Unspoken Alliance

POV: Vittoria

Searing, white-hot pain scorched my bleeding shoulder. The dark fabric of my clothes grew saturated, pressing damp and heavy against my skin. The sheer kinetic force of the sniper round still echoed through my bones, but I shoved the agony into a distant corner of my mind. Smoke plumed from the shattered glass fixtures above us. Panic swept through the underground club like a tidal wave. Screaming civilians trampled over one another. They slipped on pooling blood and broken bottles in a desperate stampede for the emergency exits.

Dante De Leone and I ignored the chaos around us. Amid the deafening roar of gunfire and breaking wood, our eyes locked through the sudden haze. We shared a single, unspoken thought, forging a silent pact in the heart of the crossfire. We needed to eliminate the immediate threat.

Operating on ingrained adrenaline and years of brutal training, we moved into the fray together. It was a lethal, terrifying synchronization. We did not exchange tactical signals. We did not scream orders over the wailing alarms. A masked mercenary rushed our left flank, wielding a customized submachine gun. Dante dropped him without hesitation. His heavy pistol barked in the dark. The rapid muzzle flashes illuminated the sharp, unforgiving lines of Dante's jaw in the smoke.

I spun on my leather-clad heel. The tearing agony in my shoulder muscles flared up, screaming in raw protest, but I shut the weakness down. I tracked a secondary shooter climbing onto the wooden railing of the VIP balcony. My finger squeezed the trigger in one fluid motion. I put a flawless bullet straight through the attacker's throat. His weapon clattered against the iron banister before his body plummeted over the edge, crashing onto the sticky dance floor with a hollow thud.

Dante grunted approvingly over the deafening ambient noise, a dark thrill lacing his deep voice. "Good shot."

I did not have a spare second to acknowledge his praise. Another armed attacker emerged from the dust clouds near the shattered bar, hoisting a heavy shotgun. I pivoted to aim, but a large hand clamped down on my arm. Dante shoved me out of the line of fire. His iron grip bruised my uninjured shoulder, tossing me behind a reinforced booth. He stepped into the open, firing a rapid double-tap directly into the emergent shooter's chest. He took down the second man himself.

I wiped a layer of gray concrete dust from my cheek and stood up straight, glaring at his broad back to steady my breathing. "I had him."

Dante casually, expertly reloaded his weapon, snapping a fresh heavy magazine into place with a crisp metallic click as if we were at a Sunday shooting range rather than a slaughterhouse. "Sure you did. You are bleeding, by the way."

I spat back, refusing to let him see the throbbing pain clawing at my flesh. "I noticed."

Stepping out from behind the booth, I surveyed the surrounding carnage. Bodies littered the destroyed venue. Flipped tables and bullet-riddled decor painted a grim picture of our sudden reality. It was glaringly obvious this attack was not a random street hit. Someone resourceful had meticulously planned this precise ambush, arming a private hit squad just for us.

A faint scrape of tactical boots drew my sharp attention. I spotted isolated movement near the splintered front entrance. The final remaining attacker lay sprawled on the floor. He was bleeding out from a gut wound and barely breathing. His bloodshot eyes darted wildly as I approached.

My wounded shoulder screamed at the abrupt motion, but I crouched beside him anyway. I grabbed him tight by the collar of his tactical vest and hoisted his upper body off the slick floor. "Who hired you to kill us?"

The dying man choked on his own fluids, dark red blood bubbling on his cracked lips. "Go to hell."

I smiled at him, my face devoid of any mercy. "You first."

I twisted his neck with a quick, clean snap. The sickening crack echoed loud and sharp in the small pocket of silence that had descended over our corner of the ruined club. His lifeless bulk dropped heavily from my gloved grip.

When I stood up and shook a stinging numbness from my fingertips, I turned to find Dante watching my brutal efficiency. An amused, predatory edge sharpened his intense gaze. My heart pounded relentlessly against my ribs. Beneath the roaring adrenaline pumping through my veins, a deeply unsettling realization hit me like a solid physical blow. We worked effortlessly, perfectly well together. It was intuitive. It was strange. Above all, it was dangerous for someone like me who survived by trusting no one. Fighting beside the boss of a rival family felt like breathing, and that terrified me more than the hail of bullets.

Dante tilted his head, smiling with an infuriating, intoxicating mix of dark amusement and raw curiosity. "I will be in touch."

He turned his broad back to me and walked away into the billowing smoke. He blended into the shadows as his own enforcers began filtering into the wreckage, managing to make himself impossible for me to ignore.

My armored SUV idled in the dark alleyway behind the chaotic scene. I climbed into the reinforced cabin and slammed the heavy door shut, cutting off the distant wail of approaching sirens. I slumped against the cold leather seat, ripping a large gauze pad from the emergency medkit stashed under the console. Gripping the fabric tightly, I secured a makeshift bandage over my bleeding wound, applying harsh pressure to stem the flow.

By the time my car reached the towering iron gates of the D'Amore estate, my combat adrenaline had faded. It left behind nothing but a heavy, bone-deep exhaustion that threatened to pull me under. The imposing marble fortress stood quiet and still under the moonlight, a stark contrast to the massacre I had just departed. The heavy gates swung open, granting us entry into our private sanctuary.

I strode through the dense oak front doors and stepped into the dim, cavernous hallway of the mansion. The vaulted ceilings amplified the sharp click of my boots until I stopped short. My father, Vincenzo, was already waiting for me. He paced the cold marble floor with calculated, predatory steps. His face remained an unreadable mask of restrained fury, shadows clinging to his aged, ruthless features.

His piercing, hawkish gaze locked onto the crude makeshift bandage and the dark blood staining my shoulder. He stepped forward to inspect the damage, his protective instincts warring with his mafia-hardened exterior.

I stepped back, rejecting his silent coddling. I retreated straight past him, setting a direct course for his expansive study. I needed something far stronger than a father's pity tonight. His imposing, suffocating presence shadowed my every step, the heavy double doors yielding to my push as the familiar scent of old books and fine tobacco flooded my senses.

I marched to his polished mahogany desk, grabbing a hefty crystal decanter to pour myself a massive glass of neat whiskey. My hand remained stubbornly steady despite the radiating agony tearing through my collarbone.

Taking a large swallow of the amber liquid, the burning liquor coated my throat and soothed the chill seeping into my bones. Once I set the heavy glass down on the wood grain, I looked at him. "Someone had classified information that I was meeting Dante tonight. We walked into a slaughterhouse. Well-equipped shooters hit us from multiple angles. It might be directly connected to the recent attack on Cassian, or perhaps it was orchestrated by someone fearing the sheer power of a combined D'Amore and De Leone alliance."

My father absorbed the tactical information in stony silence. He stared unblinking across the dim room, mentally calculating the shifting criminal landscape. Then, his singular focus shifted sharply to the man who fought beside me. "Did he impress you?"

I stiffened, glaring at his probing expression. "I was not there to be impressed."

Vincenzo let out a low, raspy laugh that grated on my nerves. "You are blatantly dodging the question, Vittoria."

I kept my voice icy. "I am answering the only issue that matters right now. We survived. They did not."

His faint, mocking amusement vanished in a heartbeat. The grim, suffocating reality of our dangerous political situation settled heavily over the dark room like a weighted shroud. He leaned his knuckles heavily on the edge of the desk.

"If our faceless enemies knew the exact time and location of this secretive sit-down, it means someone close to us is talking. Someone within our trusted inner circle is leaking our secrets."

The truth hung between us. It was an ugly, poisonous revelation. Our impenetrable fortress was compromised from the inside. A cold, paranoid determination rapidly replaced my exhaustion. The throbbing sting in my shoulder became a stark, burning reminder of the betrayal.

I adjusted my grip on my crystal whiskey glass. My movements were slow, calculated, and deliberate as I looked my father dead in the eye. "I will discover who is responsible."

Vincenzo nodded slowly. He leaned forward into the dim perimeter of the desk lamp, the faint light catching the ruthless glint in his dark eyes. "Good. Because if you do not find them, I will."
