The Apex Circle Reunion

Kaelie stood motionless in the center of her bedroom, her fingers carefully adjusting the delicate spaghetti straps of her stunning green slip dress. The smooth, expensive silk fabric clung perfectly to her frame, stopping elegantly right at her knees, paired with simple but striking black open-toed heels. She stared intensely at her own reflection in the full-length mirror, fighting to keep her erratic heart rate steady after Macy’s terrifying prediction. Below her feet, the solid floorboards of the packhouse literally vibrated. The entire fold practically hummed with the chaotic, overlapping excitement of the arriving guests. The heavy bass of the party music thumped relentlessly through the thick walls, sounding exactly like the rapid heartbeat she was desperately trying to calm down.

The bedroom door swung wide open, and her twin brother, Kieran, strolled casually into the room. He looked completely at ease, perfectly styled and devastatingly handsome in a sharp, tailored navy blue suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. His blonde hair was slicked back just enough to look polished but effortless.

"Hey, sis," Kieran greeted, leaning comfortably against the wooden doorframe. He took his time looking her up and down, a cocky, familiar smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "I'll be totally honest with you. My knuckles are inevitably going to get real bloody tonight."

Kaelie raised a perfectly arched eyebrow, turning away from the mirror to face him fully. "Oh?"

"Yeah," Kieran chuckled, stepping further into the spacious room. "I'm going to have to work serious overtime keeping all the drooling, desperate male wolves away from you tonight. But I have to concede, you look undeniably good."

"Thanks, Kieran. You don't look too bad yourself," Kaelie shot back, giving him an appreciative, validating nod. They shared the exact same striking, crystal blue eyes, a dead giveaway of their powerful twin bond. "Have you snuck a peek downstairs yet?"

Kieran scoffed loudly, moving over to her vanity mirror to meticulously adjust the silver cufflinks on his dress shirt sleeves. "And risk Mom's legendary, terrifying wrath? Not a chance in hell. I actually want to survive to see my eighteenth birthday. I have, however, been relentlessly checking the Apex Circle group chat. According to our flawless friends, this is already the party of the entire year."

"Mom will be so incredibly pleased," Kaelie laughed, easily picturing Luna Seline standing proudly over her meticulously planned, glamorous event. "Tell me exactly what's going on down there."

"Okay, okay, hang on," Kieran grinned, pulling his illuminated phone from his suit pocket and scrolling through the endless messages. "Well, Alpha Ewan's Beta is already drunk. Great start for him. Thatcher and Cal are currently placing incredibly stupid, high-stakes bets on the structural integrity of the massive ice sculpture Mom ordered. They want to see which idiot warrior will try to stick their tongue to it first."

Kaelie groaned, rolling her eyes dramatically toward the ceiling. "Tell them to put me down for fifty bucks on Dad's warrior, Tate. The man has absolutely zero shame."

"Done," Kieran laughed, tapping away rapidly on his glowing screen. "Oh, and Evander just walked in. He is currently trapped by the front doors, doing his absolute best to politely dodge his usual, suffocating swarm of fawning, desperate she-wolves."

Their easy, lighthearted banter abruptly halted when Alpha Vaughn and Luna Seline suddenly appeared at the open bedroom door. Kaelie straightened her posture instantly, brushing invisible lint from her silk dress.

"Okay, my babies, it's about time!" Seline beamed, practically vibrating with overwhelming joy. "I cannot believe this day is finally here. Happy Birthday, my beautiful angels!" She rushed forward, pulling them both into a tight, perfume-scented hug that briefly knocked the breath out of them. Pulling back, she meticulously fixed Kieran's tie and smoothed down a stray blonde hair on Kaelie's bare shoulder before stepping back to stand proudly beside her husband.

Alpha Vaughn wasn't usually a man of many words. He was an imposing, heavily muscled, stoic leader who commanded absolute respect with a single, sharp glance. But tonight, he was brimming with an overwhelming, incredibly rare display of open affection. He looked deeply at his eldest children, his broad chest rising with a heavy, emotional breath.

"No father could ask for better children," Vaughn declared, his deep voice remarkably thick with raw, unfiltered emotion. He stepped forward, grasping Kieran's hand firmly before leaning in to press a tender, loving kiss to Kaelie's cheek. "I am profoundly proud of the people you have both become."

The sheer sincerity and heavy weight of his powerful words hit hard. Kaelie glanced sideways and saw a sudden, undeniable sheen of unshed tears violently welling in Kieran's eyes. She knew exactly what this meant to her brother. It was a powerful physical reaction born from his deep, eager desire to one day prove himself fully worthy of inheriting the prestigious, demanding Alpha title. To hear his father fiercely validate him like this was absolutely everything.

Taking a deep, steadying breath to compose themselves, the twins linked arms. They moved to the hallway, waiting for their precise cue, and began their grand, highly anticipated descent down the sweeping main staircase.

The packed, glamorous ballroom erupted into a deafening chorus of cheers and applause the very moment they were spotted. Hundreds of faces turned toward them. Navigating through the dense, overly perfumed crowd of pack members and wealthy visiting dignitaries was a physical chore. They nodded and smiled, pushing their way through the suffocating heat of the room, dodging outstretched hands until they finally reached their designated sanctuary: the tight, protective circle formed entirely by the Apex Circle.

Amidst the loud, overlapping voices of their friends loudly singing happy birthday, Kaelie immediately scanned the group. Her heart hammered relentlessly against her ribs, Macy's haunting words echoing in her skull. She desperately searched the circle and instantly locked eyes with Evander.

She stood frozen. She waited, holding her breath for the mythical, undeniable pull of the mate bond to hit her chest like a speeding freight train. She braced herself for the scent of him to overwhelm her senses, for the electric, destined jolt to force them together.

Nothing happened.

There was absolutely no spark. No electrical current humming fiercely beneath her skin. No overwhelming scent invading her lungs. They were undeniably not mates.

A massive wave of pure, unadulterated relief aggressively washed over her, instantly untying the agonizing knot of dread in her stomach. But as she kept her gaze fixed on Evander, for a fraction of a second, Kaelie could have sworn she saw a fleeting, distinct hint of deep sadness flash violently across his dark eyes. It was a raw, crushing look of profound disappointment.

Before she could even begin to mentally dissect the heavy emotion, Evander rapidly masked it. He smoothly hid the pain behind his flawless, charming royal persona. Stepping forward into the center of the group, he raised a crisp, chilled bottle of expensive champagne high into the air.

"A toast to the birthday boy and girl!" Evander called out, his booming, joyful voice easily cutting through the chaotic noise of the party. "Finally, the youngest of our elite group is absolutely, officially legal!"

The rowdy celebration of the Apex Circle cheered loudly, raising their glasses high. But the chaotic noise was briefly paused when Alpha Vaughn stepped decisively into the tight circle. He extended a firm hand, respectfully shaking the young prince's hand.

"It is good to see you, Evander," Vaughn stated, taking a brief moment to formally ask after the royal family. "How is your older brother, King Cyrus, managing things? I know he is currently ruling in the Sovereign Dominion."

Evander smiled effortlessly, his posture perfectly straight. "They are doing great, Alpha Vaughn. My mother and Cyrus send their absolute warmest regards, but they are deeply sorry they could not make the long journey."

"Oh, I am sure Cyrus is completely surrounded by endless work in the Sovereign Dominion," Vaughn replied, not bothered in the slightest by the King's absence. After exchanging a few more polite, diplomatic pleasantries, Vaughn respectfully retreated back into the dense crowd, leaving the young wolves entirely to their wild, unrestrained celebration.

Evander immediately stepped forward, holding his hand out to Kaelie. "I officially claim the first dance with the birthday girl."

They spent the entire night laughing wildly and spinning effortlessly on the crowded dance floor. It was entirely free of any suffocating romantic tension. They were just two best friends celebrating a major milestone. At one point during the cake cutting, the two of them held massive slices of frosting-covered cake, eyes locked in a silent, daring challenge. They were only stopped from childishly smashing the massive birthday cake into each other's faces by the fiercely stern, sharp warning glare violently shot at them by Kaelie's mother from across the ballroom.

By the time the cool, grey dawn began to break over the horizon, the deafening music inside the fold house had finally died down. The Apex Circle had retreated completely from the stifling, sweaty ballroom, seeking much-needed refuge on the cool, quiet grass beside a nearby glassy lake.

Their formal ties were completely undone, collars loosened. Expensive designer shoes and strappy heels lay long abandoned in the damp, morning grass. The exhausted group sat in a comfortable, drowsy silence, passing around stolen bottles of leftover champagne.

The quiet peace was abruptly shattered when an exhausted Cal bluntly blurts out, "So, neither of you found your mates?"

For his utter lack of tact and incredibly blunt delivery, Cal immediately earned a swift, deeply irritated elbow violently jammed into his ribs by his own mate, Hadley. Cal winced, rubbing his side, but kept his expectant, wide-eyed gaze entirely on the twins.

Kieran simply shook his head no. However, Kaelie watched her brother closely and noticed a distinct look of lingering wonder shining brightly in his tired blue eyes. He was clearly already thinking about what the future held for his bloodline.

"Well, that confirmation means our highly anticipated annual weekend trip to the royal palace next week is still officially on," Cal stated confidently, recovering from the sharp elbow.

The group murmured in agreement, but the harsh realization brought a heavy, sobering shift to the atmosphere. That specific trip would officially pave the way for the grueling, terrifying three-month Leadership training program that was scheduled to begin precisely on August 1st.

Tamsin leaned forward, burying her face in her hands. She let out a loud, dramatic groan, reminding the group of the harsh reality waiting for them. "You do realize that the other attending young Alphas and Lunas from across the territories are going to absolutely despise us, right? They will inevitably hate our elite, pre-formed circle."

Hadley threw her head back, staring up at the lightening sky as she dramatically complained, "Ugh, don't even get me started. I am going to have to physically deal with the insufferable, overflowing arrogance of my cousin, Garrett. He makes it his personal life mission to get under my skin."

Trying to aggressively lighten the heavy, sinking mood, Thatcher arrogantly chimes in. He puffed out his chest, completely unbothered by the looming threat. "Let them be mad. Everyone hates us simply because they ain't us. It is basic jealousy."

Kieran immediately shut down the spiraling anxiety. He sat up straight, his voice suddenly ringing with absolute, commanding authority. It was a stark preview of the dominant Alpha he was born to be. "Listen to me. We must simply forget the outsiders. When we get to training, we stay together, and we always have each other's backs. Understood?"

His powerful, unyielding statement earned firm, utterly loyal nods from every single member of the group.

Sitting silently in the wet morning grass, Kaelie hugged her bare knees tightly to her chest. She stared out at the dark, rippling water of the lake, deeply contemplating the chaotic, blood-filled months ahead. The sheer thought of the training grounds made her stomach twist into painful, nervous knots.

She nervously looked around the tight circle and asked the group, "Just how many other wolves will actually be attending the training?"

Evander shifted his weight, his playful, charming demeanor completely vanishing. He replied in a calm, dead-serious tone. "There will be at least one hundred."

Kaelie's mind violently reeled. One hundred. That is an explosive, incredibly dangerous amount of dominant, volatile alpha blood forced tightly into one confined, inescapable space. Egos would viciously clash. Dominance would be challenged at every single turn.

She swallowed hard, her voice incredibly quiet in the chilly morning air. "Someone is definitely going to get into a brutal fight."

Evander didn't look at her. He simply looked out over the still, dark water of the lake, his sharp profile silhouetted against the breaking dawn. He replied in a chillingly calm, absolute voice.

"It is not a question of if, Kaelie. It is simply a matter of when."
