Splashed A Drink On My Boss
Cora’s POV
Absolute panic seized my chest the very second I processed the sight before me. My breath hitched, trapping a sharp gasp in the back of my throat. I instinctively shrank down, sliding lower against the tall barstool and trying desperately to hide behind my half-empty cocktail glass. My heart hammered a frantic, heavy rhythm against my ribs, matching the relentless, thumping bass of the club music echoing through the VIP lounge.
Magnus Thorne.
He stood across the crowded room, deep in an intense conversation with Mercer. Even in a sea of young, arrogant billionaires and flashy socialites, my boss was a devastatingly handsome, terrifying force of nature. He did not just exist in a room; he commanded it. He radiated an overwhelming aura of pure power and rigid control that made everyone else look like mere children playing dress-up.
I knew exactly how Magnus operated. As the billionaire CEO of Thorne Industries, he abhorred distractions. He despised incompetence. Above all else, he loathed insubordination.
My stomach twisted into a painful, tight knot. He had assigned me an impossible mountain of data reports just before the weekend started. He expected me to be hunched over my glowing laptop screen in my cramped apartment right now, drowning in spreadsheets and market projections. If he saw me here, standing in a dim VIP section, wearing a tight black dress that clung to every curve of my body, holding alcohol instead of a pen, it would be over. I was certain he would fire me on the spot.
“Lexi, we need to go right now.” I kept my voice lowered to a frantic hiss, keeping my face shielded with my hand.
Lexi remained maddeningly calm. She swirled her colorful drink, a teasing smirk playing on her lips. She did not even attempt to lower her head or hide her presence.
“You are overreacting, Cora.” Lexi leaned her elbows against the marble bar top, her eyes dancing with amusement. “You are a grown woman. You are off the clock. There is zero reason to hide like a frightened child just because your boss decided to show up at a party.”
“You do not understand him.” I clutched the stem of my glass, my knuckles turning stark white under the neon lighting. “He hates lack of focus. He will look at me being here, drinking and partying, and he will think I am slacking off. He will think I am a distraction. I cannot afford to lose this job.”
Lexi rolled her eyes and bumped her shoulder against mine. “Stand your ground, Cora. Do not cower away from any man. Especially not tonight. You look far too stunning to hide in the shadows. That dress hugs you perfectly. If I were you, I would march right up to him and make him realize what he is missing outside of the boardroom.”
“Have you lost your mind?” I stared at her in sheer disbelief.
Before Lexi could offer another piece of terrible advice, the worst possible scenario unfolded. Over by the center tables, Magnus stopped speaking to Mercer. He turned his head. His sharp gaze began to slowly sweep across the sprawling room, calculating and precise, taking in the faces of the elite guests.
Then, his eyes stopped moving.
He spotted me.
Even from across the massive room, I felt the exact moment his gaze locked onto mine. The air in my lungs turned to ice. He went perfectly still for a fraction of a second. Then, he started walking.
He moved steadily and purposefully toward our table at the bar. The entire room seemed to physically tilt in his direction. The heavy, suffocating weight of his imposing presence forced the surrounding crowd of elite guests to step aside, parting like the sea to carve a clear path for him.
My nerves began fraying at a rapid pace. The impending confrontation loomed closer with every long, confident stride he took. I could not face him sober. I simply could not do it.
Desperate terror bypassed my rational brain. I dropped my cocktail glass onto the counter and blindly reached out. My fingers curled around two small, heavy shot glasses of tequila sitting abandoned on the edge of the bar mat. I lifted the first one and threw it back rapidly. I followed it immediately with the second shot, downing the fiery liquid in quick succession.
The heat hit the back of my throat with a sharp, aggressive burn. I coughed softly, letting the liquid courage slide down into my freezing chest. I prayed the alcohol would dull the raw panic screaming inside my veins.
Magnus finally stopped.
He stood directly before our table, a towering monument of custom-tailored perfection. His expensive dark suit jacket hugged his broad shoulders, and the crisp, pristine white dress shirt beneath it was immaculate. He loomed over me, casting a dark shadow that entirely swallowed my small space at the bar.
His icy blue eyes were blazing. I looked up and saw a volatile mixture of pure shock, raw anger, and an unmistakable dark possessiveness swimming in his gaze.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
His commanding, booming voice cut effortlessly through the thumping club music. The sheer force of his tone made the bass vibrating in the floorboards feel weak in comparison. He glared down at me, furious.
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. The tequila was only just beginning to rush through my system, sparking a fuzzy warmth in my brain, but it was not enough to find my voice yet.
“You are supposed to be at home, working on the task I assigned to you!” Magnus demanded, stepping even closer. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the cold anger rolling off him. “Not here. Drinking.”
I gripped the edge of the bar, trying to form a coherent defense. I needed to tell him I had already finished the work, but Lexi cheerfully intervened before I could string two words together.
“Hi there!” Lexi extended her hand with a bright, fearless smile, completely ignoring the thick tension suffocating the space around us. “I am Lexi Harper. Cora’s best friend. It is so great to officially meet you.”
Magnus looked down at her manicured hand. He accepted the handshake out of sheer reflex, his large hand enveloping hers for a brief second.
“Nice to meet you.”
His response was flat and devoid of any actual interest. The moment he released her hand, he completely dismissed Lexi’s presence. He did not spare her another glance. His furious, icy gaze snapped right back to me, pinning me in place.
“I am waiting for an explanation, Cora.” Magnus kept his voice dangerously low, a lethal edge sharpening every syllable. “I expect my employees to handle their responsibilities. Why are you out partying when you are already on thin ice?”
The unfairness of his accusation sparked something deep inside my chest. The four shots of tequila floating in my bloodstream ignited. A sudden, reckless streak of stubbornness, one I never even knew I possessed, washed over the lingering terror.
I actually chuckled.
The sound slipped past my lips before I could stop it. Magnuses’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits at the sound of my laughter.
I lifted my hand and pointed a single finger directly at his broad, solid chest.
“Mr. Thorne, I am off the clock.” My voice slurred just slightly, but I tilted my chin up in defiance, meeting his furious stare head-on. “I could ask the very same thing about you... boss. Why are you out partying?”
Lexi sucked in a sharp breath beside me.
Magnus stepped even closer. His towering frame completely boxed me in against the edge of the marble bar. His imposing presence was entirely suffocating, stealing the oxygen from the air around me. He looked down at my pointing finger, then back up to my flushed face.
“As long as you work for me, I own you and every second of your time.” His tone was dark and lethal, vibrating with a promise of consequences. “You would do well to remember that.”
I swallowed hard against the dry lump in my throat, but the alcohol fueled my rebellious fire. “This is my personal time. You do not control me when I leave that office.”
Magnus’s jaw clenched. The muscles in his neck tightened against his pristine white collar. He did not look away from me, but he addressed Lexi.
“As her friend, you should advise her to leave with me immediately. That is, if she values her job at all.”
Lexi smoothly and quickly backed out of the crossfire. She held up both hands in a gesture of surrender, her PR instincts kicking in to protect her own neck.
“That is very generous of you to offer a ride, Mr. Thorne.” Lexi grabbed her sleek clutch from the counter. “I absolutely have to stay here and network for my PR clients anyway. I trust you to take Cora home safely.”
I whipped my head around to stare at my best friend. “Like hell I am leaving with him.”
I jerked my arm away wildly as Magnus made an impending reach toward my elbow to guide me out. My sudden movement caused me to stumble slightly against the barstool, throwing my balance off.
Lexi leaned in close to my ear. “Cora, please do not make a massive scene in front of all these billionaires. Just go with him. You are going to get fired if you keep pushing him like this.”
I glared at Lexi, feeling the sting of betrayal. She had dragged me out here.
Magnus sighed heavily, a sound steeped in deep irritation. “Stop acting like a child, Cora. Your behavior is unacceptable. You have a massive pile of reports due tomorrow, and I know for a fact they remain unfinished. Your lack of dedication is astounding.”
The sheer arrogance of his assumption made my blood boil. The fury burned hotter than the tequila. He assumed I was a slacker. He assumed I ignored his demands to come wear a tight dress and drink. He had no idea that I had poured grueling, tireless hours into completing every single page of those reports before Lexi finally dragged me out of my apartment. I had sacrificed my sanity for his company, and he stood here insulting my work ethic.
Despite the immense pressure radiating from him, I stubbornly stood my ground. My feet planted firmly against the sticky club floor.
“Why do we not wait for Monday morning to find out about my dedication, Mr. Thorne?” I snapped back, my chest heaving with exertion.
Magnus did not care about my defiance. He looked at me with absolute, calm arrogance. He was a man who fully expected total, unquestioning obedience from every person in his orbit.
“You are coming with me.” He ordered flatly, leaving absolutely no room for debate.
The heavy tequila sparked a thousand reckless, terrible ideas in my fuzzed brain. He stood there, looking down at me like a disobedient pet that needed to be corralled. The sheer entitlement dripping from his perfect, tailored posture pushed me over the edge.
I rolled my eyes dramatically.
“Alright.” I shifted my weight and turned my body slightly toward the bar counter. I made a very deliberate show of pretending to reach for my small clutch bag resting near the napkins.
Magnus relaxed his stance by a fraction of an inch, clearly believing he had won the argument.
Instead of grabbing the leather bag, my fingers stretched further across the marble. I closed my hand tightly around a heavy, thick rocks glass holding a half-full serving of dark amber liquor. The glass felt heavy and solid in my grip.
I turned back around to face him.
My eyes landed on his perfect, broad chest. It was beautifully framed by that pristine, expensive white dress shirt. He looked untouchable.
I offered him a sickeningly sweet, daring smile. I locked my hazy eyes directly with his sharp blue ones.
“Well. If you insist.”
Before Magnus could even register the sudden movement of my arm or react to my words, I snapped my wrist forward. I deliberately tilted the heavy glass and splashed the dark amber drink directly onto the center of his broad chest.
The heavy liquid hit him with a solid splash.
I stood frozen, watching with wide, vindictive eyes as the sticky alcohol instantly ruined his custom-tailored white shirt. The dark stain rapidly blossomed, soaking straight through the expensive, crisp fabric. It clung to the firm muscles of his chest, dripping messily down his front and seeping into the sharp lapels of his designer suit jacket.
A heavy, dead silence dropped over our immediate section of the lounge, cutting through the background noise of the club.
Sharp, audible gasps immediately rippled through the surrounding crowd of elite guests. Every single person in the vicinity turned to witness a drunken assistant intentionally humiliate a billionaire CEO in the middle of a VIP party.
