The Price of Forgiveness
Faced with Eleanor’s soft, pleading gaze, Valerie finally yielded. She lived her life by a strict, unbreakable code: repay kindness with genuine gratitude, and strike back fiercely against those who wronged her. If she truly intended to sever all ties with the Kensington family and permanently ruin Chloe, she would have marched straight down to the police station without a second thought. The simple fact that she deliberately withheld that critical evidence meant she had left the door wide open for reconciliation. If they had simply offered a genuine apology, she would have accepted it. Instead, they chose to weaponize their hierarchical family authority to brutally bully her into submission.
Valerie lowered her eyes. They looked at her and saw a helpless orphan with no background and no powerful backers to defend her. They assumed she was an easy target. In her twenty-odd years of life, she rarely found herself at a disadvantage. Whenever she retreated, it was a tactical choice, never out of weakness. She expected better from a prominent household like the Kensingtons. When the pampered, privileged daughter of the house committed a literal crime against her, the parents did not step forward to make proper amends. They sent their teenage son to throw fists and spit threats. Their methods were crude. The irony twisted in Valerie’s chest. The victim standing before them was their own flesh and blood. They casually used their authority as elders to corner her, conveniently forgetting they had never fulfilled a single day of their parental duties to raise her. The very people who should have stood by her side were exploiting her lack of support. It deeply amused and sickened her at the same time.
Valerie walked toward the center of the living room. She took a seat on the plush sofa, resting her chin on one hand, and fixed her dark eyes on the people crowding the space. "I can forgive her."
A collective exhale swept through the room. The suffocating tension evaporated in an instant.
Valerie spoke the words with clinical detachment. "I have a condition, though."
The brief relief vanished. The Kensington family braced themselves.
Bryce stepped forward, his breathing heavy and his fists still tightly clenched. "What is the condition?"
Valerie let her gaze drift over him before locking eyes with the sobbing girl in Eleanor’s arms. "An eye for an eye. I will hire someone to scare her, just like she did to me. Do not worry. I will not actually harm her. I merely want to scare her."
Richard roared. "You are insane!" The veins in his neck bulged as he glared at his biological daughter.
Eleanor tightened her protective grip on Chloe, her expression filling with profound, maternal disappointment. "It is wrong to fight violence with violence, Valerie."
Bryce’s face flushed a deep, unhinged crimson. The remaining threads of his self-control snapped. He pointed a trembling, furious finger right at Valerie’s face. "If you dare to touch Chloe, I will kill you!"
Valerie remained motionless on the sofa. She did not flinch at the booming threats or the hostility radiating from her own family. She merely offered a faint smile and looked fixedly at the enraged crowd.
Richard and Eleanor furrowed their brows, unnerved by her strange calm. "What are you looking at?"
Valerie murmured the words softly. "I just wanted to feel it."
Bryce scowled, confusion cutting through his blind rage. "Feel what?"
Valerie kept her voice level, letting the weight of her statement settle over the room. "I wanted to feel what it is like to be fiercely protected by my parents. I figured that if my biological parents saw me being cornered and bullied, they would react exactly like this."
The profound truth hit Eleanor and Richard like a physical blow. The three angry figures froze in their tracks. A suffocating, deeply ashamed silence engulfed the vast living room. The fiery protective instincts they had just unleashed for Chloe now stood as glaring, undeniable proof of their utter failure toward Valerie. They had rushed to defend the aggressor while blindly abandoning the victim they had birthed.
Upstairs, Arthur leaned heavily on his thick wooden cane. He had stood on the balcony, watching the entire spectacle unfold with cold, simmering fury. He let out a long, heavy sigh and began his slow descent down the grand staircase. The rhythmic thud of his cane against the marble steps echoed in the dead silent room.
Arthur bypassed his stunned son and daughter-in-law without a single glance, stepping directly into the center of the living room. He settled into the main armchair. His sharp eyes darted between the two girls.
Arthur issued the command to the waiting butler. "Send Miss Valerie back to her room to rest."
Valerie stood up without a word and followed the servant out of the tense space.
Once she disappeared down the hallway, Arthur turned his stern gaze toward the girl shrinking in Eleanor’s embrace. "Send Miss Chloe back to her room."
The deliberate shift in titles hung in the air. The exclusive, undisputed status of the sole Kensington heiress was brutally stripped away in a single, calm sentence. Chloe was no longer the only Miss Kensington. She was simply Miss Chloe.
Chloe’s face turned pale. Panic flashed in her tearful eyes, and she looked up at Eleanor, silently begging for intervention.
Eleanor could not find a single word to defend her adopted daughter. The haunting echo of Valerie’s voice looped endlessly in her mind. *If my biological parents saw me being bullied...* Eleanor’s chest tightened with sudden, immense guilt. She realized she had used her authority as a mother to corner the child she had spent eighteen years mourning.
The exact moment the servants escorted the girls away, Arthur gripped his heavy wooden cane with both hands and brought it down brutally on Richard’s back.
Richard flinched sharply from the sudden impact but did not dare to evade the strike.
Arthur’s wrinkled face turned a dangerous shade of crimson as he roared furiously at his son. "What are you doing, you fool! You are in your fifties! Is this how a man conducts himself? Systematically coercing your long-lost daughter the very moment she steps foot in this house?"
Richard kept his head bowed, swallowing the pain in silence.
Breathing heavily, the old man finally lowered the cane and shifted his furious gaze to Eleanor. He could not strike his daughter-in-law, but his words were meant to cut just as deep.
Arthur leaned heavily on his cane. "Do you know what Valerie told me before all this nonsense began?"
Eleanor lowered her gaze, her fingers trembling against her dress.
Arthur let out a ragged breath. "She never intended to pursue Chloe’s fault. You are smart people. Your children are adults. Use your heads! If that girl genuinely wanted to destroy this family, would she still be standing here negotiating? The police would already have the written confession! She held back because she yearned for a family. She respected you. And you repaid her mercy with sheer cruelty!"
Arthur pointed an accusatory finger at his son and daughter-in-law. "She spent eighteen years surviving alone on the streets. No parents. No brothers. No backing. She must have dreamed of coming home to a family that would cherish her. Look at what you have done to her!"
The grandfather then whipped his attention toward the teenager standing near the sofa. He aimed his heavy cane at Bryce. "And you! What exactly were you doing? She is your blood sister. You have no right to lay a hand on a stranger, let alone your own flesh and blood."
Bryce set his jaw, a stubborn glint of defiance lingering in his eyes.
Arthur saw the boy’s unyielding pride and decided to shatter it. "You think she could not beat you? She is an orphan who had to fight tooth and nail on the streets just to survive every single day of her life. Her body is tempered by real combat, not that useless showmanship you practice in your air-conditioned gym. She subdued a grown, hardened criminal single-handedly. You think she could not snap you in half if she truly wanted to?"
Arthur stepped closer, jabbing his finger in Bryce’s direction. "Look me in the eye and tell me! Why did she not hit you back? Why did she not beat you to the ground?"
Bryce’s expression fractured. The realization struck him with brutal force. Valerie had not backed down out of fear. She had shown him mercy. She chose not to humiliate him.
Overwhelmed by conflicting guilt and a severely bruised ego, the teenager’s eyes turned red. Unable to process the shame welling up inside him, Bryce roared in denial. "I never asked her to do that!"
He spun on his heel and fled the house.
Arthur watched his grandson run away, leaving the heavy weight of remorse to suffocate Richard and Eleanor. Seizing the moment, the old man issued his decree.
Arthur announced his decision with ironclad authority. "I will hold a grand welcome dinner for Valerie in half a month."
It was an undeniably necessary political move. The true, biological daughter of the Kensington family had finally returned, and her status needed to be officially established in their social circle. Richard and Eleanor nodded in obedient agreement, neither daring to utter a word of protest.
But Arthur was far from finished. His final, shocking declaration rooted both of them to the floor in pure horror. "Since Valerie has returned, the company shares that rightfully belong to her will be transferred to her name immediately."
Richard lifted his head and stared at his father in pure, unadulterated disbelief. "What about Chloe’s shares?"
Arthur planted his cane firmly on the floor. He looked at his son with a cold, meaningful stare that chilled the room. "Chloe is not the blood of the Kensington family."
Richard stood frozen in place, left speechless.
