The Training Ring
Elara POV
I woke up the next morning feeling a deep, suffocating sense of betrayal anchoring me to the mattress. The cruel revelations from the previous night played on a relentless, tormenting loop in my exhausted mind. My father's booming voice, the sadistic pleasure on his scarred face as he reminded me of the ancient pack laws—it all felt like a heavy, physical weight pressing down on my chest. I was legally cornered. Because of my supposed Beta bloodline, I could never leave this abusive nightmare without the Alpha's explicit, written permission. A permission I knew with absolute certainty I would never receive. Alpha Kaelen would never side with me over his own Beta, and the powerful twins would simply maintain the status quo when they took over. I was trapped.
I pushed the heavy, tangled blankets off my trembling legs and forced myself out of bed. Every single muscle ached with tension. I made my wooden, exhausted way down the hallway and slowly descended the stairs. I desperately needed a glass of water, a quiet moment to process my grim reality before the rest of the house woke up.
But there was no peace to be found. The moment my bare feet crossed the threshold into the kitchen, I was immediately greeted by my father’s menacing scowl. He stood near the wooden island, arms crossed over his massive chest, a dark, looming figure radiating pure hostility.
"You’re coming with me to the training grounds today," he snarled, the command leaving his lips without a single ounce of hesitation or parental warmth. He looked at me not as a daughter, but as a disgusting pest infesting his home.
My tired mind flared with defensive defiance. The hell I was. I had never been allowed to train properly before. "I can’t fight, remember?" I shot back sarcastically, relying on my usual, bitter defense mechanism. "I’m supposedly puny and weak."
He reacted with lethal, terrifying speed. There was absolutely no warning, no shift in his wide stance, no telegraphing of his movement. One second he was glaring at me, and the next, a sudden, vicious fist was flying directly toward the side of my head, aimed right for my temple.
My breath caught sharply in my throat. Acting entirely on raw preservation, I ducked hard to the right, barely managing to evade the incoming blow. The displaced air rushed aggressively past my ear as his heavy, calloused knuckles grazed the ends of my hair. I stumbled back against the cold stainless steel of the refrigerator, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I was deeply surprised that I had managed to dodge it at all. It was pure, unadulterated instinct. And looking at my father’s face, so was he. His dark eyes widened slightly in genuine shock before narrowing into slits of intense, unbridled fury. He hated that I had slipped away from his punishment.
"You’re almost eighteen," he snapped, taking a heavy, threatening step forward and invading my personal space. "I want to see if you have any actual Beta blood flowing through your veins. You will train with everyone else today." He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly register that vibrated with suppressed violence. "Do not test my patience again. Next time, you won’t dodge so easily."
I swallowed the thick lump of fear in my throat, knowing better than to push him any further. Reluctantly, I trailed behind him, following his broad, tense back out the front door and toward the outdoor training ring.
The crisp morning air bit at my skin as we approached the dirt clearing, the scent of pine and damp earth filling my lungs. I wondered idly where Vespera was, feeling a bitter sting of injustice that my golden-child sister didn’t have to subject herself to this morning misery. The training area was already bustling with pack members gathering for the morning drills. I wrapped my arms tightly around my waist, feeling entirely out of place among the hardened fighters. My eyes swept across the crowd and immediately landed on the towering future Alpha twins, Varek and Zaric. They were cloistered with a small group of elite warriors, stretching and preparing to hone their lethal skills. As future leaders, their bodies were heavily muscled and built for war.
My father didn't give me time to hide in the background. He strode dominantly right into the center of the dusty training ring, demanding attention.
"Listen up!" his booming voice echoed across the grounds, cutting through the chatter and demanding absolute silence. "Today we are going to train exclusively in our human forms. Not all of us have received our wolves just yet." He paced in a tight circle, his piercing gaze sweeping over the teenagers before stopping squarely on me. He pointedly and maliciously glared right into my eyes, ensuring everyone knew exactly who he was talking about. "It is strictly important that you can defend yourself in case you, for some reason, are unable to shift into your wolf form. Whether you are severely injured, or dosed heavily with wolfsbane, it is a vital lesson."
A flush of hot embarrassment crept up my neck as the pack's attention shifted my way.
"I want you to split up into groups," he ordered. He pointed a thick finger at the towering twins. "Naturally, you two will face off against each other." Then, turning his cruel attention back to me, he gave me absolutely no chance to object or prepare mentally. "Elara, you fight against Tazia."
My stomach dropped completely into my shoes. He walked away immediately, abandoning me in the dirt.
I looked uncertainly across the ring. Tazia. She was one of Vespera’s most vicious, loyal friends, and I could already see her hungrily sizing me up. We moved over to a secluded corner of the dirt ring. Tazia adopted a loose defensive stance, her hands raised, a mocking, high-pitched giggle escaping her lips that immediately grated on my already frayed nerves.
I swallowed hard, looking over my shoulder. The rest of the pack had already begun sparring. Varek and Zaric were going full throttle at each other, their movements so incredibly fast they were almost blurs of muscle and raw aggression. It was deeply terrifying and impressive.
My hands grew clammy as I turned my attention back to the nightmare standing in front of me.
"You have absolutely no chance," Tazia smirked, flipping her long dark hair over her shoulder. Her eyes danced with cruel amusement. "Why don’t you show me what you’ve got?" she taunted, supremely confident that I was no match for her.
Before my mind could even process the official start of the spar, Tazia ruthlessly launched her attack. She closed the distance in a flash. Her fist shot out, landing a brutal, agonizing punch directly into my unprotected stomach.
A strangled gasp tore from my throat as all the air was violently forced out of my lungs. Before I could even bend over in pain, she grabbed my shoulders and drove a sharp, unforgiving knee straight up into my face.
White-hot pain exploded across my nose and cheekbones. My vision flashed brilliant white. I dropped to the dirt like a heavy stone, gasping desperately for air that my bruised lungs refused to accept. The sharp, metallic taste of fresh blood instantly flooded my mouth, pooling under my tongue.
Tazia danced backward lightly on her toes, her eyes shining with malicious delight. "This is going to be even easier than I thought!" she loudly crowed to the watching crowd, laughing out loud. "You’re so weak, it’s almost pitiful."
*Pitiful.*
Hearing that exact word triggered a sharp realization in my spinning mind. As I lay in the dirt, wiping the fresh, warm blood dripping from my split lip, I finally understood my father's true, sickening motive. He desperately wanted this public humiliation. He wanted me physically beaten down, humiliated in front of the entire pack, until I was forced into completely submitting as Vespera’s personal omega. He wanted to break my spirit entirely, making me pliant for my sister's future abuse.
A spark of hot, defensive anger ignited in my chest. I wasn't going to let him win that easily.
I slowly climbed back to my trembling feet. The rough dirt and small pebbles scraped against my palms. I winced from the throbbing pain radiating across my face, but I defiantly raised my bare fists.
"Are you ready for more?" Tazia hissed like a snake, bouncing lightly on her feet, rocking back and forth as she raised her guard.
I bit the inside of my cheek. Several groups around us had halted their own spars to watch the pathetic show. I even saw the imposing Alpha twins glancing over with mild interest. I knew I was going to look like an idiot, but I had to fight back.
Tazia pursed her lips into an ugly sneer and lunged forward again, throwing a heavy right hook aimed directly for my jaw.
Something entirely foreign clicked inside my brain. Pure, untapped instinct took completely over. My body moved entirely on its own. I gracefully and swiftly ducked under her swinging arm, pivoting my body weight to the side to avoid the strike. As she stumbled forward, carried by her own uncoordinated momentum, I planted my feet firmly into the dirt and threw a powerful punch of my own.
My knuckles connected squarely and devastatingly with the delicate center of Tazia’s face. The force of the impact sent a jarring shockwave up my own forearm.
*CRACK.*
The sickening sound of breaking bone echoed loudly across the quieted training grounds. Blood instantly spurted from Tazia's nose, splashing bright crimson across her chin and the collar of her shirt.
She staggered backward, howling in absolute agony. Her hands flew up to clutch her ruined face.
I stood perfectly frozen, entirely horrified by my own sudden, explosive strength. I had simply lashed out blindly, relying on raw survival instinct.
"Oh my god," I stammered out an apology, panic quickly flooding my system. "I’m so sorry... I didn't mean to do it."
Tazia removed her hands from her face, staring at the thick blood coating her fingers. She went absolutely hysterical.
"You bitch!" she shrieked at the top of her lungs, her voice cracking with pure fury. "You broke my nose!"
Blinded by sheer rage, Tazia launched herself at me again, throwing all training discipline completely out the window. She was swinging wildly, intending to cause serious damage.
Fear firmly taking the reins of my body, I threw my arms up, bracing my forearms to block her frantic, uncoordinated blows. Her fists rained down on me, but finding a split-second opening in her wild assault, I shifted my weight and kicked out hard. The flat of my boot caught Tazia right in the center of her stomach.
She doubled over instantly, wheezing violently for breath as the impact forced the air from her lungs. She stumbled back a few steps, her eyes watering profusely.
I watched fearfully as she slowly straightened up. The humiliation of being put down by the pack's punching bag was burning brightly through her. Her eyes darkened with pure, unadulterated menace. The hatred in her gaze was thick enough to suffocate on.
"You think you can beat me?" she asked in a low, trembling voice. "You think I would let a little bitch like you defeat me?"
I frantically glanced over my shoulder, desperately searching the crowd for my father. He was the one managing this session, he needed to stop this. But there was absolutely no sign of him. He had intentionally vanished, leaving me to the wolves. However, I did see the towering figures of Zaric and Varek. The Alpha twins were eyeing Tazia with serious concern, beginning to push their broad shoulders through the gathered crowd.
Suddenly, a low, monstrous growl ripped through the crisp morning air.
My blood ran ice cold. I snapped my head back around and froze entirely. Tazia was completely ignoring the strict human-only training rules. She was shifting right in the middle of a sparring ring. Thick, dark fur violently erupted from her bare skin, ripping through her clothes. I could hear the horrifying, wet sound of her bones snapping and rearranging rapidly. Her fingernails elongated into deadly, razor-sharp claws. Within seconds, she lunged at me, fully transformed into her massive, terrifying wolf form.
She fully intended to rip my throat out. She was going to kill me right here in the dirt.
Paralyzed by primal terror, I couldn't move a single muscle. I tightly braced myself, squeezing my eyes shut as I waited for the agonizing tear of canine teeth sinking deeply into my flesh.
"Stop!" two commanding voices yelled out in perfect, earth-shattering unison.
Before the massive wolf could sink her teeth into my neck, Zaric and Varek moved with blinding, impossible speed. They blurred across the training ring, placing their broad, heavily muscled bodies directly between me and the attacking beast.
An inescapable, suffocating Alpha aura exploded outward from the twins. The sheer pressure of their overwhelming dominance radiated through the air like a physical shockwave. It was so intense it forced the breath from my lungs and made my knees tremble. The raw power slammed directly into Tazia's wolf. She crashed clumsily to her feet in the dirt, whining and snarling in absolute, involuntary submission as the Alpha command physically forced her head down.
Zaric and Varek stood tall, their arms crossed over their thick chests, glaring down at the submitting wolf with pure disgust.
"Shift back," Varek ordered, his voice dropping into a deadly, vibrating growl that demanded absolute obedience.
Terrified by the sheer weight of the Alpha command, Tazia complied instantly. She shifted back into her human form, weeping softly as she curled in the dirt, trying to cover her bare human form. Another pack member quickly rushed forward, tossing a loose shirt over her trembling shoulders.
The heavy, suffocating silence of the training ring was finally broken by my father’s booming, authoritative voice. He suddenly reappeared, pushing his way into the center of the ring.
"Cheating is strictly prohibited!" he roared at the weeping girl, sounding entirely disgusted by her display. "Leave immediately and see the Alpha for your punishment!"
Tazia fled the training ring without looking at a single person, her cheeks burning bright pink with profound humiliation.
My father then turned his cold, calculating gaze to the imposing Alpha twins. Instead of thanking them for saving my life, he offered a deeply insulting, backhanded compliment.
"Good work for stopping her," he told them, his tone completely flat. "But I strictly warn you, do not put yourselves in danger for somebody like Elara." He gestured toward me as I stood trembling in the dirt, explicitly calling me out in front of the entire pack, ensuring everyone heard my utter lack of value. "She is entirely dispensable. Whereas you two, being future Alphas, are incredibly valuable. In the future, I demand that you leave the disciplining and the interventions solely to me."
Zaric visibly tensed at the blatant disrespect for a pack member's life. "We meant no offense," he murmured defensively, his eyes narrowing slightly. "We simply stepped in to prevent future injuries."
Varek said absolutely nothing. He merely stared expressionlessly at the Beta, his jaw tightly clenched as he assessed my cruel father.
My father offered a fake, entirely empty smile that didn't even come close to reaching his cold eyes. "Had my daughter truly been in mortal danger, I would have intervened and taken the appropriate measures myself," he boldly claimed.
I stared at the dirt, my chest tight. I knew he was lying through his teeth to save face. He had vanished on purpose, hoping nature would take its course. Without the twins' sudden, powerful intervention, I would undoubtedly be dead right now, my blood soaking this very dirt.
The powerful Alphas clearly did not look convinced by my father's hollow assurances. They turned their broad backs to him and began to walk away, striding through the parting crowd without giving me a single second glance.
I desperately wanted to call out to them. I wanted to scream my gratitude, to thank them for saving my miserable life when my own father wouldn't. I opened my mouth, but my frozen, terrified voice utterly refused to work.
