A Dangerous Ally
POV: Vittoria
As my body collided with the blood-soaked floorboards of the nightclub, the deafening roar of automatic gunfire faded into a harsh, ringing drone. Blinding pain ripped through my shattered shoulder, pulling me toward the dark edge of unconsciousness. Through the choking smoke and the frantic screams of dying men, my mind snapped back to a few short hours ago. My father’s chilling voice echoed in my head, serving as a grim testament to how I ended up bleeding out in this chaotic slaughterhouse.
It was the terrifying way my father, Vincenzo D'Amore, discussed calculated murder over our quiet breakfast. The morning sun poured through the arched windows of the estate dining room, illuminating the pristine white tablecloth. He sat at the head of the long table, a solitary figure commanding the massive space. He smoothly sliced through his thick, cooked, bloody steak. He chewed his meal with a sociopathic casualness that defined the dark reality of our existence.
He reached for his crystal glass and took a delicate sip of his expensive morning wine. To drink rich red wine at dawn was a testament to his ruthless eccentricities. He spoke about the shifting tides of the underworld as if he were discussing a light breeze coming in from the coast. "The De Leones are ascending. And with Pietro's murder, they have gotten stronger. Nobody in our world believed Cassian would survive the coma. But since he has woken up, they will not stop for anything until they have control."
I sat across from him, keeping my posture straight and my hands folded neatly in my lap. I watched a thick drop of crimson blood pool onto his fine porcelain plate.
I pointed out the logical fact, keeping my tone steady. "Pietro deserved his gruesome fate given his past transgressions against their family. The man was a sloppy liability. He thought he could bite the hand that fed the underworld, and they made a bloody example out of him."
My father ignored my rationale. His dark, calculating gaze remained fixated on the looming existential threat to our own empire. He set his silver utensils down on the table. The sharp metallic clink echoed in the vast room, demanding my undivided attention.
"The De Leone brothers are untouchable right now. They are moving like phantoms through the city hierarchy, tearing down anyone who stands in their path. I want an alliance with them."
I stared at him, refusing to let my shock show. The concept was a terrifying prospect in our brutal world. Trusting a De Leone was considered akin to shaking hands and doing business directly with the devil himself. They built their empire on mountains of corpses, shattered promises, and cold ruthlessness. You did not ally with apex predators. You stayed out of their hunting grounds.
I kept my expression composed, though my mind raced with the strategic implications of his words. If the De Leones turned their sights on the D'Amore syndicate, the resulting war would bathe the city streets in fire and blood. "You think they would attack us?"
He replied without a shred of hesitation. His dark eyes glinted dangerously above the rim of his crystal glass. "I think they would slit our throats if it ever became convenient for them. Which is why we need to make sure they never do."
I picked up my espresso and took a slow sip. The bitter, scalded taste of the coffee grounded my racing thoughts.
I set my porcelain cup back onto its matching saucer. "And how do you propose we secure this alliance?"
His proposed solution to this massive threat was elegantly simple, yet lethal.
He leaned forward, bracing his thick forearms against the table. "You. You are my only heir and the future of the D'Amore syndicate. You have spent your entire life proving you belong in this life. You will walk into their den, sit with them, and prove that we are valuable allies. You will make the unhinged Dante De Leone trust you."
I let out an open scoff at the sheer absurdity of his demand. The name alone sent a cold shiver down the spine of every seasoned enforcer in the tri-state area. Dante was a hollowed-out shell of a man devoid of a human conscience. Cassian was the calculating brains of their massive operation, but Dante was the jagged blade that executed the gruesome wet work. He was a rabid dog who did not trust a single living soul. He would never trust a rival mafia princess.
I leveled my gaze with my father, refusing to back down from the challenge burning in his eyes. "Dante De Leone does not trust anyone. He is a monster who murders without blinking or breathing heavy. He does not operate on logic, father. He operates on primal violence."
His tone brokoked no argument. He was uncaring of the immense physical danger he was forcing upon me. "So you better try to make him trust you. I do not care about your petty reservations or your fears. This is about the survival of our family, Vittoria. Get it done."
I clamped my mouth shut and did not bother arguing further. He had made his final decision, and as the loyal underboss of this syndicate, I had to obey. Stepping into the gravitational orbit of the De Leone family was like walking unarmed into a den of starving lions. I just was not sure if, at the end of this bloody game, I would emerge as the hunter or the hunted.
Later that evening, the heavy gravity of his gamble deepened.
I walked into his private study. The spacious room was cocooned in an oppressive, cigar-smoke-filled silence. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn tight against the night sky, blockading the dangerous outside world. The dim glow of the brass desk lamp cast long, ominous shadows across the wood-paneled walls. Expensive bookshelves lined with ancient texts and leather-bound ledgers surrounded us, holding generations of our bloody family secrets.
My father sat behind his massive mahogany desk. He looked older in the low lighting. The heavy burden of underworld leadership etched deep, permanent lines into his stoic face. He poured two glasses of amber whiskey from a crystal decanter and pushed one across the polished wood toward me.
He leaned forward over his desk, warning me in a hushed, gravelly tone. "The De Leones have grown unpredictable and volatile in the wake of the recent targeted attacks against them. A full-scale underworld war is imminent. The streets are about to run red with blood."
I sank into the oversized leather guest chair. I wrapped my manicured fingers around the cold crystal glass but did not take a drink. He was determined to ensure we would not wind up as collateral damage on the wrong side of the battlefield. He was willing to sacrifice me on the diplomatic front lines to prevent our mutual destruction.
I drummed my fingers against the expensive leather armrest. "And if they will not have us? If they decide we are better off buried?"
A slow, chilling smile pulled at the corners of his aging lips. "Then we help them understand that not having us is not an option."
He picked up his glass and took a slow, measured sip of whiskey. Power, strategy, blood, and control. It was a vicious, unrelenting game I had learned to play from the moment I was old enough to point a loaded gun. My father never showed his hand without calculating a dozen steps ahead.
He offered the information in a dry, matter-of-fact tone. "I have already set a secretive meeting at a private club downtown. It is considered neutral territory by the major syndicates."
I offered a cynical, humorless laugh. I knew firsthand from years of blood and betrayal that there was nothing neutral about any ground the De Leones stood on. They claimed and conquered everywhere they went. If they wanted a massacre, they would initiate a massacre. A peace treaty was just a flimsy piece of paper to men like them.
My father watched my face closely for any sign of weakness or hesitation. "Cassian will not be there. Dante himself will be attending to represent his family."
The air in the study grew dense and suffocating. While Cassian was the calculating face and the sharp mind of the empire, Dante was its most sinister weapon. A cold, unfeeling enforcer who devoured his enemies and left nothing but bones behind. He reigned supreme from a towering pile of mutilated corpses. He was content to stay in the shadows and let his knife do the talking. To meet Dante in person meant staring directly into a merciless abyss.
I stood up from the leather chair. My voice sounded like polished steel, masking the creeping sense of impending doom coiling thick in my gut. I braced my shoulders and prepared myself to face the monster. "Okay. I will go."
My father stood up as well. His stoic expression shifted into something enigmatic. A brief flicker of genuine paternal concern masked his ruthless ambition for a fleeting second. He knew he was sending me into the fire.
He offered the rare warning in a low whisper. "Be careful, Vittoria. The De Leones do not play by the rules."
I smiled. It was a dark, wicked thing that bared my teeth to the shadows. "Neither do I."
