Silks and Deception

Kaelia slid the final stack of approved financial documents precisely across the polished mahogany desk. She offered the weary headmistress sitting opposite her a warm, genuine smile of encouragement. They had spent the last hour combing through ledgers, fighting tooth and nail to secure necessary funding for the pack’s primary school budget.

"Yes, we are done here," Kaelia declared, her voice ringing with finality and quiet triumph.

The older woman accepted the heavy stack of papers, her rigid shoulders sagging in relief. She returned a look of deep, sincere gratitude. "Thank you for this extra allocation, Luna. The children need it. You are a true blessing to the Glimmer River pack."

Kaelia maintained her easy smile while a storm of memories flooded her mind. In her previous life, this unassuming headmistress had stood fiercely by her side through the darkest, most agonizing days of her reign. When everyone else turned their backs to chase the favor of Torin’s shiny new mistress, this woman remained loyal to the end. That unwavering loyalty was the very reason Kaelia had made it her personal mission today to squeeze extra cash from the treasury for the school. She intended to reward and protect her true allies.

The headmistress rose from her chair, bowing her head in deep respect. "Luna, Alpha."

The older woman murmured the title as the heavy oak door swung inward. Torin’s broad frame filled the doorway just as the headmistress slipped past him and vanished into the busy corridor. Kaelia let her smile fade into a mask of pristine indifference. She found herself alone with her husband for the first time in days.

For the better part of a week, Kaelia had made a precise art out of avoiding Torin at every conceivable turn. The agonizing memories of her past life served as a permanent, burning warning. Every private interaction they ever shared back then had inevitably morphed into a nightmare of manipulation and heartbreak. In her past life, to salvage her remaining shreds of sanity, she had stopped seeking him out entirely. They shared tense formal meals with the senior pack members and sat side by side during mandatory strategy meetings with the Beta and Gamma. Beyond those official duties, Kaelia always found an airtight excuse to vanish. Confronting him about her magical rebirth held no tactical advantage. A brutal realization warned her that Torin would eagerly label her insane, twisting her confession into a weapon to use against her during their impending divorce when she made her play to steal her pack back.

Torin stepped fully into the sunlit office. He offered an awkward, crooked grin, clutching a massive, extravagant bouquet of blooming lilies and roses like a cumbersome shield. The silence in the spacious room thickened, stretching into the realm of suffocating tension.

"Long time no see," Torin offered in a clumsy attempt at small talk.

He took three bold steps forward, attempting to close the vast distance between them. Kaelia refused to shrink back. She remained firmly seated in her high-backed leather chair, anchoring herself in place to ensure the massive expanse of the solid desk remained a physical barricade against him. She had zero desire to share his breathing space.

"Yeah, it’s been a while. Is it about the Alpha Ball?" Kaelia threw herself back in her chair, crossing one sheer-clad leg over the other to display an aura of total nonchalance.

"Did you get my flowers?" Torin asked, gesturing vaguely to the arrangement in his hands.

The floral deliveries had been arriving relentlessly for days. He was drowning in his own unacknowledged guilt, attempting to bury his brazen transgressions under piles of fragrant petals.

"Yes, they are lovely. Thank you. So, did you come to speak about the Alpha Ball?" Kaelia forced the hollow pleasantries through her teeth, her lips curving upward into a lifeless, practiced smile.

She already knew the script. They had lived this exact conversation before. In her former life, he had cornered her in this very office to shatter her expectations and break her heart. This time, her chest housed a fortress of ice.

"Yes. It’s about Nadi... I mean, Nadia." Torin yanked aggressively at the crisp collar of his dress shirt, seeking imaginary relief from the sudden heat in the room. He hastily corrected his pet name for the omega, his jaw tightening under her unblinking stare.

"What about her?" Kaelia tilted her head slightly, projecting a masterclass in pristine, wide-eyed innocence.

Torin let out a heavy, ragged sigh and shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He stared at a spot on the wall behind her, pointedly avoiding direct eye contact. "Listen. I kind of promised her I would take her to the ball as my partner."

"Oh, really? I wonder when and how that happened?" Kaelia raised a single blonde eyebrow, mocking his cowardly delivery.

Torin cleared his throat, a dull red flush creeping up his thick neck. "It’s a long story. Please understand. My wolf is dying when she is unhappy. It is unbearable torment. Besides, she has never been to a ball like this."

"Oh, my! Should I maybe take Rocco with me? He hasn’t seen an event like this either. Come to think of it, neither has Jude." Kaelia placed a hand over her heart, issuing a dramatic, breathless gasp. She shook her head in a display of grand, fake sympathy.

She dropped the names with lethal precision. Rocco and Jude were universally renowned across the territory as the fiercest, most devastatingly handsome single warriors in the entire fighting force.

A deep, territorial growl tore its way up from Torin’s chest, vibrating through the solid floorboards. The raw display of possessive instinct brought a sharp, instantaneous surge of sardonic satisfaction to Kaelia. It served the hypocrite right.

"What is it with you lately, Kae? My Luna will not be going with someone else!" Torin slammed his free hand against the edge of her desk, leaning forward with dark, disbelieving eyes.

"Oh, but it’s okay if my Alpha goes with someone else? How is that fair?" Kaelia arched her brow even higher, reveling in the direct taunt. Torin despised being challenged on his authority.

"Maybe you should sit this one out then!" Torin snarled, his fangs flashing in warning near his bottom lip.

For the first fleeting second, genuine panic spiked in her veins. She needed this ball. Her entire strategy required her to secure political leverage and network with other Alphas.

"No, thanks. I received my own personal invitation. Besides, it’s important to mingle with other Lunas for the sake of our pack. We still need to organize our student and warrior exchanges and a couple of mating events for the over-eighteens. Or do you expect Nadia to be able to deal with all that instead of enjoying her first big event? What kind of Cinderella would she be if she had to work again?" Kaelia declined with zero hesitation, crossing her arms firmly over her chest.

Torin exhaled deeply through his flared nostrils. His broad shoulders slumped an inch. Kaelia knew immediately she had won the confrontation.

"Fine. But you will go with Corb. He is going anyway since he is the pack’s Beta." Torin grunted, pushing himself off the heavy desk.

"Now you are sucking the fun out of his life too? I am sure he has a girl to escort and impress." Kaelia allowed a genuine, cynical chuckle to escape her throat.

"He has already agreed to be your plus one. He’ll protect you there as well," Torin informed her, his tone leaving no room for further negotiation.

"How thoughtful," Kaelia remarked smoothly. She decided to accept the compromise without another fight. Ditching Beta Corbin at the venue would be child's play anyway. He would spot some visiting Alpha’s beautiful daughter, and off he would go to chase a mate.

Torin turned on his heel to leave. He paused abruptly at the door, hovering on the threshold before twisting his neck to look back at her. His expression softened into something resembling manufactured regret.

"Kae. It’s just a transition period. We will get through this, and everything will be fine." Torin offered the empty comfort, finally locking eyes with her.

He was feeding her hollow garbage. Lies.

"I will never take another Luna except for you." Torin stepped a fraction closer.

More pathetic lies.

"I still love you. It’s just that she had such a hard life, and I am not a monster. She is just a sweet, damaged girl, and she will never take your place." Torin spoke the words as if he desperately needed to believe them himself.

Nothing but a string of endless lies.

"Thank you for validating me. I needed to hear that, Tor." Kaelia nodded, stretching her lips into a sickly, compliant smile that betrayed none of her burning resentment.

"Look, when the ball is over, let’s take a day off. Just you and me. What do you think?" Torin pitched the idea with a sudden burst of eager enthusiasm.

Kaelia looked up at him in genuine, unscripted surprise. This was an unforeseen variable. A distinct deviation from their past life. Torin had never once suggested a private vacation during this chaotic phase of their marriage before.

"We’ll have to check our schedules for that, but it’s a nice idea," Kaelia managed to respond, locking down her shock behind an even broader smile.

"Then I’ll see you around?" Torin asked, his heavy features loosening in obvious relief. He looked like a man who had just dumped a massive burden off his chest.

"I am your wife, am I not?" Kaelia chuckled under her breath, watching his relaxed smile instantly die on his face.

Torin left the room in a hurried, awkward stride. A second later, Kaelia’s smartphone buzzed against the desk with a fresh notification. The pack omegas were informing her the evening gowns had finally arrived for the customary fitting.

She paused in the quiet office for a long, calculating second. Torin offering a private getaway worried her. She had actively intended to alter the timeline's disastrous events, but this particular shift was not in her meticulous plans. She pushed the unnerving thought aside and stood up.

By the time she navigated the winding halls of the pack mansion, she was fashionably late for the grand fitting. She entered the massive parlor packed full of the highest-ranking females of the inner circle. The scent of expensive perfumes and eager gossip filled the air. Tessa lounged on the plush sofas on the left, flanked by their loyal friends Natasha and Mira. The trio greeted their Luna in their usual warm, familiar manner.

On the far right side of the room, perched like a vulture, sat Jocelyn and her sycophantic minions.

Jocelyn was Torin’s younger sister. For reasons Kaelia had never fully understood, the girl had despised her since their turbulent teenage years. Jocelyn was the very first pack member to openly embrace and support Nadia’s arrival. Jocelyn acted as the bridge, happily holding the door open for the rest of the hesitant pack members to welcome and promote the evil redheaded monster.

"Bring in the dresses." Kaelia commanded firmly, projecting her authority across the divided parlor. She wanted this charade over as quickly as possible.

It was a sacred tradition of the Glimmer River pack to outfit the highest-ranking ladies together for the Alpha Ball. The pack treasury funded the chosen dresses without limit. It was crucial to display their vast wealth and refined taste to rival communities. A team of scurrying omegas rolled in dozens of heavy clothing racks carrying the most gorgeous, breathtaking evening gowns from exclusive high-end designers. Tradition dictated that the Luna selected her evening gown first. The others chose theirs subsequent to their ranks, and the rejected garments were sent back.

Kaelia already knew exactly which dress she intended to secure today, but she put on a convincing show of browsing the velvet hangers to avoid suspicion.

"What about that emerald one?" Jocelyn suggested with a fake, sugary tone, pointing to a color guaranteed to wash out Kaelia’s pale blonde hair and clash horribly with her blue eyes.

"Do you like it? It’s Zac Rosen." Kaelia pulled the green gown from the rack and pressed it against her chest with a dazzling smile.

"Beautiful!" Jocelyn sneered, her eyes glittering with open malice.

"Then I will leave it for you." Kaelia returned the vicious facial expression and kept moving down the crowded rack.

Soon enough, her fingers brushed against the prize. She remembered this specific atrocity perfectly from her past life. It was a tragic, peach-colored disaster crafted from cheap shiny fabric, featuring a bodice aggressively encrusted with an overwhelming layer of gaudy rhinestones. It looked like a fashion crime designed for a tasteless teenager. She grabbed the metal hanger and took the hideous garment with her to stand in front of the towering floor-length mirror.

Any second now.

The heavy parlor door burst open. Nadia barged into the room, issuing a high-pitched, dramatic gasp.

"Oh, my Goddess! Luna! I am so sorry! I’ll just go away so I don’t ruin your mood," Nadia cried out, shrinking against the doorframe like a beaten puppy.

She was already executing her standard manipulation playbook, heavily implying that the mere sight of her forced Kaelia into a state of irrational fury. It was a twisted mind game.

"Stay. You are going to the ball too, and you need an outfit." Kaelia smiled gently, fully aware that every female in the room was holding their breath and watching the two of them with unblinking focus.

"I already bought one with all the money you gave me. I got it at Devill’s," Nadia mumbled, staring at the floorboards.

One of Jocelyn’s mean girls snorted loudly from the sidelines. Devill’s was a bargain-bin brand catering almost exclusively to broke middle schoolers.

"This will not do. You need a dress good enough for your new status." Kaelia turned to face the room and sighed with manufactured exhaustion.

"And what is that?" Jocelyn spat out the provocative question, eager to start a public fight.

"Member of the Glimmer River pack. Look around. What do you like?" Kaelia answered without a fraction of hesitation, shooting down the trap.

A pathetic little sob emerged from the doorway, followed by a wet, timely sniffle. Every head whipped around to see Nadia crying genuine crocodile tears.

"This is so sweet! You are such a great Luna to take care of someone like me. I never had such a beautiful dress in my life! I thought I’d never have an opportunity." Nadia whined, dramatically pointing a trembling finger straight at the rhinestone monstrosity Kaelia was holding.

She burst into heavy, theatrical wailing. Kaelia clamped her jaw shut, doing her absolute best not to roll her eyes into the back of her skull.

"You can have it." Kaelia stretched her hands forward, offering the tacky peach garment toward the weeping omega.

A collective gasp of sheer shock rippled through the grand parlor.

"But Luna! You need to be the first," Mira shouted in protest, jumping up from the sofa.

"That’s fine. I saw a red one that I also liked back there. Nadia can have this one since it’s the one that moved her to tears." Kaelia shrugged her shoulders in a display of regal grace.

Nadia froze, her tear-stained face registering a spike of genuine confusion. Kaelia moved in closer, boldly pushing the tasteless peach disaster into the redhead's arms. The dress belonged at a rural village prom, not a royal gala.

"No, really. I want you to have it." Kaelia flashed a predatory smirk right into Nadia's face.

Their eyes locked. Nadia gaped like a stranded fish, the realization finally crashing down on her that she had just been expertly tricked into claiming garbage.

"Now go to your room and try it on. It will look beautiful on you." Kaelia delivered the final verbal strike with sickening sweetness. It would look hideous.

The moment Nadia scurried out of the room, Kaelia pivoted back to the clothing racks. She blindly grabbed the very first plain red sheath dress she saw.

"I’ll take this one. Choose what you like, ladies." Kaelia called out smoothly over her shoulder. She marched out of the parlor as fast as her heels allowed, with Tessa trailing hot on her heels.

They bypassed the main corridors and went straight to Tessa’s private bedroom. The instant Tessa pushed the door shut and locked the deadbolt, both women collapsed into a fit of hysterical, breathless laughter.

"Oh, my Goddess! That was fun!" Tessa gasped out, clutching her ribs.

"Indeed," Kaelia agreed, carelessly tossing the basic red decoy dress onto a nearby armchair. It was just a prop.

The real gown she planned to wear to the Alpha Ball was already hidden safely away in her master bedroom. It was a masterpiece. A breathtaking, custom off-the-shoulder gown crafted from rich wine-red silk chiffon. The luxurious fabric draped flawlessly across the chest and pulled tight at the waist in a sharp, geometric pattern before flowing out into a heavy, dramatic train. It was a royal garment built for a conquering empress. In her previous life, Kaelia had skipped ordering it because the price tag terrified her sense of budget responsibility. This time around, upon seeing it on the designer's exclusive list, she decided she did not care about saving Torin’s money.

The last time she attended this Alpha Ball, it was a waking nightmare. Nadia had paraded around in a stunning, innocent white dress, effortlessly securing the pity and sympathy of the visiting dignitaries. Meanwhile, Kaelia suffered the mocking stares of rival Lunas and the condescending pity of foreign Alphas. Coming in as the pathetic third wheel alongside her husband and his precious mate was a staggering humiliation. To make matters worse, Torin spent the entire miserable evening glued to Nadia’s side. Despite souring in a corner all evening, Kaelia had still managed to negotiate several beneficial pack treaties.

This time, she commanded the board. She knew exactly what to expect. She was going to the ball armed with intoxicating confidence. She was going to work, and she intended to secure every vote she needed for her liberation.

"Do I look nice?" Tessa broke the silence, stepping out of her attached bathroom with a massive grin.

She wore a fitted royal blue gown that hugged her curves and gorgeously complemented her dark hair and warm brown skin.

"You took one too, I see. You look spectacular." Kaelia offered an approving nod as her friend performed an elegant twirl.

The day was an unmitigated success thanks to Tessa’s covert operations. Tessa had intercepted the designer delivery before the pack omegas sorted the boxes, securing Kaelia’s wine-red masterpiece without alerting Jocelyn or the guards.

"Of course. We are leaving this pack, so I am not going to save them any money," Tessa remarked, placing her hands proudly on her hips.

"Just don’t shout about it around the mansion, okay? It’s a secret after all." Kaelia rolled her eyes in fond exasperation.

"Thanks! Shame I am not going with you. There is always next time, right?" Tessa grinned.

"When I am the Alpha, and you are my Beta, you will attend it every year." Kaelia promised in a solemn tone, throwing her a conspiratorial wink.

Hours later, the sun dipped below the horizon, cloaking the mansion in evening shadows. Kaelia sat before her massive vanity mirror, pinning the last loose curl into her sweeping updo. She stepped away from the mirror and walked out into the main expanse of her bedroom. Sitting conspicuously on a small side table, right next to a fresh bouquet of roses, rested a rectangular blue velvet box.

Kaelia’s brow furrowed. She popped the lid open. Resting against the black satin interior was a staggering, opulent cascade of diamonds. An incredibly heavy, insanely expensive diamond heirloom necklace stared back at her. Tucked inside the lid was a plain white card etched with a single word.

Sorry.

"Huh." Kaelia bit down hard on her bottom lip, a bitter taste flooding her mouth.

She remembered this exact piece of jewelry. In the previous timeline, Torin had proudly fastened these same diamonds around Nadia’s neck. Instead, he had tossed Kaelia a modest, uninspired pair of ruby earrings that she never bothered to wear. His suffocating guilt had rewritten history once again.

Now was not the time to unpack his fractured psyche. Kaelia reached into the box. The stones were freezing against her skin. She fastened the heavy diamonds securely over her bare collarbones. The jewelry served as a chilling prize of war and the perfect crowning touch to her striking ensemble.

She walked out of the room, approaching the edge of the grand staircase. The heavy wine-red silk cascaded down the carpeted stairs behind her, flowing like liquid fire. She paused on the landing, taking a brief, thrilling moment to admire the reflection of her bare shoulders and towering posture in the hall mirrors. The nervous wife was dead. A predator stood in her place.

"You look beautiful tonight." A deep male voice shattered the silence, making her flinch.
