Shadows and Figurines
The suffocating, throat-burning stench of the execution pyre vanishes, replaced instantly by the crisp, sterile air of Kieran Corvus’s home. The sudden shift in reality hits me like a physical blow. Sheer terror crashes into my ribs the second my bare soles slap against the freezing mahogany floor. The world spins, tilting dangerously on its axis. Kieran’s large hand rests firmly on my waist, an unyielding anchor keeping me upright after the teleportation, but the heat of his touch feels like a brand against my battered skin. I shove my palms hard against his chest, ripping myself away from his iron grip. Without his support, my shaking legs betray me. I lose my balance. My knees buckle, and I crash hard onto the polished floorboards. Pain shoots up my spine, rattling my teeth, grounding me in this new, terrifying reality.
I drag my gaze upward. He stands over me, an immovable mountain of a man. He shoves his hands deep into the pockets of his dark trousers. He watches me with a deeply amused, infuriating expression, his piercing ocean-blue eyes tracking the frantic rise and fall of my chest. He perfectly notes the lethal glare I shoot his way, observing how I am mentally murdering him, yet simultaneously, begrudgingly, complimenting his imposing physique in my thoughts. The sheer physical perfection of the Alpha King is undeniable, a fact that only fuels the burning rage in my gut.
"For someone who was almost burned to death, you sure are enthusiastic," Kier says, a smooth, dark hum vibrating against the walls. A wicked grin spreads across his handsome face. "It is fascinating how you kill me with your eyes, yet compliment me inside your mind."
Cold sweat breaks out across my skin as the terrifying realization of my captivity sets in. "Stop reading my mind," I hiss, my voice cracking from the smoke still coating my throat. I plant my bruised palms against the slick floor, forcing my trembling limbs to push my body upward.
"Trust me, sweetheart," he replies smoothly, stepping closer. "Your thoughts are presenting themselves to me like food on a silver platter."
I ignore his mocking advice. Panic sharpens my senses. I frantically scan the simple, yet elegant townhouse for any possible exits. Expansive, floor-to-ceiling glass windows line the left wall, offering an unbroken view of dense, towering trees and creeping shadows. There are no iron bars. No damp stone walls. No overt signs of a prison. Yet, I aggressively brace myself. My muscles coil tight, ready to fight or flee. I am convinced there are underground dungeons or blood-stained torture chambers lurking just beneath this pristine facade. I refuse to believe the Alpha King brought me here for a cozy chat.
Kier dismisses my panic and my frantic, darting gaze. He tilts his head, his dark hair shifting, and calmly reiterates his earlier, deeply impossible declaration from the smoking execution platform. "Perhaps you were too shaken to process my words properly. I am your mate."
"Bullshit," I shoot back instantly. My voice trembles, but I lace the word with pure, unfiltered defiance.
Unfazed by my venom, he gestures lazily toward the sprawling, luxurious space around us. He casually informs me that we are currently standing in his private residence, located on the far, isolated outskirts of his vast territory. He points a long, steady finger toward the heavy wooden front door, the brass handle gleaming in the dim light.
"You will notice there are barriers around this house," he claims, his tone dripping with a mockingly generous edge. "No one can enter unless I allow them to. However, you are freely allowed to walk right out that front door."
Hope flares briefly in my chest, but he lets the silence stretch before casually dropping a lethal warning.
"But I would advise you to consider that choice carefully. My more violent, feral subjects roam the surrounding dark woods. They do not appreciate uninvited guests, and they are eager to tear a stray wolf to shreds."
I step back as the invisible walls of this house suddenly feel as tight as a coffin. I reach inward, desperately seeking the familiar, fiery warmth of my wolf, Ivory. I need her strength. I need her sharp teeth and her survival instincts. But when I push past my own panic and reach for our mental bond, I find nothing but a hollow, echoing void. Ivory is gone. Panic claws at my chest, burning hotter than the pyre I just escaped.
"Where is my wolf?" I demand frantically, my voice pitching higher with every word. "Why cannot I feel her? What did you do to her?"
He easily brushes off my frantic questions with a careless wave of his hand. "There is nothing to worry about. She is merely sleeping due to my magic." He pins me with a stare that brooks no argument. "I will only let her out once I am certain you will not attempt to murder me in my sleep."
The dread spreading through my veins turns my blood to ice. "Are you saying you sleep here?" I sputter, horrified at the prospect of sharing a roof with him. "Let me go! I cannot be here!"
His feral, unapologetic smile returns, stretching wide across his face. He steps forward, closing the distance between us. He cruelly, methodically lays bare the harsh, inescapable reality I had just barely escaped.
"And where do you think you should be?" he asks, his tone devoid of pity. "Back to your pack? Where Darius, your former mate, discarded you like trash for your own sister?"
I flinch. The words strike me like physical blows, tearing open fresh, bleeding wounds I have fought so hard to bury.
"Or perhaps you wish to return to your pathetic exile?" he continues coldly. "Back to the boglands, where a lethal death sentence hangs over your neck for ripping out the heart of a skilled warrior?" He stops mere inches from me. The sheer force of his presence demands submission. "I saved your life from the flames, little wolf. You are trapped and cornered by the Alpha King himself."
Fear sinks its teeth into my bones. He is right. I am trapped.
"I do not feel the mating bond," I start to argue, determined to fight his arrogant claim. "And therefore, I cannot accept you as my mate—"
But before I can finish my sentence, a sudden, freezing, suffocating darkness silences me. The temperature in the foyer plummets, turning my breath into white mist. Without Kier even moving a single muscle, without him shifting his hands from his pockets, the shadows at his feet come alive.
Terrifying, thick tendrils of dark shadow erupt with brutal, bone-crushing force from the polished mahogany floorboards. They slither upward with lethal speed, wrapping tightly and painfully around my bare ankles. The shadowy ropes grind against my bones. More tendrils shoot up, latching onto my wrists, jerking my arms down to my sides. The magic is ancient, crushing, and overwhelmingly cold. It feels like iron chains forged in ice. The tendrils dig into my bruised flesh, restricting my blood flow and forcing a sharp gasp from my lips. My dormant wolf instincts thrash in sheer, unadulterated terror beneath my skin, screaming to break free against the overwhelming, ancient power holding me captive against the wood. The more I struggle, the tighter the shadows bind me, proving his unquestionable dominance. But the power is absolute. I cannot move an inch.
Swirling dark whisps of magic float upward, caressing my cheek with a freezing, calculated precision. Kier steps even closer. His massive chest almost brushes against me. He lowers his head, his ocean-blue eyes staring deeply into mine. He murmurs with dark, terrifying authority. "...you cannot reject the Alpha King."
Releasing his oppressive, bone-chilling magic as quickly as it appeared, the shadows snap back into the floorboards. I stumble forward, gasping for air, rubbing my wrists where the dark tendrils dug into my skin. Kier smooths his coat and smoothly announces that his maidservants will arrive shortly to help me settle into my room. He issues a final, dark warning, his eyes flashing with a dangerous promise.
"If you attempt to escape into those dangerous woods, I will be forced to claim you."
I glare fiercely at him, my chest heaving as I try to steady my racing heart. "Why cannot I feel our supposed bond? And what exactly does claiming entail?" I demand fiercely.
He only chuckles darkly, the sound vibrating through the spacious room. "I will give you those answers only when you hate me a little less."
As he confidently turns his back on me, displaying a supreme, arrogant confidence, something inside my mind snaps. Pure, unbridled fury hijacks my senses, burning away the lingering cold of his magic. Without a single thought for the consequences, I lunge toward a nearby ornate side table. My fingers wrap tightly around a small, heavy lion figurine. The cold metal feels solid in my grip. I rear my arm back and hurl the heavy object directly at his retreating form with everything I have.
*Thwack.*
The solid object smacks heavily and loudly against the back of his head. I feel a brief, gloriously satisfying rush of gratification as the metal hits its mark. The heavy object falls to the floor with a loud clatter. Kier halts. He stands perfectly still. He slowly turns his head, facing me with an unreadable expression.
Refusing to back down or show submission to the monster who just bound me, I instantly grab a second heavy figurine from the polished table, aiming it right at his arrogant, handsome face.
"I dare you, little wolf," he warns, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a lethal promise.
I bare my teeth and throw it anyway with all my might. But with a lazy, effortless flick of his wrist, his magic flares to life. An invisible pulse of energy swats the heavy projectile off its path. His magic deflects the heavy projectile straight toward the opening front door.
A loud, sickening thud echoes through the foyer. The brass figurine strikes the forehead of a newly arrived, blond-haired man stepping through the doorway. The stranger staggers back, his hands flying to his head in stunned, breathless shock. He blinks rapidly, staring at the figurine rolling on the floor, then slowly lifts his gaze to take in the chaotic scene. He stares at Kier, who remains unfazed, then turns his wide eyes to me. He takes in my furious, barefoot, and ragged, disheveled state, his eyes roaming over my torn clothes and my defensive posture.
Recovering remarkably quickly from the blow to the skull, the blond man straightens his posture. He drops one foot back and offers a gracious, exaggerated, theatrical bow.
"As much as I would like to know how there are flying figurines around here, I think I am more interested in knowing who you are, my lady," he says smoothly, his tone laced with arrogant amusement.
I grimace. Repulsed by the sudden presence of yet another conceited, arrogant man, I curl my lip in disgust. I glare fiercely at Kier. My chest tightens with a desperate, overwhelming need to escape the room, to put distance between myself and these impossible men.
Reading my desperate, overwhelming need to flee, Kier points a long finger toward the grand wooden staircase. "Your chamber is on the second floor. First door to the right," he commands calmly.
I do not hesitate. I bolt for the wooden stairs, sprinting up without looking back. I take the steps two at a time, my bare feet slapping loudly against the hard surface. I reach the upper landing and hurl myself into the bedroom, slamming the heavy wooden door shut with bone-rattling force. I immediately lock it behind me, twisting the heavy metal mechanism before my trembling knees finally give out.
Sliding down the door to the cold floor, I sit isolated and alone. I pull my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around my legs as the crushing, suffocating reality of my entrapment finally sinks into my bones. I am trapped in the house of the Alpha King.
