The Father's Ultimatum

The anxious murmurs of the gathered relatives hummed through the grand living room of the Vance mansion, filling the sprawling space with a suffocating tension. Dozens of judgmental eyes remained fixed on Lila, who sat amidst the brewing storm. She let her gaze sweep over the worried faces of her extended family before landing deliberately on Vera, who sat poised with absolute authority at the head of the seating arrangement. A calculated plan clicked into place behind Lila's eyes. In a heartbeat, she seamlessly masked her features with a fragile, deeply sorrowful look. Unshed tears swam in her eyes, making them glisten pitifully under the bright chandelier above.

"What can I do?" Lila asked, her soft, trembling voice barely rising above a whisper. "I simply cannot bring myself to fight against my own sister if Clara insists on being so cruel." She lowered her head, her delicate shoulders shaking as she played the ultimate victim. "We are family, after all. I do not want to make things difficult for my parents."

Hearing this flawless performance, Arthur slammed his heavy fist against the leather armrest of his chair. He growled in explosive anger, furious at Clara's alleged mistreatment of the supposedly innocent Lila. His face flushed red with indignation as he defended his stepdaughter.

"Why is it difficult for me?" Arthur demanded. "You treat her as your sister, but does she ever think of you as her sister? Never!"

Elias immediately stepped in. He moved directly in front of Lila, physically shielding her from the intense stares of the room. He took the full blame upon himself. His face remained grim and serious as he looked deeply into Lila's tear-filled eyes.

"Uncle Arthur, it is not her fault," Elias stated, his voice steady. "I just wish we had told Clara everything much earlier. I should not have waited that long." He turned to face the rest of the room, standing tall as a shield for the woman he loved. He loudly declared, "All the terrible grievances Lila has suffered today are because I did not handle the breakup well. The fault lies with me."

Lila stared up at him, her expression a perfect portrait of gratitude.

A light, authoritative cough cut through the heavy atmosphere. Vera sat up straighter, silencing the chaotic room in an instant. A slight, calculating smile curved her thin lips as she evaluated the young man standing before her.

"Elias," Vera pressed, her tone sharp and demanding. "Now that things have reached this critical point, and you have seen what people are saying on the internet, we cannot just cover it up anymore. What is your concrete solution regarding this massive internet backlash currently destroying our family's reputation?"

Elias stood tall, his broad shoulders squared. He offered the imposing matriarch a firm nod. "I will not let Lila suffer a moment longer. I promise to officially and publicly announce our relationship to the media."

Vera narrowed her sharp eyes, questioning the effectiveness of this hastily formed plan. "Everyone in our social circle knows you have an existing engagement," she pointed out. "Would the public truly buy the sudden switch?"

Elias tightly held Lila's hand, lacing their fingers together. His expression radiated an unwavering confidence. "While the public knows I have an engagement, very few people actually know the true identity of my fiancée." He paused, letting the dark implications of his strategy sink in. "I just need to tell the media that Lila is my fiancée. That simple lie will solve everything."

A touch of genuine joy slipped through Lila's sorrowful facade. But her brows knit together a second later. "But Clara..."

"Do not worry about Clara's compliance," Vera declared, her voice ringing with proud, chilling authority. She took immediate charge of the situation. "I will talk to her."

Vera waved a dismissive hand, cementing her executive decision with unquestionable finality. "An online announcement leaves too much room for rumors. We will announce your relationship at Lila's highly anticipated birthday party the day after tomorrow. We will handle this in a controlled environment to kill the online complications."

Elias nodded in agreement. "Understood."

"Make sure you speak with your parents as well," Vera added smoothly.

"They already agree," Elias assured her. "My parents like Lila a lot."

"Good," Vera said, her stern face showing a hint of relief. "Will you stay and have lunch with us?"

"No need, Mrs. Vance. I still have some pressing business to attend to at the company. We will visit you again soon."

"Very well. Lila, see Elias out."

Lila stood obediently, her demeanor meek. "Yes, Grandma."

The warm, supportive smile on Vera's face vanished instantly the second the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind the couple. A cold, ruthless glare replaced her pleasant demeanor. She turned her fierce gaze directly on her son.

"Call your cold-hearted daughter," Vera barked, commanding him. "Force her to come back to the mansion tonight."

Arthur stiffened under his mother's intense stare. "Yes, Mother."

...

Quiet solitude wrapped around Clara's apartment, a stark contrast to the oppressive environment she had escaped. The savory scent of her recently delivered takeout meal filled the air, promising a relaxing evening. Just as she picked up her fork, her phone suddenly rang, shattering the peaceful silence.

She glanced at the glowing screen. The caller ID flashed her father's name.

Her eyebrows knit tightly in deep disgust. Her small appetite vanished without a trace. She stared at the vibrating device for a long moment before answering.

"Dad," Clara greeted, her voice freezing and emotionless.

The moment the line connected, Arthur's thundering, furious voice exploded through the speaker. "So you know I am your dad!" he snapped sarcastically.

Clara winced, forced to pull the phone away from her sensitive ear. She placed the device on the dining table and put him on speaker, leaning back in her chair.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"When did you come back to the country?" Arthur angrily interrogated her, aggressively questioning her loyalty. "Why did you not inform me you were back? Do you still consider us your family at all?"

Clara let out a light, mocking laugh. The bitter sound filled the empty space of her kitchen.

"Mr. Vance," she coldly reminded him, "if my memory serves me correctly, I did call you the moment I returned, only to be ignored."

A heavy, embarrassed silence fell over the line.

Flustered, Arthur quickly blamed his neglect on his work. "The company has undergone heavy expansion recently. Perhaps I just forgot. I am your father, you should understand this."

He brushed off his terrible parenting without genuine remorse, immediately pivoting to demanding she return to the mansion. "Your grandmother asked you to come back for dinner tonight."

Without a second of hesitation, Clara flatly replied, "I won't go."

"Nonsense!" Arthur growled deeply into the phone, enraged by her absolute coldness and blatant defiance. "We are still a family. You shouldn't need a formal, engraved invitation to come home for a simple meal."

Clara sneered into the microphone. She brutally called out their hypocrisy.

"You never once think about me or invite me back, even during major holidays," Clara stated, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm. "Now, suddenly, you desperately want me back for dinner?" She leaned closer to the phone. "I am afraid I might be poisoned instead of fed if I step foot in that house."
