Shattered Solace
Elara POV
My father didn't even spare me a second glance. He just turned his back on the training ring and walked away, his broad shoulders stiff with cold indifference, leaving me completely abandoned in the dirt. I hesitated for only a fraction of a second before my survival instincts kicked in. I had to catch them. Pushing past the throbbing ache in my battered limbs, I hurried in the direction of the departing Alpha twins. I was practically sprinting across the trampled green grass, my bare feet digging into the earth just to catch up to their long, powerful strides.
My chest heaved violently as I closed the distance. "Wait!" I gasped, the sound ragged and desperate in my throat.
Hearing my frantic footsteps, both of them paused and slowly turned around. Their twin brows arched in unison, their identical expressions unreadable masks of pure Alpha authority.
I pressed a trembling hand flat against my chest, coughing slightly as I desperately tried to catch my breath. "I wanted to thank you," I wheezed, my voice finally finding its footing in the heavy, suffocating silence between us. "I know you didn't have to step in and help me back there, but I really—"
"It would have looked terrible for us if we hadn't intervened," Zaric abruptly interrupted. His tone was like cracking ice, completely devoid of warmth or basic empathy. He didn't even look directly at me at first, instead sharing a significant, tight glance with his brother. "She blatantly broke pack rules, Elara. Only a complete coward would shift and attack a pack member who is still in human form. It is our absolute duty as future leaders to step in."
I flushed, a wave of hot humiliation creeping up my neck at his cold, clinical dismissal of my gratitude. While Zaric looked utterly dismissive, Varek was eyeing me thoughtfully. His intense, calculating gaze swept over my frame, lingering deliberately on my bruised, dirt-streaked arms and exhausted posture.
"How come you don't train with the rest of the pack?" Varek asked.
I blinked up at him, genuinely taken aback by the question. This was incredibly rare. Neither of them had ever shown the slightest sliver of curiosity or interest in my life before. They usually just ignored my existence entirely. Did this mean they actually wanted to understand my situation?
"Well, um," I started, shifting my weight nervously under their towering, deeply judgmental presence. "My father hasn't ever seen the need for me to train. Vespera was always the one meant to take over his Beta position anyway. At least... until..." I gestured awkwardly toward the two massive men, my cheeks burning a bright, embarrassed pink. "Until you both chose to mate with her."
Hearing my stepsister's name, Zaric’s expression immediately hardened into a dark, unforgiving scowl. He stepped closer, his broad frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over me.
"Your lack of a formal title doesn’t mean you shouldn't learn how to defend yourself," Zaric countered icily, his eyes narrowing into sharp slits. "Every single member of this pack, no matter how remarkably low-ranking they are, needs to be capable of protecting it. Or do you honestly think you are above everyone else here? Do you think the rules just don't apply to you?"
I shrank back, instantly intimidated by his aggressive, dominant posture. "No!" I stammered out, shaking my head frantically as my anxiety spiked. "No, of course not. I... I didn't mean..."
"When we officially become Alphas, that absolute lack of training is going to change," Varek chimed in. His voice was slightly lower than his brother's, a deep, vibrating rumble in his heavy chest, but it carried no less cruelty. "You will be required to attend mandatory training, and most likely extra sessions to make up for your lifelong laziness. You are already the sole reason for one of our most beloved pack members being killed." Varek stepped directly into my space, his eyes flashing dangerously as he viciously reminded me of my darkest trauma. "Do you really want to be responsible for the death of another innocent wolf just because of your pathetic weakness?"
The accusation hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. The memory of my mother's brutal death flared in my mind, a gaping, bleeding wound that had never been allowed to heal.
"I didn't kill my mother," I protested weakly, my voice cracking under the sheer weight of their collective disdain. "It wasn't my fault. The rogue attack wasn't my fault..."
But my desperate defense made absolutely no difference. It never did. Zaric merely sneered down his nose at me, letting out a harsh, mocking scoff that cut right through my fragile heart.
"Save the innocent victim act," Zaric snapped, his patience entirely evaporated. "We’ve all heard exactly what a massive troublemaker you are. Do you really think Vespera hasn't extensively told us about your 'true nature'? We know exactly what kind of a bitch you are behind closed doors. She’s told us how you treat her like dirt, acting like she's a slave instead of your own flesh and blood."
My jaw dropped slightly as the horrible realization washed over me. Vespera. Of course. She had been feeding them vicious, calculated lies about me this entire time, deeply prejudicing them against me. She had expertly painted herself as the suffering angel and me as the absolute villain in their eyes.
Zaric leaned in slightly, his handsome face twisting as he delivered a brutal, venomous threat. "When we officially make Vespera our mate, you are going to find out very quickly what it is truly like to be ordered around, Elara. I highly suggest you prepare yourself for a miserable reality check."
With a chilling, triumphant smile that didn't even come close to reaching his eyes, Zaric turned his broad back on me and deliberately walked away, dismissing me like garbage.
My heart gave a sudden, agonizing pang in my chest. I watched Zaric’s retreating figure, my throat tightening so painfully I could barely swallow. Why did the opinion of these two cruel men hurt me so profoundly? I was used to being the outcast, used to the entire pack’s endless hatred, but hearing those venomous words spill directly from the mouths of the Alpha twins felt like a rusted blade twisting straight into my ribs.
Fighting back a fresh, humiliating wave of hot tears, I glared up at Varek, who still lingered in the grassy space his brother had just vacated. My hands balled into tight, shaking fists at my sides.
"Shouldn't you be following your brother like a loyal little shadow?" I asked waspishly, completely unable to keep the bitter, defensive edge out of my trembling voice.
Varek paused. The hard, masculine line of his jaw softened for a fraction of a second. Instead of snapping back or violently punishing me for my blatant disrespect, he offered a small, deeply reluctant smile. It was barely there, just a slight, genuine curve of his lips, but it completely threw me off guard.
"For what it’s worth," Varek murmured, his deep voice suddenly quiet and thoughtful, "your fighting was actually quite good for somebody who hasn't attended a single formal training session in her entire life."
Before my exhausted brain could even fully process the sheer shock of his words, Varek turned and resolutely headed after Zaric, his long strides eating up the distance until he was walking shoulder-to-shoulder with his twin.
I stood completely frozen in the middle of the training grounds. Had he really just praised me? His brief, shocking compliment ignited a tiny, incredibly warm spark of happiness deep inside my battered chest. It was a fleeting, rare spark of validation I hadn't felt in years. I watched their retreating backs, completely unable to tear my eyes away, marveling internally at what a striking, incredibly handsome pair they made. For a brief, stupid second, I felt a genuine glimmer of hope.
However, my solitary, fragile moment of solace was instantly and violently shattered.
A hand suddenly reached out from behind me, fingers digging viciously into the tender flesh of my upper arm. The brutal pinch was applied with such sudden, concentrated force that I gasped aloud. I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat, only to meet the cold, utterly furious eyes of my stepsister.
Vespera.
"Don't you ever even think of going near my mates again," Vespera snarled, her normally sweet, angelic face twisted into an ugly, hateful mask. She hissed the words through her perfect white teeth, her eyes practically vibrating with manic rage. "I see exactly what you are doing, Elara. Don't think for a second I don't see right through your pathetic little act. You're trying to gain their sympathy so they'll show you attention."
"Vespera, no, I was just—" I stammered, my heart racing as I desperately tried to pry her agonizing grip off my bruised arm. "I was just thanking them for what happened in the ring!"
"Acting like a slut," she interrupted sharply, aggressively tightening her painful grip until her perfectly manicured nails practically pierced my skin.
I inhaled sharply, a ragged hiss of pure pain escaping my lips as the pressure flared into agony.
Vespera leaned in, her face mere inches from mine, dropping her voice into a deadly, poisonous whisper. "Zaric and Varek are *my* mates. Mine. And next time, I won't be so nice about warning you to stay away." She shoved my arm slightly, her eyes blazing with absolute dominance. "You had better remember your place, Elara. Once I am officially crowned Luna of this pack, your very existence here will depend entirely on my mercy. Do not test me."
I stared at her, my mind frantically trying to process the sheer severity of her threat. But before my brain could even fully register the impending danger, Vespera’s free hand thrust out with blinding, terrifying speed.
Her solid knuckles connected incredibly hard right on the bridge of my already-damaged nose.
A sickening crunch echoed loudly in my ears. The explosive burst of physical agony was blinding. I doubled over instantly, letting out a strangled, muffled cry as my hands flew up to cup my face. Fresh, incredibly warm blood spurred out of my nostrils, instantly slipping through the gaps in my fingers. It flowed heavily down my chin, staining the front of my clothes with thick crimson drops that splattered violently onto the green grass below my feet.
Vespera stood tall above me, completely unfazed by the brutal physical violence she had just committed. I peered up at her through my bloody fingers, my vision swimming with pain. She was smirking down at my absolute agony, a deeply sadistic pleasure dancing freely in her cold eyes.
"Tazia gives you her regards," Vespera delivered the chilling message, her tone dripping with vicious, mock sweetness.
Clutching my bleeding, fiercely throbbing nose, I stumbled clumsily backwards, struggling just to keep my footing. The thick, metallic copper taste of my own blood coated the back of my throat, making me gag. Through a thick, blurry veil of pain-filled tears, I watched Vespera turn on her heel. She confidently walked away, her golden hair swaying beautifully down her back, looking every bit the perfect, flawless future Luna the entire pack believed her to be.
My chest heaved with ragged, wet breaths as the blood continued to drip from my chin. I dreaded the fast-approaching day my stepsister would officially take that Luna title. I stood there, utterly broken and bleeding out onto the training grounds, thinking miserably about the sheer injustice of my reality.
If only the Alpha twins could see the cruel, sadistic monster lurking just beneath Vespera’s angelic facade. If they could just peel back her perfect, manufactured mask, they might finally realize the horrible truth. They would see what she truly was, and they would finally see that I was never the wicked villain they so firmly believed me to be.
