Balcony of Shadows
Kaelia descended the wide marble staircase with measured, deliberate grace, her silk gown whispering against each polished step. Below her, the ballroom was a vast sea of silks, tailored suits, and glittering jewels, yet the hush that fell over the floor was instant. Torin turned toward the collective silence, his gaze sweeping over the crowd until his eyes landed on her. His jaw slackened. For a breath, he stared as if seeing a phantom, his pupils blown wide as he took in the low-cut silver dress clinging to her curves, the sweep of her bare shoulders, and the diamonds flashing against her throat. Beside him, Nadia froze. The smug, radiant grin on Nadia’s face vanished, replaced by an ugly scowl that clashed with the cheap peach ruffles of her gown.
Torin stepped forward, dislodging Nadia’s grip on his sleeve. As Kaelia reached the final landing, he lifted his right hand, offering an escort to his wife in a desperate bid to preserve appearances.
Kaelia did not hesitate. She kept her chin high and her eyes fixed on the horizon of the ballroom, gliding past his outstretched fingers as though he were an empty space in the hallway. Her silver train brushed against his trousers, leaving his palm hanging useless in the cold air.
A collective gasp swept through the hall, followed by a sudden burst of sharp whispers. In a room populated by werewolves, hushed voices meant nothing; every ear caught the vicious gossip rippling outward.
"Did you see that? She walked right past him."
"He brings a common stray, yet his marked Luna treats him like dirt."
"He deserved that humiliation. Look at his face."
Kaelia paid no mind to the chatter. She greeted a few familiar couples near the nearest marble pillar, offering them the polite, serene smile expected of a high-ranking Luna. They bowed their heads, their eyes gleaming with morbid curiosity, but she gave them nothing more to feed on. The opening act was done, but the evening had barely begun. She needed a stiff drink and a clear view of the floor.
As she moved toward the grand bar, her gaze wandered across the cavernous room. On the second-floor mezzanine, the private balcony normally reserved for the host, Alpha Higgins, was shrouded behind heavy white curtains. The thick fabric fell from the ceiling to the floor, concealing whatever took place behind it. Shadows moved faintly against the linen, suggesting a handful of guests who refused to mingle with the crowd below. She felt a brief flash of curiosity regarding who possessed the clout to demand such seclusion, but she pushed the thought aside. She had far more pressing business on the ground.
"Luna Blackwood."
A smooth, low baritone sounded directly behind her right shoulder.
Kaelia turned, pasting on a gracious expression. Before her stood a young Alpha she had never encountered before. He appeared to be in his late twenties, possessing the broad shoulders and hungry edge of a wolf who had clawed his way to power through raw violence.
"Good evening." Kaelia tilted her head, greeting him with a cool smile.
"Alpha Brock Langdon, Verdant Mountain pack." He offered an insolent smirk, lifting two crystal glasses from a passing server's silver tray before extending one toward her. "Champagne for the lady, brandy for me."
"I have heard your name, Alpha Langdon. The rumors regarding your sudden succession traveled fast. Challenging an elder brother and taking his seat is no small accomplishment." Kaelia accepted the flute, letting her fingers graze the chilled glass.
"Praise from a pure-blooded Luna carries real weight." He leaned closer, his hazel eyes darkening as he openly inspected her collarbones.
Before she could offer a reply, a heavy, familiar arm settled around her waist. The grip was firm and presumptuous, drawing her an inch closer to an older, broader frame.
"Kaelia, you look breathtaking tonight."
She glanced up to find Alpha Emmett looming over her left side. His dark hair was threaded with silver at the temples, and his opportunistic stare raked down the length of her gown. Across from them, Brock bared his teeth, letting loose a low, territorial rumble that vibrated against the crystal glass in his hand.
Kaelia did not pull away from Emmett's touch. A sharp thrill of amusement ran through her veins. The dynamic in the room was painfully transparent. To every unattached Alpha in this hall, she was no longer a married woman bound by unbreakable pack law. Torin’s shameless display with Nadia had signaled to the entire territory that his marriage was fractured. In their eyes, the pure-blooded daughter of the Blackwood line was practically back on the market.
In her past life, this moment had destroyed her. Back then, she had hidden herself in a dim corner of the ballroom, wearing a dull, modest dress while weeping into her glass. She had watched Torin dance with Nadia, enduring the cruel pity of her peers before fleeing early and alone, her heart shattered beyond repair.
This time, she felt no grief. Her heart remained steady, cold, and calculating. These men were looking at her with ravenous hunger, evaluating her rare silver wolf, her ancient bloodline, and her political standing. She welcomed every ounce of their focus. She was a weapon, and she intended to use their greed to rebuild everything Torin was attempting to tear down.
A thunderous growl ripped through the upper rafters of the hall.
The sheer acoustic force of the sound made the marble beneath their shoes tremble. It carried a suffocating weight, an ancient dominance so crushing that several nearby omegas dropped their heads in reflexive terror.
Emmett’s hand slid from her waist. Brock stiffened, his fingers tightening around his brandy tumbler as he searched the ceiling.
For a second, Kaelia thought Torin had finally lost his composure, but she spotted her husband clear across the hall. Torin stood beside Nadia near the fountain, looking bewildered as he offered Kaelia a cautious, apologetic glance from a distance. The sound had not come from him. Torin did not possess the lung capacity to rattle the stone walls of a fortress.
"Do not concern yourself with the noise." Another Alpha joined their small circle, swirling his drink with forced nonchalance. "It is merely the Lycans reminding us of their presence. Kaelia, your dress is a triumph. Silver suits your coloring."
"The Lycans came to an Alpha Ball?" Kaelia lifted her brows, letting genuine surprise break through her composed mask.
"Everyone was stunned when the news broke. They throw our annual invitations into the trash every year, acting as though wolf politics are beneath their notice. Yesterday afternoon, Alpha Miller received a direct order. The Lycan King himself claimed the private balcony, on the strict condition that his box remain curtained off from the floor." Brock gave a short laugh, shaking his head.
"Arrogant bastards." Emmett sneered, though he kept his voice down as he glanced toward the shrouded mezzanine. "Regardless of the monsters upstairs, Kaelia, you must save me a dance."
"I have not yet promised my card to anyone, Alpha Emmett." Kaelia smiled, savoring the competitive tension rising between the men.
"Luna Blackwood is already committed to dance with me."
Beta Corbin stepped between Brock and Emmett, his jaw set in rigid lines. His gray suit was immaculate, but his posture was wound tight as a coiled spring. He kept his eyes locked on Kaelia, refusing to acknowledge the two Alphas he had just interrupted.
Kaelia felt an instant prickle of irritation. She knew precisely why Corbin had materialized. He was acting on Torin’s unspoken orders, attempting to herd her away from foreign suitors before Torin's pride suffered another blow.
"Do not be absurd, Corbin. We agreed only to a single courtesy dance during the drive here. Once that formality is settled, I have plenty of old friends to catch up with, as well as a few new ones." She gave a light, airy laugh, throwing a pointed look toward the bachelor Alphas surrounding her.
Brock smirked, while Emmett adjusted his collar, clearly delighted by her public dismissal of her own Beta.
"I insist on claiming that courtesy dance immediately, Luna." Corbin offered his hand, his eyes practically burning with quiet fury.
"Excuse me for a moment, gentlemen. I shall return." Kaelia passed her empty champagne glass to a passing waiter and placed her palm against Corbin's sleeve.
Corbin led her onto the polished dance floor, where several couples were already moving to a slow waltz played by the string quartet. When he pulled her into the frame of the dance, his hand gripped her waist with bruising pressure.
"You are playing a dangerous game, Kaelia. Flaunting yourself before every unbonded Alpha in the room is disgraceful. You are feeding their hopes for no reason." Corbin spoke through his teeth, keeping his voice beneath the swell of the violins.
"You are overstepping your authority, Corbin. I am conversing with respected pack leaders. If my Alpha is permitted to parade his new mate around like a prized show dog, I am certainly allowed to enjoy a drink with my peers." Kaelia kept her head high, matching his glare.
"Torin made an error by bringing her here, but you understand how mate bonds operate. He will never divorce you, Kaelia. You hold the Luna title, you carry the pure bloodline, and half the pack territory belongs to your name. He needs you beside him." Corbin tightened his hold, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear.
"Then he should have thought of that before he left me to walk down the grand stairs alone." Kaelia replied coldly.
"Be reasonable for once in your life. Nadia is a biological outlet for his wolf, nothing more. She has no lineage and no authority. If your pride requires compensation, take a discrete lover from within our own warrior ranks. Keep it hidden within pack borders, and stop inviting foreign wolves into our domestic affairs." Corbin’s voice carried a disgusting tone of practical compromise.
A wave of profound revulsion settled in Kaelia’s stomach. To hear her late father’s trusted Beta reduce her marriage, her honor, and her title to such filthy, backroom arrangements was the final severance of her loyalty to this pack leadership. Corbin was not loyal to the Blackwood legacy; he was merely a loyal hound for Torin’s preservation.
"Your advice sickens me, Corbin. Keep your foul suggestions to yourself, and remember that you serve this pack because my father allowed you to wear that crest." Kaelia ripped her hand from his grip just as the final violin note resonated through the air.
She turned on her heel and slipped into the crowd without offering him a backward glance.
"Look at her, wandering off like a stray." A young woman standing near the floral arrangements sneered to her partner. "No wonder Torin brought his true mate tonight. The Luna has no shame, throwing herself at anyone with a title."
Kaelia did not even bother turning her head. The speaker was merely an unranked female brought along by an allied pack, an insignificant insect attempting to score social points. Rumors were inevitable, but whispers held no sway over legal treaties and pack law.
She bypassed the bachelor Alphas waiting near the bar and made a direct line toward the raised dais where the elder council members sat. These were men who had served beside her father during the border conflicts decades ago. They were traditionalists who respected bloodline, honor, and order. Torin had spent the last three years ignoring them, foolishly assuming their loyalty belonged to him rather than the woman carrying the Blackwood name.
"Alpha Vance, it has been far too long." Kaelia stepped forward, offering a graceful, respectful bow to the white-haired elder seated at the head of the long table.
"Kaelia, my child." The old wolf rose immediately, taking both of her hands in his weathered palms. His sharp eyes flickered toward Torin across the room before returning to her face, heavy with concern. "I saw your arrival. Your father would tear this building down if he saw that girl clinging to Torin’s coat."
"A true leader demonstrates discipline, Uncle Vance. When private impulses override duty to the pack, stability collapses. I may soon require the council to review our pack's asset distribution and regional treaties." Kaelia kept her voice low, measured, and resolute.
Vance tightened his grip on her fingers, nodding with grim satisfaction. "You have my full support, Kaelia. The Western Ridge will always answer to your father’s daughter."
Within twenty minutes, Kaelia moved between four separate tables. She spoke with Alpha Cole of the Riverbend pack, Alpha Hayes of the Ironwood territory, and Alpha Thorne of the Northern Crags. She did not shed a single tear, nor did she complain about her husband's betrayal. She spoke entirely of governance, boundary security, and council votes. By the time she stepped away from the elders' circle, she had locked in four vital commitments from the strongest Alphas on the regional council.
"You vanished before I could claim my waltz. I believe you owe me a turn on the floor, Luna Blackwood." Alpha Brock materialized at her elbow, a confident, predatory smile curving his lips.
"A promise is a promise, Alpha Langdon." Kaelia let her lips part into an easy smile, accepting his approach.
Across the crowded room, Torin was glaring straight at them. His hands were curled into white-knuckled fists at his sides, his chest heaving with silent rage. Nadia was tugging persistently on his arm, babbling about something near the banquet table, but Torin did not hear a word. His eyes were burning into Brock’s hand as it reached for Kaelia’s waist.
Before Brock’s fingers could touch her dress, a massive silhouette cut off the light.
The man who stepped between them was an absolute giant, standing close to seven feet tall with shoulders broad enough to block out the entire ballroom behind him. He was clad in a tailored black suit that did nothing to hide the lethal, coiled power running through his frame. His features were razor-sharp, his dark eyes carrying a wicked gleam beneath silver-tipped hair.
Brock recoiled instantly, his wolf snarling beneath his skin at the sudden intrusion.
Kaelia caught her breath, the man’s face clicking into place within her memory. She recognized him from a summit she had attended years ago with her father.
"Beta Vaughn?" Kaelia breathed, her voice laced with sudden wariness.
"In the flesh, little Luna. What an unexpected pleasure to cross paths in a room full of common wolves." Vaughn showed a flash of sharp white teeth, offering an exaggerated, theatrical bow.
"This is the annual Alpha Ball, where every seated Luna is required to appear. Hardly an unexpected location." Kaelia raised an eyebrow, keeping her tone cool despite the suffocating aura radiating from the giant.
"Perhaps for you. I, however, find this gathering utterly tedious. Regardless, my sovereign has noted your presence, and he demands your audience." Vaughn chuckled, a sound like grinding stones.
Brock stepped forward, his Alpha pride overriding his common sense as he placed himself between Vaughn and Kaelia. "Luna Blackwood has promised this dance to me. I will escort her to your table once our waltz is completed."
Vaughn did not shift his stance. He simply lowered his chin, his dark eyes flashing a bright, predatory gold as his aura expanded. The atmospheric pressure around them spiked, turning cold and dangerously thin.
"Step aside, pup, before I tear your throat out and feed it to the house hounds." Vaughn delivered the threat with a casual, pleasant smile.
Brock’s face drained of color. His jaw worked silently, but the overwhelming presence of a pure Lycan Beta shattered his defiance. He slowly took two steps back, lowering his eyes and yielding the floor.
"After you, Luna." Vaughn murmured, extending an arm toward the grand private staircase leading to the mezzanine.
Kaelia gathered the skirt of her gown and walked forward, keeping her head high and her pace steady. An eerie silence washed over the ballroom as the towering Lycan Beta fell into step beside her. Hundreds of wolves parted like the sea, whispering in frantic undertones as they watched her ascend the stairs. Across the floor, Torin took an impulsive step toward the staircase, his face contorted in sheer disbelief and panic, but the lethal reputation of the Lycan royal guard rooted him firmly to the floorboards.
Kaelia climbed the carpeted steps, feeling the burning weight of Torin’s stare until she reached the second-floor landing.
Vaughn stepped past her, grasping the heavy white velvet drape covering the VIP box. He pulled the fabric aside, revealing an opening into the dim, shadow-drenched interior.
"Enter." Vaughn said softly as he drew back the velvet drapery.
Kaelia stepped past the threshold. Behind her, the heavy velvet curtains dropped shut with a muffled thud, cutting off the golden light and hushed voices of the ballroom floor.
From the deepest corner of the pitch-black enclosure, a resonant growl sounded in the shadows.
