A Resounding Slap

The sharp, crisp crack of flesh meeting flesh rang out, bouncing off the vaulted ceilings and imported marble walls of the Kensington grand living room. The sound was deafening in the vast space, hanging in the air like a physical weight.

Valerie lowered her arm, her breathing slow and measured. Years of relentless physical training and bitter survival on the streets had honed her reflexes to a razor's edge. She knew exactly how to channel her strength, how to ground her stance, and how to strike with supreme, calculated force. She had aimed with pinpoint precision.

Chloe’s delicate cheek swelled instantly. The pristine, pale skin blossomed into an angry, bruised red that mirrored the exact shape of Valerie’s palm, rising quickly until it looked like a puffed, steamed bun.

The sheer speed and ferocity of the strike left the entire room frozen in a breathless stupor. No one moved. No one spoke. For a fleeting second, the opulent living room felt like a paused frame in a movie. Valerie stood in the center of it all, her posture relaxed, her dark eyes looking down at her own wrist as if brushing off invisible dust.

Eleanor broke the spell. She let out a shrill, distressed gasp and dropped to her knees beside the plush sofa, throwing her arms around the weeping girl. Her hands fluttered frantically over Chloe’s hair, her shoulders, and her trembling back, desperate to inspect the damage without causing more pain. She turned her head toward the hallway, her voice frantic and high-pitched as she commanded the household servants to fetch an ice pack right this second.

Richard snapped out of his daze at the sound of his wife’s panicked orders. He glanced at Chloe’s ruined, swollen face, the muscles in his jaw tightening into hard knots. Slowly, he turned his head and locked his gaze on Valerie. A dark, dangerous glint flared in his eyes. The patriarch of the Kensington family was a man accustomed to unquestioned authority, and he stared at his biological daughter with a wrathful intensity.

Bryce was the last to process the scene. The pampered youngest son, used to endless devotion from his peers and indulgence from his family, stared blankly at his adopted sister’s tears. Then, a raw, unbridled fury ignited within his chest. In his privileged world, there were no boundaries, no rules against striking women, and certainly no mercy for anyone who dared to upset his precious Chloe. Because of his wealthy background and handsome face, he walked through life arrogant and unchecked. He considered himself Chloe’s eternal knight, swearing to protect her from any slight. Seeing her hurt crossed an unforgivable line. He lunged across the pristine Persian rug, charging at Valerie like an enraged lion aiming to tear her apart.

"You are courting death!"

Valerie did not flinch, nor did she retreat. She simply raised her hand. Her slender fingers clamped down on Bryce's incoming wrist like a vice of solid steel. The abrupt halt sent a shockwave up Bryce’s arm. He struggled, his muscles straining against her hold, but he could not break free from her iron grip. The thin, unassuming woman held the raging teenager perfectly in place.

Bryce scowled, raising his head to glare venomously into her eyes. It was the very first time he truly looked at this stranger who claimed to be his flesh and blood. He had never cared about the arrival of another sibling. The Kensington wealth was vast enough to feed an army, so adding one more person to the manor meant nothing to him. But as his eyes traced the delicate arch of Valerie’s eyebrows and the proud slope of her nose up close, a jarring sense of familiarity hit him. She looked exceptionally similar to Eleanor in her youth.

That striking resemblance pierced through his raging momentum. Seeing his mother's features reflected in the woman he was trying to attack touched a soft spot deep in his heart. The blind, explosive anger that drove him forward began to dissipate, leaving behind a cold, guarded stare.

"Let go."

Valerie held his gaze with chilling indifference. She gave his trapped wrist a sharp, precise twist, shoving him backward with effortless grace. Bryce stumbled, catching his balance just before crashing into the glass coffee table.

Richard stepped forward, his imposing presence demanding immediate obedience. He had watched the brief, volatile scuffle in silence, only choosing to intervene now that his son had been physically subdued and pushed aside.

"Why did you hit Chloe?"

Valerie dusted her fingertips together, lifting her chin to meet her father’s furious stare. The corners of her lips curled upward, forming a slow, breathtaking smile. It was the very first time she had smiled since stepping foot into the Kensington manor. Against her sun-kissed skin and aloof, tranquil demeanor, the expression was striking. Tiny dimples appeared on her cheeks, adding a deceptive touch of innocence to her gorgeous face. Yet, the warmth of the smile never reached her deep, pool-like eyes. It was a razor-sharp, heavily mocking expression.

"I did not want to hit her. My hand just took the liberty of doing it. It has nothing to do with me. Besides, she is okay. She is not dead. Since we are a family, let us just forget about this matter."

The words hung in the tense air, a flawless, deliberate mirror of the very excuses Richard and Eleanor had used to dismiss her assault just moments prior. She threw their grotesque hypocrisy right back into their faces, word for word.

Richard’s face flushed a deep, enraged purple. He pointed a trembling finger at her, drawing a sharp breath to unleash a torrent of reprimands.

"Dad, please do not be angry! It is all my fault. I made a terrible decision and almost hurt Valerie. She should beat me to vent her anger."

Chloe’s timid, weeping voice cut through the heavy tension. She huddled against Eleanor, her watery eyes wide and brimming with calculated remorse. She played the tragic, self-sacrificing victim with flawless execution, shifting her pitiful, tear-soaked gaze toward Valerie.

"Valerie, I am so sorry. I know I was wrong. I was terrified that Mom and Dad would stop loving me after you came back, and that you would take my place. I have been an orphan since I was a little girl, and I finally found such a wonderful father and mother. I could not bear the thought of losing them again. I did not want to truly harm you that day. I just wanted to scare you and drive you away so Grandpa would stop looking for you. It is all my fault. It is my fault."

Chloe lowered her head, letting large, dramatic tears spill down her cheeks and onto her designer dress. She shook with quiet, pathetic sobs, presenting a picture of utter devastation.

"Please, Valerie, slap me again to vent your anger."

Eleanor pulled the sobbing girl tighter into her chest, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears. Her heart shattered at the sight of her darling child in such severe distress.

"Chloe, what nonsense are you talking about? It is not your fault at all. You were just scared. It was that bad guy who made his own decision to do those horrible things."

Eleanor gently stroked Chloe’s back, whispering soft affirmations until the girl’s cries reduced to soft, fragile sniffles. Only then did the matriarch turn her attention back to the biological daughter standing alone in the center of the room.

Eleanor carefully examined the young woman in front of her. Her sharp, discerning eyes traced Valerie’s features. Beneath the aloof exterior and the mocking smile, she saw the undeniable slope of her own brow and the exact shape of her own jawline. A heavy, undeniable realization settled over her. This was truly her flesh and blood, the baby girl she had lost eighteen years ago.

Her gaze drifted downward, taking in the cheap, faded fabric of Valerie’s unbranded clothing. Then, she looked at Valerie’s hands hanging loosely at her sides. Those hands told a brutal, unrelenting story. The knuckles were dry, the skin rough and weathered by the elements. Thick callouses coated the pads of her fingers. They were the hands of a laborer, someone who had endured grueling, menial work just to survive another day.

Eleanor instinctively glanced at the delicate hands clinging tightly to her silk blouse. Chloe’s fingers were pristine, slender, and incredibly soft, having never known a single day of hard labor or deprivation in her privileged life. The stark, painful contrast hit Eleanor like a physical blow. A sudden pang of maternal guilt constricted her chest. The harsh reality of the severe hardships her biological daughter had suffered crashed over her, leaving a bitter, agonizing taste in her mouth. Her throat tightened, raw and burning as if she had swallowed a handful of dry sand.

"Valerie?"

The single word carried a fragile, trembling weight. For a split second, a bridge of genuine maternal connection seemed to form across the vast, cold living room.

Chloe stiffened in Eleanor’s arms. Her sharp instincts immediately detected the dangerous shift in the emotional tide. She recognized the guilt blossoming in her adoptive mother’s eyes. She pressed her bruised cheek against Eleanor’s shoulder and let out a breathless, agonizing whimper.

"Mom, my face hurts so much."

The fragile bridge shattered into dust.

Eleanor’s head whipped back to Chloe. The fleeting moment of pity she felt for Valerie vanished into thin air. It was instantly replaced by a fierce, overwhelming urge to protect the fragile girl she had raised, pampered, and loved for over a decade. She cradled Chloe’s face with extreme care, her eyes brimming with deep sorrow as she inspected the swollen, red skin.

After murmuring more gentle reassurances to her adopted daughter, Eleanor finally looked up at Valerie once more. The maternal warmth was gone, replaced by a soft but unyielding resolve to shield Chloe at all costs. She harbored no desire to reprimand Valerie, knowing full well that Chloe was the one who initiated the disaster. But Chloe was the one currently crying in pain, and in Eleanor's heart, that was all that truly mattered.

"Valerie? Can I call you Valerie?"

Valerie stared at her, maintaining a heavy, stoic silence. She did not offer a single nod or sound of confirmation, merely watching the woman who birthed her.

"Chloe was at fault for this matter. Although it did not cause serious consequences, her behavior is unacceptable, and I will talk to her later. However, since you are okay and have already slapped her to vent your anger, you must forgive her now."

Eleanor spoke the words with gentle authority. Every single syllable was carefully crafted and chosen to construct an impenetrable shield around her adopted daughter.

Valerie stood perfectly still, fixing her dark, tranquil gaze on Eleanor. The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Deep within her mind, fragments of a lost childhood flickered to life. She had been taken when she was only five years old. The trauma and the grueling years on the streets had buried most of her early memories, turning them into hazy, untouchable dreams.

But there was one memory she had never let go of. In the darkest corners of her past, there was a woman with a pair of beautiful, gentle eyes. That woman used to look at her with boundless warmth, brushing her hair and speaking in a voice like velvet.

*You are my favorite little princess.*

The phrase echoed in her mind, a ghost from a life she no longer lived. Valerie looked at the elegant woman kneeling on the floor, holding another girl in her arms. She finally recognized those beautiful eyes. They were the exact same eyes from her memory.

A hollow, agonizing ache bloomed in Valerie’s chest. The realization was stark and unrelenting. The little princess that the owner of those eyes loved the most was no longer her.
