Simmering Jealousy

The heavy oak door clicked shut, instantly muffling the suffocating tension radiating from Room 102. Chiara leaned her back against the cool hallway wallpaper. She pressed a trembling palm over her racing heart and sucked in a deep gulp of clean air. Her chest heaved as she fought to steady her erratic breathing, still feeling the lingering weight of Dario's intimidating stare burning into her back before the door had closed.

Vince stood beside her on the patterned carpet. He adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket and looked down with a gentle, concerned gaze. "How are things going? You look like you just went a dozen rounds in a boxing ring."

Chiara let out a long, shaky breath and dropped her hand to her side. "Thank you for intervening in there, Vince. If you had not shown up to be my sudden escape route, I really do not know what I would have done. The situation was turning disastrous."

Vince tilted his head. He studied the thin layer of sweat slicking her forehead and the lingering panic in her eyes. "It seems like you already know my uncle."

Chiara swallowed hard. She deliberately pushed down the terrifying memory of her first encounter with Dario Romano. She could still feel the phantom grip of his dominance, but she locked that secret away. "I just had a terrible conversation with him prior to your arrival. I did not want any trouble following me around. Having no other way out, I selfishly used you as a fake boyfriend. I am so sorry for dragging you into this mess."

Vince offered a polite, casual smile. He waved a hand to brush off her guilt. "It is no trouble at all. You do not need to apologize. My uncle is aloof and difficult to govern. He has a volatile temper, and nobody dares to misbehave in his presence. I recognize your discomfort, so please do not be alarmed."

Chiara let out a breathless laugh. The mere thought of that arrogant mafia boss made her skin crawl with disgust. "Unlike your uncle, you are sweet. Nobody could ever claim you two are linked by blood based on temperament. It is like day and night."

Vince chuckled softly. "We are not really alike."

A wave of comfort washed over Chiara. Knowing she would never have to cross paths with that imposing, terrifying man again felt like a heavy chain snapping off her chest. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Vince in a warm goodbye hug.

"I have to get going. It was really good to see you again," Chiara murmured against his shoulder.

"The feeling is mutual. Take care, Chiara," Vince replied.

He stood in the bright hallway and watched her walk toward the elevators. Once the metal doors slid shut and carried her away, Vince turned around. He grabbed the brass handle and pushed the door to Room 102 open.

The dark aura hit Vince the second he stepped back into the chamber. The air felt colder. Dario stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. His broad frame blocked out the twinkling city lights. He swirled a glass of strong whiskey over ice, his shoulders tight with simmering rage. The ice clinked against the crystal, sounding like shattered glass in the dead silence of the suite.

Dario glared out at the skyline, refusing to turn around. The reflection of the neon lights danced across his sharp, hardened features. "When exactly do you plan to introduce this supposed girlfriend to the rest of the Romano family?"

Vince rubbed the back of his neck and let out an awkward, nervous laugh. He strolled further into the room, trying to lighten the crushing mood. "Neither of us currently plans to do so. We are just keeping things casual right now."

Dario scoffed loudly. The sound dripped with pure contempt. He turned around and slammed the heavy crystal glass down onto a side table. "Do you honestly believe she is qualified to date a Romano? Look at her. She is far too average and plain compared to the high-fashion models you usually parade around."

Vince blinked in surprise. His uncle never took an interest in his personal life, let alone fixated on a specific woman with such intense scrutiny.

"She is stunning, Uncle. Half the men in my college chased after her," Vince stated firmly. He flashed a bold, teasing grin at the brooding mafia boss. "Do not worry about my choices. You will only understand these feelings when you finally start liking someone yourself."

The casual quip sliced right through the air. Dario stiffened. A raw, sensitive nerve snapped behind his dark eyes. His jaw locked tightly, muscles feathering along his cheek as he clenched his teeth. He stepped away from the window. A steely, lethal glare locked onto Vince, accompanied by a devilish, cruel grin that sent shivers down the younger man's spine.

"I will visit your father's company tomorrow as you previously requested," Dario stated in a low, gravelly tone. "However, my mood is now ruined, and I require a fee for this inconvenience. Send exactly one million dollars to my account by tomorrow morning."

Vince froze in place. The blood drained from his face, turning his skin ashen. "Uncle, that is an exorbitant amount."

Dario narrowed his eyes, the dark jealousy masked behind a wall of ruthless extortion. "Consider it a punishing fee. Have the money transferred before dawn."

Vince stood rooted to the carpet. He was terrified by the sudden extortion. He knew better than to argue with the ruthless godfather of the underworld. The devil always demanded his payment, and Vince had just handed him a reason to collect.

Meanwhile, Chiara dragged her exhausted body through the front door of Gemma's apartment. The quiet hum of the refrigerator greeted her. She kicked off her heels and tiptoed into the dim living room. The sight before her instantly melted the lingering anxiety from the hotel encounter. Her young son, Matteo, was curled up into a small ball on the worn fabric couch. Gemma sprawled beside him, deep asleep with her mouth slightly open.

A fierce surge of maternal love seized Chiara's chest. She dropped her bag on the floor and knelt beside the couch. She brushed a stray curl from Matteo's forehead and showered his warm cheeks in soft, lingering kisses.

Matteo blinked his large eyes open. He rubbed his face and smiled up at her.

"I am so sorry for being gone so long, my sweet boy. I had to get some work done," Chiara whispered. She rested her forehead against his.

Matteo wrapped his tiny arms around her neck. "I am not upset, Momma. Did you eat dinner yet?"

Right on cue, Chiara's starving stomach let out a loud, rumbling complaint.

Gemma jolted awake at the sound. She blinked blearily and stretched her arms above her head with a massive yawn.

"Aunt Gemma, my mother is starving. Please bring her the food I told you to save," Matteo instructed with a stubborn pout.

Gemma chuckled and pushed herself off the couch. "Yes, your majesty. I am heading to the kitchen right now."

Chiara giggled and scooped Matteo into her arms. She carried him to the small dining table. Gemma returned moments later, placing a steaming plate of delicious pasta in front of her. Chiara dug in immediately. The rich tomato sauce and warm carbs felt like heaven after such a disastrous evening. Matteo and Gemma rested their chins on their hands, affectionately watching her savor every single bite.

Gemma picked a grape from a fruit bowl on the table and popped it into her mouth. "So, what are your immediate plans for tomorrow?"

Chiara stopped chewing. She stared solemnly at her half-empty plate. Her sick father rested heavily on her mind. He was relying on her to rebuild their lives. She needed to gather the necessary resources to reclaim everything they had lost to their enemies. Her father had high hopes for her, and she refused to let him down.

"I am looking for immediate work and money," Chiara stated firmly. She set her fork down and met Gemma's gaze. "I will do whatever it takes to build a stable life for us and help my father."

Gemma nodded in understanding. She recognized the desperate fire burning in her friend's eyes. "My manager, Silas, is currently looking to fill a temporary editing position. I can put in a good word for you. It might be the perfect stepping stone."

Chiara bit her lower lip. A heavy wave of hesitation washed over her. "I want to take it, but I have not found a trustworthy daycare for Matteo. I cannot just leave him with strangers on such short notice."

Gemma waved a dismissive hand, a bright smile spreading across her face. "Do not let that stop you. My current writing tasks allow me to work from home. I can easily watch this little troublemaker while I type up my articles."

Matteo grinned and leaned his head comfortably against Chiara's shoulder. He looked perfectly content and safe.

Chiara looked down at her smiling son, then back up at her supportive friend. The last lingering doubts vanished from her mind. Her quiet, unshakeable determination snapped back into place. She had a war to fight for her family's future, and sitting idle in the apartment would not win it.

"I have to go out if I need to gather resources," Chiara declared.
