A Calculated Entrance

Waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs stood Beta Corbin. He wore a sharp black tuxedo that matched the formal occasion. This was not Torin, her husband. The Beta extended his open hand toward her as she reached the bottom step.

Kaelia hesitated for a fraction of a second. She evaluated his utility in real time. He had not betrayed her yet in this life. Securing his public endorsement during the upcoming Council vote could prove decisive in finalizing her freedom. She needed strong political allies to ensure the impending divorce request moved smoothly. With a calculated decision, she placed her fingers onto his extended palm and allowed him to guide her forward.

"Nice dress. This is a dramatic departure from your usual modest style." Corbin offered the compliment in a smooth tone, clearly admiring her striking appearance.

"I am in the mood for major changes, Corbin." Kaelia gave him a brief, knowing smile. She lifted her chin, catching the subtle darkening of the werewolf’s eyes. He noticed the shift in her aura.

They walked out the front doors and headed toward the waiting vehicle. Kaelia felt her spirits sour instantly. A long, dark limousine idled in the paved driveway. This meant she had to endure a shared ride with Torin and Nadia.

Corbin pulled the heavy car door open and helped her slide into the plush interior. He carefully gathered the sweeping train of her wine-red silk gown and arranged it neatly near her ankles. Kaelia settled into the stitched leather seat and glanced across the cabin. Torin and Nadia sat huddled far too close together for a formal pack event.

Nadia wore a garish peach gown. The fabric was drowning in cheap, sparkling rhinestones that caught the overhead interior lights. The atrocious shade of peach clashed violently with her bright red curls, casting a bizarre orange hue over her pale skin. Kaelia swallowed a laugh. The chosen outfit was an objective disaster.

"Luna." Nadia offered an awkward, nervous greeting. The omega clung tightly to Torin’s bicep.

Torin quietly detached the girl's hands and gestured for her to fold them in her lap. He clearly wanted to avoid pushing Kaelia’s temper tonight. He possessed at least a shred of situational awareness in his wife's presence.

"Kaelia. You look breathtaking." Torin delivered the compliment with a stiff expression.

"Thanks. Corbin already told me." Kaelia responded with a perfectly practiced, fake smile.

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the group as the limousine rolled down the long driveway and exited the pack lands. The tension inside the enclosed space was palpable.

"Luna. The dress you are wearing is truly exquisite." Nadia leaned forward, her voice breaking the quiet. She clearly lacked the basic discipline to endure silent moments.

"Thank you. I have excellent taste." Kaelia gave the girl a brief, dismissive glance before resting her hands on her lap. "Yours is striking as well. I hope you enjoyed picking out your outfit first."

"You got to choose first?" Torin frowned in deep confusion. He shifted in his seat to look at his companion. "You told me the Luna generously handed you a discarded dress that nobody else wanted."

"Did you not know?" Kaelia arched an elegant eyebrow. "Nadia was incredibly frantic when she saw the designer racks. I thought it would make her happy to select whatever clothing she wanted before anyone else even looked. She claimed it was her very first time wearing custom fashion."

Nadia shrank back against the leather upholstery. She deliberately avoided the Alpha’s searching gaze. "I did not see this red dress in the collection!" she insisted in a high, innocent pitch.

"You did not bother to inspect the rest of the collection at all." Kaelia let a cool, vicious smile curl onto her lips. "You rushed up to seize the peach dress straight from my hands the second I pulled it from the hanger. You wanted what I was holding without looking at anything else. So I simply let you keep it, and here we are."

A stunned silence engulfed the car. Torin clamped his jaw shut, looking deeply conflicted by the revelation. Nadia stared down at her lap, her cheeks burning matching her bright hair. Satisfied with her flawless execution, Kaelia turned her head toward the tinted window and watched the passing scenery in absolute peace.

The journey toward the Topaz Star territory stretched into several tedious hours. Nadia eventually recovered her voice and filled the empty space by recounting harrowing tales of her past. She spun long narratives of her tragic enslavement. She claimed she was beaten constantly, starved for days on end, and treated like disposable labor by her former pack leaders. She painted a picture where even small children tormented her in the streets. According to her dramatic saga, every male she encountered wanted to drag her away and claim her against her will.

Then, she emphasized her main point. By some miraculous intervention, she had managed to preserve her virginity through years of unbridled torment. She repeated this specific claim three different times.

Corbin let out a brief, muffled snort at the sheer absurdity of the statement. Torin, on the other hand, leaned in and listened with grave sympathy. His face was a mask of rigid concern as he registered every tragic word.

Kaelia kept her gaze on the dark road and internally deconstructed the entire narrative. The glaring inconsistencies piled up faster than the miles. None of it aligned with basic werewolf reality. Even lawless rogues adhered to fundamental pack structures to survive. No self-respecting Alpha would proudly confess to abusing and starving a defenseless omega without fearing severe political blowback from neighboring territories.

Back in her previous life, Kaelia had actually attempted to fact-check the omega’s sob story. To her surprise, the formal records had matched up perfectly. She had reached out as the Luna of the Blackwood pack. Nadia's former Alpha had admitted to the mistreatment far too readily over the communication link.

Now, with sharp clarity, Kaelia realized the obvious truth. An Alpha would never freely tank his own diplomatic standing or welcome a reputation for senseless cruelty. It was a fabricated setup.

"Luna, we are here." Corbin spoke up, breaking her train of thought.

The limousine stopped outside a sprawling, brilliantly lit estate. The Topaz Star pack threw lavish events, and the imposing stone mansion served as the perfect backdrop for tonight's political theater. They exited the vehicle and moved smoothly through a basic security checkpoint at the main gates.

As they approached the entrance to the grand ballroom, Kaelia put her next maneuver into motion. She needed to enter this event alone to set the stage.

"Corbin, I left my evening clutch in the vehicle." Kaelia stopped walking and offered the Beta an apologetic smile. "Would you be so kind as to retrieve it for me? My phone is inside. I simply cannot miss any important messages in case an emergency happens at our borders while we are away."

"Of course. I will be right back." Corbin nodded and jogged quickly down the illuminated path toward the parking roundabout.

It was a calculated dismissal. Kaelia had left the bag on the leather seat on purpose. She had zero intention of walking into this massive social gathering with an escort on her arm. She needed to maximize the shock and pity factor among the visiting nobility. The sudden arrival of a prominent Luna, walking in completely abandoned by her Alpha, would strike a powerful chord.

Up ahead, two uniformed guards pulled open the tall oaken doors. Torin and Nadia stepped through the threshold together. The moment they crossed into the venue, Kaelia trailed right behind them.

She halted at the exact crown of the grand marble staircase that led down into the sprawling ballroom. Torin and his omega continued descending the stairs, completely unaware that she had stopped moving. They reached the bottom floor and began blending into the edges of the crowd.

Kaelia stood alone on the upper landing. A Luna betrayed by her husband. A Luna carrying zero embarrassment. A Luna who understood her supreme worth.

She let a serene smile grace her lips, keeping her posture tall and her chin lifted. The heavy diamonds resting on her collarbones caught the brilliant light of the crystal chandeliers hanging high above. The ballroom below was a sea of moving colors, filled with hundreds of elite werewolves clad in their finest silks and tailored suits. Heavy velvet drapes lined the towering windows, and servers carried silver trays of champagne through the dense crowd.

It did not take long for the pack nobility to notice the visual contrast at the entrance. Whispers rapidly ignited near the base of the stairs. Gasps followed in quick succession as distinguished guests realized who was standing alone at the top. Sympathetic, low growls rumbled from the chests of older, traditional Alphas who found the display deeply offensive.

Every eye in the crowded hall shifted away from the dancing couples to lock onto Kaelia. The collective murmurs blended into an intense auditory wave that washed over the massive room. The sheer scale of the attention was staggering.

Kaelia absorbed the charged energy. She basked in the collective pity and awe radiating toward her. It was time to make her move.

She placed one hand lightly on the cold marble banister. Taking a measured breath, she prepared to step forward and begin her slow, regal descent into the fray.

An earth-shattering Lycan growl tore through the ballroom.

The ferocious, dominant sound hit the walls with physical force, rattling the crystal fixtures and instantly drowning out the voices of the entire assembly.
