A Bitter Homecoming
A sharp, unexpected clatter from the floor below shattered the silence of the bedroom. Valerie opened her eyes in the dark. Years of living alone on edge had made her an incredibly light sleeper. The slightest shift in the atmosphere was enough to pull her from the deepest rest.
She blinked, her vision adjusting to the moonlight filtering through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. The shadows stretching across the room did not belong to the cramped, modest house she had bought in the suburbs. The silk sheets slipping off her shoulders and the opulent, vaulted ceiling above her served as a quiet reminder of her new reality.
She was inside the Kensington mansion.
A quiet flutter of warmth stirred in her chest. She sat up, letting the luxurious fabric pool at her waist. For eighteen years, she had fought tooth and nail to survive in a world that demanded everything and offered nothing in return. She was no longer a stray. She was the rightful daughter of the Kensington family. She had a father and a mother under this very roof.
Valerie slid out of bed and dressed in the dim light. She pushed her bedroom door open and stepped out into the expansive hallway.
The spiral staircase sweeping down to the main floor was lined with a plush, thick carpet. She padded softly down the steps, making no sound. With each descending step, the muffled noises from the living room grew sharper and more distinct. She slowed her pace, expecting to walk into a quiet family discussion.
Instead, a chilling scene unfolded before her.
In the center of the vast, glittering living room stood a well-groomed middle-aged man and an elegant woman—her biological parents, Richard and Eleanor. Beside them stood a tall teenage boy. All three of them hovered over a delicate girl weeping on the velvet sofa, their postures bending in unison to offer comfort.
"Chloe, don't cry. It is no big deal. Please do not cry, or your eyes are going to get swollen, and it will not look good," Eleanor cooed, her hand gently stroking the crying girl’s hair.
Richard patted the girl’s shoulder. "It is not a big deal. We are a family. She will not do something to you, and besides, you did not mean to do it."
The teenage boy crossed his arms, his voice laced with annoyance on Chloe’s behalf. "That is it. Chloe, stop crying. Isn't Valerie okay? She is not dead!"
Valerie stopped dead on the stairs. The soft anticipation that had warmed her chest just moments ago turned into jagged ice. She stood in the shadows, her grip tightening on the mahogany banister. They were comforting the mastermind who had tried to destroy her life.
Just days before her grandfather, Arthur Kensington, brought her back to this mansion, Valerie had narrowly escaped a nightmare. Her life as a scientific researcher meant endless, exhausting hours in the laboratory. She made a habit of ordering late-night takeout from a small Mom-and-Pop restaurant near her house. A steaming bowl of pasta had always been her sole comfort in the lonely, dark hours of the morning.
On that specific night, she unlocked her front door and waited for the familiar older couple to deliver her food. When the knock came, she opened the door to find a strange, heavy-set man standing on her porch.
Before Valerie could question him, the man shoved his weight against the door, sending the takeout crashing to the floor. He forced her backward into the narrow hallway and slammed the door shut, locking the deadbolt.
He did not want money. The man kicked the spilled food aside and yanked at his belt. He pulled down his pants, exposing his erect penis in the dim light of the entryway. He lunged forward, intending to pin her down, rape her on the floorboards, and take the degrading nude photographs he had been paid to capture.
He underestimated her. Valerie maintained a strict workout regimen and possessed lightning-fast reflexes. As he threw his weight forward, she dropped her shoulder and pivoted out of his path. The man stumbled, his hands grasping empty air. Valerie spun around, grabbed the aluminum baseball bat resting near the umbrella stand, and swung it hard against the back of his neck.
The heavy thud echoed in the hall as the man collapsed. She dragged his unconscious body to a chair, bound his wrists and ankles with extension cords, and waited for him to wake up. She lit a scented candle, sat across from him, and interrogated him under the threat of calling the police. The truth he spilled was a poison she had not expected.
Chloe Kensington, the cherished adopted daughter of the Kensington family, had hired him. She paid him to rape Valerie and ruin her reputation with explicit photos.
Valerie had never even met Chloe at that point. When Arthur Kensington finally tracked Valerie down and brought her to the mansion, Valerie threw the attacker’s written confession directly at Chloe’s feet. Richard and Eleanor had been away on a business trip, so Arthur mandated that the family wait for their return to handle the situation.
Now, they were back. And their solution was to coddle the perpetrator.
The sound of liquid splashing pulled Valerie from the grim memory.
A torrent of icy water flew toward her face. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up. She ducked sideways, the freezing water missing her eyes but drenching her shoulder and the side of her shirt.
Bryce Kensington stood at the bottom of the staircase, an empty crystal glass in his hand. Frustration flashed across his handsome features upon seeing that his liquid assault had missed its mark. He gripped the heavy crystal glass and hurled it straight at Valerie’s head, aiming directly to shatter her eyes and blind her.
Valerie scrambled backward up the steps to dodge the incoming projectile. The heavy glass smashed against the wall behind her, sending sharp shards raining onto the carpet. In her haste to avoid the impact, her foot slipped. Her ankle twisted and slammed against the hard, unyielding wooden lip of the stair.
A sharp gasp escaped her lips. Pain shot up her leg, forcing her to lean over and clutch her injured ankle.
Bryce smirked, clearly satisfied with the result. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked up at her with undisguised contempt.
"You are Valerie? Why don't you talk, dumb!" Bryce sneered.
Valerie gritted her teeth and raised her head to look at the robust teenager. She recognized him from the family photographs Arthur had shown her. This was Bryce, the youngest son of the Kensington family. Her biological younger brother.
Her eyes stung. She blinked rapidly, forcing back the burning moisture, and with it, she crushed the last lingering shreds of hope she held for this so-called family.
Annoyed by her silence, Bryce marched up the first few steps. He reached his hand out, intending to grab a fistful of Valerie’s hair and force her to look down at him.
"Stop!"
A booming, authoritative voice echoed from the upper landing, followed by the heavy, rhythmic stomp of a wooden crutch.
Bryce flinched. He dropped his hand, scrambled down the stairs, and stood at attention at the bottom, mimicking the posture of an innocent child.
Arthur Kensington glared down from the top of the stairs, his chest heaving with anger. "How can you hit your sister!"
The moment the old man raised his voice, Richard and Eleanor rushed over to shield Bryce.
"Dad, Bryce is still young. He did not mean to do it," Richard pleaded, standing in front of his son.
Eleanor placed a protective hand on Bryce’s arm and looked up at Arthur. "Bryce just feels sorry for Chloe. He has a short temper, but he has no bad intentions."
Valerie sat on the stairs, massaging her throbbing ankle. When Bryce hurled a glass at her head, Richard and Eleanor had stood in the living room watching in silence. They had permitted the violence against their own flesh and blood. Yet the moment Arthur scolded him, they scrambled in a panic to justify the boy's actions.
She stared at the unified front standing below her. The sharp, pulsating pain in her leg was fierce, but the hollow, aching void in her chest felt infinitely worse.
Arthur did not back down. He cast a dark, condemning look at Eleanor before turning his attention to the crying girl on the sofa.
"Do you know that Chloe had someone to rape Valerie?" Arthur demanded, his voice ringing through the massive room.
Richard stepped forward, blocking Arthur's line of sight to Chloe. "Dad. Isn't Valerie okay? Valerie is fine. Since everything is fine and we are a family, let us forget about it."
Eleanor nodded in quick agreement. "Chloe was scared and crying. She did not really want to hurt Valerie. She just had someone to scare Valerie. It was the evil man who made his own decision to rape Valerie."
Arthur scoffed, slamming his crutch against the floor again. "Scare Valerie? Even if you attempt to kill someone, you will be sentenced."
The implication hung heavy in the air. Arthur intended to see Chloe punished.
Fear flashed across Eleanor’s face. Unwilling to argue with the intimidating patriarch, she turned her gaze up the stairs to Valerie.
"Valerie, you are okay anyway. Why bother with it? Chloe is so frightened."
Valerie froze. She locked eyes with Eleanor. This was the very first sentence her biological mother had chosen to speak to her.
Having a mother was supposed to be a source of comfort. This reality was suffocating, bitter, and sickening.
Richard narrowed his eyes at his eldest daughter, adding his own layer of pressure. "Valerie, you will be a member of the Kensington family in the future. You do not want to make everyone unhappy, right? If you are a thoughtful girl, forgive Chloe."
The veiled threat echoed in Valerie’s ears. If she refused to forgive the girl who orchestrated her rape, she would be labeled as unthoughtful and unreasonable. She would be the villain in their perfect home.
Valerie let go of her injured ankle. She pushed herself up off the stairs, ignoring the sharp sting radiating through her leg, and walked down into the living room.
She bypassed Richard, Eleanor, and Bryce, stopping directly in front of the sofa.
Chloe peered up at her. She batted her big, watery eyes, looking like a fragile, innocent doll. "I am sorry. Can you forgive me?"
Valerie looked down at the pathetic display. The corners of her mouth twitched, curving up into a slow, mocking smile.
She raised her hand, channeled every ounce of her strength into her palm, and delivered a deafening, bone-rattling slap directly across Chloe’s cheek.
"Okay, I'll forgive you!"
