The Unwilling Bride

DAPHNE

The morning of my wedding descends upon me like a suffocating fever dream. Florists rush past my open bedroom door, their arms loaded with massive bouquets of white roses. Makeup artists hover around my vanity, pulling at my dark hair and dusting powder across my pale cheeks. The house hums with frantic, high-energy preparations. Yet none of this grand spectacle feels meant for me. I sit frozen in the velvet chair. My reflection in the mirror stares back like a hollow ghost wrapped in heavy layers of silk and lace.

Vanessa leans against the bedroom doorframe. A vicious smirk stretches across her glossed lips. She watches the stylists fuss over my veil with clear amusement. She remains blind to the dread tightening around my chest like a mechanical vice.

"Dominic Mercer is quite the catch. You are one lucky bride, Daphne. The man is filthy rich and devastatingly handsome." She crosses her arms, oozing false admiration as her eyes rake over my stiff posture.

My frayed patience snaps. I cannot hold back the violent turmoil churning inside my stomach for another second. I slam my palms flat against the wooden vanity table.

"Stop saying that. Do you even realize the nightmare I am living right now? Do you have any idea what this is costing me?" I scream the questions, uncaring of the stylists who pause their brushes in shock.

Vanessa rolls her eyes. She drops her arms and steps further into my bedroom, her tone turning cold and haughty. She flips the script without an ounce of sisterly sympathy.

"You are doing this family a massive favor by marrying a business tycoon. Dad and I arranged this for your own good. Be honest with yourself, Daphne. No other man of his high status would ever willingly take someone like you."

Fury thins my eyes. I stand up so fast my heavy chair scrapes against the hardwood floor.

"If you care so much about status and respect, why aren't you the one marrying him? Why does it have to be me?" I yell back.

The bitter argument dies instantly. My mother steps into the room. Her expression is sharp, impatient, and entirely devoid of the maternal warmth I so desperately crave. She dismisses the stylists with a flick of her wrist and glares at me.

"Enough of this nonsense. Today is your wedding day. I will not tolerate ungrateful tantrums. Fix your face and get out to the car right now." She delivers the command without a single word of comfort. She points a manicured finger toward the hallway, effectively forcing me out the door and toward my doom.

Arriving at the grand venue brings no relief. Every single step I take down the long, heavily decorated aisle feels significantly heavier than the last. It is as if iron weights are chained to my ankles.

Dominic waits for me at the altar. He looks immaculate in his tailored black tuxedo. He radiates a confident, powerful aura. He looks terrifyingly sure of his absolute victory. His intense, unrelenting gaze locks onto me from the moment I appear at the back of the room. The dark stare strips away the physical distance between us, staking a public, undeniable claim on my body and soul.

I reach the altar. Dominic extends his large hand. His grip is firm and possessive as he guides me to stand beside him. The officiant turns his attention to me, asking for my vows. A fleeting, desperate urge to turn and sprint out the cathedral doors surges through my veins. But the urge is instantly frozen by the dark, looming reality of the absolute financial and social power Dominic actively holds over my father's life and my family's survival.

"Yes." I murmur the single word. It drops into the dead silence of the grand hall, sounding incredibly hollow.

Dominic’s sharp smirk softens just a fraction. He deliberately squeezes my hand, his fingers digging into my joints. The physical pressure acts as a silent, painful reminder of his relentless control over my life. He turns his head back to the officiant.

"I do." He answers with a deep, unhesitating tone.

The kiss that immediately follows seals the contract, and it holds absolutely no tenderness. It is firm, unyielding, and dominant—a dark, intensely possessive physical promise of everything that is to come in our forced life together. He pulls away. His deeply satisfied, predatory gaze sweeps over my flushed face. A violent twist of pure dread spirals straight through my stomach. The crowd erupts into thunderous applause, cementing my entrapment.

The lavish reception passes in a loud, stifling blur of flashing cameras and clinking crystal champagne glasses. The sprawling ballroom is packed to the brim with elite colleagues and wealthy business partners. Dominic practically parades me before them like a newly won, prized trophy. He refuses to give me a single inch of breathing room. His firm grip stays locked around my waist throughout the entire evening, a constant, looming presence reminding me that I am his exclusive property now.

The loud music and endless congratulations suffocate me. I desperately seek a single moment to breathe. I pull away from his side while he speaks to a potential investor. I slip away from the crowded ballroom and rush toward a quiet, dimly lit corridor near the coat check. The muffled bass of the music provides a brief illusion of safety.

I lean against the cool plaster wall, closing my eyes to steady my racing heart. The illusion shatters in an instant. Dominic materializes right beside me like a shadow. His large hand slides possessively and heavily onto my lower back. He pins me against the wall, trapping me in place.

"You’re not running away, are you, Daphne?" He drops his voice low, lacing the words with a dangerous, thrilling mix of dark amusement and a very real warning.

I stare straight ahead at his broad chest, fighting to keep my breathing even.

"I needed a break. It’s been a long day."

He leans in close, his chest brushing against my arm. He chuckles softly. The dark, deeply knowing sound vibrates straight through my skin.

"Well, it’s far from over. Tonight… we’ll begin our life together." He whispers the words directly against my ear.

The heavy, terrifying implication of his words sends a violent shiver cascading down my spine. The inescapable image of the impending wedding night crashes over my racing mind, filling me with escalating dread regarding the impending loss of my physical autonomy. I cannot formulate a single response to his blatant threat of intimacy. I push off the wall and hastily walk away down the hall. I need to put distance between us, even though my mind screams the bitter truth. There is nowhere left to hide.
