The Unthinkable Request
Clara could not bear the heavy intensity of Dante's stare for another second. She dropped her gaze to the scuffed linoleum floor of the break room.
"I am sorry. I need to get back to work."
Dante scoffed. He snatched her cracked phone off the counter and hurled it onto a nearby chair. He spun on his heel and strode out of the room. The heavy wooden door slammed shut behind him with a deafening crack that rattled the window frames.
Clara released a shaky breath she had been holding. She hurried down the sterile hallway to the staff changing room and locked the door behind her. The quiet privacy finally allowed the hot tears to spill over her lashes. She sank onto the wooden bench, pressing her trembling hands over her face. After three long years of agonizing distance, Dante Thorne had finally come to find her. He had not come to see how she was doing. He had not come to check on her well-being. He had come to demand her help in seducing her best friend. Her chest physically ached with the weight of the realization. Her secret, seven-year crush on him felt like a cruel, twisted joke.
But a broken heart was the absolute least of her problems. Stella Kensington was dating her older brother, Levi. They were deeply in love. They were already talking about their future together. Dante's arrogant demand was a nightmare scenario. She could never betray her own brother, but denying Dante always came with severe consequences.
Her shift ended at exactly five-thirty. Clara clocked out and pushed through the hospital's sliding glass doors. The oppressive July heat hit her instantly. The humid, heavy air clung to her skin as she walked briskly toward the temporary parking lot.
A sleek silver sports car blocked her path.
Dante leaned casually against the passenger door. The late afternoon sun caught the dirty blonde strands of his hair, highlighting his sharp jawline and broad shoulders. He wore a crisp, dark suit that screamed generational wealth. Seeing him standing there made Clara painfully aware of her faded jeans and worn sneakers.
She tried to sidestep the vehicle and quicken her pace toward the bus stop.
"Are you pretending you do not see me?"
Clara froze. Dante did not wait for her answer. He grabbed her arm, pulled open the door, and ushered her into the low-slung leather passenger seat before she could even formulate a protest. He shut the door firmly, trapping her inside the quiet, air-conditioned cabin.
Dante slid into the driver's seat and gunned the engine. The powerful sports car surged forward, merging seamlessly onto the bustling highway.
He wasted no time. "Tell me about Stella's schedule."
Clara stared out the window at the blurred city skyline. The Thorne and Kensington families ran in the same elite social circles. Dante had barely spared a glance for Stella in the past. This sudden, fierce interest made zero sense to Clara.
"I do not keep track of her daily routine." Clara kept her voice low and steady.
Dante drummed his long fingers on the leather steering wheel. "You two are joined at the hip. Do not play dumb with me. What does she like to do on weekends? Where does she hang out when she is not working?"
Clara squeezed her hands together in her lap. Every casual question felt like a physical blow to her ribs. Dante fired off inquiries about Stella's favorite flowers, her preferred restaurants, and her weekend hobbies. He demanded to know if she had a specific type of guy she went for, or if she preferred grand romantic gestures over subtle gifts.
Clara tried to tune out the sound of his deep voice praising another woman, but there was no escaping him in the confined space of the sports car. He remained blissfully oblivious to the devastation tearing through her chest. He did not notice her white-knuckled grip or the way she bit her lower lip to stop it from trembling. He only cared about locking down his new target.
The silver sports car slowed to a halt outside a high-end, exclusive restaurant.
Dante unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned over the center console. He finally took a good, long look at her face. He frowned, reaching out to tap her forehead.
"What is wrong with your face? Your eyes are red and puffy. If someone at that hospital is giving you trouble, you need to tell me."
Clara flinched and pushed his large, warm hand away from her skin.
"It is nothing. The workload is just stressful."
Dante let out a dry chuckle. "I warned you about medical school. You should have listened to me."
He poked her forehead again, much firmer this time. Clara instinctively tilted her head away to escape his touch. She needed to put physical distance between them before she fell apart.
Dante shook his head. A mix of frustration and arrogant amusement crossed his handsome features.
"Look at you. You are a mess. Let's go get some food."
He stepped out of the car and walked toward the restaurant entrance. He naturally assumed she would blindly follow his lead, just like she always did when they were kids. Clara stepped out of the passenger side and planted her feet firmly on the warm pavement. She did not take a single step forward.
"I am on a diet. I do not eat dinner."
Her mother had drilled one strict rule into her head since childhood: never accept favors from the Thornes. They were nothing but charity cases to the wealthy family. Her father was bound to a wheelchair. Her mother lacked a basic education. Her brother Levi grew up wearing faded hand-me-downs from Silas, Dante's older brother. Clara had moved out the second she got into medical school to escape the suffocating weight of their charity. She refused to be a burden, and she refused to owe Dante anything.
Dante stopped walking. He turned around, his brows furrowing in annoyance. He walked back to her and reached out to gently tug her arm.
"Just sit with me while I eat. I will take you somewhere fun afterward."
Clara took a swift step back, neatly dodging his grip.
"I need to go home. I have an early morning shift tomorrow."
This was not an excuse. Professor Sutton had a major surgery scheduled for the morning. As his dedicated assistant, Clara needed to be sharp, well-rested, and fully prepared. But more importantly, she knew this lavish dinner invitation was just another setup. Dante wanted to use the meal to extract more information about Stella.
Dante's face hardened. The casual amusement vanished from his dark eyes. He pressed his lips into a grim line and fixed her with a terrifying, piercing glare. The muggy summer air felt heavy, pressing down on Clara's shoulders. A low, distant rumble of thunder echoed across the graying sky.
"Get in the car. We will discuss this at home."
Clara tightened her grip on the straps of her canvas tote bag. She forced herself to meet his furious gaze.
"I rented an apartment near the hospital. I will not be going back to the manor."
Dante froze. His tall, broad frame went dangerously rigid. He narrowed his eyes and closed the distance between them with slow, measured steps. Clara fought the overwhelming urge to shrink back and surrender.
"Where is this place? Show me."
Clara dropped her gaze to his expensive leather shoes.
"There is no need for that."
Dante's hand shot out. He gripped her chin in a punishing, iron-clad hold. He forced her head up, making her look him in the eye. The cold distance in her voice ignited a volatile anger inside him.
"You have some nerve. You move out without telling anyone?"
Clara blinked rapidly, her eyelashes fluttering as she tried to ease the stinging sensation in her eyes.
"It is not proper for me to stay there anymore."
Dante let out a harsh, mocking scoff. "Are you hiding some guy in this new apartment?"
Clara shook her head as much as his vice-like grip allowed.
"I am not hiding anyone. The apartment is just closer to the hospital."
Dante released her chin with a rough, dismissive shove. Clara reached up to rub her aching jaw. She felt like a disobedient child standing on the sidewalk under his towering, dominant presence.
"Cancel the lease immediately. Pack your things and come back to the manor, or I promise you will regret it."
Clara offered him a bitter, silent smile. She had no intention of going back to the Thorne estate.
Dante's chest heaved with barely contained fury. "Look me in the eye and tell me straight up. Why won't you back me up with Stella?"
Clara bit the inside of her cheek, tasting copper.
"You have the right to pursue anyone you want. I just cannot be a part of it."
Dante stepped closer, invading her personal space. "You cannot do one simple favor for me?"
Clara kept her tone flat and final. "I am out."
Dante narrowed his dark eyes, his expression turning lethal. "Care to explain why?"
Clara stared at the cracked pavement. "Not really."
Dante reached into his suit jacket. He pulled out a small, velvet red box. Before Clara could even register the piece of jewelry, he hurled it sideways with a violent flick of his wrist. The box slammed into a metal trash can on the curb with a loud, echoing clang and dropped down into the garbage.
Clara stared at the trash can in pure shock. He had bought her a bribe. A shiny, expensive gift to buy her loyalty and secure her help in chasing Stella. The moment she stood her ground and refused, he tossed it away like worthless garbage.
Dante turned his back on her and stalked away without a backward glance.
A heavy drop of rain struck Clara's cheek. Within seconds, the dark clouds broke open. The summer storm unleashed a sudden torrential downpour. Cold, heavy sheets of rain soaked through her clothes, plastering her faded jeans to her legs. The icy water mirrored the sharp, stinging ache radiating through her chest.
Clara wiped the rain from her eyes and looked down the street. Levi's law office was just a short block away. She hugged her canvas bag tightly to her chest, gritted her teeth, and sprinted through the storm.
She reached the glass awning of a closed coffee shop next to the law firm. She stepped under the shelter, shivering as she wrung the freezing water from the ends of her hair. She looked up and saw her brother stepping out of the office building's front doors.
A genuine smile touched her lips. She opened her mouth to call his name.
Then she spotted the sleek white Mercedes parked by the curb. Stella sat in the driver's seat, smiling brightly through the windshield. Clara clamped her mouth shut. She swallowed the greeting, deciding it was best not to interrupt their rare evening together.
The wind howled, driving the rain sideways. Clara took a step backward to avoid the splashing puddles forming on the concrete.
Her back collided with a solid, unyielding wall of muscle.
A sharp gasp tore from her throat. Clara spun around and stumbled forward.
Dante stood in the shadows beneath the awning. He had silently followed her through the rain. Relief washed over Clara for a fleeting second before stark, chilling anxiety took its place.
Dante did not say a single word. He stood motionless under the shelter. Clara remained on the very edge of the awning, a single step away from the pouring rain.
He was not looking at her.
Clara traced his dark, intense stare. She turned her head and looked back toward the wet street.
Levi opened the passenger door of the white Mercedes. He leaned in, giving Stella a quick kiss before sliding into the seat.
Clara's breath caught in her throat. She stood frozen beside Dante, watching in suffocating silence as Levi climbed into the car with Stella.
