The Price of Arrogance
Natalia’s perfectly contoured face twisted into an ugly mask of indignation as she aggressively pushed forward, loudly insisting on performing standard CPR on the frail, unconscious child. "You're the one wasting time with your fake medicine! Move out of the way. I'm doing CPR right now."
Still kneeling beside the frail girl on the blistering concrete, Kaelie didn't even break her rhythm. She simply tilted her head, her dark hair shifting slightly over her shoulder as she shot Natalia a razor-sharp, withering glare that could freeze boiling water.
"She passed out from low blood pressure, and CPR's your only move? Quack," Kaelie stated, her voice slicing through the tense morning air with absolute, unshakeable authority.
The blunt, public humiliation sent a violent flush of red creeping rapidly up Natalia’s neck, mottling her pristine appearance. Furious and desperate to maintain her superiority in front of the elite gathering, Natalia haughtily touted her recent attendance at a highly exclusive international medical conference, loudly reminding the crowd of her powerful uncle, Harrison Everett. "Who the hell do you think you are? Do you even know who my uncle is?"
But Kaelie ignored the pathetic display of nepotism entirely. Instead, her fingers moved like lightning, pressing firmly into a critical, hidden pressure point on the child's neck while she coolly ordered the 'hack' to get out of her vital workspace. "Get out of my way."
Driven mad by the blatant disrespect, Natalia crossed her arms, her voice dripping with venom. "If traditional medicine actually worked, why would we even need real doctors in the modern world?" she sneered, aggressively demanding that Kaelie prove her so-called magic tricks and actually save the girl right then and there. If the child died, Natalia warned loudly, Kaelie would take the full, devastating legal blame for her death.
"Better start rehearsing," Kaelie replied coolly, a faint, dangerous smirk playing on her lips.
With breathtaking, swift precision that left the onlookers dizzy, she deployed five silver acupuncture needles, sinking them flawlessly into the fainted girl's meridian points. Almost instantly, color rushed back into the child's pale cheeks. With a sharp gasp, the little girl’s eyes flew wide open, remarkably alert and looking entirely angelic despite her near-death experience seconds prior.
As the tense crowd suddenly erupted into massive shock and thunderous cheers, Natalia stood frozen in complete disbelief.
"Holy shit, she actually did it! Five little needles and she's back!" a joyful bystander shouted over the rising applause.
Refusing to accept defeat in front of so many witnesses, Natalia forcefully scoffed, stomping her designer heel against the pavement. "Typical traditional medicine scam. This has to be staged," she spat, desperately trying to manipulate the narrative. "Since when does jabbing someone with unsterilized pins fix anything?"
Before Kaelie even had to waste her breath freezing the woman with another glare, the heavy atmosphere finally broke as the little girl proved her wrong. The child piped up from the pavement, her voice incredibly sweet, yet laced with a remarkably sharp edge that sliced through the tension: "Traditional medicine's been around for thousands of years. And you? You could do absolutely nothing. Maybe you should go back to school."
The crowd exploded into uproarious, uncontrollable laughter. The sheer absurdity of the prestigious Kingsport medical student being ruthlessly roasted by a five-year-old child was too much for the bystanders to contain.
Utterly humiliated by the biting words of a child and the mocking, laughing faces surrounding her on all sides, Natalia lost all composure. "Pathetic peasants!" she spat violently, turning on her heel to flee the disastrous scene, desperate to escape the relentless, pointing fingers.
But Kaelie wasn't about to let her walk away so easily. The disrespect shown to her ancient craft demanded an immediate toll.
Instantly, Kaelie’s hand blurred into motion. A silver acupuncture needle whistled sharply through the morning air, flying straight past Natalia’s ear with a deadly hiss and burying itself deep into the thick trunk of a nearby pine tree—stopping a mere inch from the back of Natalia's skull.
The terrifying thwack paralyzed Natalia in her tracks. All the color rapidly drained from her face.
"Forgetting something, hotshot?" Kaelie asked, stepping forward. Her lips were curving into a smile that suddenly radiated a dark, icy, and suffocating danger. She tapped her temple slowly, deliberately, locking eyes with the terrified doctor. "An apology."
Trembling violently but fiercely refusing to permanently damage her elite reputation in front of the masses, Natalia foolishly decided to play dumb. "I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered defensively, stubbornly crossing her arms in denial. "I don't respond to frauds."
When a brave bystander from the crowd openly mocked her supposed connection to the esteemed Harrison Everett, remarking that he would be utterly ashamed to claim her, Natalia whirled around like a cornered viper. She lashed out and slapped the man violently across the face, the sharp, explosive crack silencing the cheers instantly.
"Shut your mouth, trash! The Everett family owns every single hospital in Halston," she shrieked, her eyes bulging with absolute madness. "We control everything! Piss me off, and none of you pathetic losers will ever get treated again in this city. You'll rot in the streets!"
Blinded by her screaming, irrational rage, Natalia entirely missed the terrifying, sub-zero danger now flickering wildly in Kaelie's steady, unblinking gaze. She also missed the careless, almost imperceptible flick of Kaelie's wrist.
A tiny, smooth flying stone shot forward like a bullet, striking Natalia with pinpoint, devastating accuracy. Her knees instantly gave out from beneath her, a sharp, ragged cry tearing forcefully from her throat as she hit the blistering pavement. White-hot, blinding pain lanced rapidly through her leg, and a sickening, perfectly audible crack confirmed the total shattering of her kneecap. The brutal sound echoed through the hushed street like a gunshot.
An invisible, agonizing force seemed to lock her completely in place, leaving her entirely paralyzed and groveling in the dirt.
Kaelie walked over slowly, the soft padding of her steps contrasting wildly with the violence she had just unleashed. She bent down gracefully until her cold, bottomless eyes directly met Natalia's panicked, tear-filled ones. Her voice was soft, yet it cut like a surgical blade. "This isn't about your fragile ego. It's about people's actual lives. You're a profound disgrace to the profession."
Watching Natalia hyperventilate with a slow, merciless smile, Kaelie leaned in closer, whispering, "Since you're related to the esteemed Mr. Everett, I'll go easy on you today. Spending the rest of the day exactly like this won't kill you. After all... absolutely no one pushed you. You simply chose to collapse."
Unable to force a single word past her paralyzed vocal cords, Natalia lay pinned against the cold, unforgiving pavement. She was burning with absolute, suffocating humiliation and seething with a dark, venomous hatred as the crowd jeered and pointed at the mighty Kingsport medical student groveling pathetically in the dirt. Deep in her fractured mind, she vowed silently that the next time they met, she would make this bitch regret ever being born.
Having delivered her brutal, calculated justice, Kaelie stood up and calmly brushed off her hands, not sparing the broken woman a single backward glance. To her, Natalia Everett was nothing more than an unpleasant obstacle that had been efficiently cleared from her path.
Her terrifying, oppressive aura instantly evaporated as the surrounding crowd parted nervously. An eager, trembling elderly man bravely stepped forward from the mass of bystanders, clutching his worn hat. He asked hesitantly if her family actually practiced traditional healing, and if someone with her incredible skills would ever deign to treat ordinary folks like them who couldn't afford VIP care at the Everett hospitals.
Kaelie's aloof, deadly demeanor melted away entirely, replaced by a remarkably warm, genuine smile that lit up her dark eyes. "Of course," she said gently, her voice ringing with a sincere promise that instantly put the nervous man at ease. "Come to 22 Salix Row. My clinic's always open."
