Unmasking the Past
Panic seized Talia’s heart as she stared at the damning video playing on Tristan’s phone. She swiftly masked her internal alarm behind a fresh flood of pathetic tears. Clinging tightly to his arm, she wove an elaborate, manipulative excuse with desperate intensity.
"Tristan, it all happened so fast. In the chaos of the moment, I truly thought she had pushed me out of anger. After all, we're the ones who so deeply betrayed her. The next time I see her, I swear I will apologize properly."
The baby in her arms continued to wail. Talia lowered her head and gently soothed the child with rhythmic pats. Beneath her sorrowful facade, a vicious confidence surged through her mind. She firmly believed that no matter what evidence came to light, Nadia could never possibly win against Tristan’s deep-seated love for her.
Contrary to her arrogant assumptions, Tristan’s dark frown only deepened. He knew in his core that Nadia, despite her cold exterior, was never one to provoke trouble or harm others without a concrete cause. He remained silent, letting the heavy atmosphere settle between them. Internally, a painful realization washed over him. His harsh words to Nadia earlier had been unjust. He silently resolved that he must seek her out to apologize properly the next time their paths crossed.
Safe inside the luxurious confines of Gareth's speeding car, Camille leaned her exhausted head against the cool tinted window. A profound, suffocating weight pressed down on her chest. The devastating reality was setting in. The man she had devoted herself to for years could still effortlessly wound her to the core with a single careless sentence. Even more unsettling was the haunting memory of little Leo's desperate, yearning gaze as he reached for her in the hallway. That tiny, grasping motion stirred agonizing feelings about the children she had spent two long years burying in the deepest corners of her mind.
Gareth expertly navigated the vehicle toward the sprawling Mistvale Estate. Camille closed her eyes, turning the bizarre hospital encounter over and over in her sharp mind. They were already legally divorced. The Harrington chapter was closed. Why on earth was Talia still so ruthlessly, dangerously targeting her?
A closely guarded secret flashed through Camille’s mind. She knew for a fact that Talia had callously abandoned Tristan for another wealthy man years ago when Tristan was left crippled and bankrupt. It was an ugly, undeniable truth that Tristan stubbornly, foolishly refused to believe.
Determined to seize control of her safety and take matters into her own capable hands, Camille opened her eyes. She turned her piercing gaze to Gareth with quiet, terrifying resolve.
"Find someone trustworthy in the underground network. I need a comprehensive, invasive investigation into Talia. Find out the exact, precise date that child was born, which hospital, and what truly happened during the year she supposedly returned. I personally overheard her on the phone wanting me dead. Look into every single place she's lived these past few years. Also, dig up the exact identity of the man she left with back then."
Gareth’s expression hardened into strict professionalism. He gave a curt nod and immediately set the massive shadow investigation into motion via encrypted messages on his console.
The car glided up the long driveway and rolled to a stop. Camille stepped through the towering doors into the grand, opulent hall of Mistvale Estate. The estate's head butler, Rupert Lowen, greeted her with a warm and respectful bow.
Seeking the comfort of family after a draining day, Camille looked around the expansive foyer. "Where is Grandpa?"
Rupert chuckled warmly, though his posture carried a hint of awkwardness. "The very moment Mr. Vance heard you were officially back and taking over, he packed his luxury bags. He hopped on a private jet for an overseas business trip to play competitive chess with his old billionaire friends. He dumped the entire crushing weight of the international corporate empire squarely onto your young shoulders after waiting over four agonizing years for your return."
Camille stood speechless. Utter exasperation washed over her at her grandfather's shameless, lightning-fast escape from his duties. She managed a tired, exasperated smile.
"Please have a simple dinner prepared for me, Rupert."
Dragging her exhausted body upstairs, Camille sought refuge in her private quarters. She needed to bathe and change out of the clothes tainted by the day's bitter encounters. The warm water offered a brief respite, washing away the physical grime but leaving the mental fatigue untouched. She began to settle into her powerful, independent life at Mistvale, stepping away from the shadows of her past.
She walked back into her bedroom and lay back on the massive, silk-sheeted bed. Staring blankly at the ornate ceiling, she let the silence of the room envelop her. Suddenly, her personal phone buzzed violently on the nightstand with an incoming video call.
Camille leaned over and glanced at the caller ID. The moment she registered the name glowing on the screen, a brilliant, genuinely radiant, and breathtakingly happy smile lit up her previously shadowed face. She snatched up the device and excitedly answered the call.
