Cruel Awakening

DAPHNE

I woke up with a sharp, desperate gasp. The bitter, burning taste of raw pepper still lingered harshly at the back of my dry throat. Every ragged breath I took scraped against my swollen vocal cords, serving as a cruel, immediate reminder of Dominic’s relentless and sadistic control the night before. My chest ached with a hollow soreness, the physical aftermath of choking and blacking out at the dining table under his unmoving, predatory stare. I blinked against the morning light filtering into the sprawling master bedroom, my vision swimming as panic began to settle into my bones.

I was lying in our massive bed. A heavy, suffocating weight across my stomach made my spine freeze.

Beside me, Dominic’s strong arm was wrapped tightly around my waist. His hold was deeply possessive, anchoring my body to his side even while he was fast asleep. His bare chest pressed against my back, radiating a steady, overwhelming heat that made my skin crawl with apprehension. I held my breath, terrified that the slight rise and fall of my lungs would disturb him. I studied his face in the soft morning light. As he began to stir and wake up, a fleeting, almost human softness crossed his sharp, aristocratic features. For a fraction of a second, he looked peaceful, stripped of the malice that usually hardened his jaw and darkened his eyes.

But my rigid, defiant silence acted as a trigger. I refused to melt into his embrace. I refused to offer him the morning greeting a normal husband might expect.

The brief illusion of softness vanished, quickly replaced by his usual mask of cold, dictatorial authority. His eyes snapped open, sharp and piercing, locking onto mine with a terrifying intensity. The temperature in the room seemed to drop as he registered my tense posture.

I attempted to slide out from under his heavy arm, shifting my weight toward the edge of the mattress. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"I cannot stand being in this house right now. I desperately need to go out to clear my head."

His casual grip instantly transformed into a crushing vice. His thick fingers clamped down on my hip, pulling me roughly back against his hard torso. The raw power in his hold sent a fresh spike of fear shooting through my veins. He shifted his weight, rising slightly to loom over me, trapping me beneath the heavy shadow of his broad shoulders.

His fingers slowly trailed up my collarbone, moving with a deliberate, agonizing slowness until they curled around the fragile column of my neck. The gesture was intimately terrifying, a blatant display of his absolute physical control over my body. His thumb pressed lightly against my racing pulse, feeling the frantic rhythm of my fear.

"I am your husband and I demand to know your every move." His voice was a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated against my skin.

My breath hitched. The lingering pain from last night's ordeal flared up in my throat, mingling with the fresh terror of his grip. The memories of the burning spice and my desperate gasps for air pushed me past the point of rational thought. I felt cornered, desperate for an escape from the suffocating aura of his dominance.

"I need to go to the hospital after what you did to me last night." The words blurted out of my mouth before I could stop them.

His thumb stopped tracing my pulse. His dark eyes narrowed, processing my defiant demand. The silence stretched between us, thick and oppressive, making my lungs burn as I waited for his retaliation. Instead of exploding, his expression settled into an unyielding, stone-cold mask.

"I’ll take you. You don’t get a say in this." His response was immediate and sharp.

He released my neck and pushed himself off the bed, his movements fluid and coiled with tension. He didn't offer another word, but the silent promise of his constant surveillance hung heavy in the air.

Shortly after, we arrived at the sterile, brightly lit hospital. The harsh fluorescent bulbs buzzing overhead were a stark contrast to the shadowy, oppressive atmosphere of the mansion. The scent of antiseptic and bleach filled the corridors, offering a strange, clinical comfort. We were ushered into a small examination room, the door clicking shut behind us.

A kind, soft-spoken doctor walked in holding a tablet. He had warm eyes and a gentle demeanor, introducing himself in a calm, soothing voice. He asked me to sit on the edge of the examination table. As he began his assessment, he gently examined the faint bruising on my neck and the raw, red marks blooming on my arms from where Dominic had gripped me the night before. His touch was professional, clinical, and devoid of any malice.

Desperate for any semblance of human decency, I felt a wave of profound relief wash over me. I offered the doctor a small, polite, and deeply grateful smile. It was a simple expression of sheer appreciation for his professional calmness, a silent thank-you for treating me like a human being rather than a possession to be broken.

But standing rigidly in the doorway of the examination room, Dominic’s massive presence loomed like a dark, brewing storm.

I could feel his gaze burning into the side of my face. Even without looking directly at him, the weight of his stare was suffocating. I risked a quick glance toward the door. Dominic’s arms were crossed over his broad chest, his tailored shirt pulled taut across his shoulders. I could see his jaw clenching rhythmically with every innocent, clinical touch of the doctor's hands on my skin. His dark eyes were fixed on the doctor's fingers, tracking their movement over my bruised arms with a lethal intensity.

The tension in the small room thickened, becoming a tangible force that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The air grew heavy, the sterile environment suddenly feeling too small to contain the radiating waves of his possessive fury. The doctor remained oblivious, making quiet notes on his tablet and asking me standard questions about my throat and my breathing.

Dominic abruptly stepped forward, closing the distance between the doorway and the examination table in two long, predatory strides. His imposing frame cast a dark shadow over the doctor.

"We're done here." He growled the words, the sound vibrating with a suppressed, lethal warning.

The doctor blinked, stepping back slightly in surprise. He tried to maintain his professional composure, offering a polite explanation about needing to finish the assessment, but Dominic’s deadly glare shut him down instantly. The unspoken threat in his dark eyes effectively ended the appointment prematurely.

Dominic grabbed my elbow, his grip punishing and tight, and hauled me off the examination table. He didn't wait for the doctor to speak again. He marched me out of the room, down the bright corridors, and straight toward the exit.

The very moment we stepped out of the sliding glass doors and reached the isolated parking lot, Dominic’s suppressed rage exploded.

The warm afternoon air offered no comfort. He forcefully backed me up against the side of his expensive car, the cold metal biting into my spine through my thin shirt. He crowded into my personal space, caging me in with his arms planted on the roof of the car on either side of my head. His dark eyes were blazing with an unhinged fury, his chest heaving with heavy, ragged breaths.

He viciously accused me of enjoying the male doctor's examination. His irrational, toxic jealousy radiated off him in suffocating, physical waves, pressing down on my chest and stealing the air from my lungs. He twisted the innocent medical interaction into something dirty and betraying, his deep voice dripping with venom as he spat out his accusations.

"He was just doing his job! This is insane, Dominic." I whispered fiercely, my voice shaking with a mixture of disbelief and terror.

I pressed my trembling hands against his solid chest, trying desperately to stand my ground against his looming frame. Pushing against him was like trying to move a stone wall. He didn't budge an inch. The heat of his body seeped through his shirt, a terrifying reminder of the physical disparity between us.

Dominic merely narrowed his eyes, the dark irises looking like bottomless pits of obsession. He leaned in closer, his lips brushing against my ear.

"Let me make one thing perfectly clear, Daphne. You’re mine. Present and future. No one else touches you like that. Absolutely no one." His voice dripped with a dark, terrifying possessiveness that sent a violent shiver down my spine.

Without giving me a single second to process or respond, he pulled back, grabbed the handle, and roughly shoved me into the passenger seat of the car. The door slammed shut with a deafening thud, trapping me inside the leather-scented cabin. He stalked around the hood of the vehicle, his jaw set in a rigid line of pure fury, and slid into the driver's seat.

The ensuing drive back to the mansion was agonizingly silent.

The air inside the car felt too thick to breathe, heavy with a terrifying promise of violence. Dominic stared straight ahead at the road, his knuckles turning stark white as he gripped the steering wheel. The silence was not empty; it was a pressurized container ready to burst. I pressed myself as close to the passenger door as possible, staring out the window at the blurring trees, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I knew this was not over. The irrational rage boiling beneath his calm exterior was going to spill over the moment we were behind closed doors.

The very second the car tires screeched to a halt in the sweeping gravel driveway of the mansion, the true nightmare began.

Dominic killed the engine and moved with terrifying speed. He unbuckled his seatbelt, threw open his door, and marched around the front of the car. He yanked my door open so hard the hinges groaned in protest. Before I could even unbuckle my own seatbelt or attempt to scramble away, his hand shot out. He grabbed me tightly by the wrist, his fingers digging into my skin, and dragged me forcefully out of the vehicle.

I stumbled over the edge of the doorframe, my feet hitting the uneven gravel. My knees buckled, but his iron grip kept me upright. He completely ignored my frantic protests, treating my struggling body like a lifeless ragdoll.

"You like men touching you, don't you?" he spat venomously, the words lashing out like a physical strike.

His grip was bruising my skin, the pressure intense enough to leave deep purple marks. He dragged my actively struggling body across the sharp gravel driveway and up the wide stone steps toward the imposing front doors of the house. The sharp rocks bit into the soles of my shoes, my ankles twisting as I fought to keep up with his relentless, furious pace.

I pulled back, planting my feet on the stone threshold. I begged him to stop, sobbing openly. Tears streamed down my face, blurring my vision. I screamed that he was hurting me, that he was deeply scaring me. I pleaded with him to listen to reason, to see that his jealousy was a fabricated delusion.

But his terrifying rage seemed to grant him an impossible, unyielding strength. He didn't even break his stride.

"Good. Maybe you need to be scared." He snapped the cruel words back at me over his shoulder, his tone devoid of a single shred of empathy.

He hauled me mercilessly down the long, echoing corridor of the mansion. The opulent surroundings—the crystal chandeliers, the polished marble floors, the expensive artwork—blurred into a nauseating streak of colors as he dragged me deeper into the house. We bypassed the main living areas, the dining room, and the sweeping staircase. He pulled me toward a secluded wing of the mansion, an area devoid of natural light and heavy with a damp, forgotten chill.

Stopping abruptly in front of a heavy wooden door, he turned the brass handle and shoved the door open. With one powerful, ruthless motion, he hurled my body forcefully into the dark space.

I flew forward, unable to catch my balance. I hit the hard, unforgiving floor of the empty, windowless storeroom. Sharp pain shot through my knees and the palms of my hands as they scraped against the cold, bare concrete. Dust bloomed into the stale air around me, choking my lungs. I gasped in pain, my body trembling from the sudden, brutal impact.

Before I could even attempt to scramble back to my feet, the heavy wooden door slammed shut directly in my face.

The echoing boom rattled my teeth. The metallic click of the deadbolt sliding into place sealed my fate with cruel, absolute finality. The sound was a definitive period at the end of his violent sentence.

I pushed myself up onto my bruised knees and threw my weight against the heavy wood. Panic, raw and suffocating, clawed at my throat. I beat my bruised fists desperately against the thick door panels. The dull thuds of my knuckles striking the wood were swallowed by the vast, silent expanse of the mansion outside.

"Dominic! Open the door!" I screamed, my voice cracking under the strain of my hysterical sobs.

I pounded until my hands throbbed with a dull, aching fire. I pleaded with him to let me out, screaming through the thick barrier that I had done absolutely nothing wrong to deserve this. I begged him to see reason, promising anything to escape the creeping, oppressive darkness of the windowless room.

His voice seeped through the tiny crack beneath the door, slipping into the dark room like a sliver of ice.

"You’ll stay in there for exactly as long as I decide. No food. No water."

He sounded colder and more merciless than ever before. There was no anger left in his tone, only the flat, chilling sound of total control. He was a warden issuing a sentence to a prisoner.

I stopped pounding. I stood frozen in the pitch-black room, listening with bated breath.

The heavy, rhythmic sound of his dress shoes against the marble floor echoed down the corridor. The footsteps moved steadily away from the storeroom door. With every step, the sound grew fainter, stretching the distance between us. I pressed my ear against the cold wood, desperate to hear him turn back, desperate for a sign that this was just a momentary scare tactic.

But the footsteps slowly faded into total nothingness.

The profound, suffocating despair of my imprisonment crashed over me. I lost the strength in my legs. I slid weakly down the rough surface of the door, the wood catching on my clothes, until my body hit the cold concrete floor. The darkness around me was absolute, so thick and impenetrable that opening my eyes yielded the exact same result as keeping them squeezed shut. The air in the storeroom was stale, smelling of old dust and forgotten things.

I pulled my legs close, hugging my aching knees tightly to my chest. The physical pain from the hard fall and the bruising grip on my wrist faded into the background, eclipsed by the sheer, unadulterated panic of being trapped. The isolation pressed down on my shoulders, a heavy, invisible weight that threatened to crush my spirit entirely.

"Dominic."

I whispered his name hoarsely into the pitch-black void. My voice was a broken, pathetic rasp that barely carried past my own lips. I begged him to come back. I begged him not to leave me alone in the dark, stripped of food, water, and basic human dignity.

I waited for the sound of his footsteps to return. I waited for the metallic click of the lock to undo my suffering. I waited for the sliver of light from the corridor to break the suffocating gloom.

But the massive house remained terrifyingly silent.
