The DAmore Heiress

POV: Dante

The rich scent of freshly brewed espresso mingled with the sweet aroma of warm pastries, hanging heavy in the De Leone dining room. The air felt suffocating. I sat rigid in my high-backed chair, my eyes locked on the farce playing out at the head of our expansive dining table. Cassian poured black coffee into a porcelain cup. My ruthless older brother navigated the silver carafe as if it was a weapon to be handled with care. He set the delicate cup in front of his wife.

Marcello caught my eye across the mahogany expanse. He wore a disgusted grimace. I mirrored his skepticism. The sight of our boss acting like a domesticated servant unsettled my stomach. Cassian was a cold-blooded killer. We grew up bleeding together on the unforgiving streets. He had put bullets through men’s skulls without a second thought. Now he was a man captivated by the woman beside him.

"Do you need something more, mia rosa?" Cassian murmured.

His voice carried a softened edge that made my jaw clench. Carmela offered him a soft smile and shook her head. Cassian brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear and pressed his lips to her temple.

Marcello reached for a piece of bread and shoved it into his mouth. I reached for my dark roast. I needed the bitter taste to wash away the cloying sweetness invading the room.

Marcello smirked. "You look like you chewed on broken glass."

"Maybe I did. It would go down easier than watching this," I shot back.

Cassian finally tore his gaze away from his wife. The domestic illusion vanished in an instant. His dark eyes hardened into the deadly stare of the syndicate head. He shifted back to the cold business of ruling an empire.

Cassian commanded the room. "We have a situation to handle. Tonight, you are meeting with the D'Amore family."

I placed my mug onto the saucer with a sharp clink. "Vincenzo?"

Cassian corrected me. "His daughter. Vittoria."

A flicker of dark intrigue sparked in my chest. Vittoria D'Amore was an anomaly in our brutal world. She was the sole heiress to an undeniably dangerous underworld boss. Most mafia daughters were raised to be quiet wives or political bargaining chips. Rumors painted Vittoria as an architect of violence. They called her a queen waiting to claim her throne.

"What does she want?" I demanded.

Cassian leaned his forearms against the table. "Her father sees what is coming. He knows the power dynamics are shifting. A massive war is inevitable. D'Amore wants an alliance to survive the fallout."

"Why me?" I asked.

Cassian leveled a stern gaze on me. "Because you see through the bullshit. Sit down with her. Assess her actual worth. Figure out exactly what she can offer our syndicate. If she brings nothing to the table, we walk away. If she is a liability, we burn the bridge."

I nodded. The task was tedious but necessary. I despised the political dance of our life. I preferred handling our enemies with a blade in a dark alley.

I stood up from my chair and adjusted the cuffs of my tailored shirt. Carmela paused her meal and looked up at me. She shot me an intense, knowing look. A mocking twist touched her lips.

Carmela stated, "I just wonder if you are underestimating her. She is not like other women you have met."

"I never underestimate anyone. But reputations are usually built on hot air," I replied blankly.

The underground club throbbed with heavy bass. The vibration traveled through the concrete floor and resonated directly into my boots. The air hung thick with the metallic scent of sweat, expensive cologne, and stale cigarette smoke. I sat alone in a dimly lit VIP section. The shadows concealed my face. My back rested against a soundproofed wall.

I waited to see if the pampered Vittoria lived up to her mythical reputation. The mafia had a pathetic habit of exaggerating the prowess of its elite. I fully expected to meet a spoiled princess wrapped in designer clothes, playing at being a gangster.

Then the heavy velvet curtains at the entrance parted.

She walked into the chaotic den of sins. She wore sleek black leather and a silk blouse that clung to her petite frame. Her hair was pulled back tight. Her face was a masterclass in lethal indifference. She radiated terrifying confidence with every step she took toward the bar.

Scores of dangerous men filled the room. Killers, thieves, and enforcers stopped their conversations. They turned their heads. They aimed hungry stares at her. They tracked her movement like a pack of starving wolves catching a fresh scent.

Vittoria ignored every single one of them. She did not clutch a purse tight. She did not cast nervous glances over her shoulder. She commanded the space just by existing in it.

I stepped out of the darkness and approached the bar. I moved with silent, predatory grace. I stopped right behind her and let my shadow fall over her shoulders. I deliberately towered over her petite frame. I wanted to test her nerve.

"De Leone." I introduced myself.

She did not flinch. She pivoted on her heel to face me. "D'Amore."

I stared down at her. "You are smaller than I thought."

Vittoria fired back instantly. "You are just as annoying as I expected."

Her voice cracked like a whip over the pounding music.

I let a dark smirk curve my lips. A thrill of genuine amusement hit my chest. I appreciated a woman who possessed actual bite. I hated the trembling fear most people displayed in my presence. I gestured toward my private booth. She followed me without hesitation. We slid into the curved leather seats facing each other.

Vittoria cut straight to the point. "Do we have a deal to discuss, or did you just summon me here to comment on my height?"

Her dark eyes remained locked on mine. She skipped the tedious small talk I despised. She was cold and precise.

I leaned into her personal space. "Your father thinks our expansive families should play on the same team for the impending war. I am the one who decides if that happens. What do you have to trade?"

She answered evenly. "Resources. Connections. Power."

She sat unyielding in the face of my pressure. We were eye to eye. She was unblinking. She was devoid of fear.

Vittoria challenged me. "The question is whether you actually know how to use them."

I stared at her hard face. She possessed sheer audacity. I decided to push her one step further. A crystal glass of expensive whiskey sat untouched on the table between us. I picked it up and offered it to her.

"A toast to potential partnerships," I said.

Vittoria took the heavy glass from my hand. Her fingers brushed mine. She did not break eye contact. She tilted her wrist. She poured the amber liquid straight onto the dirty floor between our shoes. The expensive alcohol splattered across the scuffed leather of my boots.

Vittoria set the empty glass down. "I think I would drink poison instead."

My smirk faded into a flat, calculating line. She was not putting on a fragile facade for show. She was not masking her terror with bravado. In that exact moment, a profound realization hit me. She genuinely was not afraid of me. She viewed herself as my equal.

"You have a reckless mouth on you," I warned her.

She parted her lips to respond.

A catastrophic explosion rocked the building.

The deafening boom shattered the heavy bass of the music. The reinforced steel doors of the main entrance blew inward with terrifying force. A massive shockwave tore through the room. Glass bottles exploded behind the bar. Patrons were thrown to the floor. Choking black smoke flooded the entrance. The screaming of dying patrons pierced through the ringing in my ears.

Masked killers poured into the club through the smoke. They moved with military precision. They carried assault rifles and opened fire on the chaos. This was not a random street brawl. These were well-trained hitmen executing a coordinated slaughter.

I drew my heavy gun from my shoulder holster on sheer instinct. I flipped the heavy table over to create a barricade. I returned rapid, lethal fire through the total chaos. My bullets tore through the smoke and dropped two of the masked men rushing our flank. I was built for this violence. This was my element.

"Get down!" I barked over the gunfire.

My eyes scanned the upper balcony through the thick haze. I spotted a shooter raising his customized rifle. He was aiming his barrel directly at our position. I shifted my weapon to take him out.

I was a fraction of a second too late.

The muzzle flash illuminated the smoke.

I watched as Vittoria took a high-caliber bullet straight to her right shoulder. The sheer kinetic force of the impact made her stagger backward. Blood exploded from the back of her black silk blouse.

My heart stalled. Most men would scream. Most hardened soldiers would drop to their knees and cry out for help.

Vittoria did not fall.

To my grim surprise, she caught her balance against the edge of a shredded booth. She did not scream. She did not shed a single tear. She merely gritted her teeth in silent fury. Her jaw clenched tight enough to snap bone. She smoothly lifted her own weapon with her good left arm. She aimed through the smoke.

She shot the man dead between the eyes before he could even squeeze his trigger a second time.

The shooter's body plummeted from the balcony and crashed onto the blood-soaked dance floor.

I ignored the flying bullets pinging off the walls around us. I moved swiftly to her side. I forcefully grabbed her uninjured arm. Dark, thick blood rapidly soaked through her sleek black clothes. It dripped down her fingertips and pooled on the shattered glass covering the floor.

"You are shot," I stated the obvious.

Vittoria replied instantly. "I figured."

Her voice was tight. It was strained with immense pain. Yet her dark eyes remained unflinching and terrifying under the dim lights as she stared at me.

I tightened my grip on her arm to keep her upright. Gunfire pounded relentlessly against our makeshift cover. The choking smoke thickened in the air. Absolute panic consumed the burning club. People trampled each other in a desperate bid for survival.

An unfamiliar sensation settled over my chest. The adrenaline rushing through my veins mixed with something else. It was a shocking realization. For the first time in a very long while, I found myself genuinely impressed. I stared down at the bleeding, defiant woman standing strong beside me in the crossfire.

Maybe Vittoria D'Amore was not just a bedtime legend meant to scare rival bosses. Maybe the exaggerated tales of the underworld underestimated her. She possessed an iron will forged in violence.

Maybe she was something different.
