate?"
"She defended herself," Kaelen countered evenly. "Only after you lunged at her."
"So you blame me?" Lorelai gaped at him. "I am your Luna. She was a foot soldier. She had zero right to touch me, no right to challenge—"
"She does not hold warrior status anymore," Kaelen cut in.
The words snapped her mouth shut.
Lorelai blinked slowly. "What?"
Kaelen let out a heavy breath. "She handed in her resignation. I took it."
Torin shifted subtly. Jarek swallowed hard.
Shock washed over Lorelai's face before fury rushed in to replace it.
"You accepted her resignation," she spat. "Right after she degraded me?"
"She earned the right to leave," Kaelen stated. "She earned her choice."
"And what about my authority?" Lorelai’s pitch climbed. "You stood there while she blamed me for the evacuation failures in front of your Beta and Gamma."
"You were responsible for the evacuation," Kaelen reminded her coldly.
Lorelai went rigid. "I followed the established protocol."
"Your protocol left two of our own exposed to the rogues," Kaelen said quietly.
Her fingernails bit into her palms. "You don't know that it was my fault."
"No," Kaelen conceded. "But neither do you."
A dense, oppressive silence flooded the wrecked office.
Lorelai felt a cold shift deep in her gut. The anger gave way to creeping fear. Valera had not retreated as a broken exile—she had walked out leaving massive fractures behind her.
Lorelai forced her breathing to steady and pivoted her approach. "She said something."
Kaelen kept his expression blank.
"She mentioned a betrayal," Lorelai pressed. "Not just by me. By you."
The muscles corded tightly along Kaelen's neck.
"She said you rejected her," Lorelai finished, her eyes narrowing.
Torin immediately froze in place. Gamma Jarek lifted his chin, his previous discomfort completely overridden by sudden, sharp attention at the word 'rejected'.
Lorelai closed the physical distance between them, demanding answers. "Care to explain exactly what she meant by that, Kaelen?"
Kaelen shut his eyes. When his heavy lids finally parted, the Alpha looked utterly exhausted, the weight of a buried lie cracking his posture.
"Her inner wolf remained dormant," he confessed into the quiet room. "When she came of age at eighteen."
Lorelai frowned, the pieces not fitting. "So what?"
"The Goddess paired us. She was my fated mate," Kaelen admitted bluntly. "But I absolutely could not present a powerless Luna to this pack. She was an unacceptable liability. I made a calculated decision for our collective survival."
Lorelai stood paralyzed as the truth clicked into place. "So you severed the bond and rejected her."
"It was the only viable path," Kaelen defended, his tone turning to hardened granite. "Her parents pleaded with me on their knees not to enforce a banishment. So I granted them that mercy."
"That wasn't mercy," Lorelai countered coldly, a frigid edge entering her voice. "You deliberately buried your true mate in the mud as a lowly frontline warrior to keep your humiliating secret safe."
The raw accusation hung in the air, heavy and entirely undeniable.
A mocking, hollow laugh tore its way from Lorelai’s throat. "And look at the sheer irony of it. She stands in this very room today carrying enough raw power to bring down the architecture, and you stare at the door like you've just seen a ghost."
Kaelen offered absolutely no denial.
Lorelai's eyes gleamed with the sharp thrill of discovery. "You are genuinely afraid of her."
"I am exercising caution," Kaelen corrected stiffly.
Lorelai shook her head with a bitter smirk. "No. You are terrified because she evolved into a lethal weapon existing completely outside your jurisdiction." She threw a lingering glance toward the shattered door frame. "And outside mine."
Kaelen remained stubbornly silent, unable to refute the claim.
That unspoken confirmation acted as a massive fracture between them.
Lorelai squared her shoulders, pulling the tattered remnants of her dignity back into place. "So what is the next strategic move?"
Kaelen stared blankly at the empty hallway. "She stays."
Lorelai faltered, losing her regal posture. "Excuse me?"
"She elected not to leave the territory boundaries," Kaelen declared flatly. "She will transition to a regular civilian resident."
Her pulse spiked with genuine alarm. "You are actually letting her stay here?"
"She has been stripped of her rank," Kaelen asserted with firm authority. "She commands no one. She carries zero authority within this pack."
"And where exactly is she supposed to live?" Lorelai challenged.
Kaelen’s voice softened by the smallest fraction. "The old cabin that belonged to her parents."
Lorelai’s chest constricted tightly at the location.
"It was her sole request," Kaelen elaborated. "She wants total isolation. Nothing more than that."
Lorelai scanned his rigid features, hunting aggressively for a sliver of weakness or regret to exploit later.
"You are just letting her hide away," Lorelai accused.
"No," Kaelen replied evenly. "I am letting her grieve her dead."
He turned his attention abruptly to his ranking officers standing nearby. "Torin. Jarek."
The Beta and Gamma snapped instantly to rigid attention.
"Effective immediately," Kaelen ordered, the deep, resonating weight of his Alpha command vibrating through the damaged room, "Valera Blackbriar is officially relieved of her warrior status. She exists within Scarlet Maw borders strictly as a non-combatant."
Lorelai ground her teeth together so hard her jaw ached.
"Communicate this exact decision to the entire population," Kaelen instructed. "Inform the training grounds immediately. Ensure every single member understands she operates completely outside our chain of command."
Beta Torin gave a crisp, absolute nod. "It will be done."
Gamma Jarek hesitated for a fraction of a second before dipping his head in compliance. "Yes, Alpha."
"This is not a display of weakness," Kaelen said, his intense gaze flicking directly to Lorelai to ensure she understood. "This is active containment."
Lorelai turned her head away in disgust, her gaze catching on the shattered glass of a framed territorial map hanging crooked on the wall.
She stared at her own bruised, pathetic reflection, and a freezing wave of dread finally anchored itself permanently in her stomach.
Valera had not been chased out in disgrace.
She had made the active, conscious choice to remain.
And that reality was infinitely more terrifying. Because wolves who planted their feet in the dirt after being violently stripped of absolutely everything...
Were wolves who possessed nothing left to fear.
