The Lingering Threat

POV: Lyra

I spend the night tossing and turning. My worn mattress offers no comfort to my exhausted body. Every time I close my eyes, my mind drags me right back to that washroom. I see his towering frame. I feel his intense gaze pinning me in place. The undeniable pull of the mate bond hums in my blood, keeping me wide awake. I stare at the ceiling, listening to the wind until the first rays of dawn creep into the room.

I drag myself out of bed and step into the shower. I turn the dial to the hottest setting. The scalding water beats down on my tired shoulders. I scrub my skin until it turns pink, hoping the heat will melt away the terror clinging to my bones. But the heavy reality refuses to wash down the drain. I have a mate.

For my entire life, I have been the despised runt of my pack. I stay in the shadows. I never imagined having a mate, nor did I ever want this sacred bond. It feels like a cruel joke. The universe decided to punish my existence by tying my fate to the most ruthless, dangerous wolf in the world.

I stand under the spray and force myself to breathe. I try to rationalize the fear squeezing my chest. The birthday celebration ended hours ago. Torin will gather his entourage and return to his distant territory today. He has more pressing matters than dealing with a nobody. He does not even know my name. He will forget my pathetic existence by the time he crosses the border. If I can just ignore this deep ache blooming in my chest, I can go back to being invisible. I cling to that fragile hope.

I turn off the water, dry off, and put on my faded clothes. I take a steadying breath and open my bedroom door.

My brief moment of hope shatters the second I step onto the landing.

I take one step toward the wooden stairs. My brother Caleb steps out of the hallway, right into my path. He does not stop, nor does he swerve to avoid me. Instead, he braces himself and shoves his broad shoulder hard against mine.

The impact knocks me off balance. My foot slips off the top step. I tumble forward into the open air.

I hit the hard, unforgiving edges of the stairs. My arm slams against the floorboards with a sickening thud. A sharp yelp of pain escapes my lips as I slide down the remaining steps. I curl inward on the floor, clutching my bruised arm.

Caleb stops at the bottom of the stairs. He towers over my small frame. He does not offer a hand. He sneers down at my prone form.

"Watch where you're going, idiot," he spits. His voice drips with pure contempt. "Do you even know how to use your eyes?"

I glance up at him, biting my cheek to keep the tears from falling. Anger and disgust twist his features. He turns his back and walks away, treating me like garbage.

A door creaks open. My mother steps out of her bedroom. She pauses on the landing. She looks down the stairs and catches full sight of my crumpled, pathetic state lying at the bottom of the steps.

I quickly scramble off the floor, dreading a harsh scolding. I wait for her to ask if I am hurt. I wait for a shred of concern.

Instead, she lets out a heavy, irritated sigh. "I don't even want to know," she mutters.

She turns around and walks away, shutting her door behind her.

Humiliation burns my throat. I push myself up, ignoring the throbbing pain. I walk into the kitchen and move in silence. I stand over the hot stove, frying eggs, toasting bread, and brewing black coffee for my ungrateful family. I set their plates on the dining table. I do not stay to join them. I scoop a meager portion of food onto a small plate and retreat to the lonely confines of my bedroom. I eat my breakfast in total isolation.

Around ten in the morning, I force myself to leave the house. The bright sunlight stings my tired eyes. I blink a few times, trying to adjust to the glare. My legs feel like lead as I walk along the dirt path. I head toward the massive, white mansion of the packhouse to begin my shift. The imposing structure sits on a hill, surrounded by sprawling green lawns.

I am running on fumes. Emotional and physical exhaustion weighs down my bones. But skipping work is not an option. Alpha Silas runs this pack with an iron fist. His demands are unforgiving. If I miss my shift, I will get fired. If I get fired, I will be thrown out onto the dangerous streets to fend for myself.

I keep my head down as I walk past the outdoor training grounds, avoiding the gaze of the warriors, and push through the heavy service doors into the back kitchen. The room is a chaotic, noisy mess of shouting cooks and clattering pans. The messy remnants of last night's grand birthday party cover every inch of the metal counters.

I spot Mabel near the prep island. She leans against the edge of the counter, looking drained.

I step closer. "Is there something I can help you with?"

Mabel lets out a heavy sigh. "There's a lot of work here today, Lyra. The birthday party ran late into the early hours of the morning. They left a massive mess. But breakfast is getting late."

I glance around. "Should I call everyone for their meals?"

"No. I already sent Mick to take care of that," Mabel says. She points a finger toward a polished silver tray resting at the end of the counter. "I need someone to deliver that to the Alpha's office. I would go, but my legs are tired from climbing up those stairs all night and morning."

I look down at the ornate tray. A bowl of fresh fruit sits next to warm bread. A silver carafe of steaming coffee rests in the center. Mabel always serves Alpha Silas his morning coffee. He refuses to eat breakfast until his housekeeper brings him this exact tray.

Eager to be helpful and avoid a scolding, I step forward.

"I'll take it," I offer.

"Okay. Come back down right away," Mabel says.

I lift the tray. The silver handles feel cold. I balance the weight carefully and push through the swinging doors into the main corridor.

The grand staircase looms ahead. The wide steps are covered in a plush carpet. I start the long trek upward. My thighs burn with every step. My bruised arm throbs in protest, but I keep my grip steady. The crystal glasses on the tray clink softly.

I pass the second floor, where the high-ranking pack wolves reside. I continue up the next flight of stairs. I reach the third floor. This level is a restricted area. It is meant exclusively for the Alpha, his immediate family, and top-tier guests.

Two burly, intimidating warrior guards stand at the end of the corridor. As I approach, their sharp eyes lock onto me. They scan my face and the silver tray with deep suspicion.

Finally, the guard on the right gives a stiff nod. He steps aside, letting me pass.

I take a steadying breath to calm my racing nerves. I stop firmly in front of the heavy mahogany door of the Alpha's office. Personal encounters with Alpha Silas are rare for someone of my low status. But whenever I am summoned, I always do exactly what I am told. I am silently grateful that he is the sole reason I am allowed to live in the pack territory at all.

I raise my knuckles and knock twice.

The sharp sound echoes in the quiet hallway.

"Come in," a muffled voice responds from inside.

I grasp the brass handle, push the heavy door open, and step quietly inside. The room is vast and imposing. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line the walls. A massive oak desk sits in the center of the room. I keep my eyes cast downward at the expensive rugs, exactly as protocol demands.

But the moment I take my second step into the room, a distinct scent hits my nostrils.

It is an overpowering, masculine scent that I recognize instantly. Dark pine mixed with rain and wild earth.

My world stops spinning.

My heart seizes in my chest. The breath leaves my lungs in a sharp rush. Every instinct in my body screams at me. The heavy silver tray shakes in my trembling hands.

Unable to control my instincts, I snap my gaze upward.

My eyes lock directly onto his.

He was supposed to be long gone. The extravagant party is over. The foreign guests are meant to be traveling far away.

But he is not gone.

He is here.

Panic suffocates me. I stare at Alpha Torin. He sits in the large leather chair directly across from Alpha Silas's desk. His dark eyes burn into mine, sharp and unreadable. The air in the room turns impossibly thick.

My mind races with sheer terror, asking the questions I cannot speak aloud.

What is he doing sitting in that chair?

Why is he still here?
