The Predators Surround
POV: Lyra
I snap my gaze downward. I keep my eyes frantically pinned to the intricate floral patterns of the plush floor rug. My world spins, but I lock my knees to stay standing.
Torin is still here. The realization crashes into me. My small body begins trembling. I can physically feel the heavy weight of his dark, intense eyes. They burn hot holes straight through my fragile frame. He sits across from Alpha Silas, motionless, but his stare carries a raw, predatory weight.
The air inside the confined office grows thick. It suffocates me. His overwhelming Alpha scent saturates every inch of the room. Dark pine. Rain. Wild earth. It claws at my throat. I feel like I am drowning in the oppressive darkness of his silent, unyielding stare.
I grip the edges of the silver tray. My knuckles turn white. The crystal glasses clink against the metal, betraying my shaking hands.
A heavy silence blankets the room. Torin says nothing. He just watches me.
Near the large window, Alpha Silas finally turns around. He remains oblivious to the silent war waging between a lowly runt and the visiting Alpha.
"Lyra," Silas says. His casual tone shatters the heavy tension.
I flinch, straightening my spine. "Yes, Alpha?"
"Go back downstairs," Silas orders. He steps away from the window, glancing between me and his guest. "Instruct Mabel to begin preparing the guest rooms. We need proper accommodations for Alpha Torin's extended stay."
My muscles lock. I bite down hard on my inner cheek. The sharp tang of copper floods my mouth, helping me fight back a loud gasp of horror.
*He's staying here.* My internal monologue screams in panic. *Why? The party is over. He should be gone.*
Silas turns his attention to Torin. "We want to ensure your IronTalon warriors are properly accommodated. Good hospitality is a priority for the Grimfang pack. I won't have your men cramped in the basic resting quarters for another night."
"I appreciate the gesture," Torin says.
His voice is a chillingly smooth baritone. It hums with deep control. Every syllable drips with hidden intent. Even as he speaks to my Alpha, his intense gaze never wavers from my trembling form. I feel stripped bare under his stare.
"My stay will only be short," Torin continues aloud. A dark shadow of a smirk plays on his handsome face. He leans forward slightly, his eyes locked on mine. "There is something very important that I need to handle here. Once that is done, we will be gone."
Every single word feels like a calculated threat. An arrow aimed directly at my chest. *Something important to handle.* Does he mean me? The memory of his suffocating presence last night flashes in my mind.
Silas nods, his jaw setting in a pleased line. He seems eager to foster this alliance, blind to the predator sitting in his own office.
"Inform Mabel right away," Silas says, waving a hand to dismiss me. "That will be all."
"Yes, Alpha."
I practically flee. I turn on my heel and rush for the heavy mahogany doors. I don't look back. I can't.
I burst out into the grand hallway. The heavy doors click shut behind me, severing me from Torin's gaze, but the relief never comes. My shaky legs carry me to the grand staircase. I practically run down the plush carpeted steps. My chest heaves. I take the stairs two at a time, desperate to put as much distance between us as possible.
My pulse drums a frantic beat in my ears. *He claimed me. He is staying to claim me.* The thought makes my stomach twist into painful knots.
I reach the ground floor and push through the swinging doors into the chaotic kitchen.
Heat, steam, and the smell of roasting meat hit me instantly. The kitchen is a whirlwind of activity. Pots clatter against stoves. Staff members shout orders over the roar of boiling water.
I lean against the cold metal counter, out of breath. I drop the empty silver tray onto the surface. My hands shake so badly I have to hide them behind my back.
Mabel spots me immediately. She wipes her flour-dusted hands on her apron and hurries over. The deep wrinkles on her forehead crease with concern.
"Lyra, what happened?" Mabel asks, keeping her voice low.
I struggle to catch my breath. I swallow the lump of fear in my throat. "The Alpha... Alpha Torin. He is staying."
Mabel's eyes widen. "Staying?"
"Yes. Alpha Silas ordered me to tell you. We need to prepare the guest rooms for Torin and his warriors for an extended stay."
"Oh, heavens," Mabel mutters, looking around the busy kitchen. "We need to double the lunch prep. The high-ranking rooms on the second floor need airing out."
Before Mabel can assign tasks, Becca swoops in. The young cook clutches a bowl of chopped carrots, her eyes gleaming with gossip. She must have overheard my breathless report.
"Did you see them?" Becca demands, cornering me against the counter. "The hot Alpha and his men? Tell me you saw them. Are they as ruthless and gorgeous as the rumors say?"
I shrink back from her eager face. The very thought of Torin paralyzes me. My skin goes cold. I remember the unyielding grip of his stare, the dark promise in his eyes.
"I... I just served drinks," I stammer. I refuse to entertain her probing questions.
"Come on, Lyra," Becca nudges my shoulder. "You're up there running errands for the VIPs. You must have gotten a good look. Give me a hint. What is Alpha Torin like in person?"
"Becca, enough," Mabel snaps.
"I just want to know!" Becca whines, shrugging her shoulders. "It's not every day the IronTalon Alpha sleeps under our roof."
"I haven't seen his men," I say quickly, staring at the floor. "Just the Alpha. That's all. Please, I don't want to talk about it."
My voice trembles. I am terrified by the mere memory of his dark eyes. The panic must be stark on my face.
Mabel steps between us. She senses my severe distress. Her maternal instincts kick in.
"Shut your mouth and get back to work," Mabel scolds Becca sharply. "Gossiping on the clock is forbidden, especially concerning our Alpha's guests. Show some respect and get those vegetables in the stew."
Becca rolls her eyes, muttering under her breath, but she retreats to her station.
Mabel turns back to me. Her gaze softens as she takes in my pale face and shaking frame. She places a warm, comforting hand on my shoulder.
"You look like you've seen a ghost, child," Mabel whispers. "I need someone to help Mick outside. Go to the expansive training grounds. Clean up the exterior. The fresh air will do you good."
She is deliberately placing me far away from the bustling, high-stress preparations inside the packhouse. I nod, silently thanking her for the mercy.
"Go on," she urges softly.
I step out the back doors. The crisp autumn air hits my face. Usually, the wide-open space of the Grimfang territory brings me peace. But today, the fresh breeze provides no relief.
Even outside, Torin's looming presence haunts my every thought. I logically know he is securely seated up on the third floor of the packhouse behind me. Yet, the phantom trace of his dark pine scent crawls under my skin. It drives me mad with an inexplicable, mounting dread. I keep glancing over my shoulder, half-expecting to see him watching me from the high windows.
I force myself to focus on the sprawling green field. The training grounds stretch out toward the dense tree line. Only a few scattered warriors linger, nursing hangovers from the grand birthday celebration.
I grab a wooden rake and a large woven basket. I work diligently. I rake piles of stray orange and red autumn leaves. I drag my rake across the frost-kissed grass, letting the rhythmic scraping sound fill my ears.
I use the mindless physical labor to distract myself. I gather discarded target posts and painstakingly organize the heavy wooden training equipment left behind by the reckless warriors. I need my muscles to burn. I need the exhaustion to drown out the terrifying memories of the previous night.
Mick works a few yards away. He hauls bags of sand, keeping me company with light chatter over the crisp breeze.
"You missed the best parts of the celebration," Mick calls out, dropping a heavy sandbag near a sparring ring. He wipes sweat from his brow. "Why did you leave so early last night?"
I keep my eyes on the ground, dragging a pile of leaves into my basket. "I was just tired, Mick. Mabel let me go back to my quarters."
"Tired? Before the midnight howl?" He raises an eyebrow. "You sure you're feeling alright today?"
"I just needed sleep," I say. I brush off his questions with the fabricated lie. I just want the conversation to end. I don't want to think about last night. I don't want to remember the shadowed hallway.
I move away from him, walking toward a cluster of discarded weapons near the archery range. I just want peace.
But my fragile bubble of peace shatters in an instant.
I step toward a heavy, dull training axe lying abandoned in the dirt near my feet. I lean forward, bending down to pick it up by its thick leather-wrapped handle.
"You. Runt."
A harsh, cruel voice snaps aggressively from directly behind me.
The malicious tone sends a spike of ice down my spine. My heart drops into my stomach. I drop the rake.
I straighten up immediately and turn around slowly to face my tormentor.
Standing over me is Gage. He is the Grimfang pack's formidable head Gamma warrior. He is a massively built man with thick arms scarred from countless battles. He is globally renowned for his unmatched, lethal skills in hunting and precision axe throwing.
Gage is not alone. He is closely flanked by Gideon, the pack's head Delta warrior.
Both men step forward, blocking the autumn sun. They tower over my small frame. Their broad shoulders cast long, dark shadows over me. Their faces are twisted with expressions of cold, undisguised disdain. They look at me like I am an insect dirtying their training grounds.
Gage's dark eyes narrow with cruelty. He doesn't see a pack member. He only sees a vulnerable runt.
Without an ounce of hesitation, Gage raises a thick, calloused finger. He points directly at the heavy training weapon resting by my boots.
He issues a terrifying, non-negotiable command.
"Pick that up and come with us to the range," Gage demands. An evil smirk twists his scarred features. "We need a target."
