Prelude to the Hunt

Kaia's POV.

The harsh crunch of gravel under heavy carriage wheels shattered the early morning quiet of our pack grounds. Absolute chaos flooded the territory in a relentless wave. Opulent, foreign carriages rolled through the towering wrought-iron gates in an endless, suffocating line, each one bearing the grand crests of distant packs. Horses snorted aggressively in the chilled air. Visiting warriors dismounted with deep, booming laughter, their heavy boots kicking up clouds of dust as they flooded the courtyard. The Annual Hunt was finally upon us. This was not a simple gathering. It was a cruel, barbaric tradition where visiting packs competed to chase and violently claim women as prized trophies. They treated our lives like a ruthless game of blood and dominance.

My side throbbed in a dull, continuous ache. The deep wounds from the recent rogue attack burned beneath my clothes with every step I took, unhealed and screaming for rest. I tried to mask the heavy limp in my stride, gritting my teeth against the sharp spikes of pain radiating through my ribs.

The head housekeeper, Mrs. Garrick, marched down the narrow stone corridor and intercepted me. She shoved a massive, heavy stack of crisp white linens directly into my arms, nearly knocking me backward.

"Get the guest wing prepared right now. And for the Goddess's sake, do not let anyone see you limp, Kaia. We will not look weak in front of the visiting Alphas." Mrs. Garrick barked the strict order, her eyes narrowing in severe warning at my bruised face.

"I understand, Mrs. Garrick." I gripped the rough fabric tightly, forcing my spine straight despite the agonizing protest of my torn flesh.

I turned and hurried toward the bustling main hall. The vast cavernous room buzzed with a suffocating blend of heavy foreign scents, spilled ale, and aggressive male posturing. The noise was deafening. I found my friend Nessa standing near the long wooden dining tables. She balanced a large silver tray loaded to the brim with overflowing goblets of dark ale.

"Take these to the Ironclaw warriors before they tear apart the heavy furniture. They are already complaining about the service." Nessa shoved three cold, heavy goblets into my hands, her forehead shining with a thin layer of nervous sweat.

"I will take care of them." I nodded firmly.

I weaved my way through the massive throngs of arrogant, demanding visiting warriors. The air felt thick with their predatory tension. I expertly dodged the lingering, inappropriate touches of high-ranking males. Whenever a heavy hand reached for my hip or a drunken wolf stepped into my path to corner me against a stone pillar, I twisted away smoothly. I desperately tried to keep my face completely blank. I just needed to keep moving to survive the exhausting shift. I ignored the cruel sneers, the hungry leers, and the terrifying reality of what these men planned to do in the woods tomorrow.

By midday, the blistering heat in the great hall grew stifling. Exhaustion settled deep into my bones, and the throbbing pain in my injured side flared into a blinding, consuming agony. I turned my back on the massive crowd, ready to slip back into the cool shadows of the servant corridors for just a minute of peace.

A massive, rough hand clamped forcefully around my wrist.

The sudden grip crushed my delicate bones. I whipped around to see Vane towering over me. He was a notoriously cruel and aggressive warrior from our own pack, a man who relished in the pain of others. His breath hit my face in a thick, foul wave of stale ale and roasted meat.

"Look at you, still walking around. I heard the rogues tore you apart. Pity they did not finish the job yesterday." Vane laughed loudly, mocking the brutal injuries I recently suffered with a dark, vicious gleam in his eyes.

"Let go of me, Vane." I demanded sharply, keeping my voice steady despite the sharp spike of pure fear striking my chest.

His bruising grip only tightened, digging his thick fingers into my pulse point. He yanked me roughly closer, his sheer brutal strength easily overpowering my weak, injured frame.

"Do not be like that, little wolf." He chuckled darkly, his eyes raking down my body with disgusting intent.

His filthy fingers slid from my wrist, brushing down to grip my waist where they had absolutely no right to be. Panic rapidly surged through my veins, hot and blinding. The terrifying thought of this vile male getting his hands on me during the Hunt tomorrow made my stomach churn with sickening nausea. I shoved both of my hands as hard as I could against his solid, unyielding chest.

"I said stop! Get off me!" I hissed loudly, thrashing wildly against his punishing hold.

Suddenly, the chaotic noise of the entire room dropped into dead silence.

The shift was sudden and deeply unnatural. One second, the grand hall echoed with the booming voices of hundreds of violent warriors, and the next, there was nothing. A heavy, suffocating shadow fell over us. The air in my lungs froze, turning brittle and cold as a primal terror swept through the room.

I turned my head slowly toward the grand entrance of the hall.

The Alpha King stood at the massive open doors.

He was a terrifying myth brought to life. He was impossibly tall, broad-shouldered, and draped in a dark, regal aura that commanded absolute, unquestioning obedience. He was flanked by a lethal, formidable crew of towering warriors, but my wide eyes could only focus on him. He possessed piercing silver-gold eyes that swept over the frozen room like a deadly blade. His crushing, immense presence radiated outward, slamming into the chest of every single wolf present with the force of a physical blow.

Around the hall, massive visiting warriors and arrogant Alphas folded instantly under the pressure. Every single wolf in the room instinctively dropped their heads in deep, terrifying submission. Proud necks bared. Knees bent. The overwhelming power of the Alpha King forced the entire room into total surrender.

Every wolf except Vane.

Vane remained standing, but his heavy grip on my wrist froze in sheer, unadulterated terror. His large body trembled under the suffocating weight of the King's dominance.

The Alpha King moved forward. His heavy black boots made a slow, deliberate sound against the polished stone floor. His intense, silver-gold gaze bypassed the massive sea of bowing heads and zeroed in directly on Vane’s hand clamped around my bruised waist.

"Release her."

The simple command left the Alpha King's lips in a quiet voice, but it carried through the silent hall like rolling thunder. The sheer, raw power woven into those two words rattled my teeth and shook the very foundation of the room.

Vane's face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ash gray. He dropped my arm instantly, ripping his filthy hands away from my body as if my skin had caught fire. He stumbled backward awkwardly, his large boots tangling together, and bowed his head so low his chin hit his trembling chest.

"M-my King, I am sorry. I meant no disrespect." Vane stammered pathetic, broken apologies, his voice shaking with raw, undeniable fear.

The King ignored him entirely. He did not spare the pathetic, groveling warrior a single glance. Instead, those sharp, calculating eyes locked onto my small frame. He studied me with an intense, burning focus that made my breath hitch in my throat. His gaze drifted down my neck, lingering on the edge of the thick white bandage peeking from beneath the collar of my worn blouse. He then looked down at my hands, immediately catching the faint, residual tremor shaking my fingers from the brutal rogue attack.

"You're hurt." He stated.

It was not a question. It was an absolute fact. His deep, commanding voice resonated deep inside my chest, demanding the truth without ever asking for it.

Heat aggressively flared in my pale cheeks, burning away the cold chill of his powerful aura. I ducked my head, desperate to hide the dark flush spreading across my skin.

"It is nothing, my King. Just a scratch." I stammered out the lie, quickly pulling my trembling hands behind my back to hide my weakness.

He arched a dark brow, his piercing silver-gold eyes seeing straight through my blatant lie. He knew exactly how badly I was injured. The air between us cracked with a heavy, dangerous tension. I braced myself for his harsh reprimand, for the cruel dismissal I was so used to receiving from powerful males in this pack.

Instead, he simply inclined his head slightly.

It was a minuscule movement, a silent, powerful acknowledgment that left me utterly stunned. Without another word, he moved deeper into the grand hall, his lethal men following right behind him like silent shadows of death.

Vane wasted no time. He slunk away into the terrified crowd, disappearing like the coward he truly was. I stood frozen near the stone arches, clutching my worn blouse. My entire world shifted on its axis in the span of a few minutes.

For the very first time in my life, under the Alpha King's piercing gaze, I hadn't felt invisible or worthless.

The rest of the day blurred in a chaotic sea of anxious, hurried whispers. The great hall buzzed with frantic nervous energy, the visiting packs terrified by the sudden, unexpected arrival of the supreme ruler. I tried my hardest to fade back into the background. I collected empty plates, scrubbed down the sticky tables, and kept my eyes glued strictly to the stone floor.

Yet, every so often, I felt the heavy, undeniable weight of being watched. I would glance across the crowded hall and catch the Alpha King staring at me. He never looked for long—just long enough to make my pulse stumble and my inner wolf pace restlessly in my mind. The oppressive anxiety gripping my chest began shifting into awe and a dangerous, fluttering curiosity.

Hours later, the heavy darkness of night finally blanketed the territory.

Lying awake in my dark chamber, my injured side throbbed relentlessly against the thin, lumpy mattress. The pale moonlight spilled across the wooden floorboards, casting long, eerie shadows across the walls. I stared up at the cracked ceiling, one solitary thought burning brightly in my mind.

The Hunt had always been solely about survival. It was a brutal, terrifying test to see if I could outrun the feral monsters looking to claim me as a helpless prize. But with the mythical Alpha King here, roaming these very halls, it feels like the very fabric of reality is about to change.

I pull the thin blanket tight across my chest, listening to the distant, haunting howls echoing from the dark woods. I pray this shift in reality is for the better. Because I definitely do not want a male like Vane catching me in the woods tomorrow and forcing me into a lifelong nightmare.
