A Little Matchmaker

As the gawking, whispering crowd finally began to disperse from the sun-baked courtyard, their gossiping murmurs fading into the crisp morning air, Kaelie turned her attention away from the departing onlookers. She smoothly crouched back down onto the warm pavement, leveling her gaze with the quiet, wide-eyed little girl she had just miraculously pulled back from the absolute brink of death.

"Where are your parents, sweetheart?" Kaelie asked softly, her tone remarkably gentle, carrying none of the terrifying, sub-zero danger she had just unleashed on Natalia minutes prior.

The child didn't flinch or hesitate. Introducing herself as Jemma Vaughan with a surprisingly regal posture for a toddler, she lifted a tiny, trembling finger and pointed directly across the vast plaza. Her target was the towering, elite structure of the Astrea Spire. That massive, monolithic building dominated the city skyline, known by everyone as the exclusive fortress that housed Kingsport's most terrifyingly powerful and untouchable figures.

Rather than running off to find her wealthy family in the aftermath of the chaos, Jemma clung to Kaelie’s pant leg like a determined, unshakeable shadow. Her big, dark eyes studied her savior with an intense, unblinking curiosity, taking in every single detail of Kaelie's striking face.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" Jemma asked suddenly, her high-pitched voice cutting through the lingering silence of the courtyard.

Kaelie blinked, slightly taken aback by the blunt, completely unexpected question. "No, I'm completely single," she answered honestly, a faint smile playing on her pale lips.

Upon casually discovering that Kaelie was unattached, Jemma’s pale, recovering face suddenly lit up like a beacon. A massive, triumphant burst of confidence washed over her tiny features, entirely replacing her previous shock from the medical emergency.

"Then you should absolutely marry my brother Asher!" the five-year-old declared boldly, planting her little hands firmly on her hips. Her childish voice rang out with utter seriousness, echoing slightly across the emptying pavement. "He's kinda strict and serious all the time, but he's super handsome and really, really rich. You'd be perfect for him!"

Deeply amused by the tiny, precocious girl's earnest and highly aggressive matchmaking attempts for her older brother, Kaelie let out a warm, musical laugh. The bright, genuine sound stood in stark contrast to the oppressive aura she usually carried. Reaching into the deep pocket of her jacket, she pulled out a piece of carefully wrapped, homemade herbal candy. She unwrapped the sweet treat and gently hand-fed it to the child, her slender fingers softly brushing a stray, sweat-dampened lock of hair from Jemma's forehead. The little girl chewed happily, leaning into the comforting touch with absolute trust.

A sharp gasp from a few feet away completely shattered the tender, quiet moment.

Evander, the high-ranking, always-composed assistant to the notoriously powerful Vaughan family, had just sprinted onto the scene. He stopped dead in his tracks, his expensive leather shoes skidding slightly on the pavement, freezing in absolute shock at the impossible sight unfolding right before his eyes.

Everyone within their exclusive, terrifyingly powerful social circle knew exactly who Jemma Vaughan was. She was a ruthless, unpredictable little firecracker. Usually, she bit, kicked, or screamed her lungs out at anyone who even dared to breathe near her personal space without explicit permission. She was an absolute terror to the elite nannies and highly trained bodyguards alike.

Yet here she was, acting as docile and sweet as a tamed kitten with Kaelie. Evander's sharp, calculating eyes instantly zeroed in on the woman's face, and his blood ran cold. He immediately recognized her striking features. This was the disgraced daughter who had recently, and very publicly, been disowned by the Hardwick family. She was currently the biggest, most scandalous laughingstock in the city's high society, and here she was, physically touching the Vaughan family's most precious gem.

Desperate to regain control of the highly volatile situation and separate the young Vaughan heir from this walking public relations disaster, Evander stepped forward. He carefully tried to coax Jemma away with soft, pleading words, treating her exactly like a ticking time bomb.

"Miss Jemma, it's time to head inside now. We've been terribly worried about you," he urged, keeping his hands visible and his voice painfully steady.

But Jemma fiercely rebelled. She stubbornly wrapped both of her little arms tightly around Kaelie’s leg, anchoring herself to the doctor and refusing to budge a single inch. She shot Evander a deadly, venomous glare that was far too intimidating for a five-year-old child.

It wasn't until Evander practically dropped to his knees and begged, frantically explaining the dire situation back at the Spire, that her iron grip faltered. "Please, Jemma," Evander pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine panic. "Your older brother completely skipped taking his crucial, life-saving medication. He refused to take it just so he could frantically search the massive grounds for you."

At the mention of her brother's severely compromised health, Jemma finally hesitated. Her stubborn grip loosened just a fraction as a heavy wave of guilt washed over her tiny face.

Following the direction of Jemma’s guilty, worried gaze, Kaelie slowly looked up. Her sharp, observant eyes scanned the vast plaza, eventually locking onto the distant figure of a man lingering heavily in the dark, recessed shadows of the Spire’s grand entrance.

Even from hundreds of feet away, the man commanded an undeniable, oppressive presence that seemed to warp the very air around him. But Kaelie wasn't looking at the immaculate cut of his expensive suit or the terrifying aura he projected. Her highly trained, expert medical eye immediately dissected his physical state. She noticed his painfully stiff posture, the rigid, unnatural way he held his broad shoulders to mask deep-seated agony. She observed his shallow, tightly controlled breathing, and the deliberate, almost instinctual way his body actively avoided the harsh, revealing glare of the morning sunlight.

It told her everything she needed to know. This was a man battling a severe, deeply ingrained chronic illness. Whatever toxic, relentless condition was coursing through his veins, it was actively eating away at his life force, slowly and painfully shutting his entire system down from the inside out.

Sensing the heavy gravity of the situation and her brother's impending collapse, Jemma squeezed Kaelie's fingers tightly. "I'll be extremely quick, I promise! Wait right here for me!" she vowed fiercely. Finally letting go of her savior's leg, the little girl turned and ran as fast as her little legs could carry her toward the shadowy figure in the distance.

Left standing entirely alone on the sun-baked pavement with the assistant, Kaelie watched Evander immediately shift his posture. The frantic, pleading caretaker vanished in the blink of an eye. In his place stood a guarded, calculating corporate professional.

He stepped forward and smoothly offered Kaelie a premium, gold-embossed business card. His tone was technically polite, hitting all the right professional notes, but it was laced with a heavy, unmistakable layer of guarded caution. He was clearly trying to manage a potential threat, attempting to politely dismiss her before she could sink her claws into the Vaughan family's pristine reputation.

"Thank you for your assistance today. The Vaughan family is grateful," Evander said smoothly, pushing the card toward her.

Kaelie didn't even raise her hand to take the card. She let it hang awkwardly in the air between them. Instead, she let her cold, bottomless eyes drag over him slowly, thoroughly dissecting his fake politeness. She arched a single, perfect brow as a faint, knowing smirk touched her pale lips.

"You seem to know exactly who I am," she observed, her voice cool, piercing, and utterly devoid of the gentle warmth she had just shown the child. "Can't wait to shake me off?"

A sudden, involuntary chill ran straight down Evander's spine as he buckled under her intense, crushing psychological pressure. It felt exactly like standing before Asher Vaughan himself—a terrifying, suffocating weight that demanded total submission.

"I'm... I'm just an assistant. Why would I possibly know who you are, Ms. Hardwick?" he stammered nervously, the color completely draining from his face as he instantly realized his fatal mistake. He had just used her former surname, giving himself away entirely and confirming he knew exactly who she was.

"Relax, I get the message loud and clear," Kaelie replied smoothly, her smirk morphing into a smile of entire, chilling indifference.

Not wanting to waste another second playing exhausting, hypocritical high-society games with these people, she coolly gave him a final instruction. "Do me a favor. Give me a full five-minute head start before you dare tell Jemma that I left."

Without waiting for his stuttered response or giving him a chance to argue, she effortlessly swung her long leg over her parked scooter. She kicked up the metal stand in one fluid motion, twisted the throttle, and sped off down the busy avenue. She left absolutely nothing behind but the fading, faint hum of her engine in her wake.

From his distant vantage point in the shadowy, recessed doorway of the Spire, Asher Vaughan watched the scene unfold. Through the heavy gloom, he caught a fleeting, silent glimpse of Kaelie's perfectly straight, fiercely confident posture cutting through the sunlight, just before she vanished around the corner. She didn't look back once.

By the time Jemma rushed back to the spot on the pavement and realized her beloved Kaelie was entirely gone, the child's sweet, angelic demeanor evaporated into thin air.

She whirled on Evander like a tiny, wrathful demon. Her little face flushed bright red as she pointed an accusing finger at the terrified assistant, furiously accusing him of purposefully scaring off the beautiful woman who was obviously destined to be with Asher.

Trembling before the cunning, terrifying wrath of the five-year-old girl, Evander frantically threw his hands up in a desperate attempt to defend himself. He knew better than anyone that crossing Jemma Vaughan was a guaranteed death sentence in their world.

"She was just disowned by the Hardwick family!" he admitted carefully, his voice shaking as he tried desperately to appease the screaming little girl without angering her further. "I was only being cautious for the family's sake. We can't be involved in that kind of scandal! But honestly, Jemma, she left on her own! I swear I didn't chase her away!"
