Blood in the Shadows
The circle of snarling beasts closes in. Feral male wolves, driven by the blinding heat of their rut and the raw scent of my blood, step out from behind the ancient trees. Their massive paws crush the dead leaves underfoot. I drop into a defensive stance, raising my trembling, bleeding fists in the frigid air.
I am a wolf, born with the instincts of a predator. But right now, standing in these freezing, pitch-black woods, I am nothing more than fragile prey. My inner wolf, Ivory, is gone. The bond between us is severed, leaving behind a hollow, agonizing void in the center of my mind. Without her strength, without her accelerated healing, I am just a broken girl bleeding from a series of savage, deep gashes. My right leg throbs where a branch tore through the skin earlier. My chest burns with every jagged breath, the undeniable sharp agony of cracked ribs reminding me of the brutal impact against the tree trunk.
Wolves are merciless creatures. I know this better than anyone because I grew up surrounded by them in the Obsidian Claw pack. Violence is the answer to everything in our world. Yet, I never embraced it. I hated the sight of blood. I avoided the training grounds. I bitterly regret those days now. I allowed myself to be coddled. I let myself be protected as the pampered mate of Darius, the future Alpha who threw me away like garbage. Now, stripped of my title, my pack, and my dignity, I am merely the Alpha King's escaped prisoner, fighting a losing battle for pure survival.
The ferals do not strike immediately. They pace slowly around me, forming a tight, inescapable ring. Their deep growls vibrate through the frozen earth, traveling up through the soles of my boots. They are taunting me. Two of the massive beasts step forward, their jaws snapping as thick drool hits the dirt. They are treating me like a sadistic cat playing with its dying food before the final kill. The others watch from the shadows, their eyes gleaming with sick entertainment.
"What's wrong, girl? Not up to play anymore?" one of them snickers. The sound of his voice is a harsh, guttural scrape against the howling wind. It makes my stomach churn.
They see me as a piece of meat. A disposable toy to be broken and discarded.
"Fuck off," I spit, the metallic taste of my own blood heavy on my tongue.
A chorus of twisted laughter echoes through the dense trees.
"Perhaps you're one of the Alpha King's prisoners," another wolf taunts, his massive head lowering as he stalks closer. "I wonder where you're off to when you're supposed to be in his dungeons."
My muscles scream in agony, but my brain races. I need a way out. Realizing sheer physical strength will not save me against these numbers, I attempt to wield my wits. I cannot fight fifteen feral males. I have to outsmart them.
"That's right," I challenge loudly. I force my spine straight, projecting my voice into the dark as I bluff. "The Alpha King took pleasure in making me his prisoner. I came from another pack, and I am his prized, protected possession. What do you think he will do if he finds his favored plaything like this? Attacked and wounded?"
The massive beasts hesitate for a fraction of a second. I smile inwardly as a genuine flicker of fear flashes in their glowing eyes. The Alpha King carries a reputation forged in blood and terror. A mere mention of his name sends ordinary wolves running in the opposite direction.
"He might punish me for attempting to escape," I continue, my voice echoing through the silent forest. "But one word from me about who dared to attack his property... you know him better than anyone. You reside in these woods. You are his subjects. What do you think he will do as a punishment for those who tampered with one of his belongings?"
A few of the wolves in the back whimper, taking half a step in retreat. I open my arms wide, exposing my vulnerable chest.
"Go ahead," I challenge, locking eyes with the closest beast. "Come at me. Let's see where this gets you."
The wolves glance at each other. The hesitation is palpable. For a fleeting second, I think my desperate gamble might work. I think I might survive this freezing night.
Then, the largest wolf steps forward. He raises his snout, sniffing the cold air. The fur along his spine bristles. He curls his lips back, exposing rows of yellowed, razor-sharp fangs.
"Lies," he snarls.
My confidence shatters. I blink, my breathing catching in my raw throat.
"She's spouting lies," the massive beast declares to the pack. "I can smell the Alpha King on her, but only a faint scent. That means the King hasn't spent more than an hour with this wench. She is lying."
The fragile illusion shatters into a million pieces.
I swallow hard, my pulse hammering a frantic rhythm against my bruised ribs. I drop my hands and scan the forest floor. My fingers lock around a thick, jagged piece of a fallen branch. The bark scrapes against my palm, leaving splinters in my skin. The wolf in front of me sees the movement. He grins, a terrifying, unnatural expression on his monstrous face.
He lunges forward. He moves faster than my human eyes can track. His massive body collides with mine, and I am thrown backward into the dirt. He is instantly on top of me. He sinks his razor-sharp claws deep into the fragile skin of my shoulder.
Flesh tears. I scream as the blinding agony erupts across my collarbone. Warm blood spurts from my shoulder, trailing down my neck and soaking the collar of my shirt. But I swear I will not die like this. I will not be a victim again.
I fight back with every ounce of raw adrenaline I possess. As the beast rears his head back and snarls, aiming his massive jaws for my throat, I thrust my hand upward. I drive the thick, sharp branch straight into his roaring, open mouth.
The jagged wood pierces the soft tissue of his palate. Blood splatters across my face. The wolf lets out a high-pitched, gargling shriek. He recoils, stumbling backward as the branch gets wedged deep inside his maw. The sound of his wailing is music to my ears. I push myself up off the frozen ground, my shoulder screaming in protest, blood pouring down my arm.
Before I can catch my breath, the second wolf attacks. I try to dodge, twisting my torso, but he is too fast. He lunges low, sinking his heavy teeth directly into my calf.
The fangs punch through muscle and scrape against the bone. I scream in pure, unadulterated fury. My hands blindly grasp the dirt, searching for anything. My fingers close around a heavy, jagged rock. Without a second of hesitation, I bring the stone down.
I bash the rock repeatedly right between his eyes. Bone crunches under the impact. The force causes his teeth to dig deeper into my torn flesh, sending fresh waves of torture up my leg, but I do not stop. I raise the blood-soaked stone and slam it down again. And again. I have nothing left to lose. I smash his skull until his jaw finally goes slack.
He whimpers, releasing his grip on my ruined calf. I kick his heavy body away, my chest heaving as I gasp for air.
But the severe blood loss is becoming too much for my human body to handle. The adrenaline begins to fade, replaced by a suffocating numbness. My vision blurs, the edges of the forest melting into darkness. The agonizing, empty void inside my mind where Ivory used to reside drags my consciousness down. I claw at that emptiness, begging for her strength, but there is nothing. Just silence.
My trembling legs give out. I collapse hard into the blood-soaked dirt. The ground is freezing, yet it feels dangerously comforting. I want to close my eyes. I want to let the darkness take me.
A third, massive wolf steps out from the pack. He looms over my helpless, bleeding body. He lowers his head, his hot breath fanning across my face, his jaws snapping open for my exposed throat. I don't have the strength to lift my arms. I close my eyes and prepare for the brutal end.
Suddenly, a suffocating, ancient power blankets the entire forest.
The sheer force of it freezes the very air in my lungs. Thick, majestic tendrils of dark, slick shadow magic swirl through the trees. The magic moves like living smoke, twisting like serpents around the trunks of the oaks, snapping thick branches and extinguishing the faint traces of moonlight. The power is heavy, soaked in a terrifying authority. I shiver, my bruised ribs aching as the pressure presses down on the clearing.
The feral wolves freeze. Their snarls die in their throats.
Yet, as the freezing magical shadows brush against my bleeding, wounded skin, they feel strangely comforting. The dark tendrils dance in front of my blurry vision, lingering over my torn shoulder and my mangled leg, easing the burning pain just a fraction.
Kieran Corvus steps silently into the faint starlight.
The smell of rain, ozone, and absolute power washes over me, overpowering the stench of the ferals. His presence is absolute.
"I have been too lenient with your group, and I have given you a lot of chances," Kieran states. He walks past my fallen body, his pristine, tailored suit a stark contrast to the mud and gore covering the forest floor.
The shadows follow his every step. The wolves do not dare to run. They know it would be futile. They know moving a single muscle would seal their fate.
Kieran releases another heavy blast of his dark magic across the forest. Even lying flat on the cold ground, I feel my ruined knees tremble. A primal instinct screams in my blood, begging me to bend and pay my respects to the Alpha King.
"The next time you touch any of mine shall be the last time this pack exists. Is that understood?" he commands. His voice is a lethal, vibrating baritone that shakes the earth beneath my bleeding fingers.
The crushing physical weight of his dark magic brings the entire terrified feral pack to their knees. Their aggressive snarls turn into a pathetic chorus of whimpers. They press their bellies deep into the dirt, burying their snouts in the dead leaves as they cry out their submission.
The heavy magic recedes just enough for me to draw a ragged breath. I hear his footsteps turning back toward me.
I force my eyes to stay open, staring up at him. His face is an inscrutable mask of authority. His stormy gray eyes look like a brewing tempest—ready to cause havoc, ready to destroy lives. He scans the clearing before locking his intense gaze onto my battered, bleeding body. He notes the torn flesh on my shoulder, the ruined muscle of my calf, the blood soaking the dirt beneath me. I see his jaw tick. A brief, dangerous flash of emotion crosses his face.
"You're more stubborn than I thought, little wolf," he murmurs.
Without another word, he crouches down. He slides his arms under my knees and around my back, and he gingerly scoops me up into his strong arms. The motion is careful. Tender. It is a gesture uncharacteristic of the deeply feared, ruthless Alpha King.
The heat radiating from his solid chest contrasts sharply with the freezing night air. My body begs for sleep. My heavy, drooping eyelids flutter, the blood loss threatening to pull me under. But I force them to stay open, determined not to show submission to the man who holds me captive.
"P-Put me... down," I whisper. My voice cracks, sounding weak and pathetic as the pain tears through my chest.
He scoffs. The sound is dry, arrogant, and unyielding.
"I would if I could," Kieran replies, his grip on me tightening ever so slightly. "But I know what's going on in your mind, little wolf. Nasty, nasty thoughts you have."
He halts his stride. My heart ratchets into a thunderous, frantic beat as he peers down at me. He pierces my exhausted soul with his inscrutable, stormy gaze. He reads my defiance, my hatred, my refusal to break.
His expression darkens with a dangerous, inescapable promise.
"As your punishment for trying to escape, I shall claim you tonight."
