Crossing the Line

A terrible, clawing dread scratched at Chiara's pounding heart. She stared at the towering figure illuminated by the dim hotel lights. Her mind reeled as a chilling realization struck her with the force of a physical blow. *Why does this man resemble my son? He looks like a carbon replica of Matteo. Please, Lord, do not tell me he is connected to my child.* Panic seized her throat, turning her airway dry and tight. The sharp angles of his face, the dark, piercing eyes, the arrogant tilt of his chin—every single feature mirrored the little boy she was raising all alone.

"Dario." The man introduced himself with a smooth, dark drawl.

He shoved his hands into the pockets of his tailored dark trousers. He stood in the center of the luxurious suite, acting relaxed and arrogant. He showed no lingering pain or hesitation. He moved with the fluid grace of an apex predator, a stark contrast to a man she had kneed square in the groin just hours earlier after he kissed her without consent. His imposing frame blocked the faint glow spilling from the balcony windows, casting long, menacing shadows across the velvet sofas.

Chiara tightened her grip on the manila folder until her knuckles turned white. She needed to escape this suffocating room before her trembling legs betrayed her. She lifted her chin, meeting his dark gaze head-on.

"Pardon me. I have arrived in the incorrect room. I only need to hand my friend's file directly to Vince. I am leaving now."

She spun toward the heavy mahogany door, reaching her hand out for the brass deadbolt. A large, scarred hand slammed against the polished wood right beside her head, trapping her in place. The scent of dark tobacco, expensive whiskey, and raw danger washed over her senses.

"No. You are in the proper place." Dario spoke in a deep, vibrating voice.

He leaned down, scrutinizing her from head to toe with unapologetic, predatory interest. His dark eyes roamed over the fabric of her dress. He mapped the curve of her waist, the line of her neck, before snapping his intense gaze back up to her face.

"The file came specifically for me, miss."

Chiara pressed her spine against the cool wood of the door. She forced her words past the sheer terror threatening to break her resolve.

"You are wrong, sir. This document needs to be handed to Vince."

A devilish, arrogant grin split Dario's face, transforming his handsome features into something wicked. He leaned a fraction closer, crowding her personal space.

"Why don't we try kissing one more time? I loved our last encounter."

The sick amusement dancing in his dark eyes shattered Chiara's rising panic, replacing it with a burning, venomous rage. Her survival instincts shifted from terrified flight to brutal fight. She glared at the towering billionaire.

"You are unbelievable. Are your balls no longer in pain from my strike?"

The devilish grin vanished from his handsome face in a rapid flash. Her sharp, unapologetic retort instantly brought out his icy, cruel mafia persona. The temperature in the room plummeted. He took a deliberate step forward, trapping her between his solid body and the heavy door.

"You are very bold, aren't you? You will not have fun bringing up that episode, I assure you." Dario sneered, his gaze turning to pure ice. "You are just another cheap, opportunistic woman aimlessly wandering the hotel halls. You want to climb the corporate ladder by sleeping with wealthy men. State your monetary rate. I will give you a lot more than you deserve."

Hearing this blatant degradation, blinding fury seized Chiara's senses. She refused to cower before a man harboring such a cheap, disgusting mentality. The social stigma of being a single mother haunted her past, and she had spent years dealing with men who thought money bought submission. She shoved her palms hard against his solid chest, creating a fraction of space between them.

"Your statements just insulted me once more! If you make another negative remark, I will show you exactly what I am capable of. I am not your pet." She yelled the words right into his face. Her eyes bulged with raw rage. She shifted her weight, dropping the manila folder onto the plush carpet. "You bastard! I will kill you today!"

Chiara bent her knees and reached down toward her foot. Her fingers wrapped tight around the heel of her sharp stiletto. She prepared to rip the leather shoe off and bury the pointed end straight into his neck if he dared take another step toward her.

A loud, metallic click echoed from the far side of the massive suite. The bathroom door swung wide open. A thick cloud of warm steam rolled out into the tense living area. Vince stepped into the room, rubbing a white towel through his damp hair. He froze mid-motion. His jaw gaped wide as he spotted the explosive, hostile scene unfolding right near the entrance.

Chiara released her grip on the stiletto. She recognized Vince as her one and only avenue of escape from a catastrophic physical confrontation with the towering monster blocking her path. She pushed past Dario without a single second of hesitation. She rushed forward across the room and threw her arms tightly around Vince's neck.

"I missed you!" Chiara declared loudly.

She buried her face against his damp shoulder. Before Vince could process the sudden, frantic embrace or push her away, she murmured a desperate, quiet plea directly into his ear.

"Address me as your girlfriend. Just for this moment, please. I will explain everything to you later."

Vince caught on to her sheer panic. He felt the rapid, terrified thumping of her heart against his chest. He lowered the damp towel and warmly supported her waist, pulling her closer against his side.

"I missed you too, sweetheart." Vince spoke loudly enough for the sound to carry across the spacious suite.

Dario stiffened near the doorway. His dark brows furrowed fiercely as he watched the cuddling pair. A visible wave of irrational, dark jealousy radiated from his broad shoulders. He glared at Vince's hands resting on Chiara's waist, his jaw clenching tight enough to snap bone.

Vince gently separated from the embrace, keeping one arm draped protectively around Chiara's side. He turned his attention toward the brooding man near the door. The chaotic situation took a dizzying, sickening turn.

"Uncle. This is my girlfriend, Chiara." Vince gestured between them with a polite, casual smile. He turned his gaze down to Chiara. "Chiara, this is my uncle, Dario Romano."

Chiara choked on a sharp gasp, stunned into profound silence by the horrific revelation. This cold, cruel monster shared blood with the kind, gentle man standing beside her. She felt an overwhelming surge of gratitude that she had played the fake girlfriend card. She hated taking advantage of Vince's pure kindness, but survival required extreme measures.

She narrowed her eyes in pure disgust at the mafia boss. A man like him belonged in the fiery depths of hell. She forced a bright, professional smile onto her face and turned to look at Vince.

"I am only here to cover for my sick colleague Gemma and deliver the file." Chiara made sure her voice rang clear and loud across the suite, purposefully ensuring Dario heard her true, professional purpose for being in his presence. She bent down, scooped the thick document off the carpet, and handed it over to Vince. "Could you please accompany me outside? I am feeling restless. Let us go."

Vince took the manila folder from her hands. He smiled tenderly, perfectly playing along with the protective boyfriend charade.

"I am restless too. Let us go."

Dario watched them move toward the exit. Infuriated for no apparent logical reason by the simple sight of them leaving hand in hand, his demeanor turned frosty and lethal. He stepped forward, his massive frame blocking the dim hallway light once more.

"Remember, I am not staying in town for long." Dario snapped the words harshly at his nephew. His dark, burning eyes remained fixated intensely on Chiara.

Vince wrapped his fingers around the brass doorknob.

"Just a few seconds."

He pulled the heavy door open, holding it wide for Chiara to step through. Just before exiting the suffocating atmosphere of the room, Chiara paused on the threshold. She glanced over her shoulder. She looked directly into Dario's cold, brooding eyes and dramatically rolled her own.

She walked out into the bright, safe hallway. She had successfully shut his arrogant advances down without ever having to swing her sharp heel. Deep satisfaction settled into her chest, fueled by her firm belief that this wicked, arrogant man would not dare consider causing her any further trouble in the future.
