Declaration of Power

DAPHNE

The heavy silence of the mansion crashed back down around me. I stood frozen on the living room rug, reeling from the bitter, humiliating realization of what Dominic had done. He had canceled my credit cards that morning without a single warning, stripping away my financial autonomy with a flick of his wrist. The echo of his heavy footsteps fading down the long hallway felt like a death knell to my freedom. I needed to move. I desperately sought some form of mundane distraction to calm the frantic, racing rhythm of my heart. I turned my back on the grand living room and took refuge in the sprawling kitchen.

The cool granite countertops and gleaming stainless steel appliances offered a sterile sanctuary. I pulled a heavy wooden cutting board from the cabinet and grabbed a row of fresh vegetables from the refrigerator, needing to busy my trembling hands. I focused on the rhythmic task of chopping onions, bell peppers, and garlic. The repetitive motion of the sharp chef’s knife hitting the wood provided a fragile, quiet peace. I lost myself in the sizzle of oil hitting the hot pan and the rising steam of dinner cooking on the stove. I stood over the island, letting the heat of the boiling pots warm my cold skin. For a brief hour, the immense, empty mansion felt like a normal home instead of a gilded cage built to trap me.

That frail attempt at solace shattered the second I heard the heavy, deliberate sound of Dominic's footsteps echoing behind me on the kitchen tile. The steady click of his expensive dress shoes grew closer, a predatory rhythm invading my safe space. Before I could even turn around or brace myself for his presence, his strong hands clamped down hard on my waist. His grip dug into my skin through the thin fabric of my clothes. He spun me around, pinning my back against the hard edge of the counter. He forced his mouth over mine in a bruising, ravenous kiss.

He crashed his lips against my mouth, forcing my jaw open to let his tongue invade. There was zero tenderness in the physical act. His teeth scraped against my bottom lip. His tongue laid claim to my mouth, demanding submission and taking whatever he wanted. It was a ruthless, physical declaration of his absolute power and ownership over me. I suffocated under his dominant weight, the scent of his expensive cologne and male aggression overwhelming my senses. Furious by the assault, I shoved my hands hard against his broad chest. I pushed with every ounce of strength I had left, breaking the contact. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, trying to scrub away the lingering heat of his skin.

"How dare you touch me?"

Dominic wiped his own lips, a dark, mocking smirk forming on his handsome face. He leaned in, letting his breath ghost over my cheek in a chilling promise.

"You are my wife Daphne, I have every right to touch you however I want to. Soon, you won’t be able to resist me. And I’ll have you."

I turned my back to him, desperate to escape his suffocating presence. I took refuge once again in the simmering pots on the stove, gripping the handle of a wooden spoon. I tried my hardest to mask the violent tremor in my hands as I stirred the food. The air in the kitchen grew thick and unbreathable. I felt his piercing gaze burning into my back for a few agonizing seconds before he finally stepped back. The click of his shoes faded as he left the kitchen, but the damage was done.

The oppressive, heavy tension followed us out of the kitchen and exploded at the formal dining table. The long mahogany table stretched between us like a battlefield. I set the porcelain plates down on the placemats. We sat in silence. The only sound in the vast dining room was the soft hum of the air conditioning. I kept my eyes fixed on my own plate, waiting for the inevitable storm to break. Dominic picked up his expensive silver fork and took his first bite of the food I had prepared. The reaction was instantaneous. He slammed his fork down against the porcelain plate. The deafening clatter echoed off the high ceilings, making me flinch in my seat.

"What the hell is this? This tastes like you dumped an entire jar of pepper in it. Did you do this on purpose as some petty, childish revenge?"

I stared at him in pure shock, my heart dropping into my stomach. I gripped the edges of the table, feeling the blood drain from my face as I registered his furious accusation.

"No, I swear, I didn't do it on purpose! It was merely an accident while I was distracted!"

My frantic pleas fell on deaf ears. His jaw clenched in unyielding rage. He stood up abruptly, his heavy chair scraping against the hardwood floor with a harsh shriek. He snatched the heavy glass pepper shaker from the center of the table and stepped over to my side. He stood over me, his broad frame casting a dark shadow over my chair. He viciously unscrewed the metal top of the shaker and tipped the glass jar upside down. He buried my plate of food under a thick, dark, suffocating layer of raw spice. The pungent smell of black pepper burned my nostrils before I even took a bite. He shoved the ruined plate back toward my chest, the porcelain sliding roughly against the polished wood.

"Eat. You don’t get to act like the victim here. You’re the one who messed up, and now you’re going to finish it. Every single bite."

My stomach churned at the sight of the ruined meal. I looked up at him, terrified of his looming physical presence towering over my chair. I picked up my fork with a shaking hand. I scooped up a small portion of the pepper-coated food and forced it past my lips. The scorching, raw spice instantly burned my throat. It felt like swallowing a handful of hot coals. The brutal heat coated my tongue and slid down my esophagus like acid. Hot, involuntary tears sprang to my eyes. A harsh cough tore through my chest. The fiery pain radiated outward, making my eyes water and my nose run. I dropped the fork and looked at the crystal pitcher of ice water sitting just out of reach in the center of the table.

"Dominic, please. I need a glass of water. Just one sip, please."

Dominic remained standing over me. He delivered an icy, unblinking glare that promised brutal retaliation. He folded his muscular arms across his chest, watching me suffer with a detached, cruel fascination.

"If you dare take even a single sip of water, I will deal with you so badly, Daphne. Don’t test me. Eat the nonsense you prepared and taste your own bitter medicine to the very end."

I picked up the fork again, my fingers trembling so hard the silver clattered against the porcelain plate. I took another agonizing bite, forcing the spicy sludge down my ruined throat. The burn intensified with every chew, sending spikes of pure pain into my sinuses. My chest heaved as I fought the urge to gag. I chewed and swallowed, trapping the whimpers of pain behind my sealed lips.

"Next time you think about being petty, remember exactly who’s in control here."

Despite the burning pain radiating through my throat, a deep-seated defiance sparked in my chest. The sheer injustice of his actions ignited a fire in my blood that matched the burning in my mouth. I refused to let him break me down to a hollow shell. I dropped the fork onto the plate and looked up, meeting his cruel gaze head-on. Tears of physical pain spilled over my eyelashes and tracked down my flushed cheeks.

"This isn’t control, Dominic. This is outright cruelty. I am not some inanimate property you bought at an auction, and I am not a mindless puppet to be manipulated and tortured."

Instead of sparking the explosive physical anger I expected, a slow, dark, admiring smile crept onto his handsome face. He tilted his head, studying my tear-stained face and heaving chest with a twisted sense of pride.

"You’re more defiant than I remember. But defiance only makes this more interesting."

He fell completely silent after that. He pulled his chair back and sat down across from me. His unyielding, predatory gaze pinned me to the chair. The silent command in his dark eyes left no room for negotiation. I was forced to systematically swallow down the agonizing, ruined food, bite by painful bite. The suffocating, fiery heat of the pepper overwhelmed my senses. My throat swelled, protesting the raw spice coating my vocal cords. I coughed, the sound harsh and wet in the quiet room.

Violent, racking coughing fits tore through my entire body. I doubled over the table, clutching my chest as my lungs screamed for clean air. The spice burned my windpipe, choking me from the inside out. I gasped, trying to pull oxygen past the swelling in my throat. Dominic did nothing to help. He sat perfectly still in his chair. He watched me choke and gasp for air with cold fascination, a king observing a peasant bleeding out for his entertainment. He rested his chin on his steepled fingers, waiting for me to finish the plate.

The lack of oxygen and the intense physical distress took their toll. My vision began to blur. The edges of the dining room warped and twisted in my sight. The opulent chandelier above us turned into a smeared streak of light. The mahogany table spun wildly around me. My body gave out, no longer able to sustain the brutal physical punishment. I slumped forward, my head drooping toward the polished wood. The edges of my sight turned black, bleeding into the center until nothing remained. Everything faded to a terrifying nothingness. My very last conscious thought was utterly consumed by the image of his cold, unmoving stare and his deeply psychotic obsession with breaking my spirit.
