A Cruel Reunion

POV: DAPHNE

The agonizing night following the confrontation with my father offered no rest. I lay awake for hours, staring at the ceiling while my mind raced with pure dread. The name Dominic Mercer echoed in the quiet space of my bedroom. He was the very boy who had tormented me without mercy throughout high school. His cruel smirk and cold laughter were scarred into my memory. Now, that same monster was branded as my destined future.

I spent the rest of the following day moving in a numb, detached daze. The world around me felt muted and gray. I walked through the grand halls of our estate, crushed beneath the weight of an inescapable, suffocating burden. My father had sold me to save his empire. That reality gnawed at my insides, turning every meal to ash in my mouth.

When evening fell, casting long, twisted shadows through the house, the inevitable moment arrived. My father summoned me to his study without warning. I walked down the corridor with leaden feet. My stomach churned with every step I took toward the heavy oak door. I pushed it open and stepped inside. The room smelled of old paper and bitter cigars. My father sat behind his desk with a brisk, businesslike efficiency.

"Your fiancé will be arriving in a few minutes to discuss the formal engagement plans. I expect you to be on your best behavior." He issued the sharp command without bothering to look up from his ledgers.

Panic surged hot and fast through my veins. The air in the room felt far too thin to breathe. I rushed over to the edge of his desk.

"Dad, please reconsider this. Is there not another way to fix the company? We can sell the summer house or downsize the assets. This isn't right. I cannot marry this man." I whispered a desperate plea, gripping the polished wood of his desk until my knuckles turned white.

My father lifted his head. He remained a wall of cold, unyielding ice.

"The arrangement is finalized, Daphne. Dominic Mercer is the ultimate solution to all our financial problems. You will fulfill your designated part in this transaction without further complaint." He firmly stated his position, dismissing my terror with a casual wave of his hand.

A sharp knock interrupted the heavy tension gripping the study. Before my father could respond, the heavy door swung open. Dominic Mercer stepped over the threshold.

The years had sharpened his once-boyish features into an imposing, tailored perfection. He was clad in an expensive dark suit that clung to his broad shoulders. He stood taller and more formidable than the teenager who used to corner me in the locker room. But his eyes remained exactly the same. Those dark, calculating eyes still held the same arrogant, terrifying glint I remembered from the school hallways.

"Mr. Winslow." Dominic greeted my father with a smooth tone, exuding an undeniable aura of power.

"Dominic. It is good to see you." My father stood up to shake his hand, looking more relieved than I had ever seen him.

Dominic accepted the handshake before slowly turning his predatory gaze straight onto me. He inspected me from head to toe, taking his time. He parted his lips and spoke with a soft, rumbling baritone.

"Daffodil."

He savored every syllable of the mocking nickname I had always despised. A phantom chill ran down my arms. I swallowed hard against the massive lump of fear forming in my throat. Every instinct screamed at me to shrink away and hide in the furthest corner of the room. Instead, I forced my shaking legs to stand tall. I locked my knees to keep from trembling in front of him.

"Yes, it has been a long time." I managed to reply, keeping my chin level.

Dominic offered a calculated, chilling smile. He stepped closer, closing the physical distance between us until I could smell his expensive cologne.

"I did not expect you to change so much. You have grown more beautiful than I remember." He made the observation with a dark, assessing look in his eyes.

The compliment deepened my severe unease. It felt like a hunter appraising his prized catch. I refused to say thank you. I just stared at the knot of his silk tie. Growing impatient with the thick, uncomfortable silence stretching between us, my father slapped his hand down on the desk.

"Daphne, take Dominic outside and show him the gardens." My father barked the order.

Resigned beneath my father's heavy glare, I turned around. I led Dominic out of the stuffy room and into the sprawling rose garden. I naively hoped the open air would ease my frantic nerves. The cool evening breeze rustled the leaves of the towering oaks, but it offered zero comfort. Surrounded by the deep shadows of the hedges, I felt the crushing weight of his unblinking gaze focused straight on me. I felt more trapped than I did indoors.

"It is strange, isn't it? After all these years, we meet again under these circumstances." Dominic's calm voice sliced through the quiet evening air.

I stopped walking and turned to face him. The moonlight cast sharp angles across his jawline.

"'Strange' isn't the word I would use." I replied with a tense tone, refusing to back down from his imposing figure.

A dark smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. He tilted his head to the side.

"Do you remember our time in high school?" He asked the question point-blank, letting the horrific memories hang between us.

I gave a tense, fearful nod. The torment, the isolation, the bullying—it was all rushing back.

He laughed softly. The sound was as chilling and hollow as I remembered from my nightmares.

"Your memory is excellent. You were always on my mind, Daffodil. Even long after we left school. The moment I discovered your family's financial predicament, I knew it was fate bringing us back together." He freely confessed his twisted motives, stepping over the crushed gravel path.

My heart pounded hard against my ribs. My breath hitched in my chest.

"Did you actually want this marriage?" I stammered, staring up at the man who had bought my life.

He closed the physical distance between us with a terrifying, predatory ease. He stopped just inches away from me. Looking down at me, he confirmed my worst fears.

"I have thought about you for years. Now, you are mine. You are mine to torment and to heal." He claimed me with a dark promise, his eyes flashing with danger.

A cold shiver ran straight down my spine. I felt stripped bare and exposed to his darkness. The cruel high school boy had grown into a ruthless billionaire, and he had orchestrated this entire nightmare just to trap me. I wrapped my arms around my waist, trying to hold myself together.

"Marriage is supposed to be about love, Dominic, not this twisted game." I forced a faint whisper into the night air.

"Who said anything about love? This arrangement is about what I want. And I always get what I want." He replied with smooth, terrifying logic, declaring his intentions.

Desperate to escape his suffocating proximity, I tried to step backward. Before my foot could even hit the ground, his hand shot out. He captured my wrist in a firm, electric, and unyielding grip. His large fingers wrapped around my fragile bones like a steel vice. I gasped, trying to yank my arm away, but he held me in place with effortless strength.

"I know you are afraid. But in time, you will see I can give you everything you have ever wanted." He murmured the words, stepping into my space until his chest brushed against my shoulder.

"I do not want any of this. Can you just give me my freedom?" I pleaded, my voice breaking as I begged him to show a shred of mercy.

Leaning in closer, his gaze burned with an intense, dark obsession. I could feel the heat radiating from his skin.

"You may not want it now, but you will." He offered a terrifying promise straight into my ear.

His heavy words hung in the night air, wrapping around my heart like an iron shackle. Standing frozen in the garden, his strong hand still gripping my fragile wrist, the horrifying reality set in. I looked past his broad shoulders, seeing nothing but the high stone walls surrounding my family's estate. There was no escape. My fate was sealed, and Dominic Mercer stood at the very center of it.
