The White Wolves
Kaelie slowly blinked awake, her head pounding with a fuzzy, heavy, and relentless ache that instantly made her regret the previous night's excessive champagne intake. Every pulse in her temples felt like a hammer striking an anvil. The morning light filtering into her bedroom felt like a physical assault behind her eyes. Fortunately, the aggressive, rapid healing factor of her purebred werewolf blood was already doing its heavy lifting, quickly burning through the lingering toxins of the alcohol and clearing her foggy mind faster than any human remedy ever could. She dragged herself out from under the heavy comforter and stepped into a long, scalding shower, letting the blistering hot water wash away the sticky sweat and reckless decisions of her birthday party.
Dressed in her sleek, black athletic gear, she headed straight out the back doors of the pack house and down to the sprawling dirt training field. The morning air was crisp, stinging her lungs in a refreshing, waking way. She easily spotted her father, Alpha Vaughn, standing tall and immovable among the sparring warriors. His presence was impossible to miss. He constantly projected a heavy, suffocatingly commanding Alpha aura—an invisible, crushing force of sheer dominance that instinctively forced lesser wolves to keep their heads down, their eyes averted, and stay completely at bay. Most wolves would break out in a cold sweat just stepping within a ten-foot radius of him. Kaelie, however, approached him with zero hesitation, effortlessly walking right through that crushing wall of raw power as if it were nothing but a light, meaningless morning breeze.
She smiled warmly, greeting him with a simple, "Good morning, Dad."
Vaughn turned to her, his terrifying Alpha facade instantly softening. He chuckled deeply, a rumbling sound in his broad chest. "Well, good morning. I honestly didn't think I would see you until tomorrow, considering the mountain of empty champagne bottles the cleaning crew discovered discarded by the lake."
Kaelie laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck. "I was hoping to sweat the rest of it out with a light workout."
"Good," he said, turning his terrifying focus back to barking a harsh correction at two grappling warriors. He warmly encouraged her morning routine, calling out a gruff but loving "Love you," over his broad shoulder.
"Love you too," Kaelie replied, leaving the dusty field and heading for the dense, winding forest trails.
As she reached the tree line, she spotted her twin brother, Kieran, stretching his long legs against a massive oak. She casually walked up to him. "Going for a jog?"
Kieran groaned loudly, rolling his broad shoulders as a loud pop echoed from his joints. "My battered body is screaming no, but my logical mind dictates I need the exercise. So, yeah, I guess I will." He shrugged and fell into step beside her.
As the twins ran side by side, their boots hitting the packed dirt in perfect sync, Kaelie's internal thoughts drifted darkly to her frustratingly uncertain future. The fact that neither she nor Kieran had found their destined mates at the massive gathering last night filled her with a quiet, gnawing anxiety. It was a lingering fear, a constant question of where they truly belonged in the hierarchy of the packs. But buried far beneath their ordinary, everyday teenage worries laid a massive, incredibly dangerous secret.
Kaelie and Kieran were white wolves.
They were the absolute rarest, most lethal, and physically strongest mutation of their kind, directly descended from an ancient, legendary bloodline of elite warriors who had ruthlessly slaughtered their way through the vampire wars centuries ago, forcing peace onto the Sovereign Dominion. Their true, terrifying nature was kept strictly, violently hidden from the rest of the world by their father. If anyone outside their inner circle ever found out the truth about their blinding white fur and unmatched strength, the twins would instantly become high-value targets for ambitious enemies looking to harvest their immense power or breed them into mindless weapons of war. Kaelie knew that despite being physically petite, standing barely five-foot-two compared to her brother's massive, towering, broad-shouldered frame, her white wolf lineage made her every bit as fierce, fast, and deadly as him. She didn't need the immense bulk to snap a grown man's spine in half; her raw genetics did all the heavy lifting.
Her racing, anxious thoughts were abruptly and jarringly halted when Kieran's frantic voice suddenly blasted through their private mind-link. *Do you smell that?*
Kaelie flared her nostrils. A sickening, pungent scent of unwashed fur, stale sweat, and rotting decay hit her senses like a physical blow to the face. Her eyes widened instantly. Rogues.
Instantly shifting their postures into a lethal, completely silent stealth mode, the twins dropped flat to their bellies in the dirt. They meticulously crept over the crest of a nearby, heavily wooded hill, their movements completely devoid of sound. Peering through the dense, leafy foliage, they spotted a coordinated pack of twenty filthy rogues aggressively scouring their sovereign land. The intruders were fanned out, moving with a deliberate, organized purpose that rogues rarely possessed.
Kaelie held her breath, listening closely as one dirt-caked rogue stopped and muttered to another. "Find anything?"
The second rogue grunted back, kicking at the soil. "Not a single damn thing."
Kieran immediately pushed a mental alert straight to their father's mind.
Almost instantly, Vaughn's voice thundered through the mind-link, vibrating with pure, dominant authority. *Do not engage in combat. Under any circumstances. I am on my way.*
*But, Dad—* Kieran attempted to argue, his alpha blood boiling hot at the blatant intrusion on their territory.
*No buts,* the Alpha snarled ruthlessly through the link, shutting his son down completely. *I absolutely do not want your true power discovered by anyone. Not yet. Hold your position.*
Forced to lay completely still in the damp, rough dirt, Kaelie and Kieran could only watch in silent awe as their father abruptly burst from the dense tree line like a dark, vengeful god of war. Vaughn didn't even bother shifting into his massive wolf form. He ruthlessly and methodically tore through the twenty heavily armed intruders with his bare, blood-stained hands. He slaughtered nineteen of them in a horrifying, blood-soaked blur of flying limbs, crushed windpipes, and violently snapping bone. The sickening sounds of tearing flesh and dying gasps filled the clearing. Blood sprayed in thick, crimson arcs across the green grass as Vaughn ripped throats completely out and caved in skulls with devastating punches, deliberately leaving only a single, terrified, trembling rogue alive to be violently dragged back to the compound for questioning.
Hours later, the atmosphere shifted completely to the grim, freezing dampness of the pack's underground dungeon. The air smelled of rusted iron, old blood, and pure terror. Kaelie and Kieran leaned casually against the weeping stone wall in silent, desensitized boredom. They had seen this a hundred times before.
In the center of the room, their father interrogated the filthy, dirt-caked captive, who was securely strapped to a heavy wooden chair with thick leather belts.
Vaughn stood directly before the bleeding rogue, his imposing figure casting a long, dark shadow. "Who are you? What was your pack doing on Argent land?"
When met with a stubborn, defiant silence, Vaughn slowly began to circle the captive. He casually twirled a wicked, serrated hunting knife in his right hand, the heavy metal glinting under the dim, flickering bulbs. He spoke in a low, terrifyingly calm voice. "My patience is rapidly disappearing. And I promise you, when it is completely gone, this experience will become agonizingly painful."
The rogue spat a wad of bloody saliva onto the stone floor and screamed out, "I will never tell you anything!"
Without blinking, Vaughn casually motioned to a heavily armed warrior standing by the iron door. The warrior immediately wheeled in a stainless steel metal tray covered in shining, barbaric tools. The Alpha calmly set his hunting knife down on the tray, his eyes dead and unfeeling. He selected a pair of heavy, rusted metal pliers and stepped forward.
Grabbing the rogue's trembling hand and pinning it flat against the armrest, Vaughn methodically and brutally began tearing out the man's dirty, cracked fingernails, one by agonizingly slow one. The heavy metal pliers gripped the thick keratin, pulling back harshly against the raw flesh until it gave way with a wet, sickening tear.
Horrific, blood-curdling screams echoed endlessly through the small, enclosed stone room, the sheer volume of the absolute agony vibrating deep in Kaelie's chest. Blood poured from the raw, exposed nail beds, dripping steadily and thickly onto the cold floor. But the brutal, bloody interrogation yielded absolutely no actionable answers. The rogue just kept screaming, thrashing against his heavy leather restraints, and sobbing uncontrollably, resulting in nothing but a sickening pile of violently extracted, bloody nails discarded carelessly onto the metal tray.
Finally, bloody, hyperventilating, and utterly desperate, the mangled rogue looked up. His eyes were wild, dilated with pure, unadulterated insanity. He shouted at the absolute top of his lungs, his vocal cords tearing with the force of his words. "You all will be destroyed! Every last one of you will be slaughtered like the pigs you are!"
Before Vaughn or the guards could even flinch to stop him, the rogue violently and forcefully thrust his heavy wooden chair backward. He smashed the back of his head directly toward the unforgiving stone floor, snapping his own neck with a sickening, deafening crack that echoed sharply off the damp walls.
His lifeless, broken body slumped forward heavily against the thick leather restraints, blood dripping rapidly from his chin.
In the heavy, suffocating silence that immediately followed the brutal suicide, the twins slowly looked up from the corpse to their father. Vaughn's face was a twisted mask of pure, grim fury. His broad chest heaved as he stared at the dead intruder.
He turned his blazing eyes to Kaelie and Kieran. "Put all border patrols on maximum alert. Everyone is to be armed and ready for war," Vaughn ordered, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "That dead rogue may have been completely insane, but I want this pack fully prepared for whatever massive threat is coming for us."
Nodding in unison, Kaelie and Kieran immediately pushed off the weeping stone wall and sprinted out of the dungeon, rushing up the stairs to carry out their father's grim command.
