Cornered by Fate
POV: Lyra
My spine hits the edge of the cold marble sink. The hard stone digs painfully into my lower back, but I barely register the sting. There is nowhere left to hide. There is nowhere to run. The small, cramped back washroom shrinks around me, the walls pressing in as his massive frame eats up every inch of available space. He steps closer, closing the final gap and cornering me without hesitation. His broad chest hovers just inches from mine. I can feel the radiating heat of his body warming my cold, trembling skin. His face is positioned so intimately close to mine that I feel the warmth of his breath dusting my cheeks, sending a cascade of terrifying shivers over my neck.
Thick, potent, and suffocating, his intoxicating, powerful scent saturates the air. Pine, rain, and raw dominance. It floods my senses, overpowering the sterile smell of the bathroom bleach and making my head spin dizzily. My knees threaten to buckle under the sheer weight of his presence.
Trembling from head to toe, I force my voice past the tight, heavy lump of fear in my throat. "What are you doing here?" I ask.
He doesn't blink. He doesn't waste time with pleasantries or evasions. His dark gaze pins me in place.
"You are my mate."
The words leave his lips in a deep, rough, and raspy gravel. They carry the undeniable certainty of an apex predator claiming its prize.
"No," I blurt out. My immediate reaction is pure denial. It tastes like panic on my tongue. I shake my head from side to side in a desperate attempt to physically reject his words, my hands gripping the edge of the sink until my knuckles ache. "You're wrong."
His jaw tightens. He remains unfazed by my resistance. "I'm not. Your scent," he insists, his tone hardening with authority.
Without warning, his large hand shoots out and tightly grabs my fragile wrist. The sudden physical touch feels like a brand. A searing heat flares from his palm, burning hotly against my pale skin. An electric chill races straight down my spine, vibrating through my bones. My inner wolf, usually a dormant, cowering shadow, surges forward with a whimpering cry of recognition.
Panic fully setting in, I aggressively try to yank my arm away and pull free from his unyielding, iron grip. I twist my wrist, but his fingers are bands of solid steel. He doesn't budge.
"Please," I beg and plead with him, my chest heaving. "Let me go."
He just stares. Those dark, soulless eyes remain locked onto mine, seeming to suck the life and breath out of my lungs. He clearly knows that I feel the potent mate bond surging between us. He knows that my inner wolf feels it too. The mate bond sings in my blood, but it is a monumental truth that I simply cannot and will not accept given my cursed status in this world. I am a runt. This cannot happen to me.
Frustration mingling with my rising terror, I stammer out, "I have things to do. Let me go." I try to inject logic into the chaotic situation, pointing out his boundaries. "You're a complete stranger to me. You've inappropriately cornered me in a bathroom."
Torin's expression doesn't shift. "I will." His voice is smooth but firm, adding the impossible condition. "As soon as you admit that you are my mate."
"I can't be!" I stammer in response, my voice cracking as I desperately outline the biological impossibility of the situation. "Because you're an Alpha, and I'm a runt. It's not possible."
Torin opens his mouth, clearly preparing to fiercely argue against my self-deprecating logic and tear my defenses to shreds.
Before a single syllable leaves his throat, the bathroom door handle clicks.
Mabel suddenly pushes the heavy door open, freezing in her tracks. Her eyes widen, taking in the deeply inappropriate sight. A lowly, pathetic runt server standing intimately close to a powerful, foreign Alpha guest. Her face instantly twists into a mask of deep confusion and biting suspicion.
The tension in the room abruptly shifts. Before I can scramble for an explanation, Torin smoothly and effortlessly intervenes.
"We're just fine," Torin states to Mabel in a calm, collected tone. He drops my wrist. The sudden loss of his touch leaves my skin tingling and cold. "I was just leaving."
Without sparing me another glance, he casually steps back, releasing his hold on me, and exits the washroom without uttering another word. His shockingly quick and quiet departure sends a clear, heavy message to me: he wants to keep our interaction and the bond a secret from the public eye.
Far from bringing me comfort, this realization only hardens my resolve to keep denying the bond with everything I have.
The moment Torin is gone, Mabel rounds on me. Her eyes are narrowed with intense suspicion and judgment. She steps closer, demanding answers.
"What was he doing in here?" she demands, her voice low and sharp. "Why are you out of breath?"
"I just came to clean up," I stammer, rubbing my stinging wrist. "He followed me."
"Why?"
"I don't know!"
Mabel scoffs. Her gaze drags up and down my damp form with pure disdain. "I think you do know. I see the appeal, Lyra. The fantasy of luring in someone strong and powerful. But you are a nobody." She issues a harsh, degrading warning, stepping even closer. "You are a runt. Powerful, dangerous men like Torin will just rip your head off for amusement. You shouldn't harbor any delusional thoughts about luring or seducing someone so incredibly far out of your league."
A sickening wave of disgust washes over me as I realize she actually thinks I was intentionally trying to seduce the Alpha.
"It's not like that!" I say, frantically defending my innocence. Mortification burns my cheeks. "It was a misunderstanding. I swear. I did nothing wrong. I would never try to do something like that."
Mabel stares me down for a long, tense moment. Finally, she lets out an exhausted sigh. She reluctantly decides to take my word for it.
"Just go home," she orders, dismissing me from my shift. "The party is wrapping up. Go home early to avoid any further incidents."
"Thank you," I whisper.
Relieved to be let go, I quickly retreat to the back rooms. My hands tremble as I change out of my soiled serving uniform. I pull on my own worn clothes, push through the heavy doors, and practically sprint out of the packhouse.
The sprawling grounds of the estate are still well-lit by the warm glow of outdoor lights. A few lingering partygoers stand near the pristine lawns. As I walk quickly past them, heads turn. I can vividly feel the heavy, judgmental stares of the remaining guests following my every single move. The whispers hum in the air. I duck my head and hurry my pace, navigating the short, familiar distance to my home alone in the dark.
I walk in the shadows, my shoes crunching over the uneven dirt path. The cold night air hits my face, but it brings no comfort. The further I get from the packhouse, the heavier the reality settles in my chest.
No matter how fast my legs carry me through the night, I realize with a sinking, heavy heart that I cannot outrun the earth-shattering, terrifying reality of what just transpired in that washroom.
I have a mate.
I repeat the impossible fact in my mind. The thought echoes in the quiet night. I stumble over an exposed root, righting myself as tears of pure dread prick my eyes. I have a mate, and by some cruel twist of fate, he is Alpha Torin, the most dangerous wolf of the IronTalon Pack.
