My Boss Was Here!

Cora’s POV

Exhaustion sank deep into my bones the second the apartment door clicked shut behind me. I dropped my leather purse onto the hardwood floor and dragged my leaden legs toward my bedroom. I collapsed face-first onto my mattress, not even bothering to take off my shoes. The sheer mountain of paperwork Magnus had ruthlessly dumped on my desk now formed a chaotic sea of manila folders and printed spreadsheets across Lexi’s spare bedsheets. It had taken me hours of punishing, nonstop reading just to organize the alphabetical index, and I still had hundreds of dense, single-spaced pages left to carefully analyze. The bold black text on the financial summaries was already starting to blur together into meaningless shapes. The massive stack of papers felt like a physical weight pressing down on my lungs.

This crushing workload was my direct consequence for losing focus during that high-stakes boardroom meeting. I had allowed my mind to drift, and Magnus had caught me.

My mind kept reeling, refusing to grant me a single moment of peace. His low, commanding warning echoed loudly in my skull over and over. Just thinking about his deep voice delivering those open, unapologetic threats sent a cold shiver racing down my spine. I pressed my palms against my tired eyes, trying to block out the relentless anxiety and the memory of his intense, piercing gaze.

The unfiltered terror of losing my job fueled my desperate need to finish this impossible task. I needed this paycheck to survive the month. I had nowhere else to turn for financial help. My mother had recently kicked me out of the house, throwing my packed bags onto the front porch in the middle of the afternoon. She made it perfectly clear that she viewed my stubborn passion for creative writing as a lazy, useless excuse to avoid finding a real corporate career. She wanted me to be a picture-perfect business drone, climbing the corporate ladder and making her proud. She hated my hobbies and my dreams. If I failed this assigned analysis and Magnus actually fired me in the morning, I had absolutely no safety net left in the world.

I forced my heavy limbs to move. I pushed myself up to a sitting position, my joints aching in protest, and reached for a thick stack of regional market projections.

My bedroom door swung open without a single warning knock.

Lexi waltzed into the room, humming a loud, upbeat pop tune. She radiated bouncy, chaotic energy. She practically danced across the floorboards. Her vibrant, carefree vibe served as a stark, jarring contrast to the soul-crushing dread weighing heavily on my chest.

She stopped her humming the precise moment her bright blue eyes scanned the disaster zone of files covering my bed. Her gaze flicked from the relentless paperwork to my defeated, slumping posture.

"Whoa. Did a hurricane rip through your room, or did a runaway freight train crash in here?" Lexi stepped closer and carelessly tossed her designer handbag onto my spinning desk chair. "Let me guess the situation. Mr. Ocean Eyes is thoroughly pissed off again and decided to ruthlessly punish you with busywork."

"I brought it on myself." I groaned, letting my head fall back against the wooden headboard in defeat. "I got distracted during a highly important quarterly meeting."

"Distracted? Oh, I know exactly what distracted you." Lexi broke out into a bright grin filled with mischievous delight. She leaned casually against the wooden doorframe and crossed her arms over her chest, looking far too pleased with herself. "You were daydreaming about your ruthless CEO during the meeting again, weren't you?"

"I was not doing any such thing. Do not start with this nonsense." I glared at her defensively, feeling my heart rate spike.

Lexi clutched her hand over her heart in a display of mock guilt. She let out a dramatic, theatrical gasp that belonged on a stage. "Okay, I confess my sins. I took a tiny, innocent peek at your open laptop before you managed to close the lid earlier. I saw the document staring right at my face."

"You went through my private laptop? You know we have a strict rule about personal space." A deep, fiery flush spread up my neck and settled hotly into my cheeks. I felt my skin burning with intense shame.

"I didn't snoop on purpose! The screen was practically glowing right in my face." Lexi waved off my angry complaint with a careless flick of her wrist. "I promise I didn't read the whole thing. But the write-up was simply too juicy to pass over. I saw enough of that steamy chapter to know that you adore the man."

"Lexi, that is my private work!" I scrambled forward across the mattress and tried to gather my messy files to distract myself from the burning embarrassment. I shoved the folders together in a blind panic.

"You were practically drooling over him in the text, Cora." Lexi ignored my frantic panic, her teasing smirk growing significantly wider. "You wrote about how much you longed to be kissed by him. You wrote about desperately wanting him to press you down and dominate you in the shadows of the office. The specific details were incredibly vivid and revealing."

"I am not drooling over anyone! It is purely fiction. That is just a regular creative writing exercise to keep my skills sharp." I threw my empty hands up in the air, desperate to wave away the undeniable truth of my massive, consuming crush on my boss.

"Sure. Just a creative writing exercise. Keep telling yourself that fairy tale." Lexi laughed out loud, tossing her flowing blonde hair over her shoulder. Her eyes danced with knowing amusement.

"I mean it, Lexi. He is my demanding boss, and I am terrified of crossing him. I just need to finish these sprawling reports before morning." I stacked the financial analyses into a neat, squared pile, refusing to meet her gaze.

Lexi magically let the firm denial slide. Her playful expression suddenly shifted into serious determination as she pivoted to her real agenda for the evening. She pulled her expensive phone from her pocket and tapped the bright screen to wake it up.

"You need a genuine break from this corporate torture chamber. I have the perfect escape plan." Lexi wagged the glowing phone in my direction like a glowing prize. "We are going to an ultra-exclusive VIP birthday party for Mercer tonight. I managed to score access."

"The young billionaire heir? Lexi, you cannot be serious right now." I shook my head firmly, pushing my thick glasses up my nose. "I cannot go clubbing or partying tonight. I have mountains of demanding reports to finish for a ruthless boss who has already explicitly threatened to fire me. I am staying right here in this room."

"Cora, please listen to me." Lexi stepped right up to the edge of the bed and gave me her patented wide, pleading eyes. The look that never failed to break my resolve. "You cannot let me go to this event alone. I am desperate to land a major PR client tonight. This is a massive, career-defining opportunity for my portfolio. If I walk into that lavish mansion by myself, I will be surrounded by my backstabbing industry colleagues. They are awful, fake-smiling opportunists who would rather sabotage my pitches than see me succeed. I need an ally."

"I cannot risk my stable job for a random party." I sighed heavily, rubbing my pounding temples to fend off a forming headache.

"You owe me one." Lexi played her final, unbeatable strategic card. She dropped her phone directly onto my mattress and stared me down. "I pulled massive strings to get you this very assistant job at Thorne Corporation when you were broke, desperate, and living out of a tiny suitcase. Consider this me cashing in that ultimate, life-saving favor."

I sat perfectly frozen on the messy mattress. The heavy weight of her truthful words trapped me in a tight corner of unshakeable loyalty. I knew deep down she was right. Without Lexi taking a chance on me, I would have been homeless and hopelessly unemployed. Choosing friendship over my crushing corporate responsibilities felt like sheer career suicide, but she left me with zero valid options to refuse her plea.

"Fine. But returning home by midnight is non-negotiable." I relented with a long, drawn-out sigh of defeat, silently apologizing to my career prospects.

Fast forward a chaotic hour later, I stepped out of a private hired car and planted my strappy heels onto a sweeping, perfectly paved circular driveway.

I found myself standing in awe, staring at a massive, seamlessly polished mansion that looked exactly like a billionaire's lavish, indulgent playground. Imposing marble pillars framed the grand double entrance. The sprawling estate screamed obscene wealth from every single angle. High-profile, beautifully dressed influencers posed for pictures near a sparkling outdoor fountain, while famous fashion models and recognizable A-list celebrities drifted past the velvet ropes with drinks already in their hands.

Lexi looked stunning in the dim outdoor lighting. She wore a shimmering silver outfit that caught the ambient flashes with every confident strut she took toward the entrance.

I, on the other hand, felt out of place and horribly overexposed. Lexi had ruthlessly raided my modest wardrobe, rejecting every practical, comfortable piece of clothing I owned. Instead, she had forced me into one of her own designer dresses. I was currently suffocating in a sleek, curve-hugging black dress that clung incredibly tight to my waist and hips. The dark fabric left my shoulders entirely bare, and a plunging neckline showed off a scandalous amount of cleavage I usually kept strictly hidden beneath modest blouses. Paired with the bold, striking red lipstick she had painted on my mouth, I genuinely felt like a panicked imposter stepping into a glamorous, foreign land.

Despite the comprehensive glamour makeover, I had firmly refused to part with my thick glasses. I nervously pushed the frames up the bridge of my nose once again. I tugged anxiously at the dangerously short hem of the black dress, foolishly hoping to gain an extra inch of coverage as we walked past security and pushed through the towering front doors.

The heavy bass of the club-style music hit me instantly like a physical wall. The pounding, aggressive rhythm vibrated deep in my chest, blending seamlessly with the loud party chatter and the endless clinking of expensive crystal glasses.

Lexi did not waste a single second admiring the striking interior architecture. Determined to make her chronically stressed friend loosen up for the night, she grabbed my bare wrist and dragged me straight through the packed elite crowd toward a massive, fully illuminated bar located in the far corner.

"You need to breathe and stop acting like a terrified nervous wreck." Lexi signaled the busy bartender with two raised fingers. "You have literally zero life outside of Thorne Corporation. For tonight, we are going to pretend that you do. Try to act like you belong here."

"I do not want to pretend. I want to go home and finish cross-referencing my spreadsheets." I kept scanning the crowded, chaotic room, terrified I might accidentally bump into a wealthy client from the main office.

"Stop worrying about Mr. Ocean Eyes for one goddamn second. Drink this." Lexi slid a tiny glass of strong, pungent tequila across the sleek marble counter toward me.

I glanced down at the clear liquid, then back at the expectant face of my best friend. The suppressed, rebellious part of my brain finally caved once again. I grabbed the small shot glass and tossed the drink back in one aggressive, desperate gulp.

The burning liquid scorched a blazing, fiery trail straight down my throat. I coughed harshly, squeezing my eyes shut to fight the sharp sting in my sinuses. Before I could even catch my breath, Lexi rapidly shoved a second poured shot directly into my waiting hand. The lingering heat of the first shot urged me forward. I tipped my head back again and let the second round of raw tequila burn its way deep into my system.

A few short minutes later, the sharp, suffocating edges of my lingering baseline anxiety began to happily blur. The double dose of alcohol hit my susceptible bloodstream with surprising, rapid speed. My overwhelmed brain suddenly felt warm and comfortably fuzzy. The heavy, dark dread concerning my unfinished workplace reports slowly melted into the colorful background of the party. I stood a little taller by the bar, feeling significantly bolder as the heavy bass music thumped against my exposed skin.

Lexi leaned her weight against the marble bar counter. She nudged me sharply in the ribs with her sharp elbow.

Her bright blue eyes sparkled beneath the dim club lights as if she had just discovered a hidden chest of priceless treasure.

"Okay, do not look immediately. Just be very subtle." Lexi kept her voice low but she practically vibrated with unrestrained excitement. "Look towards the men standing near the exact center of the room. That is Mercer. The young billionaire heir."

"The guy throwing this massive, overly expensive party?" I questioned, tracing her focused line of sight while trying to act fiercely casual.

"Yes. The newly crowned youngest billionaire in the entire city." Lexi sighed happily, resting her chin in her open hand, looking thoroughly captivated. "Just look at that god-given jawline of his. He inherited an absolute corporate empire. He possesses raw power, immense wealth, and an ungodly beautiful face to match all that money."

My natural curiosity eventually won out over my lingering hesitation. I genuinely wanted to see the man capable of drawing out so many rich celebrities and famous socialites to a single private estate. Despite my better judgment pinging in my fuzzy brain, I turned my head fully to look in the direction of the powerful man Lexi was relentlessly fawning over.

And then, I froze completely in my tracks.

Every single trace of the pleasant warmth running through my veins from the tequila instantly vanished. The comfortable, fuzzy alcohol buzz shattered into a million sharp, freezing pieces of jagged ice. My mouth parted slightly in silent, absolute horror. The breath was violently knocked straight from my collapsing lungs, leaving me silently gasping for available air in the middle of the noisy, crowded room.

"Oh... shit." I breathed out loudly, my voice trembling with waves of pure, undeniable terror.

Lexi blinked rapidly. Her undivided attention snapped away from the handsome billionaire heir and darted frantically back to my suddenly pale, bloodless face.

"What? What is wrong with you?" Lexi demanded immediately, frowning in deep confusion.

I tore my frozen gaze away from the powerful figures standing in the center of the lavish room. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut. My panicked heart hammered a frantic, highly destructive rhythm against the cage of my ribs. I slowly opened my eyes again and looked back across the floor, desperately praying to any higher power that my alcohol-fuzzed brain was just playing random, cruel visibility tricks on me. I prayed with everything I had that I was simply hallucinating from the sheer stress of my massive corporate workload.

But it was not a hallucination.

There he was.

Standing amidst the untouchable elite crowd, effortlessly towering over the surrounding guests and casually exuding a suffocating, terrifying aura of dark power and sheer dominance.

Magnus Thorne, my terrifying, ruthless boss, was here at the exact same party.
