No More Running
DAPHNE
The leather seat of the limousine offers no comfort against my stiff posture. The ride away from our extravagant reception drags on in a heavy, oppressive silence. Dominic sits far too close to me on the spacious bench. The intense, almost tangible heat radiating from his large frame presses against my side, making the confined space feel suffocating. My hands are clasped tight in my lap, my knuckles turning stark white as I fight the urge to open the door and run. I keep my gaze locked on the blurred streetlamps flashing past the tinted windows, refusing to turn my head in his direction. Tonight was supposed to symbolize a fresh start in a normal marriage. Instead, an icy dread settles deep within my chest.
The smooth asphalt transitions to a rougher path. The car tires crunch against the gravel driveway, slowing to a halt. We arrive at the grand, imposing mansion designated as my new home. I peer through the dark glass. The towering stone structure looms in the moonlight, surrounded by manicured shadows. Just looking at the sprawling, fortress-like estate makes my stomach churn with severe nausea. This is the reality I am forced to step into.
Dominic steps out of the vehicle first. He plays the role of the perfect, attentive gentleman for the benefit of the driver holding the door open. He extends his hand toward me. I hesitate, staring at his outstretched palm, before placing my fingers in his. The moment his firm grip locks around my hand, a sharp shiver shoots straight down my spine.
He leads me through the towering front doors and into a massive, echoing foyer. Gleaming marble floors stretch out in every direction, reflecting the pristine light of crystal chandeliers suspended high above. The chill of the stone seems to seep through the thin soles of my shoes, traveling up my legs. It is a beautiful display of architecture and extreme wealth. But as I take in the sweeping staircases and hollow halls, it feels vast and impersonal. To me, it is nothing more than a lavish, gilded cage designed to trap its occupant rather than provide any comfort.
He does not speak a single word as he guides me up the grand staircase. Our footsteps bounce off the cold stone, echoing down a long, dimly lit corridor. He stops at the very end and pushes open a set of heavy double doors. The sprawling, opulent bedroom suite stretches out before me, bathed in muted, golden light.
My eyes lock onto the plush king-sized bed sitting in the center of the room. Rich silk sheets and thick, dark pillows cover the mattress. It feels like a terrifying, looming symbol of the intimate, non-consensual life I am forced into against my will. The air trapped in my lungs turns heavy and stale.
Dominic steps inside and pulls the heavy oak doors shut behind him. The lock engages with a soft click. In the dead silence of the bedroom, that subtle noise sounds exactly like a jail cell locking.
He turns to face me. A dark, calculating glint shines in his sharp eyes, stripping away the polite mask he wore all evening. His gaze sweeps over my trembling frame with predatory focus.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, Daphne.”
His voice is thick with unhidden anticipation, the gravelly tone vibrating through the quiet room. My chest stiffens at the raw implication. Panic floods my veins, urging me to flee. I take a frantic step backward, my lungs unable to pull in enough air to sustain my racing heart.
“Dominic… please. I can’t do this tonight.”
I whisper the words, my voice shaking with fear as I wrap my arms tight around my waist.
His expression shifts. The calm, composed facade slips away, revealing something far darker beneath the surface. It is edged with a dangerous, possessive hunger that makes my blood run cold.
“You think you have a choice?”
He asks the question softly, dropping the pitch of his voice into a lethal register. His long legs close the physical distance I just tried to create between us. He stalks toward me, closing the gap in two measured strides.
“You’re my wife now, Daphne. There’s no more running.”
“I’m not ready. I don’t want this.”
My words are laced with raw, naked desperation. I tremble under his intense stare, taking another step back until my shoulders hit the wall. I am trapped.
“You don’t need to be ready.”
He murmurs in a smooth tone, devoid of any sympathy. He reaches out. His large hand moves to touch my cheek. His thumb traces the curve of my jawline. I can see the muscle in his cheek tighten with the physical effort of holding himself back from taking more.
“You’re mine now, and you’ll learn to want this. I’ll make sure of it.”
I flinch sharply at his touch. I recoil, trying to pull my face away from the searing heat of his palm, but his reflexes are too fast. He catches my arm. His firm, insistent grip halts my retreat, locking my body in place against the wall. His thumb slowly brushes over the bare skin of my arm. The rough friction sparks a sudden, confusing shiver that I deeply resent myself for feeling. The sheer, suffocating power he holds over me physically and legally makes me want to throw my head back and scream. I stare past his broad shoulder into the desolate, shadowy corners of the room. I know there is nowhere to run.
“Please, just… give me time. I need time to adjust. Please.”
I plead with him, my voice breaking as I look up into his dark, unreadable eyes.
He stops. His dark eyes intently study my terrified face, tracking the moisture gathering on my lower lashes. His chest rises and falls with heavy, measured breaths as he stares down at me. I can see the intense battle waging behind his eyes. It is a raging war between his obvious, dark desire to take what he views as his right, and my desperate, tearful reluctance. The heavy silence stretches out for what feels like an eternity. The only sound in the room is the ragged, uneven rhythm of my breathing.
Finally, the rigid tension in his broad shoulders drops a fraction. He lets out a quiet, frustrated sigh. His fingers loosen, and he releases his iron grip on my arm. He takes a single step back, giving me an inch of breathing room.
“Fine. We’ll take it slow.”
He concedes. His voice is tight, laced with a complex emotion I can’t quite place. It sounds like deep disappointment mixed with a twisted, calculated sense of patience.
“But I’m not going anywhere, Daphne. You’ll come to me when you’re ready.”
He turns his back to me and begins to walk toward the large bed. I watch him shrug off his tailored suit jacket, the rustle of the expensive fabric echoing in the quiet space. A deep, agonizing pang of despair washes over my trembling body. I realize with terrifying clarity that this small mercy is temporary. This night is only the very beginning of a long, exhausting war. Whether I am ever ready or not, I know deep in my bones that in the end, Dominic Mercer is never going to let me go.
