The Disastrous Collision

Lyra

My mother's final, devastating "Please" echoed in my ears as she turned away, disappearing into the glittering crowd. I swallowed the thick, painful lump forming in my throat, forcing myself back into the shadows of the grand ballroom. For the rest of the evening, I treated the sprawling room like a dangerous battlefield. I deliberately hugged the far sidelines, gripping the edges of my silver tray until my fingers cramped. I executed a desperate, exhausting strategy to avoid crossing paths with my parents again. If they moved toward the towering ice sculptures, I retreated toward the heavy oak doors. If they lingered near the string musicians, I vanished into the dimly lit corners.

My presence did not go unnoticed. A few intoxicated guests caught sight of my small stature as I nervously passed out flutes of champagne. They shot me odd, judgmental looks, their faces contorting with the universal disgust reserved for runts. They sneered at my baggy, ill-fitting uniform, whispering to each other behind their fragile crystal glasses. Mercifully, they remained quiet, choosing to ignore me in favor of the flowing alcohol. The pack’s lavish celebration honoring Alpha Silas’s milestones proceeded smoothly without any major public incidents. Laughter and music filled the cavernous room, masking the quiet misery I felt with every step.

As the long hours ticked by, the physical toll of my grueling day caught up with me. My legs ached intensely from standing and walking continuously across the unforgiving marble floor. Blisters formed on the backs of my heels, sending sharp stings up my calves. An overwhelming desire to just drop the tray, flee the packhouse, and go home consumed my thoughts. I wanted my dark, quiet room where no one could stare at me.

But things suddenly took a drastic, terrifying turn.

While carefully scanning the moving crowd from the corner of my eye, I spotted my dad. He was moving through the sea of guests, his massive shoulders parting the crowd as he strode toward my section. A sudden, blinding wave of panic seized my chest, stealing my breath. Remembering my mother's hateful warning about his temper—how humiliated he would be to see me serving the visiting Alphas—I abandoned all caution.

I made a blind, frantic run toward the opposite side of the sprawling ballroom, desperate to escape his line of sight. In my panicked haste, my eyes darted backward to track his towering figure. I didn't watch where I was going.

I crashed directly into a solid, imposing figure.

The impact was sudden and harsh, knocking the breath from my lungs like I had sprinted into a brick wall. The silver tray tipped sideways. Cold champagne spilled all over the front of my white uniform, soaking through the fabric in seconds. Fragile crystal glasses slipped from my grasp, hitting the polished ballroom floor and shattering into dangerous, jagged pieces.

Mortified and trembling, I blurted out a breathless, "I'm sorry!"

I instantly dropped to my knees into the puddle of spilled alcohol. I frantically tried to gather the broken shards of glass with my bare hands. A sharp edge sliced into my finger, but I ignored the sting, desperate to erase the humiliating mistake before drawing the room's attention.

As I cautiously looked up from the wet mess to face the guest I collided with, my heart skipped a tragic, heavy beat.

I found myself paralyzed. I was kneeling on the floor, staring up into the darkest, emptiest eyes I had ever seen in my life. They were endless voids, stripped of warmth and mercy. The sheer weight of his gaze pinned me to the floor, making the surrounding party noise fade into a dull hum.

Intimidated beyond measure, I muttered another shaky, "I'm sorry," and scrambled backward, attempting to step away from him.

Instead of accepting the apology or stepping back to give me space, the mysterious male intentionally stepped closer, closing the distance between us. His massive boots stopped mere inches from my hands. His gaze was overwhelmingly intense, piercing through my weak defenses as if he was trying to look directly into my very soul. A sudden, terrifying chill washed over my skin, screaming at my primal instincts and urging me to get up and flee the scene immediately.

Yielding to the panic, I scrambled to my feet, turned around, and prepared to sprint toward the nearest exit.

But before I could take a single step, his incredibly deep, raspy, husky voice cleanly cut through the fading background music of the party.

"Stop."

The authoritative command caused my blood to run ice cold. I froze, physically incapable of defying him. I was trapped by his dark, looming, and suffocating presence. The air grew heavy, pressing down on my lungs until I was gasping for small, shallow breaths.

The man simply stood there, staring down at me. His lips parted slightly as if he wanted to speak, but he remained silent. His facial expression was unreadable, a blank mask of sheer dominance that made my knees want to buckle. Under the crushing weight of his stare, I found I could barely draw a breath into my lungs, let alone command my legs to move.

Just as the tension reached a breaking point, Mabel rushed over. She quickly stepped directly between me and the imposing man, breaking his line of sight.

"I am so sorry, Alpha," Mabel rambled, profusely apologizing to him on behalf of the packhouse staff. She bowed her head, her hands fluttering in nervous energy. "I will have this messy spill cleaned up immediately. Please, excuse the disruption."

Taking full advantage of the narrow window of distraction Mabel provided, I broke free from my paralysis. I dashed out of the crowded ballroom, my wet shoes squeaking slightly on the marble before finding their grip. My feet carried me as fast as I could down the long, opulent hallways. I barricaded myself inside the small back washroom.

I threw the deadbolt, pressing my back firmly against the cold tiled wall. I gasped desperately for air, my chest heaving. My heart hammered against my ribs so fiercely it threatened to explode.

In the safety of the isolation, the adrenaline began to fade, allowing my mind to finally connect the dots. I knew exactly who that terrifying wolf was. I had seen his face in warning files and grand portraits.

It was Alpha Torin, the notorious leader of the IronTalon Pack. A man globally feared, renowned as a ruthless, cruel leader who slaughters his enemies without hesitation.

But a secondary, far worse realization struck me. It was a terrifying truth that was currently ringing deep within my bones, chilling me far worse than the soaked uniform clinging to my skin.

I realized he couldn't be my mate.

I was merely a runt; the biological chances of me having any fated mate at all were incredibly low, bordering on impossible. Yet, the exact minute my body stumbled into his solid chest, an undeniable, electric jolt surged through my veins. It sparked along my nerve endings, a raw, primal connection I had never felt before.

Deep within my consciousness, my inner wolf cowered in submissive silence, just as terrified by the sudden revelation as my human side was.

I forcefully squeezed my eyes shut, desperately trying to calm my racing, panicked mind and deny the connection. But his dark, empty face was permanently burned into my vision.

Suddenly, the silence of the stark white bathroom was shattered.

The heavy wooden door behind me burst open, the metal deadbolt snapping like a twig.

I jumped in shock, instantly spinning around. I gripped the hard edge of the marble sink so tightly my knuckles turned white, struggling intensely to catch my breath as a massive shadow fell over me.

I didn't even need to fully turn around to confirm my worst fear; I just knew it was him.

His distinct scent—an overwhelmingly strong, intoxicating, deeply masculine, and pure Alpha aroma—instantly flooded and suffocated the small, confined space of the washroom. It wrapped around my throat, heavy like a physical chain, overpowering the sterile smell of bleach and soap.

He stepped fully inside the room, his towering frame blocking the exit, leaving no room for escape.

The heavy, final thud of the bathroom door firmly closing shut behind him told me everything I needed to know.

I was doomed.
