Endless Torment
Elara POV
Smack.
The sheer, brutal force of the impact sent my head careening violently backward. A jarring, physical shock ripped through my jaw, and my neck cracked in sharp protest. The loud, sickening sound of flesh slapping against flesh echoed off the bedroom walls, leaving a harsh ringing in my ears. I stumbled a half-step back, my hand instinctively flying up to cradle my burning cheek. The metallic taste of blood immediately pooled on my tongue from where my teeth had bitten into the inside of my lip.
I gritted my teeth, fighting through the stinging pain, and forced my head back up. I knew the rules of this house all too well. If I dared to retaliate, if I even showed a fraction of the anger boiling in my chest, it would only bring down a much more severe punishment upon me.
Standing before me, with an air of untouchable arrogance, was my stepsister, Vespera. She didn't even bother to look at my red, swelling face. Instead, her attention was casually, infuriatingly fixed on examining her own perfectly manicured fingernails. She picked at an invisible speck of dust on her glittering polish, utterly indifferent to the pain she had just inflicted on me. A malicious, triumphant smile stretched slowly across her face.
"I honestly do not know why my mother and your father insist on keeping a pathetic stray like you around in this house," Vespera gloated, finally lowering her hand to cross her arms over her chest. She narrowed her bright blue eyes at me, her gaze dripping with pure contempt. "But I promise you this, Elara. The absolute moment I ascend to the position of Luna, you will be unceremoniously kicked out of this pack so fast it will make your ugly little head spin."
I clamped my jaw shut and bit my tongue so hard the metallic taste intensified. It was always completely pointless to argue with Vespera. I kept my eyes fixed firmly on the polished wooden floorboards, swallowing down the bitter resentment that threatened to choke me.
Everything had become a living hell recently. Vespera had always been impossible to live with, but her inflated ego had swollen to unbearable proportions over the last few weeks. My father, Garris, the acting Beta of the Crimson Moon Pack, had officially entered into formal negotiations with Alpha Kaelen. Together, they had finalized the arrangement to make Vespera the chosen mate for the Alpha’s twin sons, Zaric and Varek Vandor.
The twins were merely days away from celebrating their milestone eighteenth birthday. The entire pack was practically vibrating with anticipation for the grand party, a massive event that would officially mark the twins coming of age and stepping into their dual Alpha roles. And Vespera, already the most popular and undisputedly the meanest girl in the entire pack, was walking around like she already wore the Luna crown.
"I need my clothes ironed to absolute perfection for the upcoming birthday party," Vespera imperiously demanded, breaking through my bitter thoughts. She took a threatening step closer, her voice dropping into a sharp, commanding hiss. "And there had better not be a single crinkle or imperfection in the fabric. Do you understand me? When the twins have their ceremony in a few days, I intend to be the most flawless girl in that room. As their future Luna, I need to show off to every single person in this pack exactly how beautiful I look by their side."
She glared at me, waiting for my submission. I rubbed my throbbing cheek, the physical sting pushing me into a quiet, desperate corner. Without thinking, a fragile defense slipped past my lips.
"You aren't the Luna yet," I pointed out timidly, my voice trembling slightly as I stared down at the ground. "When they turn eighteen, the twins might still find their true fated mates."
The moment the words left my mouth, the atmosphere in the room violently shifted. Vespera’s eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous intent. The smugness vanished from her face, replaced by a dark, twisting fury. She hated being reminded of the Moon Goddess's ultimate law. Every shifter had a fated mate, and while it was incredibly rare for twins to share one, the possibility still loomed heavily over her arranged future.
"They have already explicitly agreed to reject their fated mates!" Vespera snarled, lunging forward so quickly I had to step backward to avoid her raised hand. "They are doing it for the greater good of the pack!"
I flinched, keeping my head ducked, but Vespera wasn't finished. She leaned in, a cruel, satisfied smirk returning to her lips as she spitefully laid out her guaranteed victory.
"Unless their fated mate happens to be of pure Alpha blood, she is of no real use to them anyway," she purred, her tone dripping with venomous pride. "I, on the other hand, am of pure Beta bloodline. I am overwhelmingly popular. I am the undisputed, perfect candidate for the Luna role. I am exactly what this pack needs to remain strong, and Alpha Kaelen and Luna Vanya know it."
She was right, and the absolute unfairness of it all crushed heavily against my chest. Vespera was doted on, praised, and worshipped by the pack's elite. Alpha Kaelen and Luna Vanya found her blonde hair and blue eyes perfectly enchanting.
In stark contrast, I was the undisputed pack outcast. My very existence was a miserable stain on my father's pristine reputation. I looked absolutely nothing like the celebrated ideal of the Crimson Moon Pack. My dark raven hair and curvy, generous figure stood in stark opposition to Vespera’s celebrated blonde, slender perfection. Every time I was forced to stand next to her, she physically towered over me, a constant, looming reminder of my sheer inadequacy.
But my appearance wasn't the real reason I was universally despised. I was the child nobody wanted, wrongfully blamed for causing my own mother’s tragic death during a horrific rogue attack years ago. I had just been a terrified little girl, caught in the absolute wrong place at the wrong time, but the pack needed a scapegoat. They needed someone to hate for the loss of their beloved former Beta female, and that hatred had been placed squarely on my small, trembling shoulders.
"Listen here, you pathetic mutt," Vespera sneered with pure venom, jerking my chin up to force me to look into her mocking eyes. "Nobody is going to ruin this for me. And it certainly isn't going to be you. Do you seriously believe a murderer could ever have a chance at being Luna?"
I froze. *Murderer.* The word punched the breath right out of my lungs. It was the label they had burned into my identity. I slowly shook my head in weak denial, my mouth going completely dry.
Vespera let out a cold, sarcastic laugh, dropping her hand in disgust. "Get out of my sight and go tend to the laundry. And stop standing there like an idiot before I hit you again."
I didn't need to be told twice. I ducked my head and practically threw myself out of the oppressive room, fleeing into the hallway. I was on the absolute verge of tears, my vision blurring rapidly as the humiliation and helplessness clawed at my throat. I just wanted to get downstairs, to bury myself in the mindless, mundane chores and escape her suffocating presence.
In my blind, desperate haste, I rushed around the corner and collided violently into a solid, unyielding figure.
The breath was violently knocked from my lungs upon impact. I stumbled backward, gasping for air, expecting to see a wall. Instead, my terrified eyes met the furious glare of my stepmother, Morrigan.
"Elara!" Morrigan scolded immediately, her sharp voice slicing through the air. "Watch where you are going! You clumsy, incompetent girl!"
I opened my mouth to apologize, but the words died instantly in my throat. My heart slammed painfully against my ribs, not just from the collision, but from the sudden, terrifying realization of exactly who was accompanying my stepmother.
Standing imposingly before me in the middle of the hallway were Zaric and Varek Vandor.
The Alpha twins themselves.
I was momentarily paralyzed, my feet rooted securely to the floorboards. Their towering, broad-shouldered frames seemed to suck all the available oxygen out of the narrow corridor, halting me entirely in my tracks. They stood with an effortless, predatory grace, radiating raw, dominant power that commanded instant submission. I slowly dragged my gaze up, taking in their matching, piercing hazel eyes, their dark, messy hair, and the hard, sculpted lines of their jaws.
"Please forgive my stepdaughter," Morrigan quickly shifted her tone, desperately apologizing on my behalf while shooting me a glare that promised severe punishment later. "She is clearly lacking basic manners today."
I stood there, completely tongue-tied, my cheeks burning with intense shame. Why did my brain always short-circuit around them?
Before the heavy silence could drag on any longer, the tense moment was violently interrupted. Vespera rushed enthusiastically out of her bedroom and into the hallway. She didn't even hesitate as she practically ran toward the twins, violently shoving me aside. The force of her shove sent my shoulder crashing hard into the wall, but she didn't even glance back. She threw her arms securely around Zaric first, pressing her body against his in a highly physical greeting.
"Zaric! Varek! What a fantastic surprise," Vespera squealed loudly, her voice practically dripping with artificial sweetness.
Zaric caught her waist, maintaining a highly guarded expression on his handsome face. He didn't smile, but he didn't pull away either. "We thought we would come and visit our chosen mate for a little bit, given that our milestone eighteenth birthday is rapidly approaching," Zaric explained smoothly, his deep voice vibrating in the hallway. "It won't be long until our Alpha and Luna ceremony is organized."
Vespera beamed with absolute triumph, confidently releasing Zaric to move over and embrace Varek.
As she did, Varek didn't look at her. Instead, his glittering, incredibly sharp hazel eyes deliberately locked onto my shrinking form against the wall. His gaze swept over my worn-out clothes, my dark hair, and the swelling red mark on my cheek. There was no pity in his eyes, only pure, unfiltered disdain.
He narrowed his eyes, his voice crudely cutting through the air, cold and merciless. "Are you still here?"
The heavy, uncomfortable tension instantly permeated the hallway. I physically shrank back against the wallpaper, wishing the floor would simply open up and swallow me whole.
Sensing the mood shifting, Morrigan quickly stepped in, waving her hand at me dismissively. "Yes, Elara. Go down and finish your mundane chores. We have guests."
I didn't say a single word. I lowered my eyes to the floorboards and quietly retreated, slipping past them and hurrying toward the wooden stairs. With every step I took, I could feel the agonizing sting of their collective, judgmental gazes burning fiercely into my back. It was a suffocating, heavy heat that made me want to run until my legs gave out.
Once I reached the floor above, I gripped the wooden banister tightly and paused on the landing. My chest heaved with silent, shallow breaths. Down below, the voices began to drift back up the stairwell, echoing perfectly in the quiet house.
"She is so utterly weak," I overheard Vespera laughing, the sound high-pitched and mocking. "What a pathetic loser."
There was a brief pause, followed by Zaric’s deep, mild murmur. "She is your sister, Vespera. You should at least try to tolerate her."
The air practically turned to ice. Vespera’s voice snapped back, utterly cold and deeply offended. "We are only half-sisters. And that is purely an unfortunate biological accident. I vehemently declare that I do not want to be associated with a murderer in any capacity. She killed her own mother, Zaric. She is a stain on this house."
I closed my eyes, a single, hot tear slipping down my bruised cheek. I waited, holding my breath, foolishly hoping that at least one of the future Alphas would tell her to stop. That they would point out I was just a child when the rogues attacked.
Instead, Varek’s cold, ruthless growl drifted up the stairs, carrying absolute, devastating finality to my ears.
"Don't feel sorry for her, Zaric," Varek told his twin harshly, his voice completely void of any empathy or warmth. "Vespera is right. She killed her own mother. Absolutely nobody in the pack likes her, and for good reason."
Hearing those devastating words fall directly from the lips of the future Alphas shattered whatever tiny shred of hope I had left in my chest. Tears flooded my eyes in a thick, blinding rush, pouring silently down my face. I stood trembling on the landing, my fingers digging so hard into the wood of the banister that my knuckles turned stark white.
As I slowly turned and walked away toward the laundry room, something inside me finally snapped. I realized in that exact moment that I was completely stripped of the energy to ever try and convince them of my innocence. I was exhausted. I was done begging for scraps of understanding from people who fundamentally despised my existence.
I internally resolved to let them believe whatever they wanted to believe. Let them call me a murderer. Let them call me an outcast.
A fierce, burning determination suddenly took deep root in the center of my profound despair. When I turned eighteen, I was leaving this pack for good. Come heaven or hell, I was going to pack my meager belongings, cross the Crimson Moon borders, and never look back. I would be a rogue if I had to. I would be anything but this.
However, as soon as that fragile vow settled in my heart, a dark, shuddering realization quickly followed, turning my blood to ice. Vespera was going to be Luna in just a few short days. I was acutely aware that the likelihood of being violently kicked out of the territory, or worse, thrown to the rogues before I could safely leave on my own terms, was very, very high.
An overwhelming sense of dread for my immediate future settled heavily over my shoulders as I stared down the dark hallway, wondering exactly how many days I had left to survive.
