Shattered Illusions

Kaia's POV

The world pieces itself back together in disjointed fragments. First comes the sharp, bitter scent of healing herbs and crushed root paste smeared across my burning flesh. Then, the anxious murmurs of familiar voices bleeding through the thick fog in my heavy head. Finally, the agonizing, rhythmic throb rips through my side, dragging me back to consciousness with a breathless gasp. Every inhale feels like shards of glass grating against my ribs.

I blink my eyes open. The dim, warm glow of lantern light stings my pupils. My mother sits perched on the edge of the narrow wooden cot, weeping softly into her hands. Her dark hair hangs loose from its usual braids, sticking to her damp cheeks. My father and my older brother, Soren, hover just behind her, their broad shoulders tense with unshed adrenaline and lingering fear.

"Kaia? Sweetheart, can you hear me?" My mother reaches out, her trembling fingers tracing the unbruised skin of my face. "Oh, thank the Goddess. You scared us half to death."

I try to push myself up on my elbows to assure her I am fine. Fire erupts along my ribs, forcing a pained hiss through my teeth as I collapse back onto the thin, lumpy mattress.

"You saved the trainee, Kaia. Everyone saw your bravery in the yard. You were amazing." Soren steps forward, his hands gripping the footboard of the cot, his eyes wide with raw awe.

I let out a bitter, coughing laugh that rips at my fresh stitches. I taste the phantom copper of my own blood in the back of my throat. I stare up at the wooden rafters, my chest rising and falling in shallow, painful increments.

"Amazing? Caius clearly didn't think so."

My father's jaw clenches tight. The shadows in the small infirmary room carve deep, angry lines into his weathered face. He steps up to the side of the bed and rests a large, grounding hand on my shoulder.

"Caius doesn't see things right where you are concerned. But the pack knows. They recognize your bravery out there today."

I want to soak in his reassurance, but my mind replays the cruelest memory of all. I see the feral rogue's claws flashing in the sunlight. I feel my blood spilling out onto the dirt of the training yard, seeping into the earth. And above all the chaos, I see Caius standing like a shield over Zara. I see his glowing golden eyes sliding right past my broken, bleeding body as if I were nothing but trash left in the mud. He saved me, only to immediately abandon me.

An older woman steps into my line of sight, wiping her wrinkled hands on a stained linen apron.

"The deep wound won't leave a lasting scar. Her skin will heal fine with a few more days of bed rest." The healer nods at my mother, attempting a comforting smile.

My mother lets out a long, shaky breath of relief, but I just turn my head toward the cold wall. The healer is wrong. The physical tear in my side might close, but the emotional ache tearing through my chest runs much deeper than any torn flesh.

By the next evening, the physical fire in my side cools to a dull, constant ache. My mother fusses over me for hours, treating me like spun glass, insisting I stay in bed. Desperate not to appear weak to a pack that thrives on dominance, I wave off her lingering concerns. I wrap a thick, heavy woven shawl around my throbbing ribs, bind my hair back, and force myself to step outside into the cool evening air.

My fragile illusion of safety shatters the moment my boots hit the packed dirt of the main path.

The pack square is buzzing with electric excitement. Torches blaze against the encroaching dusk, casting dancing shadows over the gathered crowd. Whispers carry on the wind, thick with awe and reverence. I follow the collective gaze of the pack and feel the air get knocked right out of my lungs all over again.

Caius strides through the parting crowd. Zara is firmly hooked onto his arm.

She is radiant and smug in a flowing red dress that hugs every curve of her body. Her chin tilts up, basking in the pack's reverent bows and deep curtsies. She looks like a queen claiming her rightful throne, leaning her head against his broad shoulder, projecting a picture of perfect, unbothered power.

"The future Luna."

"They look perfect together."

"Such stronger bloodlines. They will lead us into a new era."

The hushed murmurs twist like jagged daggers in my chest. I had faced the lethal claws and razor-sharp teeth of a feral rogue, I had bled on the training dirt, but nothing has ever hurt like witnessing this. My knees shake beneath my skirt. The urge to flee back to my dark, quiet room is overwhelming.

Before I can take a step in retreat, my father steps up behind me. His large hand lands steadily on my trembling shoulder, an unyielding anchor in a spinning world.

"Do not let them see you break, Kaia. That is exactly what they want." He warns me softly, his gaze locked coldly on the golden couple in the center of the square.

Swallowing my tears, I force my chin up. I square my shoulders despite the searing pain in my side, hiding how deeply I am crumbling on the inside. I hold my ground, staring straight ahead, refusing to give Zara the satisfaction of seeing me retreat.

Later that night, a heavy, resounding horn sounds through the territory. It is a harsh, guttural blast that rattles the glass in the windows and vibrates deep in my marrow.

Caius summons the entire pack to the great hall.

I file inside with my family, sticking to the edge of the massive stone room. The air feels thick and suffocating with body heat. Torches crackle along the stone walls, illuminating the eager faces of warriors, elders, and young pups.

Caius stands at the elevated dais at the front of the hall. He looks tall, imposing, and lethal in his dark leathers. Zara stands right beside him, preening under the torchlight, her posture radiating superiority. Caius raises a single, scarred hand. His presence commands terrified silence. The low murmurs die out in a heartbeat.

"The Annual Hunt begins tomorrow at dawn." His deep voice booms across the hall, leaving no room for argument or hesitation.

Cheers and primal, chest-deep growls erupt from the males around the room. They pound their fists against their chests and howl up at the arched ceiling, their eyes flashing with predator instincts.

My stomach twists into a hard knot. I grip the frayed edge of my shawl, my knuckles turning stark white.

The Hunt is a savage, archaic tradition. On the surface, the pack claims it is a time where warriors track rogues through the deep forest for glory, honor, and rank. But everyone knows it harbors a much darker, sicker purpose. It is a legalized excuse to hunt down the unwanted, unmated, and rejected females of the pack. If caught by the visiting males from neighboring territories, we face forced, suffering mating bonds or death. Surviving the night means proving our ultimate worth. It means escaping the clutches of feral, eager males who see us as nothing more than prizes to be claimed and broken.

Caius’s golden eyes sweep the crowded hall. The cheering subsides as he steps closer to the edge of the dais. His gaze travels over the sea of faces before landing on me.

The air leaves my lungs. His stare is heavy. There is no warmth, no pity, and no remorse in those bright irises. He looks at me with cold, heavy expectation.

"Every unmated, rejected, and widowed female is required to join. It is not optional." He declares, never breaking eye contact with me, his voice carrying an undeniable finality.

A collective gasp ripples through the women in the room. Zara’s smirk widens into a vicious, triumphant grin. Malicious whispers swirl around me, carried by the wolves who have always wanted to see me fall.

"She will never survive in her condition."

"The rogues nearly killed her yesterday. The hunters will finish the job tomorrow."

"She is weak. She will be claimed or killed before noon."

When the gathering finally disperses, leaving a trail of tense, predatory energy in its wake, my panicked parents rush me out of the hall and back into the quiet shelter of our home.

"I will speak to Caius immediately. I will declare you medically unfit to participate. You are still bleeding, Kaia." My father insists fiercely, his hands gripping his heavy coat as he prepares to storm right back out the door to confront the Alpha.

I shake my head, planting my boots firmly on the wooden floorboards. My heart pounds with a terrifying mix of sheer terror and unyielding determination. I look at my father, forcing him to see the resolve hardening in my eyes.

"No. If I sit this out, I will be seen as worthless forever. I have to fight."

"Kaia, you cannot do this. You are not healed. The males out there will show no mercy." My mother cries, stepping forward to grab my icy hands in hers.

"I have to." I whisper, my voice cracking under the weight of my own terrifying choice.

They stare at me in stunned, helpless silence. They know the brutal laws of the pack just as well as I do. If I hide behind a medical exemption, I am weak. If I run from the tradition, I am an outcast forever. My only choice is to step into the woods and survive the nightmare.

Laying in bed that night, the pale moonlight bathes my small room in silver. The shadows stretch long and thin across the wooden floor. Under my thin blanket, my side pulses in painful, throbbing rhythm with my heartbeat. Every breath is a stark reminder of the physical damage I carry.

*We may be weak now, but we are not broken.*

The voice of my wolf, Nymira, whispers clear and true in my mind. Her presence is a dim spark in the endless dark, a steadying force against the rising panic in my chest.

I grip my thin blanket in my fists. I stare up at the ceiling, listening to the distant sounds of the pack preparing for dawn. I know tomorrow will bring more blood. I know it will bring the chase. I know it will bring a kind of pain I cannot even begin to fathom. The visiting males will be ruthless. They will hunt for sport, for dominance, and for breeding rights. I am bruised, stitched, and bleeding, but I am still breathing.

As I drift into a restless, feverish sleep, the image of Caius and Zara flashes behind my closed eyelids. The memory of his cold, uncaring stare fuels the tiny, flickering flame in my chest. One single thought echoes louder than my fear, louder than the aching throb of my torn flesh.

I will not break.
