The Cruel Verdict

Elara POV

The heavy front door clicked shut with a dull, resounding thud that echoed down the long hallway. The very moment the latch caught, I knew Zaric and Varek had finally left the premises. A shaky breath I hadn't realized I was holding slipped past my lips, and the suffocating tension that had gripped my chest for the past hour loosened just a fraction. I turned my attention back to the pile of wrinkled clothes on the ironing board, seeking a brief moment of refuge in the cramped, windowless confines of the laundry room. It was tiny, smelling faintly of harsh detergent and the metallic heat of the iron, but it was usually the one place in the house where I could go completely unnoticed.

Not today.

Almost instantly, a dark shadow fell over the threshold. I looked up, and my stomach plummeted. Morrigan stood blocking the narrow doorway, her sudden presence instantly sucking all the breathable air from the small space. My stepmother’s face, which usually maintained a mask of haughty, aristocratic elegance, was currently twisted in sheer, unadulterated hostility. She was a more mature, polished version of Vespera, possessing the same striking features, but her green eyes were currently blazing with a frightening, furious intensity as they locked onto me.

"What on earth was that?" Morrigan snarled, her voice dropping into a vicious, demanding hiss.

She stepped aggressively into the laundry room, invading my personal space as she planted her hands firmly on her hips. She glared down her nose at me, eyeing me fiercely like I was a piece of filth she had just scraped off her designer shoe.

I paused, carefully setting the hot iron down upright on the board. My mind raced, frantically trying to piece together what I could have possibly done wrong in the last hour. I looked at her questioningly, genuine confusion masking my rising anxiety.

"I’m sorry, what was what?" I asked dumbly, keeping my tone as neutral as possible.

I had made a deliberate, concerted effort to remain completely out of the way while Vespera entertained Zaric and Varek. I had stayed upstairs, hidden in the shadows, purposefully keeping out of their sight to avoid any unnecessary conflict. As far as I knew, my existence had been entirely undetectable.

"The way you’ve been acting," Morrigan hissed, taking another step forward until I was practically backed against the vibrating washing machine. "Vespera told me exactly what you were doing out in the hallway. She told me how you purposefully tried to insult her, how you threw yourself in their path and almost ran into the twins because you weren’t looking. What were you thinking, trying to humiliate your sister in front of her future mates?"

Her blatantly false accusations hit me like a physical slap to the face. Vespera was lying. Of course, she was lying. She always twisted the narrative to make me the malicious villain of her perfect story.

"I didn't insult anyone," I began heatedly, the raw injustice of the situation flaring wildly in my chest. "I was just—"

"Don't," Morrigan snapped, holding up a manicured hand and violently cutting off my protests. "Don't bother trying to spin your pathetic web of lies to me. I know exactly what you are."

I swallowed hard, biting down on the inside of my cheek so forcefully I tasted the sharp, metallic tang of copper. I fumed in absolute silence. Years of bitter experience in this house had taught me one undeniable truth: any attempt at self-defense was utterly useless against Morrigan's blatant favoritism. It absolutely wouldn't matter what logical argument I presented, or what the actual truth was. She would always, without fail, aggressively defend her precious daughter and find some twisted reason to complain about my mere existence.

"Just save your breath," she interrupted fiercely, her eyes sweeping over me with deep disgust. "Get out of here and go get dinner ready. Your father will be home soon from the border patrols, and he’ll be hungry. See to it that you don't ruin the food like you ruin everything else."

Swallowing my rising protests and the deep, suffocating injustice of the moment, I kept my head lowered. I scurried past her, pressing my back against the doorframe to avoid brushing against her clothes, and silently retreated down the hall toward the kitchen to take on the heavy burden of preparing the family dinner alone.

For the next hour, I chopped, stirred, and cooked, keeping my movements robotic. The kitchen was massive, yet it felt like a prison cell. I knew Morrigan was lurking somewhere nearby, actively looking for any minor excuse to grow angry with me again, so I made sure everything was perfectly executed.

When the elaborate meal was finally ready, I carefully carried the heavy platters into the grand dining room. My father and Morrigan were already sitting at the massive mahogany table, waiting with matching, impatient frowns on their faces. I meticulously plated their food, placing a steaming portion in front of each of them with practiced precision. Once they were served, I took my own small plate and walked to the far end of the long table, sitting completely isolated. I was treated more like a lowly servant than a daughter of this house. Just like I did every night, I stared down at my food, moving my fork around listlessly.

"How was work, sweetheart?" Morrigan cooed, her entire demeanor transforming in an instant. She smiled brilliantly, her voice dripping with sugary affection as she gazed at my father.

My father, a massive, imposing man whose sheer Beta presence heavily dominated the room, merely grunted as he cut into his meat. "Stressful. There’s been a rising number of sightings of rogues near our borders. We’ve had to heavily increase our daily patrols and secure the perimeter extra tight to prevent any breaches. More men are constantly patrolling the outer grounds, and we’ve started actively training some of the younger, inexperienced males so that they can learn to properly defend the pack." He let out a heavy, exhausted sigh. "The work is absolutely never-ending."

Then, the atmosphere in the room shifted. My father paused his movements, his broad shoulders tensing. His dark eyes slowly turned down the length of the table, bypassing the empty chairs, and locked directly onto me. A freezing, hateful glare settled over his harsh features, chilling me straight to the bone.

"But then again," he stated deliberately, his voice dropping to an icy, venomous pitch, "the fewer people killed during rogue attacks, the better."

The comment was a targeted, agonizing strike. It was a vicious reminder of my past, a direct reference to the horrific night the rogues attacked, and a direct, unforgiving blame for the brutal death of my mother. All the blood instantly drained from my face. My chest tightened so painfully I could barely draw breath, and I felt as though an invisible hand were crushing my windpipe. I kept my head bowed, my appetite completely eradicated, praying he would look away.

Morrigan shot a brief, uncomfortable look in my direction before she quickly reached over across the table, placing her hand gently over my father's. Her touch successfully drew his dark attention back to her, steering his focus away from my paralyzed form. When he looked at her, his eyes immediately softened, the raw hatred vanishing.

"Honey, guess what," Morrigan said, her eyes suddenly dancing with ambitious, barely contained excitement.

My father raised a thick brow, intrigued. "Hmm, considering that look on your face, I’m guessing it has something to do with Vespera."

Morrigan laughed out loud, throwing her head back in sheer delight. "Zaric and Varek came to speak to her today. Am I right in guessing that the official negotiations have finally been concluded?" She leaned forward eagerly, spearing my father with a fierce, hungry gaze. "Is my daughter going to be the official Luna of the pack?"

My father grinned, his entire demeanor completely shifting from exhaustion to immense pride. There was a bright, triumphant gleam in his eyes as he looked at his new wife, his large hand gently squeezing hers in return. They were entirely wrapped up in their shared victory, completely and utterly ignoring my existence at the far end of the table. I might as well have been a ghost.

"Negotiations are fully finalized," my father confirmed, leaning back in his heavy chair and taking a slow, satisfied sip of his rich red wine. "Alpha Kaelen has officially agreed to the arrangement. The twins will officially take Vespera as their chosen mate, and she will step up as Luna."

"That is wonderful!" Morrigan gasped.

"However," my father continued, raising a finger, "there is a strict stipulation. They must wait until Vespera is officially eighteen. Furthermore, the twins will take her, provided that all parties completely and officially reject their true fated mates when they turn eighteen, should the Moon Goddess ever cross their paths."

Morrigan waved a dismissive, elegant hand through the air, completely unconcerned by the gravity of rejecting a soulmate. "Vespera will have absolutely no problems with those conditions. She’s wanted to be the Luna of this pack since she was a little girl. She will reject anyone to secure that title. But what if the future Alphas find their fated mate?"

"The exact same conditions apply to them," my father stated confidently. "They are to completely reject their fated mate. Since Zaric and Varek turn eighteen first, they will have a short, predetermined window where they might stumble upon their mate before they take Vespera. But the odds of their true mates being within this specific pack are practically nil. If they were here, the boys would have already started developing feelings, or their inner wolves would be going crazy sensing them by now. They are acting perfectly normal. So, the deal stands."

The parents bathed in the warm glow of their shared triumph, envisioning a future of absolute power.

Suddenly, my father lowered his wine glass, the smile fading from his lips as he raised a cold, evaluating brow at me down the length of the table. He bluntly stated, "Now, the only remaining issue is deciding exactly what we are going to do with Elara."

I jolted slightly in my chair, utterly surprised that he was even bothering to acknowledge I was still breathing in the same room.

Morrigan’s eyes immediately lit up with a dark, calculating malice. The vicious gears in her head were turning rapidly. "Well, I was actually thinking about that," she began smoothly, a sickeningly sweet tone coating her words. "Since Elara and Vespera have practically grown up under the same roof and are about the exact same age..."

She trailed off, leaving an expectant, dramatic pause hanging in the tense air.

My father narrowed his eyes. "What does that have to do with anything?"

Morrigan let out a theatrical sigh. "Well, think about it, darling. If Vespera is going to be the Luna of the most powerful pack in the region, she is inevitably going to need a dedicated, lifelong omega to tend to her every single need. Someone to manage her schedule, lay out her clothes, clean her quarters, and serve her." She paused, her green eyes locking onto me with pure spite. "Why shouldn't that omega be Elara?"

Hearing those devastating words, my heart instantly turned to heavy, sinking stone in my chest. Lifelong servitude. A permanent slave to my cruel sister’s every selfish whim. The absolute horror of the idea paralyzed my lungs.

"It would be incredibly beneficial for Vespera to have someone bound to her that she can control," Morrigan continued eagerly, pitching the nightmare as a brilliant strategy. "And we could still keep an eye on Elara at the main pack house. It’s the perfect solution."

Desperate, terrified by the sheer magnitude of the trap closing around me, I looked frantically to my father. I prayed, begging the Moon Goddess for even a singular shred of mercy or parental protection. He couldn't possibly agree to reduce his own flesh and blood to a lowly omega servant.

But instead of outright rejection, my father was nodding slowly. A thoughtful, calculating look washed over his rugged face, indicating he fully agreed with his new wife.

"You know, that could definitely work," my father mused aloud. He shot me a frosty, sidelong glance that held absolutely no warmth. "Elara is turning eighteen soon. It is a high, unprecedented honor to work directly for your Luna." He sneered, his lip curling in utter disgust as he thoroughly dismissed my entire existence. "And Goddess knows you are too puny, too incredibly weak, and entirely unworthy to ever inherit my Beta title. You don't possess a single ounce of the strength required. Omega work suits you."

A rising tide of bitter resentment and blinding panic consumed my rational mind. The thought of being legally bound to clean up after Vespera for the rest of my miserable life snapped whatever restraint I had left. The words bypassed my filter, bursting violently from my throat.

"I fully intend on leaving the pack the exact moment I turn eighteen!" I blurted out loudly, my hands trembling as I gripped the edge of the table.

The dining room plunged into a suffocating, dead silence. My father slowly stopped chewing. He deliberately set his heavy silver fork down on his porcelain plate. He slowly cocked his head to the side, his expression darkening into something truly menacing.

"No," he said flatly, his voice devoid of any emotion.

Shocked by his immediate dismissal, I gasped, my chest heaving. "You... you cannot stop me!"

My father merely smirked, a terrifying expression of sadistic pleasure stretching across his scarred face. "Ah, but I can, and I will." He leaned forward, taking immense joy in reminding me of a cruel, ancient pack law that I had desperately tried to block from my memory for years. "Normal rules dictate that average pack members can freely leave once they reach maturity. But for those carrying direct Beta or Alpha bloodlines in their veins, the law is completely different."

My blood ran instantly cold. All the color drained from my face once more.

"Individuals carrying Beta blood legally require the direct, explicit, and written permission of the Alpha to sever ties and leave the territory," my father chillingly assured me, watching the realization shatter my hopes. "And I guarantee you, Alpha Kaelen will never, ever grant you that permission. And once Zaric and Varek officially take over leadership? They will never let you leave either. You are legally trapped."

He pointed a thick, calloused finger aggressively in my direction. "You will stay right here in this pack, and you will do exactly as I tell you."

The air in the room felt incredibly thick, choking me from the inside out. I was cornered. There was no legal way out of this abusive nightmare. Through trembling, pale lips, I looked at the man who was supposed to protect me, and I whispered a heartbreaking question that had plagued my soul for years.

"If you don't want me here... if you hate me so much, why won't you just let me go?"

My father’s reaction was terrifyingly explosive.

"Because!" he roared violently, his voice booming like thunder within the enclosed walls. He violently slammed his heavy, massive hand flat onto the wooden table with a deafening crack that rattled the expensive crystal glasses and made me physically jump out of my seat.

"Because I haven't punished you enough for killing my mate!" he snarled, the raw, unfiltered hatred in his booming voice completely paralyzing me. His face was flushed dark red with unbridled fury, his eyes wild and unhinged. "Now get out of my sight right now, before I lose what little self-control I have left!"

Terrified out of my mind, my survival instincts finally kicked in. I scrambled frantically up from my wooden chair, the legs screeching harshly against the floorboards. I didn't dare look back at his wrathful face. But as I spun around to flee the dining room, my tear-filled eyes briefly caught sight of Morrigan.

She was sitting perfectly still, a vicious, deeply satisfied smile plastered across her face.
