Caught by the King
Kaia's POV
The morning air inside the great hall hums with aggressive, restless energy. Visiting warriors practically overflow the cavernous room. Long, heavy wooden tables stretch from one end of the hall to the other, groaning under the weight of roasted meats, thick loaves of bread, and endless pitchers of steaming coffee. Shifters from every pack crowd the benches. Their loud laughter and deep, rumbling growls blend into a deafening roar that echoes off the high stone walls. I weave my way through the packed room, my hands gripping the edges of a massive silver platter piled high with fresh fruit. Every step feels like wading through thick mud.
But the true, terrifying weight of the room sits squarely at the center table.
I keep my eyes lowered, but I can still see Caius perfectly. Our future Alpha lounges in his carved wooden chair, putting on a pathetic show of forced ease. Zara sits right beside him, draped in expensive, sheer silk that clings to her curves. She tilts her chin up, looking out over the noisy hall as though she already wears a queen's crown. But she is nothing compared to the lethal male sitting at the very head of the table.
The Alpha King.
Even seated in a simple wooden chair, he dwarfs every other warrior in the room. His broad shoulders strain the dark fabric of his tunic, and his sheer presence steals the breath straight from my lungs. His raw dominance presses against my skin, suffocating and sharp, digging into my flesh like actual claws. My palms sweat against the cold metal of the silver tray. My heart races so fast it aches against my ribs, pounding a frantic rhythm in my ears. I force my shaking legs to keep moving forward.
I reach the center table. The air around the Alpha King feels impossibly heavy, buzzing with a dark, terrifying power. I stretch my arms out, intending to set the heavy platter down near his plate and retreat before he even notices a lowly servant.
Just then, he lifts his head.
Those piercing silver-gold eyes lock directly onto mine. The sheer intensity in his gaze pins me in place, stopping my breath in my throat.
My boot catches the jagged edge of the heavy floor rug.
The world tilts. I lurch forward, my stomach dropping to my shoes. I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing for the humiliating crash of silver and fruit hitting the floor, preparing for the painful impact of my knees striking the hard stone tiles.
I never hit the ground.
An iron-strong, calloused hand closes firmly around my wrist. His grip halts my fall in a split second, steadying my entire body effortlessly. My eyes snap open in pure shock. His other hand smoothly catches the falling tray, balancing the massive silver platter and the towering mound of fruit as though it weighs nothing at all.
"Careful."
The Alpha King murmurs the word quietly. His smooth, velvet voice carries a heavy, commanding weight that instantly silences every conversation in the hall. The loud chatter, the clinking of tankards, the aggressive laughter—it all dies in a single heartbeat.
My cheeks burn with intense heat. I pull back in a rush, and he lets go of my wrist. His brief touch leaves a scorching, electric imprint on my skin.
I bow my head low, my chest heaving with panicked breaths. "I am so sorry, my King. Please forgive my clumsiness."
Zara's cruel, high-pitched laughter pierces the dead silence.
Zara leans against Caius's shoulder, sneering at me down her perfect nose. "Look at her. Clumsy little Kaia, always tripping over her own feet. Perhaps we should give her a leash. That way, someone can pull her back before she humiliates the pack in front of royalty."
A cruel wave of snickers ripples across the tables. Burning with deep humiliation, my vision blurs with unshed tears. I drop the tray onto the wooden planks with a loud clatter. I spin on my heel and flee the hall. I do not look back, but I can feel the Alpha King's dark, unreadable gaze tracking my desperate retreat all the way to the heavy double doors.
There is no time to weep in the damp, lonely corners of the kitchens. Before I can even press my face into my hands, a deep, resonating blast blares through the crisp morning air.
The horn.
The official start of the Hunt is here. I wipe my face and push out the heavy back doors, joining the massive rush of bodies heading toward the dark forest edge. The participating packs gather in the trampled dirt clearing. Hundreds of warriors stand ready, their muscles tense, their eyes bright with the feral thrill of the upcoming chase. The energy in the clearing is manic, fueled by bloodlust and ancient traditions.
Caius steps up to the front of the massive crowd. He puffs out his chest, attempting to command the restless sea of dangerous shifters with his usual arrogant posture.
The Alpha King steps forward, passing Caius without a single glance.
The sheer weight of the King's aura washes over the field like a tidal wave. The visiting Alphas immediately bow their heads, submitting to his iron will without a second thought.
The King stands at the very edge of the tree line, scanning the enormous crowd. His silver-gold eyes glow in the dim light. "There will be no killing of the women. If they do not agree to mate you, leave them alone and do not kill them."
His voice booms across the clearing, dark and dominant, carving his new, ironclad law into the minds of every wolf present. A collective roar of agreement rumbles through the assembled packs, shaking the very ground beneath my boots. The horn blows a second time.
The Hunt begins.
I sprint into the tree line and let my beast take over. My bones snap and reform in a fluid, painless motion. White fur bursts across my skin. In seconds, I shift into my wolf. My paws hit the damp earth, tearing through the ferns and moss. The initial thrill of the chase rushes through my veins. The cold wind whips past my face, carrying the rich scent of pine and wet soil.
Then the heat hits.
A sudden, brutal wave of fire tears a pathetic whimper from my throat. It rips through my bloodstream, hot and blinding. I stumble into the dirt, my front legs giving out beneath me. My body burns from the inside out. My skin feels like it is melting against my thick fur. I drag myself forward, panting heavily.
My sweet, intoxicating scent pours heavily into the cool night air, acting like a beacon in the dark woods.
Blind panic surges in my chest. I scramble to get up, but my limbs feel heavy, uncoordinated, and weak. The shift in the woods is immediate. It is terrifying.
Half a dozen massive wolves freeze mid-stride in the trees just ahead of me. Their massive heads snap in my direction. Their nostrils flare, drinking in the sudden, overwhelming scent of an unmated female in deep heat. Their pupils blow wide, consuming the colorful irises. The thrill of the sport vanishes from their expressions, replaced instantly by crazed, primal hunger.
They aren't hunting for glory anymore. They are hunting me.
I bolt through the thick underbrush. Terror pushes me forward, but my muscles refuse to cooperate. I am sluggish. Every desperate movement sends a spike of agonizing pain shooting up my spine. The burning ache in my lower belly grows stronger with every passing second, demanding a mate I refuse to take.
Heavy paws thunder against the earth right behind me. Snarls echo through the dark trees. Drool flies from their snapping jaws. They are closing the distance, driven mad by my scent.
I veer left, aiming for a thick cluster of bushes to hide my glowing white coat. My front paw snags on a rotting, fallen log hidden in the deep shadows.
I tumble hard to the dirt.
The brutal impact knocks the wind straight out of my lungs. I roll over, gasping for air, kicking my back legs in a desperate attempt to stand.
It is too late. The feral, drooling wolves burst through the tree line. They surround me in a tight, inescapable circle, their crazed eyes locked onto my helpless form. They bare their razor-sharp teeth, lowering their massive heads to close in for the brutal claim.
I squeeze my eyes shut and brace for the horrific end.
A crushing, suffocating aura rolls through the trees like a physical shockwave.
The invisible force slams into the clearing, cracking the very branches above our heads. It drives the crazed wolves flat to their bellies mid-stride. Their aggressive snarls instantly turn into high-pitched, pathetic whines. They press their snouts deep into the dirt, paralyzed by the sheer dominance crashing down on them.
I open my eyes, gasping for breath against the heavy pressure filling the air.
Through the dark shadows of the ancient trees, he emerges.
The Alpha King.
He stands in his massive, pitch-black wolf form, towering over the entire clearing. He is a beast of pure nightmares, built of thick muscle and lethal power. His silver-gold eyes glow like molten steel in the dark, piercing through the gloom and locking directly onto the feral males.
He unleashes a fierce, earth-shaking snarl.
The booming sound vibrates through my bones. It instantly extinguishes the feral wolves' crazed hunger, snapping them out of their lust-driven trance. Terrified out of their minds, the males scramble backward. They tuck their tails between their legs and bolt back into the deep woods in sheer terror, desperate to escape the King's wrath.
Silence falls over the clearing. The only sound left is my own ragged breathing.
I whimper on the ground, my body curling inward. Instinct takes over my mind, and I tilt my head back, baring my neck to him in utter submission.
His heavy gaze tracks down and locks onto mine.
He does not move closer right away. He stands at the edge of the shadows, watching me tremble in the dirt. The agonizing fire of my heat clashes fiercely with his raw, overwhelming power. A dangerous, undeniable recognition sparks between our souls, tying an invisible, electric thread between his towering black wolf and my helpless white one.
The Alpha King takes a slow, deliberate step forward.
His dark aura sweeps over the clearing, wrapping around my trembling body like heavy, unyielding chains. The sheer terror in my heart fades, replaced by a deep, breathless awe. As his giant paws press into the moss, closing the distance between us, I know with undeniable certainty that my life will never be the same again.
