Sisterly Malice
Chiara stood on the bustling sidewalk, dressed sharply for the crucial job interview arranged by Gemma. She adjusted the collar of her crisp white top and smoothed her hands down the fabric of her black pencil skirt. She wore sensible flat shoes to navigate the concrete city blocks without tripping. The morning air carried the sharp scent of exhaust fumes and roasting coffee from a cafe down the street. She needed this temporary editing position with Silas. She forced down the heavy anxiety of leaving her young son, Matteo, and her injured father behind in the apartment. It felt wrong to step out of their tiny bubble of safety, but she had a war to fight for their future.
She waited patiently at the taxi stand, keeping a watchful eye on the morning traffic. Her phone vibrated in her handbag. The screen lit up with her father's number. She answered the call. His raspy, reassuring voice drifted through the speaker, telling her to breathe and simply do her best. A faint, genuine smile brought a soft glow to her lips as she ended the call. For a brief second, she felt a fragile moment of peace amid the chaotic city noise.
"What a lovely smile, sister! Have you found a new romantic partner to replace Valerio?"
That fragile peace shattered. The sudden sound of a familiar, mocking voice cut through the hum of the street. Chiara’s smile vanished. She turned her head toward the left. Elena approached her on the pavement. Elena wore an expensive designer dress that clung perfectly to her figure. Yet, her sheer arrogance poorly masked a deep-seated, toxic envy. Elena despised Chiara's effortless, natural beauty—the kind of striking features that money could never buy.
Chiara maintained her composure. She took a deliberate step to the side, attempting to distance herself from the venom radiating from her sister. She needed a clear head for her interview.
"It won't fit your fake, white flower persona to pry into someone else's affairs. Save the act, Elena. If you are finished with whatever task brings you here, go back to your car," Chiara replied curtly.
Elena ignored the firm advice. She stepped closer, invading Chiara's personal space. Her voice dropped into a sickeningly sweet tone that made Chiara's skin crawl.
"Why are you avoiding me, sister? I want our sisterhood to bond again. Actually, I am currently taking a pregnancy test. I missed my period. I am so scared after losing my first unborn child," Elena whispered, pressing on to deliver a sudden, crushing psychological blow.
The heavy implication struck like a physical punch to the gut. Elena was expecting Valerio's baby. A massive shockwave of agonizing pain ripped through Chiara's chest. The street sounds faded into a dull ring in her ears. The air vanished from her lungs. She gasped silently. Deep distress pooled in Chiara's brown eyes as she stared at Elena. Her heart broke all over again.
Elena relished the devastation painted across Chiara's face. She delighted in the calculated psychological torture. A vicious grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. The pleasure of witnessing Chiara suffer was delectable.
Elena caught sight of movement in her peripheral vision. Valerio emerged from the nearby cafe, holding a paper cup of coffee in his hand. Elena shifted her manipulative tactics in the blink of an eye. The malicious grin vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer terror and despair.
Elena lunged forward. She grabbed Chiara's wrist, her manicured nails digging into the skin. She began sobbing loudly, projecting her voice for the public to hear.
"I apologize, Chiara! The misery you endured was heartbreaking! Valerio isn't in love with me to begin with! If you want, I can end our relationship! Please, I am begging you, do not hate me and my mother!" Elena cried out hysterically.
Startled by the abrupt theatrical lunacy, Chiara reacted on pure instinct. She swatted Elena's hand away in self-defense, breaking the painful grip.
Just as Chiara pushed her away, Valerio reached them. The coffee cup hit the pavement, splashing dark liquid across the concrete.
Valerio stepped up to fiercely defend Elena. He pulled the sobbing woman behind his broad shoulders and sneered at Chiara in pure disgust.
"How could you possibly make your sister cry? You are acting abusive, Chiara!" Valerio demanded, his face flushed with anger.
Chiara froze. The sheer injustice of the accusation locked her jaw. Curious bystanders at the taxi stand slowed their pace. People stopped walking and pulled out their cell phones. Lenses pointed directly at them, eager to record the dramatic public spectacle. A heavy wave of shame hammered against Chiara's ribcage. The public humiliation burned her skin.
"A toxic person like you should be deeply ashamed of yourself. Your sister is pleading with you for no reason, and you attack her. You can never change!" Valerio declared loudly.
Elena clung tightly to the back of Valerio's shirt. She continued her flawless helpless act, trembling.
"Do not be mad at her, Val. It is me. You are still in love with her. I am merely a barrier to your past love," Elena cried pathetically.
Valerio turned and enveloped the weeping Elena securely in his arms. He held her tight against his chest, shielding her from Chiara's view. He let out a bitter, cutting laugh at the very concept.
"Love? With her? It is hard for me to even think I ever loved her. The very memory is disgusting," Valerio spat the words out, looking at Chiara as if she were dirt under his shoes.
Hot tears threatened to spill down Chiara's cheeks. She fought them back, refusing to let them see her break. She shot Valerio a look of profound, silent regret. She realized the vicious, inescapable trap her sister had perfectly orchestrated. Elena had played the victim flawlessly, and Valerio had fallen for it without a second of hesitation. Trying to defend herself now would only give the recording bystanders more ammunition.
Chiara swallowed her immense grief. She turned away from the devastating scene. A yellow cab pulled up to the stand and idled at the curb. Wordlessly, she reached for the handle, opened the door, and stepped into the arriving cab. She slammed the door shut, cutting off the noise of the street. As the car rolled forward, she escaped the humiliating scene, finally letting her bitter tears fall in the privacy of the backseat.
Behind her on the sidewalk, Elena wailed mock pleas.
"Sister! Sister, please do not go!" Elena shouted, her voice echoing down the block.
Oblivious to the dark manipulation unfolding right under his nose, Valerio comforted Elena. He rubbed her back soothingly, assuring her of his devoted, unwavering love.
"I love you, Elena. You are everything to me. Do not cry over her. She is self-centered and she will never value your generosity," Valerio said vehemently.
Elena buried her face directly against his chest. She expertly masked her nasty glint with fake tears. A malicious, triumphant grin stretched wide across her lips, hidden safely against his expensive shirt. She greedily basked in the blind devotion of the very man who had once found her absolutely revolting. The thrill of victory coursed through her veins.
*Chiara, I will take the lead now,* Elena promised herself silently, her grip tightening on Valerio's shirt. *Your suffering will only worsen.*
