The Thirty Billion Dollar Price
Clara stared down at the red marriage certificate resting on the polished wooden table. Her breath caught in her throat. The paper felt heavy, like a physical weight pressing against her chest. The reality of her drunken mistake crashed over her in waves. Panic spiked in her veins, making her heart hammer against her ribs. The golden emblem stamped on the front of the pamphlet mocked her.
"Marriage?" she stammered, her voice shaking in the quiet room. She looked up from the document, her eyes wide and frantic. "We... How is this even possible? I was drunk last night! This doesn’t count!"
Caleb leaned back in his dining chair. His cool, unyielding gaze met her frantic eyes. A faint sneer touched the corner of his mouth, but he did not utter a single word in response to her protest. Instead, he raised his hand to the collar of his pristine white shirt. His long, elegant fingers grasped the crisp fabric. Slowly, deliberately, he unbuttoned the top button. Then he moved to the second. He pulled the cotton aside.
The movement exposed his strong, delicate collarbone. Clara froze, her breath hitching again. The pale skin of his chest and neck sat in stark contrast to the white shirt. Dense, unmistakable purple love bites and deep red scratches covered his exposed skin. The raw, visual proof of her wild aggression stared right back at her. Dark, circular hickeys overlapped with jagged fingernail lines trailing down toward his chest.
A massive rush of burning heat shot straight to Clara’s face. The undeniable evidence of their fierce night together left no room for arguments or denial. She had marked him up like a feral animal. The memories of her hands pulling him down, her mouth marking his skin, threatened to break through her shock. It took immense effort for her to stay seated instead of covering her face and sprinting out the front door.
"I..." she stuttered, desperate to undo the situation. She gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white. "I am terribly sorry. I did not mean to do that. I can compensate you. I will pay for your loss of innocence. Whatever amount you want. But this marriage... can we just tear up the certificate? Can we forget this ever happened?"
At the mention of financial compensation, the temperature in the room plummeted. Caleb's dark eyes turned icy and dangerous. A silent undercurrent shifted in his stare.
He gave a subtle cue with his chin. "Compensate my loss? Alright. Seth."
"Yes, Mr. Sinclair," his assistant replied instantly.
Seth stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway. He held a sleek iPad in his hands. He walked around the long dining table and respectfully presented the glowing screen to Clara.
"Miss Vance," Seth stated in an even tone. "This is the latest Forbes World’s Richest Single Men List. For your reference, the current price for a night with Mr. Sinclair is thirty billion dollars."
Clara’s jaw dropped open. Her eyes locked onto the screen. A sharp, crisp photograph of the man sitting across from her dominated the webpage. Beneath his stern, noble face sat his name in bold lettering: Caleb Sinclair.
The terrifying truth hit her like a bomb. This was Caleb Sinclair. He was the ruthless, mysterious heir and the chairman of Sinclair Properties. He founded Vertex International years ago, and the company rose in almost no time. Half of the domestic entertainment industry was taken by Vertex International in just two years. It was a miracle of the business world. His background was always a mystery, but his power eclipsed everything she knew.
The blood drained from her face. Thirty billion dollars was not a joke. It was a factual statement of his market worth. Realizing with crushing certainty that she could never afford the astronomical, impossible fee he commanded, her desperate protests died instantly in her throat. She snapped her mouth shut. She had no leverage here.
Seeing her forced submission, Caleb adjusted his collar. He leveled a cold, authoritative stare at her.
"I will give you three days," he commanded. "Say your final goodbyes to your past life. In three days, I will send someone to pick you up. Sinclair Mansion will permanently become your new home."
Clara stared at him, numb. She had no words left to fight him.
A short time later, a sleek silver-gray Maserati pulled up to the curb of a modest downtown apartment building. Seth placed the car in park and stepped out to open the rear door. Clara climbed out of the luxurious leather interior, offering a tight, forced smile before heading inside.
Entering her quiet, small home, she dropped her bag on the floor. She sank heavily into the worn cushions of her couch. Deep exhaustion washed over her aching body. The adrenaline from the morning faded, leaving a hollow ache in her bones. Since the previous night, too many bizarre events had piled up, leaving her operating purely on instinct. Now, the weight of it all crushed down on her shoulders.
She reached for her laptop resting on the low coffee table. Flipping the lid open, she typed Caleb's name into the search bar.
Rows of articles, financial reports, and news headlines flooded the screen. The results confirmed her worst fears. His global power, limitless wealth, and ruthless business reputation were terrifying. The media painted him as an untouchable force, a man who crushed rivals without a second thought. The sheer scale of Sinclair Properties made her head spin.
Yet, as she sat in the silence of her living room, reading through article after article, a strange, unexpected calm eventually settled over her chaotic mind.
She leaned her head back against the couch cushions. She had been betrayed by Elias. She had been disowned by her own family. She had nothing left to lose. What could a man with thirty billion dollars possibly want to take from her? He lived in a different universe. She rationalized to herself that a man of his immense stature would likely get bored. By the time the three days were up, he would change his mind, tear up the certificate himself, and forget all about her.
Pushing the suffocating worry aside, she closed the laptop. She stood up, walked to her bedroom, and changed out of the black skirt he had provided. She pulled on her own casual clothes.
It was Saturday. She did not need to report to her usual desk job. She needed to head to her small adult product store nearby. She had rented the downtown storefront two years ago. It only took five minutes to reach on foot. She did not even need to drive. While Elias had constantly belittled the venture, looking down on the goods she sold, Clara knew no legal business was inferior to another. She could not understand how it would be considered inferior to earn money by working hard. Her small shop selling adult toys and accessories remained profitable. In the past few years, she had even bought herself a small house and saved quite a lot of money running her little business. She usually let her assistant manage the daily operations during the week, but the assistant was out sick.
With her explosive breakup with Elias severing her ties to the Thorne family's PR company, Clara knew she needed a financial way out. She had to secure her income now more than ever.
Gathering her resolve, she locked her apartment door and walked down the bustling street toward her shop. As she navigated the crowded sidewalks, she pulled out her phone. She needed an exit strategy. She dialed a critical business contact to prepare her next steps.
Meanwhile, across the city, the atmosphere inside the luxurious Vance mansion was bitterly gloomy and tense.
The grand living room felt suffocating. The spacious area was packed with extended family members and friends. Vera sat at the head of the seating arrangement, her face stern and unreadable. Arthur and Sylvia stood nearby, exchanging worried glances. Elias sat close to Lila, his face grim. They hovered anxiously around the couple like a swarm of protective bees.
Bianca Thorne paced across the expensive Persian rug. Her face twisted into a nasty sneer. She crossed her arms and glared at the empty space where Clara used to stand just days ago.
"Lila, you are just too soft," Bianca fiercely declared, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. She turned to defend her brother. "You and Elias love each other. How dare Clara do such a thing to you? She called the cops on purpose! She knew exactly how sensitive Elias's professional status was. She intended to ruin him."
"Bianca is right," one of the relatives chimed in, nodding vigorously.
The gathered group began to openly tear into Clara's character. They fed off each other's anger.
"She has no shame. Breaking up with Elias and immediately hooking up with another man at a bar? What kind of decent woman does that?"
"She did it just to spite you, Lila. She knows you are a public figure and she wants to drag you down. She is a spiteful, indecent woman who just wants to hurt an innocent couple."
They spun the narrative, convincing each other that Clara was the malicious villain.
Standing amidst the chaos, one of Lila's close friends stepped forward. The friend clutched her phone, her screen displaying trending social media feeds. She urgently addressed Lila, cutting through the insults.
"Lila, you need to look at this," the friend pressed, her voice laced with deep concern. "Clara did all this because of your status in the spotlight. The online rumors are spiraling out of control."
Lila looked up from her seat next to Elias, her eyes wide and fearful.
The friend tapped the glowing screen. "It is everywhere online right now. People are accusing the Vance family daughter of seduction. They are twisting the hotel arrest. The internet says you seduced Elias and got caught by his fiancée. Worse, there are vicious rumors spreading that you are involved in severe drug use."
The living room fell dead silent. The gravity of the situation hung heavy in the air.
"Drug use?" Sylvia gasped, bringing a trembling hand to her mouth.
"The rumors spawned directly from the police raid at the hotel," the friend explained urgently. She grabbed Lila’s arm, forcing her to pay attention. "They are destroying your image. It is trending nationwide. The PR backlash is massive and it is growing by the minute."
Lila bit her lower lip, shrinking into Elias’s side and putting up a fragile look.
"You must do something drastic," the friend stated, locking eyes with Lila. "You cannot just sit here and play the victim today. You have to take immediate action to solve this escalating PR problem before it ruins your entire career."
