Out of the Shadows

"Madeline!" Camille answered, her voice bright with genuine joy.

"Holy crap, Camille, I finally got through to you!" Madeline Carlisle's lively voice blasted through the speaker. "Your grandpa said you went off to face your trials. You vanished for four grueling years. Where did you put me in all that time? Not a single call!"

A bitter smile touched Camille's lips. The past four years had indeed been her personal test. She had failed that test, returning scarred and broken by a man's cruelty.

She let out a soft sigh before speaking. "I am sorry, Madeline. Some things happened these past few years. I could not reach out. But it is settled now. I am back."

Madeline was her closest confidante. She was one of the rare few who knew Camille's true, elite status. Both women fiercely guarded their secretive backgrounds from the public eye.

"Alright, alright, I am not mad at you." Madeline's tone softened. "While you were facing your trials, I got sent off on mine. My grandpa shipped me overseas. I just got back not long ago myself. We have to meet up tomorrow. Our two old geezers have run off abroad on vacation together."

Camille chuckled, realizing Walter had found a travel buddy. "Sounds perfect. Let us meet tomorrow."

Once the comforting call ended, the vibrant energy drained from the massive bedroom. Evening settled over Mistvale Estate, casting long, dark shadows across the walls. A desolate, suffocating emptiness clung to Camille’s skin. She tried to push the lingering ache away, but the silence of the room offered no solace.

When night fell, her fragile sleep shattered. The echoing cries of a dying infant haunted her dreams. She thrashed against the silk sheets, trapped in the visceral memory of her tiny baby. The infant had taken barely a breath before dying right after a traumatic, agonizing birth.

Camille woke in a cold sweat. Fresh tears stained her pale cheeks. A raw sob escaped her trembling lips, echoing in the quiet, empty room.

Tristan’s heart had always belonged to Talia. Camille faced the agonizing reality of her own foolish hope. She kept wondering if her precious child might have survived if Tristan had cared enough to rush her to the hospital sooner during her crisis. Instead, his blind devotion to another woman had cost her baby its life. She lay still in her familiar room, her gaze staring blankly at the ornate ceiling above. A thick wave of grief enveloped her. She wept for a long time before forcing herself out of bed to face the day.

After forcing down a tasteless lunch, Camille meticulously dressed in high-end couture. She draped herself in an intimidating, tailored ensemble that screamed generational wealth and untouched power. She arrived at an exclusive, upscale lounge to meet Madeline for their scheduled catch-up session.

Fate proved cruel. Just as she stepped into the expansive, gilded lobby, she ran directly into Talia.

Talia possessed a delicate, gentle beauty that usually seemed non-threatening to the outside world. But seeing Camille’s striking beauty and the undeniable aura of sheer wealth radiating from her designer clothing, a seething jealousy consumed Talia. Terror gripped Talia’s mind beyond reason. She feared Camille might use this proximity to reveal the explosive truth to Tristan about who had actually donated a liver to save his life. To keep that secret buried forever, Talia went on the offensive.

Feigning sickening sweetness for the benefit of passing onlookers, Talia stepped directly into Camille's path. "Oh, Nadia! Are you here looking for Tristan? I am so sorry, but he is in an important executive meeting upstairs. I just personally brought him his favorite lunch. I am afraid he does not have the time to see you."

A smug, arrogant smile played on Talia's lips as she delivered the fake pity.

Camille stopped dead in her tracks. She met the smug expression with a gaze of cold mockery.

"Talia, Tristan isn't even here in this building. There is no need for this pathetic, theatrical act. You love playing the delicate, fragile little flower for him, and he is willing to be fooled by it. Fool him all you want. I do not care. But don't you ever bother trying that garbage with me. We both know exactly what kind of filthy, venomous person you are under that mask." Camille delivered the words with surgical precision.

The insult shattered Talia's facade. She dropped her innocent pretense. Her eyes turned sharp and deadly, mimicking the cold steel of knives.

Talia stepped dangerously close. Her face twisted into a mask of pure malice. "Nadia, since you clearly understand just how much Tristan trusts me and despises you, why don't you just do us all a favor, go die, and make things easier?"

With a sudden motion, Talia lunged forward. Her claw-like hands reached out to seize Camille’s arm to intimidate her.

Camille felt disgusted by the proximity. She recoiled and forcefully swatted Talia’s reaching hand away as if brushing off a diseased insect.

At that exact fraction of a second, the polished silver doors of the lobby elevator slid smoothly open.

Catching the movement out of the corner of her eye, Talia flashed a brief, vicious grin. She threw her body backward. She crashed hard onto the polished marble floor with a sickening thud just as Tristan stepped out.
