The Blood Game

POV: Vittoria

The underground fight club thrummed with a primal energy. The suffocating air carried the metallic tang of fresh blood, cheap sweat, and the stale stench of spilled liquor. I stood still inside the elevated VIP section. The plush velvet seat behind me offered a deceptive comfort I refused to accept. My posture remained rigid. My spine formed a straight, unbreakable line against the dim backdrop of the warehouse.

I observed the chaos below with utter apathy. The horde of frantic men roared around the chain-link fighting ring. They slammed wadded cash onto the dirty tables. They screamed for blood and broken bones. Inside the cage, a heavily muscled brawler with a crooked nose staggered on his feet. Crimson liquid trickled down his scarred chest. His opponent lunged forward and delivered a devastating uppercut to his ribs. The sickening crack of fracturing bone echoed over the cheering crowd. The staggered man collapsed and hit the grimy mat with a hard thud.

The weak did not deserve to survive in our world. You learned to fight, or you learned to die.

Vincenzo D'Amore had instilled those basic rules into my mind since infancy. One of the most feared mafia dons had not raised a delicate princess. He had not raised a pawn for an arranged marriage or a pretty daughter paraded out for political alliances. He had raised a king. My entire childhood was a brutal curriculum of survival and dominance. I learned how to steady a trembling hand and shoot a firearm long before I ever swung my leg over a bicycle seat. I memorized the precise anatomical pressure points required to snap a grown man's wrist before I ever learned how to dance to a waltz. My father forged me in the fires of the underworld. He meticulously stripped away any semblance of vulnerability until I became his ruthless heir.

Tonight, that lifelong training brought me into the blood-spattered belly of this illicit arena. I was not here to be entertained by animalistic violence. I was here on strict business. My prey was none other than Dante De Leone.

Dante reigned as the cruelest brother of the formidable De Leone clan. The underworld steeped his name in whispers of stomach-turning torture methods. He was a phantom who reveled in playing the bloody physical game of war while his older brother, Cassian, orchestrated their grand strategy from a pristine mahogany desk. My father forced a tactical union with this monster to stamp out a mutual, encroaching enemy. Trust was out of the question. I remained in no position to indulge in that fragile luxury.

A sudden shift in the ambient temperature alerted my heightened senses. A dangerous prickling sensation crawled along the nape of my neck. My instincts screamed of an approaching predator before I even pivoted on my heel.

Dante leaned comfortably against the cold metal railing of my secluded section. He looked like something cut out of the darkness itself. The terrible lighting cast harsh shadows across his features. He wore a black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. Dark, intricate tattoos covered his forearms. The ink told silent stories of violence and dominance. Dark stubble shadowed his strong jawline. His unreadable dark brown eyes locked onto mine with a terrifying intensity. He observed me like a morbid puzzle he intended to rip apart piece by piece.

He tasted my surname with slow mockery. "D'Amore."

My hand encircled my tumbler of whiskey to ground myself in the present moment. "De Leone."

He assessed my frame from head to toe. "You're smaller than I expected you'd be."

I met his stare with pure ice. "You're as annoying as I expected you'd be."

His smirk widened by a deliberate fraction. "I like a woman with bite."

I scowled at him. "And I don't like men who waste my time."

I skipped the tedious idle chit-chat that plagued our elite circles. The polite social maneuvers meant nothing when our empires stood on the brink of slaughter. We needed to get down to the brutal realities of our shared business.

"The coming underworld war is going to catch fire across the city. The smart families are already moving their pieces. The survivors are aligning themselves in the shadows. I am offering you my family's extensive resources. I am offering our deep-rooted connections and our raw power." I stared into his dark eyes without a single blink. "The question is—do you know how to use them?"

He laughed at the sheer audacity of my proposal. The deep, rumbling sound carried a dangerous edge. I acutely noted the subtle shifts in his body language. His long fingers twitched near his concealed weapon. His sharp jaw tightened in suppressed aggression. He hated being questioned.

"Whiskey?" he asked casually, extending his own untouched glass out toward me as a false peace offering.

I maintained unbroken eye contact. I took the heavy crystal glass from his palm. I tilted my wrist without breaking his gaze. I dumped the expensive amber liquid straight onto the grimy floor. The dark liquor splashed across the dirty space between our designer shoes.

I stated the words with flawless calm. "I think I'd prefer poison."

His arrogant grin faded in an instant. His expression blanked into a chilling mask. The lethal silence stretching between us promised immediate retribution.

Boom.

A deafening explosion shook the structural foundations of the building. Immense shockwaves tore through the club with catastrophic force. The brutal impact shattered the heavy wooden doors near the main entrance into lethal projectiles. Glass bottles flew off the bar counter and burst into jagged shards. Chunks of plaster and splintered debris rained through the hazy air. Men screamed in primal terror as the blast hurled them backward across the scattered tables. Blistering flames erupted from the detonation zone. Thick, suffocating black smoke engulfed the exit and plunged the room into a chaotic hellscape.

Faceless assassins stormed through the broken emergency exit. They wore dark tactical gear and fitted black masks. Their automatic rifles sat cocked against their shoulders. They spit relentless fire into the terrified crowd. This was a coordinated strike. These were trained killers, not typical street thugs.

A spray of warm crimson splashed across the side of my face. One of my personal guards fell dead beside me. His skull hit the floorboards with a sickening thud. His blood pooled rapidly at my feet and soaked into the hem of my trousers.

Survival instinct hijacked my brain.

I dropped low to the ground. I crouched aggressively behind the shattered remains of the wooden bar. My hands moved with fluid, ingrained muscle memory. I drew my concealed gun before my conscious mind even processed the sheer scale of the ambush.

Dante moved with terrifying speed. He possessed the fast, predatory reflexes of a seasoned killer. His own loyal men materialized behind him through the choking smoke. They returned deadly fire into the gloom without a single second of hesitation. Muzzle flashes illuminated the grim warehouse in rapid, strobe-like bursts. The relentless deafening roar of automatic gunfire drowned out the agonizing screams of the dying patrons below us. The acrid stench of cordite burned my lungs.

Dante glanced back at me through the chaotic pandemonium. A sharp spark ignited in his dark eyes. It was a testing look, brimming with a violently threatening edge. He wanted to see if the mafia king's daughter would break under the pressure of a real massacre.

He shouted over the deafening cacophony of the firefight. "Can hold your own?"

My grip tightened around the cold metal of my weapon. "You bet."

The masked attackers rapidly closed in on our vulnerable position. Their heavy tactical boots trampled over the dead bodies littering the floor. They advanced with ruthless precision. We were trapped in a tightening perimeter of lead and fire. I took a sharp breath of smoky air and calculated my angle.

I spun around from my cover. I raised my arms and leveled my stance. I pointed the barrel of my gun straight toward the advancing vanguard. My finger squeezed the trigger and—

A burning piece of lead tore viciously right through my shoulder.

Blinding, agonizing pain erupted through my entire body. The sheer kinetic force of the bullet knocked the breath from my lungs and sent me spiraling toward the blood-soaked floor.
