A Heartbreaking Favor
"Dr. Higgins, you've got company." A nurse shouted the words over the chaotic hum of the morning rush.
The plastic surgery department was a zoo during the summer months. Phones rang off the hook, rolling carts clattered against the linoleum floors, and the sharp scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the air. Clara pushed through the heavy wooden door of the staff break room, desperate for just two minutes of quiet before her next rounds. She stopped dead in her tracks, her hand still resting on the cool metal handle. The ambient noise of the busy hospital corridor instantly faded into a distant, muted buzz.
Dante Thorne stood by the frosted window.
Her foster brother. The man she had spent the last three years trying to erase from her memory. He was parked casually against the windowsill, scrolling through his smartphone. Even in the sterile, fluorescent-lit break room, he looked like he belonged on a luxury billboard. His dirty blonde hair was styled into a calculated, perfect mess. A single black diamond earring caught the harsh overhead light, projecting that effortless, untouchable bad-boy charm that always made him the center of attention wherever he went.
Dante sensed the shift in the room's atmosphere. He looked up from his screen, his dark, heavy gaze locking onto hers.
Clara felt a familiar, treacherous jolt in her chest. She had moved away for college, purposely choosing a medical program out of town to break out of the Thorne family mold. She needed physical distance from him to survive. Yet here he was, staring at her with a new, piercing intensity that made her want to avert her eyes. She held her ground, breathing in the familiar, intoxicating scent of sandalwood mixed with a sharp hint of tobacco that clung to his tailored clothes.
"Look who decided to grace us with her presence." Dante flashed a playful, devastating smile. He tucked his phone away and closed the distance between them with slow, measured steps. "The wanderer returns, and not a word to her family."
Clara turned toward the small kitchenette, forcing her hands to stop trembling. She grabbed a paper cup, desperate for any distraction. "I've been busy."
"Hey, Clara." Dante leaned against the counter right beside her, invading her space. His tone shifted, taking on a casual, hopeful note. "You and Stella still tight?"
"Always." Clara reached for the glass coffee pot, her eyes fixed on the dark liquid inside.
"Think you could put in a good word for me?" Dante watched her profile closely. "I want to ask her out."
The words slammed into Clara with the devastating force of a physical blow. Her brain short-circuited. For seven long years, she had harbored a deep, agonizing crush on Dante. Seven years of watching him from the sidelines, knowing a foster kid like her could never cross that invisible line with the golden boy of Ashbourne. She had finally started to build a life of her own, a life without him taking up every inch of her mind. And now, he was standing in her workplace, asking for her help to date her best friend. It was a cruel, twisted joke.
Her grip on the plastic handle slipped. Scalding hot coffee sloshed over the rim, pouring directly onto her exposed knuckles.
Clara gasped. The glass pot clattered onto the counter, splashing brown liquid everywhere. The burning pain was sharp and sudden, searing her skin, but it paled in comparison to the agonizing, suffocating twist in her chest.
"Clara!" Dante moved with terrifying speed.
He grabbed her wrist, dragging her a few steps over to the sink. He wrenched the metal faucet handle upward, shoving her hand under the freezing stream of water. The icy shock numbed her skin on contact. Dante stood right behind her, his solid chest brushing against her shoulder blade. He reached out with his free hand, yanking open the wall-mounted first aid kit. He dug through the supplies and pulled out a small tube of aloe vera gel.
"If you can help me with Stella, I'll give you one thing you want." Dante squeezed the green gel onto his fingers and began rubbing it gently over her reddened skin. He did not even notice the way her body tensed at his touch. "Anything. You name it."
Clara stared blindly at their intertwined hands. He was treating her burn with such meticulous care, yet his casual words were tearing her apart piece by piece. He was offering her a transactional favor to secure another woman. He had no idea how she felt about him.
"She's the one, Clara." Dante stepped back, finally letting go of her hand. His eyes shone with a ruthless, singular determination. "I'm going all in. I need you on my side."
A suffocating wave of helplessness washed over her. She wiped her wet hand on the side of her scrub pants. She had to shut this conversation down right now before she fell apart in front of him.
"Dante, I can't." Clara kept her voice firm, despite the tight, painful knot forming in her throat.
The easy warmth vanished from Dante's face in an instant. A cold, hard stare replaced his playful demeanor. The temperature in the small break room seemed to plummet to freezing.
"Why not?" Dante demanded. His voice was a harsh whip crack in the quiet room.
Clara took a cautious step back. The tension rolling off his rigid frame was palpable, a heavy pressure pressing down on her lungs.
"Stella's feelings are her own. I can't interfere with that." Clara gripped the edge of the counter for physical support.
Dante did not accept rejection from anyone. He moved toward the door, planting his large frame firmly in front of it. He crossed his arms over his broad chest, effectively trapping her inside the break room.
"Take the afternoon off. We need to talk."
Clara looked at the doorknob just inches from his hip. "I can't. I've got responsibilities here."
Dante let out a sharp, mocking snort. He closed the gap between them in two massive strides. Before Clara could even register his movement, he plunged his large hand into the front pocket of her hospital scrubs.
"Hey!" Clara tried to swat his hand away, panic flaring in her chest.
It was too late. Dante pulled out her smartphone. He grabbed her left hand in a punishing vice grip, forcing her thumb down onto the screen. The device buzzed in his palm, unlocking instantly.
"What are you doing?" Clara yanked her hand back, rubbing her wrist.
Dante ignored her. He tossed the unlocked phone onto the counter behind him, far out of her reach. He sneered, a flash of pure disdain darkening his handsome features.
"How much does an intern make in a day?" Dante looked down at her faded blue scrubs with thinly veiled disgust. "I'll spot you ten times that amount. Your day is mine now. Go get that time off."
Heat flared in Clara's cheeks, burning hot and fast. Her fists clenched at her sides. He always did this. He used his immense wealth and untouchable power to bulldoze through anyone who dared to stand in his way. To him, everything and everyone had a price tag. He was a Thorne, dripping with generational wealth, while she was just the charity case who grew up in his long shadow.
She refused to let him win this time. She was not a prop in his game.
"It's not about the money." Clara forced her chin up, meeting his furious, dark gaze head-on.
Dante's expression turned thunderous. The air between them crackled with dark hostility.
"Bold of you to defy me." He let out a low, menacing growl that sent a shiver down her spine.
The sheer force of his anger chipped away at her fragile resolve. Clara felt her hard-won courage crumbling under his stern, punishing stare. She desperately wanted to look away, to yield and submit just like she always used to do, but she forced herself to stand her ground. She was no longer that scared little girl living under his roof.
"Professor Sutton has surgeries today. I'm his assistant." Clara kept her voice as steady as she could manage, refusing to back down from the fight. "I can't just take off."
Dante loomed over Clara as she shrank under his scrutiny, his eyes narrowing into a silent, unwavering stare.
