The Grandmother's Threat

"You!" Arthur's thunderous voice blasted through the phone speaker, vibrating against the quiet walls of the apartment. "I will ask you one last time. Are you coming back to this house or not?"

"I am not," Clara replied flatly, her tone stripped of any hesitation or apology.

"Fine! If you say so, then do not blame me when your grandmother punishes you!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking slightly as he tossed out empty threats to mask his lack of control.

Clara simply sneered into the receiver. She tapped the glowing red button on her screen, cutting off his aggressive screaming in an instant. Tossing the phone face-down onto the table, she picked up her chopsticks. Unbothered by his outburst, she calmly returned to eating her takeout meal in peace.

Miles away, inside the lavishly decorated Vance mansion, the atmosphere was a stark contrast. The grand dining room was a picture of oppressive wealth, dominated by a heavy, dark wooden table.

Arthur marched back into the room, his chest heaving and his face flushed red with humiliation. He paused near the entryway, bracing himself.

Vera sat at the head of the table, her wrinkled face hardening as she took in her son's flustered state. "Well? Did you pass on the message? Is she coming back or not?"

Arthur dragged a trembling hand over his face. "Will she even listen to a single word I say? She is grown now. She refuses to step foot in this house unless you swallow your pride and beg her yourself."

Upon hearing the news of Clara's blatant defiance, the older woman's expression darkened with pure malice. She raised her palm and slapped it hard against the heavy dining table. The loud, sharp crack echoed through the massive room, causing the fine china plates to bounce and clatter.

"Insolent!" Vera barked, her voice dripping with venom.

The sheer force of her anger sent a ripple of fear through the room. Vera had ruled the Vance family with an iron fist since the old patriarch's passing, and her position had only grown more unassailable over the years. No one dared challenge her authority.

Sylvia quickly exchanged a meaningful glance with her daughter, who sat directly across from her. Playing their roles seamlessly, the two women jumped into action as sweet, dutiful peacemakers.

Lila immediately pushed her chair back. She picked up a small porcelain bowl of warm soup and approached the furious matriarch with a sweet, worried expression. "Grandma, please do not get so angry. Your health matters the most. You cannot upset yourself over this."

Sylvia chimed in, her voice coated in artificial sugar. "Lila is right, Mother. If Clara does not want to come back, we should not force her. We can figure out another way. Please, calm down."

Vera's eyes flashed with ruthless calculation. She scoffed at the very idea of backing down, refusing to have her power undermined by a disobedient granddaughter. "Do you think it is ever up to her? I will not tolerate this. She will return tonight. I want to see how long she dares to go against me!"

She snapped her fingers, sharply summoning the long-time family butler to her side.

Simon stepped forward, bowing his head.

Vera’s voice held zero familial warmth as she delivered a ruthless, undeniable order. "Simon, find Clara. Tell her if she is not coming back tonight, I will just burn everything her mother has left her, and she will get nothing at all!"

Simon’s face paled under the harsh chandelier light. He swallowed hard. "Yes, Madam."

Late that afternoon, the golden sun cast long shadows across the pavement as Clara finished locking up the heavy metal security shutters of her adult product store. The rusted lock clicked firmly into place. She let out a soft sigh, turning around to head home.

She stopped dead in her tracks.

Standing quietly on the sidewalk just a few feet away was Simon. The old butler wore his usual immaculate suit, his hands clasped neatly in front of him. Clara knew him well. He had served the family for over a decade. Back when her mother was still alive, before her father brought Sylvia and Lila into their home, Clara and Simon had shared a deep, mutual respect. He was not exactly a close friend, but he was one of the few who treated her with genuine kindness.

Now, staring at him, Clara felt none of that past warmth. Remembering Arthur's furious phone call, she greeted the old man with an icy, pointed demeanor.

"Miss Vance," Simon said softly, stepping forward. "I have been waiting for you."

Clara looked him dead in the eye, her expression freezing over. "It has been a long time, Mr. Simon."

"Yes, it has," Simon replied, a hint of sorrow in his aging eyes. "You are getting more and more beautiful, Miss Vance. If your mother were still alive, she would certainly be very pleased."

A bitter, cynical smile touched Clara’s lips. She did not soften. Instead, she took a step closer, unleashing a piercing question that hung heavy in the crisp autumn air. "If my mother were still here, which side would you take? Would you stand with my mother, or with Sylvia?"

The sheer weight of the question hit Simon like a physical blow. He froze, stunned into a heavy, bitter silence. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words died in his throat. Unable to defend the Vance family's toxic actions or excuse his own complicity in their cruelty, he simply lowered his head, staring at the concrete beneath his polished shoes.

Clara watched his internal struggle. The silence was answer enough. She let out a light, breathy laugh, though her eyes remained cold. "Just kidding. Do not worry. Why are you here?"

Simon sighed, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his duty. "The old Mrs. Vance wants me to take you home."

Clara’s gaze hardened into glacial ice. "I will not go back. Did my father not tell you?"

"He did," Simon admitted reluctantly. He hesitated, his voice dropping to a somber whisper as he passed on the devastating threat. "But the old Mrs. Vance said... if you insist on staying away, she will take care of everything your mother left for you. She will burn it all."

Hearing the ultimatum, Clara stopped breathing. The bustling noise of the street faded into a dull ring in her ears. She realized instantly that she was cornered. Vera knew exactly where to strike. The old matriarch had resorted to the lowest form of blackmail. Those few possessions were the only physical connection Clara had left to her deceased mother. She could not bear to lose them.

Her beautiful face turned terribly gloomy. The injustice fueled a fire in her chest, anger vibrating through her tense frame. She squeezed her hands tight, her nails digging sharp half-moons into her palms.

Simon watched her struggle, his expression filled with deep pity. "Miss Vance, you have suffered quite a lot these years fighting against them. It is only a dinner. Your mother did not leave much behind. Do not regret it when it is too late."

Clara squeezed her eyes shut. She slowly and painfully released her tightly clenched fists, her fingers aching from the pressure. She forced her eyes open, locking onto Simon with a defeated, hollow look.

"Fine," she forced out a single word.

A wave of relief washed over Simon's weathered face. He nodded quickly, turning toward a sleek black sedan parked by the curb. He opened the rear door for her. "Let us go then, Miss Vance."

Clara did not say another word. She slid into the leather seat, staring blankly out the window as the car pulled away, driving her straight back into the toxic household she despised.

Meanwhile, back at the luxurious Vance Mansion, the atmosphere was distinctly different. Soft classical music played in the grand living room, mingling with the sound of light, cheerful laughter.

Sylvia and Lila sat comfortably on the plush velvet sofa, happily and leisurely browsing through thick, glossy catalogs of high-end, custom-made dresses. They were excitedly preparing for Lila's upcoming birthday party. However, this was no ordinary celebration. The massive event would double as the grand venue for Lila's secret, widely publicized engagement to Elias Thorne.

With only a couple of days left before the big night, ordering a bespoke gown was out of the question. But Lila was not worried. The public still believed it was just a birthday party. Once Elias made the announcement in front of the city's elite, no one would care what dress she wore. After spending the afternoon flipping through pages of silk and chiffon, they had finally selected a few designer pieces to be delivered for a fitting.

Their cheerful, animated chatter echoed through the expansive room, filling the space with an air of arrogant celebration.

Suddenly, the heavy front oak doors clicked and swung open, bringing their conversation to an abrupt halt.

Sylvia and Lila raised their heads simultaneously.

Clara walked in. She wore a simple, crisp white button-down shirt tucked into a pair of black tailored pencil pants that accentuated her long, slender legs. A beige trench coat draped effortlessly over her shoulders, and her dark, wavy hair tumbled down her back. Her expression was effortlessly cool, deeply aloof, and radiating a chilling aura that commanded the space.

As Lila took in Clara's striking, undeniable beauty, a sudden, sharp pang of jealousy hit her right in the chest. Lila hated that look. She hated Clara’s effortless elegance.

To Lila, Clara was nothing but a discarded outcast selling adult toys in a tiny, rundown shop, yet she walked into the mansion looking like a high-powered, untouchable aristocrat. That innate nobility was something Lila could never replicate.

However, Lila quickly soothed her bruised ego. She maliciously mocked Clara's modest, embarrassing delivery business in her mind.

You can act as noble and arrogant as you want, Lila chortled inwardly, her eyes narrowing slightly. Your little adult toy shop is nothing compared to my life. I am the famous Miss Vance. I am a popular star. And you? You were kicked out long ago.

Feeling a renewed sense of superiority, Lila straightened her posture. She quickly pasted on a wide, painfully fake smile, transforming instantly back into the sweet, innocent girl everyone believed her to be. She hopped up from the sofa and approached her half-sister.

Sylvia stood up as well, plastering on a matching smile. "Clara is here! Please, come sit down. Mrs. Tess, fetch Clara some water."

The maid hurried over with a glass, though a clear look of mockery flashed in her eyes as she set it on the table.

Clara did not even glance at the glass. She remained standing near the entryway, staring at Sylvia with eyes as cold as a frozen lake. "What do you want?"

Her blunt, icy tone made Sylvia stiffen in embarrassment.

Attempting to force an image of sisterly bonding and smooth over the tension, Lila stepped right into Clara's personal space. She reached out, trying to link her arm intimately through Clara's, acting as if they were the best of friends.

In a sickly sweet, melodic voice, Lila looked up at her and asked, "Clara, are you in a hurry? You do not come back home often. We can wait until dinner is ready. It has been a long time since we had a good chat. Why do we not just go to my room and have some talk?"

Clara did not even flinch. She coldly pulled her arm away before Lila could latch on, ignoring the superficial pleasantries. She stared Lila down, stripping away the younger woman's innocent facade with a single, contemptuous glare.

Refusing to play along with the charade, Clara aggressively shot back, her voice ringing loud and clear through the grand living room.

"Talk? What are we going to talk about? Hooking up with men?"

Lila’s fake smile instantly froze. Panic flickered in her eyes as Clara’s words struck like a whip.

Clara sneered openly at her half-sister's panicked face, ruthlessly shooting down her fake pleasantries. "Sorry, I am not interested in your nasty tricks. I don’t know how I can possibly learn them either."
