Into the Feral Woods

I push myself off the cold floor, my bare feet aching against the polished wood. I refuse to let the crushing reality of my entrapment break my spirit. I force myself to stand, pacing the expansive, lavishly decorated chamber. I desperately try to convince myself that none of this matters. The posh surroundings, the heavy mahogany furniture, the plush carpets beneath my toes—they mean nothing. I stare out the massive glass window. The magnificent, breathtaking views of the snowcapped mountains glowing under the silver moonlight are stunning, but I will not let the beauty trick my mind. I am not stupid. I am not about to be bought off by luxurious silk sheets. I will not be locked away in a gilded cage, kept like the Alpha King's personal, submissive plaything.

To the rest of the world, Kier might be the untouchable, almighty Alpha King. They might bow at his feet and tremble at his mere presence. But to me, he remains a cold-blooded murderer. He is a tyrant who rules through fear and dark magic. If it were not for this invisible mating bond—a bond I cannot even feel yet—he would not have batted an eyelash as his cronies burned me alive at the stake. He would have watched my flesh turn to ash without a second thought.

A dark, nagging part of my mind constantly reminds me of my own sins. The thick, sticky blood currently coating my own hands. I remember the heavy thud of a man’s heartbeat fading against my palm. I killed one of his men. The memory of the copper scent of blood makes my stomach churn. My conscience whispers in the dark room, reminding me that I am a murderer as well.

I shake the thought away, rubbing my palms against my thighs as if I could wipe the phantom blood from my skin. I did what I had to do. It was desperate self-defense. I had no other choice. Had his men been civil, had they just left me alone in the woods, it never would have ended that way. I refuse to let guilt paralyze me. I need a clear head.

I simply cannot be his mate. There has to be some cosmic mistake. Throughout my entire life, I had only ever loved one man. Darius. He was supposed to be my future, the man I stood beside to lead the Obsidian Claw pack. But that bastard cruelly chose my sister over me, shattering my heart into a million irreparable pieces. He discarded me like trash. After surviving that brutal betrayal, I refuse to let this invisible, forced mating bond with Kier settle into my soul. Right now, the bond is dormant. I do not feel the golden thread tying my spirit to his. I need to leave this territory immediately, before the bond fully takes root and traps me here forever. If I wait until the bond settles, breaking it will be impossible.

For hours, I remain alone in the house. I stay hidden inside my chamber. I do not know if Kier and that arrogant blond man are still downstairs, speaking in hushed tones, or if they have left the estate. Judging by the prolonged silence, I wager they are gone. Earlier, the maids told me the Alpha King usually returns late at night, mostly around midnight. That gives me a precious window of opportunity.

When dinnertime arrives, my stomach growls. I venture out of my room just far enough to peek into the dining hall downstairs. A lavish feast is set upon the long wooden table. There are no signs of the hidden maids who prepared the food. I creep down the stairs, grab a plate, and indulge in the roasted meats and warm bread. I eat quickly, savoring every bite, knowing I will need every ounce of energy for the grueling journey ahead.

Once my hunger is satisfied, I retreat back to my chamber to meticulously prepare my escape. I approach the massive wooden armoire in the corner of the room. I pull the heavy doors open, expecting to find practical riding gear or thick winter coats. Instead, I find garments designed to mock me. I pull out the delicate, sheer clothes Kier purposefully left for me. The fabric is barely enough to cover my skin. I stare at the translucent silk and lace, my blood boiling at the sheer audacity. It is incredibly insulting. Is this his way of taunting me? Does he expect me to parade around his estate wearing nothing but these fragile rags?

Fueled by pure spite, I grip the edges of the sheer dress and pull. I tear the fragile fabrics apart, the satisfying sound of ripping silk echoing through the silent room. I shred the garments into useless strips, quietly cursing the arrogant Alpha King under my breath. I toss the ruined fabric onto the floor and give the pile a filthy, defiant gesture, imagining Kier standing there watching me do it. I will never give him the satisfaction of breaking my spirit.

I dig deeper into the back of the armoire until I finally manage to find a practical, sturdy piece of clothing suited for the harsh outdoors. Thick trousers, a durable linen shirt, a heavy leather belt, and a thick woolen cloak. I strip off my ruined clothes and quickly dress in the sturdy gear. I tie my boots tight, securing the laces. I catch my reflection in the tall mirror. Doubt starts to crawl into my veins, whispering that I will not survive the wild alone. I swallow hard and refuse to give in to the fear. I need to leave.

I wait anxiously for the large house to fall into total silence. Three hours pass. I press my ear against the thick wooden door of my chamber. Down the hall, the soft, even breathing of the maidservants confirms they are fast asleep in their quarters. The time has come.

I slowly turn the lock. The metal mechanism clicks faintly. I ease the door open and creep down the grand wooden stairs. I step lightly, praying the polished wood does not groan in protest. My heart aggressively pounds against my ribs. An intense mixture of heavy dread and thrilling adrenaline rushes through my veins. Every shadow in the house feels like a trap.

As I reach the front foyer, a small, strange part of me actually screams to stay. It begs me to turn around, walk back up the stairs, and accept the safety Kier offers. He is the most powerful Alpha in the realm. No one would ever dare touch me if I stayed by his side. But my core survival instincts demand that I run far away. Getting involved with the Alpha King is a death sentence.

I bypass the front entrance and head for the back door. The metal knob is freezing against my palm. I twist it and pull. The door creaks open. I slip silently out into the biting, freezing night breeze. The frigid air slaps my exposed face, stealing the breath from my lungs. I pull the heavy woolen cloak tighter around my shoulders.

I look down from the back porch. The massive house sits upon an elevated hill. I descend the steep stone steps, carefully moving past the meticulously trimmed gardens. The moonlight reveals healthy bushes, perfectly manicured topiaries shaped like wild beasts, and intricately carved stone statues. The garden is pristine, beautiful, and well taken care of. An absurd image flashes in my mind—Kier, the terrifying king of darkness, kneeling in the dirt tending to these flowers. I blink the ridiculous thought away. He couldn't possibly take care of this garden himself.

Peeling my gaze away from the majestic estate, my sharp eyes fix solely on the foreboding, ink-black forest looming ahead at the bottom of the hill. The dark, dense woods beckon like an open jaw, waiting to swallow me whole. It looks like a trap set for unsuspecting prey. The tree line radiates a deeply palpable, terrifying dread. One look at that suffocating darkness is enough to send any sane person running in the opposite direction. But my life has spiraled out of control, and I am far too desperate to care about sanity.

My feet tremble as I take the first step toward the tree line. The hair on the back of my neck rises. Kier had explicitly warned me about the feral wolves lurking within the shadows of those trees. But with my inner wolf, Ivory, still deeply asleep and unresponsive to my mental calls, I am merely human right now. I desperately hope my human scent won't be enough for them to sniff me out.

I plunge headfirst into the oppressive, suffocating darkness beneath the thick canopy of ancient trees. The moonlight is instantly choked out by the overlapping branches. It feels like stepping into an entirely new, dreadful world. The trees seem to lean in, their gnarled branches reaching for me like skeletal fingers. I swear I can hear the woods whispering to each other, but I force myself to believe it is just my own anxiety playing tricks on my mind.

Using my heightened eyesight, I expertly navigate over the treacherous terrain. I dodge thick, slippery roots and climb over jagged, moss-covered rocks. Earlier in the day, while exploring Kier's house, I had briefly studied a large map laid out in his study. I memorized the jagged lines of the coast. If I can just manage to survive this grueling trek and make it through these cursed woods, I can reach a bustling port city. I can board a ship, blend in with the human sailors, and sail far away from my treacherous old pack and the terrifying Alpha King. The thought of the ocean breeze fuels my determination to push my aching legs faster.

I try reaching out to Ivory one more time, probing the silent corners of my mind. Nothing. She feels locked away, trapped in a cage far out of my reach.

"I'm going to find our way out of this, Ivory. And I am going to wake you up," I mumble softly into the freezing wind, wrapping my arms tightly around my chest as I continuously push forward into the gloom.

My desperate, determined flight suddenly grinds to a horrific halt.

A sharp, unmistakable snap of a dry twig echoes directly to my right.

I freeze in my tracks. My heart stops dead in my chest. I slow my breathing to a silent crawl. I deeply sniff the freezing air. A low, terrified curse slips past my lips. Even without Ivory's presence to enhance my abilities, my basic senses are sharp enough to catch the scent.

It hits me like a physical blow. A very thick, musky, putrid smell. Sweat, primal aggression, and untamed lust. I smell the very thing I dreaded above all else: a large pack of feral male wolves currently in heat. Not just one. Many.

Why hadn't I believed Kier's strict warning? Why was I so foolish to think I could navigate this treacherous forest unscathed?

Before my brain can fully process the immense danger and brace my body for impact, a massive dark shape blurs in my peripheral vision. The attack comes with terrifying suddenness. It moves faster than the eye can track. I barely have a fraction of a second to raise my arms and shield my fragile body before the beast collides with me.

I am brutally hurled through the freezing air. The world spins in a chaotic blur of dark shadows and rushing wind. My spine slams relentlessly and agonizingly against a thick, unyielding tree trunk. A sickening crack echoes in the night. I grunt loudly in pain as I collapse heavily onto a thick bed of brittle, dried leaves. The brutal impact knocks the wind entirely from my lungs. My vision spots with black stars. The dried leaves scrape against my clammy skin.

My body screams in agony, but I refuse to stay on the ground. Ignoring the sharp, radiating aching of my severely bruised ribs and scraped legs, I forcefully push myself up. I scramble to my feet, panting heavily, tasting blood in my mouth.

Out of the deep shadows of the woods, they emerge. Massive, snarling wolves slowly close in. They step out from behind the ancient trees, their giant paws crushing the dead leaves. They surround me in numbers I cannot even begin to count in the dark. Ten, fifteen, maybe more. They form a tight, inescapable circle of fur, muscle, and malice. Their lips curl back, their fangs bared and gleaming in the faint traces of moonlight. Thick drool drips from their snapping jaws, splashing onto the forest floor.

I drop into a defensive stance, raising my trembling fists. I lock eyes with the beasts, bracing myself for the sheer brutality to come. I stand surrounded, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm as I prepare to fight for my life. I know one terrifying thing for certain: they are not going to make my death quick or easy.
