Ruthless Demand
The white Mercedes disappeared down the street, swallowed by the torrential downpour. Clara remained frozen beside Dante in the suffocating silence. She took a trembling breath and shifted her weight, intending to put more distance between them. She wanted to step back into the safety of the empty street, away from his overwhelming presence.
Before she could steady herself under the awning, Dante stepped forward. He shoved her backward.
The thrust was hard, packing a brutal force that caught her off guard. Clara lost her footing. She stumbled backward into the relentless rain and fell hard onto the abrasive pavement. Mud and icy water soaked through her clothes instantly, pasting her faded jeans to her skin. A sharp, burning sting flared across her palms as they scraped against the rough concrete. She looked up at Dante through the heavy sheets of rain, her physical pain eclipsed by pure disbelief. He had always been cold and harsh, demanding perfection and obedience at every turn. But he had never laid a hand on her. Seeing him inflict physical harm just to serve his twisted obsession with Stella exposed a terrifying new depth to his cruelty. He viewed Clara as nothing more than an obstacle to be punished.
Dante loomed over her prone figure. The shadows of the awning cast his sharp features into dangerous darkness.
"Is this why you refuse to help me?" he demanded. His voice was low and lethal, cutting through the sound of the roaring storm.
Clara gritted her teeth and pushed herself up from the muddy puddles. She walked back under the edge of the awning to escape the punishing rain. She ignored the freezing water dripping from her hair and dug into her canvas bag. She pulled out a single alcohol wipe and began cleaning the dirt and blood from her scraped palms. The stinging sensation grounded her racing mind, giving her a moment to process the sheer hostility radiating from him.
Dante let out a cold, sarcastic scoff.
"A little scrape and you act like it is a mortal wound," he sneered.
Clara tossed the dirty wipe into a nearby metal trash can. She fought back the hot sting of tears, refusing to let him see her cry. She lifted her chin and met his dangerous gaze head-on. She had to lay the situation out clearly.
"Stella is Levi's girlfriend. They are happy together, and they will be meeting our parents soon."
Dante stared at her for a split second before a sharp, mocking laugh tore from his throat. The sound was harsh and unforgiving.
"What could a poverty-stricken brother like yours possibly offer her? Stella's luxury bags alone cost a fortune."
Clara opened her mouth to defend Levi, but the words died in her throat. She was temporarily silenced by the ugly truth of his statement. She knew Levi was draining his meager law firm paychecks and skipping meals just to afford taking Stella on regular dinner dates. He was saving for months just to buy her cheap gifts. Dante possessed immense wealth, a fortune Levi could never hope to compete with. Levi worked himself to the bone just to keep their heads above water, while Dante bought expensive jewelry without a second thought.
Dante stepped closer, his imposing figure trapping her against the brick wall of the closed coffee shop.
"Set up a morning meeting with Stella for me tomorrow," he ordered.
His sheer audacity snapped Clara out of her silence. Her lingering fear evaporated, replaced by a blossoming, open defiance. Her frustration bubbled over into anger. He wanted her to betray her own brother just to satisfy his ego.
"You know she is with Levi. If you like Stella so much, you can go after her yourself," she fired back.
Dante did not flinch. Instead, his arrogance flared brighter. He looked down at her with a proud, predatory smirk.
"The fact that your brother is involved only makes me want Stella more. And the more you try to resist, Clara, the more I want your compliance."
"I will never help you."
Clara spun on her heel and dashed straight into the heavy rain. She sprinted down the flooded sidewalk without looking back.
Dante stood dry beneath the awning, smirking into the darkness. He pulled his phone from his tailored suit pocket and began typing a calculated text.
Clara trudged up the stairs to her cramped apartment. Every muscle in her body ached from the physical grind of the day and the brutal chill of the storm. She took a quick, scalding shower and threw on a faded oversized t-shirt. Her hair was still dripping wet as she flopped onto her narrow mattress and flicked off the bedside lamp.
Sleep refused to come. She tossed and turned, tangling her thin blankets into tight knots. Dante's disdainful sneer and his harsh, mocking words echoed endlessly in her mind. She was used to his overbearing nature, but his blatant threat to sabotage her brother's fragile relationship was something else. He saw Levi as a minor inconvenience, a bug to be crushed on his way to claiming his prize. The thought of Dante using his endless resources to crush her brother kept her awake until dawn. She dreaded the chaos he was about to unleash, knowing Dante never made empty threats.
The next morning, Clara walked through the sliding glass doors of the hospital. She forced a bright, eager smile onto her face. Today was supposed to be a monumental milestone. It was her very first scheduled day inside the operating room. She had studied for years just to earn this specific opportunity. She greeted the nurses at the front desk and headed straight for the surgical wing, ready to tackle whatever the day demanded.
Before she could even reach the locker room, a senior resident stopped her in the hallway. He gave her a grim, sympathetic look.
"Clara, they gave Professor Sutton's assistant gig to someone else. The director wants you in his office right now."
Ten minutes later, Clara walked out of the outpatient building. Her hands were trembling. The director terminated her medical school internship on the spot. He had offered her a pathetic excuse about budget cuts, but Clara knew the truth. The agonizing realization hit her like a physical blow to the chest. Dante had orchestrated this professional assassination. He was flexing his immense influence to back her into a corner. He intended to destroy her life piece by piece until she surrendered and handed Stella over to him.
Clara stepped out into the intense morning sun. The bright light stung her eyes and brought a sharp prickle to her nose. She gripped her canvas bag against her side, her knuckles turning white. Her heart ached for the lost career milestone she had spent years trying to achieve. All those sleepless nights studying medical textbooks meant nothing against Dante's power. Even worse, she knew this devastating news would ruin the celebratory dinner Levi had planned for her tonight. He had saved up all month to treat her to a nice meal, and now she had nothing to celebrate.
She pushed her overwhelming dread down and started the long walk home. She kept her head lowered, hiding her grief beneath the loose strands of her simple ponytail. Her outfit was unassuming and plain—gray loose-fitting pants and a crisp white top with mid-length sleeves. It was comfortable, standard wear, offering her a tiny sliver of normalcy on the worst morning of her life.
The summer heat baked the city pavement. The sun beat down without mercy, a stark contrast to the freezing storm from the night before. Clara walked with heavy steps, lost in a spiral of dark thoughts. She was consumed by the terrifying reality of her ruined future. She did not notice her surroundings. She just wanted to get back to her apartment and hide from the world.
She failed to register the gleaming silver sports car parked right against the curb on her route. The sleek, aerodynamic body of the expensive vehicle glowed like a beacon under the bright sunlight.
Dante sat in the driver's seat. One hand gripped the steering wheel, while the other held a lit cigarette near the open window. Sweat glistened on his forehead, darkening the collar of his expensive dress shirt in uneven patches.
Clara stopped short right next to the car.
Dante turned his head. His dark gaze locked onto hers.
